I can't find my pedometer but I wouldn't be surprised to see that I log quite a few miles throughout the day. I'm a nanny for a family with three small children so there's plenty of running back and forth to try to keep them from all getting in trouble at the same time.

I don't walk at ALL at my job since it's tech support, but I walk to and from work--it's about a 20 minute walk to and from, and that's with me being a really fast walker.

I am on my feet for almost 8 hours. I work in a busy Radiology Dept. and there is no such thing as light duty there. I use to wear a pedometer and I would average between 10000-13000 steps just at work for the day. I would be interested to know how many steps equals a minute worth of exercise. Has this ever been calculated?

May God richly bless you & yours!

At my job I do not walk a lot, but I make it a point every day to walk at least 1-1/2 - 2 miles at lunch. I live in Seattle so it's really hilly here, so I generally get a pretty good cardio work out in...

I'm not sure exactly how much, but I park as far away from the building as possible and I work upstairs (always take the stairs :) ) and all the way in the back of a large building...my job doesn't require much walking, but from where i park to my desk is a little under a mile :)

Hey HONEY032086, I am a flight attendant, so I walk alot. Some days I get 3,000 to 12,000 steps in. I only work about 15 days out of the month though. I would only get about an average of 5,000 steps but then on layovers I walk the airport or hit the treadmill or do aerobics at the hotel. When I first started I lost alot of weight but now I am having a hard time loosing weight. Some people on spark here tell me your body gets accustomed to the walking - wish I could figure it out, cuase I need to loose more weight.

I work at a bookstore, so I tend to either stand around behind the register or walk around the store tidying/showing people things for about 25 hours a week. We don't get to sit down at all, actually, which is really hard on my legs and feet.

As some others have mentioned, no matter what your job, you can always think up ways to add more steps/walking while at work. I wear a pedometer at work, and if I don't consciously think about changing my routines to add more steps, I only average about 6,000 per day. But I've been able to get it closer to the 10,000 mark by being more active: parking farther away; standing rather than sitting when performing certain tasks; walking to the office, rather than using the phone; and walking during breaks and lunch. At then end of the work day, if I haven't reached the 10,000 mark, I'll take a walk before I get home for however long it takes to reach the 10,000 step mark. I'm not allowed to go home until I reach my 10,000 steps per day goal!

I work at a distribution center as a packer, and they say we walk 7-8 miles in one night, in a 10hr period. 4 times a week. We only get 40min total for breaks in that 10hr time, so it's quite hard on the legs, let me tell you! But it allows me to eat more, so I'm happy :)

I work at a quick service restaurant and have worn a pedometer a couple days to see just how many steps I take in an average day and it is well over 10,000 since I stand all day.

I'm a Certified Nursing Assistant so my job is pretty active. The one day I wore my pedometer to work (I never will again cuz it doesn't have a safety clip & it fell off my scrubs waistband every time I bent over) I logged a little over 4,000 steps. I believe that's around 2 miles. On a very chaotic day I bet I get 3 miles. I will never again take a desk job. I looked & felt horrible when I did that.

I work at Walgreen's, I am one of the camera techs in my store. As camera techs we also stock shelves and help customers. the other day I put on my pedometer when I got to work. I walked over 9,000 steps. Of coarse that was warehouse day extra walking. with a lot of strength training mixed in. I try to walk briskly from place to place to make it real exercise. I love this much better than my old desk job. emoticon

LIke most, I too, am a desk jockey (not by choice!). However, I recently introduced a friend to SP. So, throughout the day (every half hour or so) we will walk a note to each other. Fortunately she is upstairs and so this makes for a nice little exercise break. There are 2 different stairways to the second floor; one way has 21 stairs and the other has 28. Also I sometimes use the restroom upstairs rather than the one right next to my office. I will use ANY excuse to get up and walk otherwise my butt feels 5 feet wide by the end of the day.

I haven't dusted off my old pedometer yet, but have been curios to see how much I walk at my job. I have a desk job but I'm always getting up and walking around to other people to give paperwork or pick up paperwork. I feel like I walk at least a mile every day.

Practically none... my only walking at work usually involves the trip across the building to the restroom.

Our manager's office used to be upstairs on the opposite side of the building: we all complained about the workout then lol... but she's now in the same section we are. The owner's office is still up there but he never uses it. He told us about a month ago that we can still climb up to his office even if he's not there, and it's funny because I'd been thinking of doing that very thing. So far it's only been "thinking of doing"... though I thought it would be a good plan, every trip to the restroom I go up the stairs to his office and back down... then up and down again on my way back. That will get a number of flights of stairs daily, and a great leg workout as these stairs are steeper than most.

I work as a server too, so I get lots of walking in during a shift. I only wore my pedometer once to work since it gets in the way of my apron, but that day, during a 2 1/2 hr shift I got in about 3 miles. That was a steady, not busy day. But then there's days that I work doubles or all day. Really depends on how busy we are too. I'd hate to think about what my weight would be right now if it weren't for me having such an active job. emoticon

I am a preschool teacher and we change classrooms (each room has a different theme) throughout the day, plus I pace a lot so before I leave (usually around 2:30) I've usually got between 6,000 and 8,000 steps (it depends a little on classrooms I was in. For example, music days result in a higher step yield where as days in the library tend to be a little lower). By the time I've run errands, chased my two year old around, and gone for a walk I'm at at last 12,000 steps.

I log in about 2 to 2.5 miles of steps at work. When I walk down to work and home it adds another 2 miles. I don't count these toward my cardio minutes because it might be inaccurate due to heavy lifting, swaying back and forth and such. I'm a produce clerk, a very busy one!

If you can-save up for one! I got mine for Amazon on sale. Normally it was $30 but it was $20 when I bought it. It would be worth looking into! I have am omron. The one without the software- it was cheaper! But you can keep track of your steps for up to 7 days. It works great!

I'm a paraeducator too, but I don't have a pedometer...I do do a lot of walking, up and down halls. I'll have to do research and see how many steps it is from one end to the other on each of the halls, then keep track of how many times I walk them in a day!

If I'm working-it depends on the job. I'm a paraeducator substitute as well as an early childhood substitute. This week I'm on a job that requires a lot of walking-up and down stairs, etc. The more the better! By the end of the day yesterday I logged almost 5,000 steps in. Today, I'm about 1/2 that, but the day isn't over...(work day is, but regular day isn't!)

I am a preschool teacher and only work 2.5 hours per day and I usually at that time get about 3,000 or so steps so quite a bit of walking for the time. Most days I have at least the 10,000 in for the day or alot of the time more than that.

I get between 5000-7000 at work. I wear a pedometer and I just restarted tracking my steps. I have worn them before but this one uploads on-line and when you accidently reset it it is still in the memory. I am on my feet most of the day, and do quite a few steps when picking up samples.

I am also doing a walking challenge for work. It has helped me get motivated to up my steps per day. I am around 12,000 shooting for 15,000.

I have the (eh hem) luxury (HA!) of working right on the Riverwalk in Downtown San Antonio, Texas. It is virtaully steps outside the back entrance of our building. It is such an amazing place, almost magical place to walk. There is such an array of foliage and wildlife...OK...I'm sounding like an ad for the Downtown Alliance now! :)
Although it gets pretty hot in San Antonio, the riverwalk is about 5 degrees cooler being below street level. It is one of the perks of working where I work and a few of us here at the office take it for exactly what it's worth and walk on it most every day. Somedays it is a nice leizurely stroll and other days, it's a full power walk. It depends on how hot is actually is.

My home is my place of business and, like most of you, I spend a good deal of time at a desk or the phone but I've learned to make a special effort when I go to meetings or work-related activities to park further away than usual, to climb the stairs rather than take the elevator... but the hours of 9-6 are still limiting for making steps.

Not much. I've been curious about that too though. I thought I might wear a pedometer someday too.

None! I do get exercise, though. I teach music lessons so I am playing an instrument, usually guitar or fiddle, straight through.

I work as a nurses aide at a rehab hospital so it's easy to get in a lot of walking. Due to an injury I'm on light duty so there isn't as much walking as I'd like lately. I have to make up for it when I'm at home or off. That's easy to do though - I like to walk & keep busy!

My job is mostly a desk job. Facility oversight is part of my job so I never know what surprises the day holds.

I only recently got a pedometer and I love it. I make a bigger effort to get my 10,000 steps a day in.

i work as a server in an outback. i really should put on a pedometer and count the steps i take, but any time i've worn one, they always got in the way sticking on my hip. if i can find a better fitting one, i may give it a go. but, needless to say, i get in quite a workout being on the go for at least 4 hours straight in a typical 5 or 6 hour shift...and i do lots of lifting (heavy trays, water pitchers, those kinds of things).

Im a receptionist. The 1st half of the day I answer the phones for all 3 of the companies that the owners own. So I am chained to the desk ( I have to let someone know if I have to use the restroom). The 2nd half of the day Im in the building with the company that I work for (not answering the phones) so I get more walking in then. But I go for a 1/2- 1 mile walk on my lunch. I usually even with the walk dont get up to 6000 steps on a really busy day.

I work in an electric power plant that is spread out and requires lots of walking most days. I wear a pedometer and try for at least 3 miles (I walk a 2000 step mile), but I usually get 4 or better.

I stay at home and home school my children. I realize that if I am not proactive, I won't get much walking in throughout my day. I took a pedometer and figured that 60 minutes of walking adds approximately 7,000 steps to my day. I set a timer in the morning and make sure that I walk that much. Sometimes I go for a long walk, but often it is just 5 or 6 short walks throughout the day!

QUAGGOTH13, I'm a pharmacy technician so I stand for 8 hours straight, no breaks right now because we're extremely shorthanded and right now with the swine flu we can't afford to not have enough staff for 30 mins, it can get really busy.

Sad thing is, yesterday was a slow day. I'm wearing it again today to see if we pick up at all and how much of a difference it makes compared to yesterday.

I'm a nurse-labor and delivery, so depending on the patient load, I may walk 15-20,000 steps (I'm right at a 2000step mile). We have a walking challenge at work, so I wear a pedometer. Plus, we have a good hike from the employee parking lot (7 minutes rapid pace).

Hmmm. This would be interesting to find out. I've never measured my steps. Perhaps I'll do that as a personal challange. Gotta dig up that pedometer...

I used to work a job where I was on my feet 80% of the time. I didn't watch much what I ate then and usually stayed around the same weight. When I left that job and came to my current, often times desk work job, I gained 10 pounds in 1 month! Yikes! When I was tracking, I was typically only getting 1000-1500 steps in during work. And I always take the stairs and often times go and talk to people in person as opposed to email or phone as I thinks it's a good excuse to get some walking in. Also, we have people who go around and collect our outgoing mail or shipping stuff, but I always take it out in person. Another excuse to walk. I do try to do things in other areas of my life, like park at the far end of the parking lot, walk to the stores near my house instead of drive, "jog" up and down stairs instead of taking them slowly, play on the floor with my infant son by crawling around or using him for weights and do lifts. Anything to get a little more exercise in.

DESK JOB HERE, NOT MUCH WALKING INVOLVED. I DO PARK FARTHER AWAY TO GO TO AND FROM THE CAR. I TRY TO WALK THE LONG WAY AROUND TO THE COPIER ECT. LAST TIME I WORE MY COUNTER I ONLY GOT LIKE 1000 - 1500 STEPS IN AT WORK. I DO FIDGET A LOT, BOUNCE LEGS ETC. I WALK 3 MILES ON MY LUNCH HR NOW TOO. MY HUBBY WAS MAKING FUN OF ME THE OTHER DAY FOR "WALKING" WHILE DRIVING. LOL. WHEN I THINK ABOUT, NOT OFTEN THOUGH, WHILE CAR IS ON CRUISE CONTROL I MOVE MY LEGS UP AND DOWN LIKE I AM WALKING IN PLACE. HE GOT A KICK OUT OF IT, WHILE IN THE STORE I WAS ALSO DOING OTHER THINGS, EVERY LITTLE MOVE MEANS MORE CALORIES BURNED BY THE END OF THE DAY. emoticon

I'm not sure how much the total walking is, but I have a desk job. So I take the stairs always and when I need to mail something I take the one envelope and walk it to the front. I used to make a stack of them to do at once, but I figured taking one at a time would add extra walking in my day.

Ok I got curious yesterday to see how many steps I do at my job alone. This does not include exercise or any other steps outside of work.

I did 4,312 steps which for me equals 1.62 miles. 1.62 miles within 8 hours of work, that's a lot of walking for a job lol!

For those of you who stand or walk for your job how many miles or steps do you do?
