i notice that allot of people are having neck pain. what about rolling up a towel and putting it under your neck instead of putting your hands under it? this helped me and i hope it helps some of you.

What ever does not kill me will make me stronger.

I am going to try the various tips to protect your neck listed here. Thanks! I have arthritis in my neck and I have a lot of trouble with neck pain. I have to be very careful when I am working on abs.

After a month of doing these videos, I've found that I really am not having any issue with my neck anymore. Maybe I was just THAT out of shape?

The pilates videos are the hardest ones I think. I can't get through them - almost with we were doing crunches!

I use to have problems pulling on my head with ab work and found that a small towel rolled up that I hold tight across the back of my neck really helped. You have to pull the towel out to each side but still support your neck. I helps me keep from pulling my chin in to my chest and focus on my abs doing all the work.

I also focus on not pulling on my neck with my hands. Sometimes it is easier just to cross my hands over my chest or leave them at my sides on the floor.
As you continue to exercise your core becomes stronger and the muscles used are your abs.

I have had help with the orange under the chin trick, too. Also, focusing on a spot on the ceiling so that you are keeping from squeezing your head to your chest. I also keep from putting any pressure on my head with my hands. I just rest my head on them, but focus on not pulling on my head.

You can modify by keeping your head on the floor but keeping your abs engaged or put a pillow under your neck and shoulders for support but don't forget to engage your abs at all times.

I've done pilates for about 4 years off and on. Trust me, I started out with head on the floor then moved to pillow, and eventually being strong enough to not need support.

Also, make sure your you're keeping your head in a neutral position. Imagine that you're holding an orange under chin so that you're not looking down, that helped me A LOT!

Keep at it :-)

When I do abs I cannot put my hands behind my head - I just cross them across my chest. I find this helps me not to hurt my neck. Hope that helps you.

I have had the same trouble. This really hurts my neck a lot. I don't see how you can relax your neck and still be able to hold up your head. I end up modifying the beginning of the workout and then can do the planks no problem

Pilates is the only video I can't do YET. I have tried 2 times and I can get about 2 mins out of it. I will keep trying until I get through it though.

yes, if you're experiencing neck pain you need to recheck your form.
I sometimes use a trick to keep the neck neutral for myself b/c of previous injuries: I use an extra support by holding something like a manila folder or a thin, but large enough paperback book behind my shoulder/neck/head area. this keeps me from straining my neck muscles at all. just a Physical Therapy trick ;-) emoticon

I think that if your neck is hurting is because you are not working with your abs enough during the video. Next time really try to focus on your abs and try to relax de neck during the exercises. If it doesn't help maybe you should modify some of the movements. Good luck!

Mine is not so much pain as it is tension....I've always carried my stress in my neck and the muscles area knotted up already. When I tense those muscles in doing physical activity, it just exacerbates the tension. I've started doing a few beginner's yoga inversions and it helps a lot!

I have an old hip injury and sometimes must adapt certain of the workouts to prevent further problems.

If you have neck pain, watch your form. If that does not help, do some adaptation. The work out should not cause neck pain.

I have more trouble with my neck doing this video than I do my abs! I know she says to put your hands under your neck for added support, but, evidently, I have a melon-head....it still bothers my neck!

I found that abs workout to be a killer on my neck I did a little bit of it but it was killing me. I am glad to see that others had trouble.

I did the 2 mile powerwalking today.
