I have battled the up and down weight thing for most of my adult life and know it has been too much a focus in my life I can't imagine what it would be like to be the normal weight for myself and not think about it every day because clothes don't fit around the waist so it is hard to find clothes that do or am always trying to hide the belly. It may take me awhile to change my ways but joined Sparks hoping to make the change with help. Today is a great day here, sunshine after many windy rainy days so will get outside and work in my gardens again. Have a great Sunday everyone!

if there is one thing that SP has helped me get thoroughly through my head
it is that the quality of my life should not depend on a number or a vision of who I think I should be or a comparison between that and what I am

The quality of my life is about being able to do more that I did yesterday and enjoy the process

Thanks for that, very good way to approach health and fitness. It's too easy to loose sight of the big picture isn't it?

when weight is the only measure of your determination and happiness you have put too much stock in a number
exercise and good nutrition are good for the soul
they are good for your body
and they will help you live healthier

I get weighed two or three times a year
my physical and my trainers weigh ins

I don't need to know more
I grade myself on what things I have done for health today
did I exercise
did I do cardio for heart
did I eat right for my body today

I definitely agree that measuring is the BEST way to keep up with weight loss! It lets me see where my body loses first and therefore where it probably gains first! For instance I've lost about 8 lbs but only at best an inch in my waist; however, I've lost 2 inches in my thighs and an inch in my arms! This makes it more encouraging for me! Also, I will say that being in medical school and dissecting our cadavers that most of the fat on the bodies was in the back of the thighs and butt. It's unreal all the places your body stores fat!! It's so exciting to see people really motivated about being healthy!! Keep on it everyone!

I'm glad I found this topic. I'm up almost 5 lbs since starting 4 weeks ago and was feeling frustrated. However! I lost inches already.

Just buy an inexpensive tape measure at a dollar store. It works great. I can see the the change in my arms and hips.

Lisha~ If you don't have a typical soft tape measure you can print one off of SP. Go to your 'My Tools' tab then click on 'Start'. On the left hand side under 'My Nutrition' and 'My Fitness' you will see a place that says 'Weight and Measurement'. Click on there and you will find a PFD file that you can print up a tape measure.

Measuring yourself is the BEST way to gauge your transformation! Just this past weekend my daughter handed me the tape measure and asked me to show her where I measured before. Wrapping it around me to my starting measurement (38" waist) I was stunned to see what the extra 7" looked like!!

Good luck and enjoy watching the inches drop!

I to am obsessed with weighing myself every freaking day. Sometimes I go two days, to wait a whole week kills me. I have not ever measured myself. Do I just use a regular tape measure?

I am with you on the weight gain. I gained 1.6 lbs last week because this past weekend I didn't do much for workouts due to being out of town and my friend made her appearance also. Hang in there and soon it will be gone again.

Week before last, I had 1.5 lb gain. It was TOM & I had been doing really good eating & working out. The following I lost that plus some. Keep at it & that small gain will be gone!

I realized I was so obsessed with weighing that I finally threw my scale completely out! Yes, in the trash! Now, I just weigh at the gym...same scale every time...same days of the week every time. A byproduct is an added motivation to go to the gym; if I want to see my weight, I've got to go to the gym.

Now, I'm more focused on balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, which is much more productive. Those are the things that affect weight, anyway!

I concur!!

Addiction to the scale should be listed as a disease!! I do weigh myself everyday ... sometimes more than once ... ok, who am I kidding ... always more than once but I have come to only acknowledge the weight I see 1st thing in the AM &&& I only record my weight and measurements on Saturday mornings (even before my coffee : o SHOCK). I, too, get frustrated at TOM when my weight increases by 2-6lbs! Funny enough though, my scale ALWAYS WITHOUT FAIL tells me what I want to see on Saturday mornings. What also hasn't failed me is MEASURMENTS. Measure and record in your profile EVERY week. You can even go back and look at how far you have come!! While the water may stick around for the week of TOM, it will go away again!! I promise! As long as you are eating right and getting in that excercise ... reduce your calories by 500 cals/day through calorie intake and/or exercise to lose 1 lb per week ... then you will see the inches and weight fall! It happens to me every single month!

Remember, while you are losing fat, you are also gaining muscle ... fat gone = now replaced by muscle. A pound is a pound is a pound ... once you really get going on the exercise it may appear that the "weight" is not coming off ... it might not be, however, the FAT is coming off!!

I only believe the scale on Saturday mornings ... and then I take it from there!

Keep up the good work and be consistant!

Between the 2 things, I wouldn't get too worried. Just get back on the wagon and next week you'll see a loss.

Yes, I'm doing the bootcamp videos daily and like them as they are short and sweet and found some I'd definitely go back and do a second time for the extended workout. I just go to my home page and go to that team and click on the link for that specific day. I'm on track and plan to continue and figure I can do anything for up to 10 minutes without too much grief. LOL

I've had to hide my scale for the very same reason. I can eat healthy and exercise and still be up 2 to 5 pounds, so just try to remember to eat healthy and weigh at the same time once a week. I do it first thing in the morning before I get dressed and before I eat or drink anything.

couple of pounds here and there doesn't matter..you said it; it's that time of the year. What matters is that you remain focused on your long term goal of loosing 50 pounds..I am sure you can make it...you did make it when you lost 5 pounds in 2 weeks..we all go thro' bad weekends, the one who learns from it and get backs on the healthy living style achieves his/her goal.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! My little friend decided to make her presence known a week early yesterday and I'm there with you with the water retention and wanting to eat EVERYTHING that isn't nailed down. This too shall pass. Just as mentioned, your weight fluctuates many times during the course of a day so don't let the number bum you out. Just continue on your journey, get back on track and NEVER give up!

Keep in mind that your body can fluctuate anywhere from 2 to 6 pounds . . . just from water retention, and many other things. You just said you didn't eat that great, and that its your time of the month. Those two combined can cause you to retain water! Just keep at it . . . and don't get on the scale for at LEAST another week!

you might be surprised when you weigh in again. :) (in a good way!)

Just make sure you're eating the very best you can, and get out there and get active!

Hello all! I am pretty new here and I lost 5 lbs in the first two weeks. Last weekend we went out of town and I wasn't very good and I am having that time of the month and today I weighed and I gained two pounds. I am super bummed! I just need some motivation to get going again!
