I've gained, too, but I've lost inches and I feel better. It's hard, but try to keep those goals in mind so you stay motivated. Have you made any adjustments in your diet? Reducing refined sugars might help.

I'm with IBelieve08. I have cut soda out of my diet, no wine, few nuts (I used to eat daily), and I am exercising, doing the videos, etc. I am gaining weight. I know everyone tells me it is muscle mass but I want to see concrete proof that it is working. I plan to retake my measurements soon and hopefully that will make me feel better.

I know what you mean! It's so hard to stay off of the scale - I feel like sometimes I just need immediate results but I am trying to fight the urge and just keep battling forward! emoticon

If I don't look look at the scale as my measuring rod, but rather focus on the individual acts of heathy behavior and thought, I get the lift that I am looking for.
And If I don't --I get on SP quickly for a lesson.
It IS about the process not the numbers.

Honestly I know there is more to it than the scale ~ and I am used of it fluctuating... but usually it settles in a pound or two lighter, then another bumpy patch... but when it all settles down, it is another pound or two...
But I am really trying to look at other indicators! Since the beginning of 2009 I have lost a total of 4 1/2" ~ I'll take it ~ and I am not quitting!!!

Others who are having a tough go... HANG IN THERE WITH ME OK!!!

That scale can control us like sometimes when we lose then we think it's ok to eat something and emoticon we have put on a few lbs. Oh this is so happening that I don't weigh myself as much as I use to just once a week if that. emoticon

I hear all of you! I was frustrated with no weight loss during the first three weeks that I'd been on sparkpeople. Then I lost nearly 3 pounds. It's now the 5th week and I've gained 6 pounds total from before I started. In the past this would have frustrated me into stopping. I always felt that dieting and exercising made me gain weight. But with Sparkpeople I understand that this can sometimes happen. I've lost about 3 1/2 inches from my waist. So I know that something is working.

Yeah, I'm still gaining too. I lost last week (a whopping 1.2 lbs or something) but have gained it all back this week. I'm just SO frustrated.

oh my I certainly was not eating enough!!! I had my calories burned at a very conservative number... then even when I started with the challenge, I kniew I had increased, I was estimating how fast I walked/ran/cycled... again I think being conservative...Today I wore my heart monitor and for a 70 minute walk with some running in there, it says I burned 1076 calories... I would have only been putting that at abour 550... so when I recalculated my weekly numbers I am eating about 400 to 500 fewer calories daily on the minimun end than I should be! No wonder! I am enjoying the extra cardio expecially with the nice weather, but I have got to eat accordingly!!!

I am SO right there with you. I weighed myself 2 days ago and I was up a total of 2.5 lbs since starting the challenge, and I'm also eating great and doing the exercises every day.

Today is my "official" weigh in day and it looks like I've dropped those 2.5 lbs back off! *phew* - but I still haven't lost. I'm hoping this is the week my body starts responding :)

Thanks all! I especially appreciate that many of us are experiencing the same things, and I want to keep on keeping on, cuz I want us all to succeed!!! I was also reminded that this is not a race... it is LIFESTYLE. I did reset my fitness goals, it did go up, and I probably should be eating more... groan. ~ That should not be a problem, but I am not a big eater... and when you are eating healthy and watching portions, I feel like I am eating all the time! I must say it is kinda neat to "have to eat" something in the evening to get up to the calorie range rather than feeling deprived!
The sun is shining so no time like the present to meet my cardio goals for the week!!

I've stopped worrying about the number on the scale 'cause it can depress and discourage me,,,,

I have lost 2 dress sizes since the beginning of February and that is what I'm focusing on... one more dress size and then I'm done losing no matter what the scale says I weigh.

I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way.

One of the first things I did when I started trying to get back into shape after my surgery was to buy a scale with body fat measurements. I know they are not real accurate, so I don't look to it to necessarily tell me exactly what my BF% is. ut what they are good for is to see the trend. Even if the scale is not moving, but your body fat % is that tells you that you are moving in the right direction. Also track your measurements.

And everyone on here is right about maybe not eating enough. I actually found I finally broke my slump last week - my first week of a few in a row traveling for work. I was staying in my current calorie range but was not able to workout as much. Instead of my more normal 2500+ calories burned in a week (400+ minutes) I burned just around 2000 calories as I could not do the high intensity workouts I normally do at home. Yet it was my best loss yet. So I reset my cardio goals and recalculated my nutrition requirements and my intake requirements went up significantly. I still don't eat anywhere near the range it is now giving me as I just am not a big eater and can't eat that much. But I also don't worry about going a little over what my old range was. we shall see if the same holds true after traveling this week.

I also don't count any of the regular activities I do around my house like all the painting I have been doing lately.

I agree with so many of the other posts in that that stubborn scale does not budge much for me. I believe there are more tangibles going on, so I do not get too concerned. I do a good deal of strength training and I know that I am building muscle. I have been ignoring the scale. At this point there is a definite change in my body. There is more definition. I look much smaller. My measurements are changing but going by the way my clothes fit is always the best way to tell.

QVC had a today’s special value in honor of the Biggest Loser Finale. It is the Biggest Loser Body Fat Digital Scale w/Daily Caloric Reference. I watched the presentation when I got home from work. It looked kind of neat. This is what is displayed at their site: “displays your body fat, body water, muscle mass, and bone mineral mass as well as your weight to give you an all-around picture of your fitness”. I am going to give this a try and if I do not like it, I have 30 days to return it and get my money back.

I agree with so many of the previous posts. We are doing extra strength training and it is going to be building some muscles. I try to go less by the scale and more by how my clothes fit and my measurements. I am discouraged at no change in my measurements after last week. I did a crazy cardio day today so I am hoping that this week I will find some differences.

I seem to vary some days 3 lbs, but I think thats normal depending how much water you drink and your sodium intake.
If your watching what you eat and making smarter choices plus exercising you will lose.
Dont give up you can do it.

It is discouraging... but keep doing the right things... eating and exercisting and you will see results. I have gained and plateaued on a number of occassions that were completely undeserved. Eventually I have a "whoosh" and will lose several pounds unexpectedly. Just stay the course and remember it isn't a race. It is a way of life LONG TERM. Best to you,

I too am a little discouraged, but instead of just giving up...the old me attitude...I am going to try something new tonight. TurboKick at the gym. I hear it can burn up to 800 calories an hour. I am hoping that means lbs melting off soon. I just got a surprise and a whole bunch of my family will be here in 10 days. I still want to see the scale go down as well as my jean size. emoticon

THANK YOU!! I have been having this same problem. It is very frustrating. Yesterday I was so discouraged I barely worked out. I treded water for a few minutes with the kids in the pool. Know I am even more frustrated. I really hope to see the scale move soon. Thank you for all everyone said, it is giving me more strength to keep trying! I love spark!!!

Remember that eating too LITTLE will only slow down your metabolism and you won't lose weight! You have to eat enough to satisfy your BMR or your body thinks you are starving and will efficiently convert to starvation mode.....slowing down the metabolism and conserving calories. Avoid that trap!

Thank you sarah ww.....one pound of muscle is not going to weigh more than one pound of fat.....it will however "take up less space" if that makes sense...There's a lot of good info in these response...you may experience a great loss next weigh-in...if this is new to your body it may be wondering "what the heck" and holding on just to be sure it's going to be a consistent change.....If you are eating too few calories your body will go into a starvation mode and slow down your metabolism.....hang in there....you will be happy you did.....and measure, measure, measure......

It is a difficult hurdle to get over isn't it?!?

You know what I've found that is actually a pretty amazing indicator-now don't laugh! lol! The mirror! I don't have full length mirrors in my house for a couple of reasons. But, when you go shopping you have those darn things there! I used to hate to go shopping 'cause they always made me look fat-well maybe 'cause I was... emoticon But now, when I go...I still keep thinking, huh?!? I don't look that bad anymore! lol!

I expected to drop faster on this challenge but that is nit the case, but I am seeing results in my clothes. I agree that the scale should not be the number measure, but in my mind the scale is paramount to me.

I gained half a pound so I hear you - and it looks like I won't lose anything this week. But I like the idea of exercising every day.

I know it's hard to keep the motivation, I hope you have a good support group. I've got a couple friends on Spark, so I don't want them to see I'm wussing out - it's an excellent motivator.

Trust me. I'm where you are at. I lost about 40 pounds last year. Since January I've lost about 5. Ugh! The scale is not our friend! lol!BUT since I started the boot camp it appears the scales are working in my favor-but I'm not holding my breath! So, don't get discouraged. As long as you are doing the right things, eventually, the scale will work in your favor. And if not, guess what? You're in better shape than you have ever been!

Good luck!

Don't be discouraged. If you're exercising a lot more than you're used to it might take a bit for the scale to start going down again. Are you new to strength training? Often when you start up a new strength training program, the scale may go up a few pounds. It's not real weight gain and it will go away within a week or so.

Muscle does not weigh more than fat. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat, but muscle retains water which could be causing the fluctuation of the scale. When you start strength training your muscles will often retain water at first. This will go away once your body adjusts to the new program.

Another thing to consider is how much you're eating. You might now be eating enough if you're increased the amount you're exercising significantly. Not eating enough can be just as detrimental to your weight loss efforts as eating too much. If you haven't already, I would update your calories burned goal on your start page to reflect the amount of calories you actually burned last week. This might bump up your calorie range. If you're not eating enough to support the exercise you're doing your body can actually start to hold onto fat and refuse to lose weight.

Muscle does not weigh more then fat. A pound of muscle just takes up less room than a pound of fat. A pound always weighs a pound. So go according to other measurements as well as the scale. You may find the numbers on a tape measure are your best friend and not so much the numbers on the scale.

Thank goodness I am not the only one. I started SP April 22 at 179. Worked out almost daily, kept to the diet and was losing. As the scale would periodically drop, the rise I knew it was muscle and water retention, but it still is depressing to see the scale back up to 178, lowest was 173. I did measure on April 29, though. I have lost 7 inches off my waist, 5 off my hips and 3 on my thighs, so I know it is working, but I would like the scale at least to be going in the right direction. I have a meeting with a personal trainer Monday. I am hoping she can give me some pointers on getting the scale to move in the right direction.

Also, I am 4 days late for TOM. I know this is common while dieting and exercising, but I felt like I have/had all the PMS symptoms. Should I just expect it to come eventually? or just plan on it skipping this month?

I gained 5 pounds, but this morning when I weighed myself I lost 2 1/2 pounds. So the muscle I am gaining must be starting to metabolise a bit now plus I found out I was not eating enough calories, when I adjusted my workout time for the increase in activity, my calories went higher and when I started to eat the higher calories to compensate for all the extra activity after 2 days I saw a decrease in my weight today :-). One thing I have learned through this is that if you don't give your body enough fuel, it will not burn up the excess no matter how hard you work out. Don't give up - it will come off!!

Don't be hard on yourself. There are many reasons you may gain. Water retention, not eating enough for the amount you are working out, building muscle, your body getting used to the type of work outs your doing. Change is good to kick start your weight loss again, but make sure you are logging all the exercises you are doing, because if you are not eating enough for your work outs you will not loss either.

A scale should never be the only place to measure success. A tape measure, the way your clothes are fitting, and the way you feel... THOSE should also help measure your success.

Don't let the numbers on the scale jar you!

My husband and I decided at the beginning of the year to work out everyday. 7 days a week we do cardio and 3 days a week we went back to the gym in the afternoons to lift weights. He dropped the few pounds he needed to lose and started bulking up. I gained 6 lbs BUT my clothes do fit better and that's all I'm worried about.

Keep working towards the swimsuit challenge. You'll see a difference eventually. Are you eating unhealthy foods and staying within your caloric range or are you eating healthy? I was eating unhealthy and when I made that change....I started to drop lbs. Just a suggestion.

Trish, that's exactly what I was going to say! Right on! Building muscle is good - replaces all the stuff you want to lose.

Seriously... it's hard to stay motivated! I did the challenges 7 days straight, including optional ones... 230 minutes cardio for the week, kept my calorie intake to between 1250 and 1375 and I gained weight! Last year I lost 33lbs. Since Christmas I had only lost 3 lbs, so I thought the challenge would be a good way to ramp it up and get back on track, but I have gained the 3 lbs plus! I even started this challenge TOM ~ so I thought a slight loss was inevitable... ugggh well,it is a beautiful day and I am going out for a walk/run!!!!
