Have you seen this?

A family of 4 in NH is trying to spend just $1,500 for groceries for a year! ... groceries, household items and personal care expenses. That's just $125 a year.

That's incredible! What do you think?

sorry i meant to say 1/2 DAY classes 5 days a week and the classes would be about 1 hour away from my job. i am currently a office assistant (reciptionist). which is at least an 8-5. and the classes are 12-5... so i would have to leave work at 11. i would perfer since i have A.D.D. to see if i could get a student loan that would cover the mortgage for the amount of time i would be in school and quit my job (oh how i love the sound of that) and concentrate on studying.

the school does help with job placement... so im going to be calling them and asking which ones that i am interested in have the highest rate of job placement.

I don't understand what you mean when you say, "they would be 1/2 classes. which would mean that i couldnt keep my current position"

...but I think I do understand that it would be good for you to do it, but you don't think you can afford it right now.

So maybe you will have to save and wait a year
... or maybe you can get a loan?

If it's only 3-4 months it seems like you probably should be able to manage to do it sometime in the fairly near future. You need a plan. Have you talked to people at the school? They may be able to point you in the right direction. They must know about the best places for financial aid.

I can definitely relate. I made the decision two years ago to go back to school and get my masters. I am in my last semester and can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately it was not as reasonable as 3-5k total. I was able to keep my full time job for most of my program and just this last semester had to resign to finish my full time internship. It has definitely been hard and put a huge strain on the budget, and probably our relationship, but we both agree that it is the better choice in the long run. Like you, I will have to opportunity to make at least $20k more a year. I am not sure when the break even point is going to be with all of these school loans, but I know it was the right choice for the long run. Not sure if this helped, but I can honestly say I do not regret my decision to go back to school, despite the cost, stress, and overwhelming amount of work:)

i wanted to get some opinions on a situtation i have... my hubby and i currently have an extremely tight budget. we both have to work full time just to make ends meat. i would like to eventually become a rn but would have to go back to school for that. i recently found a career college that has courses that could get me certified in different aspects of the medical field in about 3-4 months and for anywhere from 3-5k total. they would be 1/2 classes. which would mean that i couldnt keep my current position. but this would greatly help us in the long run. i would make about 10k to 25k more a year minus a commute. this is very frustrating having a solution to our finances within reach and not be able to grasp it. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I didn't used to like lentils either. I don't think I even liked the way they looked.

However I had them in some soup and casseroles I liked.

I think red lentil soup was a good one at the beginning. The lentils are blended. The taste was great.

No shoveling for me today, but I think I will have to shovel tomorrow! We are supposed to be getting a lot of snow.

Beans are good. We are eating more beans too. Beans, lentils, and other legumes. Soup, chili, hummus, and casseroles.

Welcome, LuvyA!

As for getting into a fruit and veggie coop, it depends on what they have in your area. We don't have Angel Ministries where I live but we do have the fruit and veggie thing.

Actually Angel Ministries has it too!

Look at January special #5!

It's a fruit and veggie box! www.angelfoodministries.com/menu_090

With Angel food, it had 4 rib eye steaks, muffin mix, eggs and milk. Things like that--all for $30.00. There was no income restriction either. Most programs seem to have an income limit and this doesn't. We are going to start volunteering with them and I am excited. In this recession, we all need help!!
How do you get into a vegetable co op? I've heard people talk about it but do not know what it is. Do you?

I've heard about it, but it's not in my area.

The price sounds fantastic. I don't think I was too impressed with the type of food they offered though. I think they included unhealthy stuff. Their website link isn't working for me right now.

However, checking out for services like this in your area is a great idea! Some cities have their own similar, but different programs.

I've heard of several in my city. We have giveaway centers for the really poor, community shopping centers for certain neighborhoods, and a fruit and veggie community shopping for anyone who wants to join.

Have you all heard of Angel Food Ministries? If there is a site in your area, you can receive a week's worth of food, predetermined, for $30.00. Just wanted to share!!

I have to say I am impressed too. Most of the people I've met on Freecycle are the way she is. Giving is a good thing!! From what I understand, its to get rid of your clutter and help others at the same time. I have really appreciated it!

I'm still impressed she gave it away on freecycle.

She could have sold it for something. Or she could have given it someone she knew for Christmas.

I've heard of freecycle and visited it. I haven't given anything away on it or received anything from it. People are actually giving away Wiis? I'm amazed. (I did hear that people got furniture and dishes from it, but nothing so new as a Wii.)

HI everyone! I'[m pretty new here and wondered if you all had heard of Freecycle. I you google it you will find the Yahoo groups where they operate. I joined two groups in my area and they are currently giving away Wiis, PS2, refrigerators, furniture, etc. It's better to recycle and when on a budget, it really helps!!

Great article, thanks for sharing!

As a side note; keep working on your budget. I am finding it easier to make the dollar stretch the longer I keep pluggin' along. By buying NO prepared foods and cooking from scratch I can make healthier meals and bigger batches to freeze for later. I hope you all had and enjoyed I happy and healthy Thanksgiving. Elle

Diane, you are SO-O-O-O-o-o right!!!! Time is the hardest of all to budget!!!!

I found this today & thought I would share:

"14 Tips for Starting and Sticking With It
Stop Failure Before it Starts" -- By Julie Isphording, former Olympian

For some of us out there, if we could just convince ourselves that there is enough time in the day to exercise, we could be on track to a great fitness program. For others, we get started but quickly lose momentum and give up. To help get started and stay on track, here are a few tips:

1) Throw away the bathing suit you wore in high school… and the memory too. It’s normal to have a mental image of yourself when you last exercised like a fiend. But if that image is from high school, you could be in big trouble. Even if it’s from last year, forget it. Remember as little as possible of what you used to look like. Starting today, make new memories.

2) Prepare. We already know you don’t have the time, so write it down like an appointment every day. You wouldn’t cancel an appointment, why would you cancel on yourself? Aren’t you important too?

3) Start slowly. Do much less than what you’re capable of. Take a 20-minute walk if you’re returning to exercise. You might feel like it’s not enough, but it’s a good start.

4) Get the family involved. Run while your daughter rides her bike. Go to a local track and let the kids play their own games. Run with your spouse. Sign up for a local 10K. Walk with your son. Celebrate with a little something special after every activity.

5) Where are your friends? Four words, four reasons – motivation, inspiration, determination, conversation. Surround yourself with friends who think positive and live large.

6) Put the pain in perspective. When the going gets tough, remember that you have survived 600 carpools, 540 loads of laundry (this month), 41 baseball games, 230 dinners and one family vacation. What’s the big deal?

7) Allow yourself to slow down. You’re driving this bus! For the first time today, you are in control.

8) Sign up for a race. It’s a goal to strive for and adds a little meaning to your everyday workout.

9) Run/walk in public. Be proud of your accomplishment. Take in all the sites and be an inspiration to others.

10) Just show up. Go to the gym, class, or the park. Once you’re there, it’s hard to say no. 98% of life is showing up.

11) Eat. Follow a healthy eating pattern. If you limit your calorie intake, you will not have enough energy to work out and your metabolism will slow down.

12) Understand your energy cycle. There are peaks during our days. Even during the week. Try to complete your workout when you feel good about yourself.

13) Wallow in your greatness. You can exercise to become a better exerciser, or you can exercise to become a better mother, a better father, doctor, teacher, or a better friend – or you can exercise to become BETTER. Be proud of that accomplishment.

14) Have fun. Where’s your childlike spirit? When you can make workouts "playouts," you’ve got it made.

Don’t give up on yourself. After all, it’s never too late to be that healthy person you might have been.

Enjoy!!!!

That is soooooooo true Diane!!! I am in the process of moving and so am finding that if I do not budget my time, I get nothing done, LOL. Because SP is so important to me, I have budgeted time, even with the move, to log in everyday and touch base with my teams. Thank you so for the information this team has provided! I have been able to save a considerable amount and still eat healthy because of the information offered. Now, if only you could find a way for me to bank some time!!! LMBO Have a great week, Elle

Sometimes I find it hard to keep a balance between exercise, computer time, and all the other things I have to do.

Probably one of the hardest things for many of us to budget is our time!

emoticon How sad to see that this team seems to taking a downhill slide. Not only does this team offer a much needed way to stretch our dollars; the team leader is awesome and so very motivational. However, a leader can only lead you to the water, she can't make you drink. Every team needs the input and participation of its members. Due to health reasons, I have been on a Spark Break - however, I am doing and feeling better so a getting back in the fray! I hope to see more participation here, more ideas and a re-dedication to health and happiness.

C'mon guys and gals - let's brain storm and get active once more!!! Hugs, Elle

It's been quite. How has everyone been doing? It's been a very busy week for me and I really don't know how it got there lol. I actually was able to get to my local natural food store yesterday and had fun. I was able to bulk up on the grains and for a small cost. That is always good on the pocket.

I think I could log on to SP at work, but I don't. For one thing it would distract me from other things I should be doing at work.

I could do it before and after work and at lunch time, but i rather do it before leaving for work and after coming home than at work before and after I start.

I might start logging in after I've had lunch. That would make sense to log what I've eaten. OTOH, I've just started logging my lunch and snacks before I go. It's all planned and packed. Why not log it?

Congrats, LITERB93, on the 3 lb. loss! emoticon

Hey all!
Been another crazy week in my world. Busy Busy Busy. I really miss not being able to get on spark people at work. But my new job has the site blocked along with many others, so I have to wait till I get home in the evenings, and by the time I fix dinner, eat, clean up, play with dogs, go to gym it only leaves a few minutes for sparking. emoticon So I get in what I can.

I had been stuck at a plateau for about a month and I finally managed to loose 3lbs this week. I am so excited. I finally broke through my plateau. emoticon emoticon Happy Dance!!!

Hope everyone is having great success as well. emoticon

I was doing the clothes exchange with a friend who was losing weight along with me. She was smaller then me so it was working out. Now it's not so good for me because I am smaller then her lol. Now I got to find people smaller then me lol. I usually go to a second hand shop for clothes. I hope that I can plateau soon that way I wont have to worry about it to much anymore. Never thought I would have to be saying that lol.

Hooking up with people who are smaller and losing weight is a great idea!

I guess I need to encourage more of my smaller friends to lose weight so they can hand me up there clothes!

I'm still looking for someone to pass some of my big clothes on to... I've been giving them to the Salvation Army and I can continue to do so, but sometimes it's nice to know who is getting the clothes.

Or alternatively, if I can find a place to sell the clothes! Or trade! I'd love it if a store would give me a pair of jeans for every 2 pairs I give them.

And I have 2 nice way too big winter coats...

My biggest mistake was going to the regular stores and that was a big mistake because I was constantly losing weight. Now I hooked up with people who are smaller then me who are still losing weight. I think that is always a great idea.
My biggest problem now is I am a newly vegetarian and it is expensive trying to eat healthy foods. I just started learning how to make some of my own soy burgers. The ones in the store have to much salt and are expensive. So if anyone has any recipes or ideas I can sure use them. Thanks in advance.

Sometimes I think eating healthy is going to make me broke, but not in the way you are probably thinking.

It's all the new clothes I have to buy!

I'm shopping the super sales. Discontinued summer lines. Looking for clothes that will be fine in the fall/winter. Dark colored pants. New tops that I can wear even in the fall, and maybe with something on top in winter.

I refuse to pay more than $15 for a pair of pants because I know they won't fit next summer.

Cool! Glad someone is getting mileage out of that recipe. Be sure you mash the beans really good. I wonder if a blender might not be the right tool for the job.

Today's Tips & Reflections:

"The best inspiration is not to outdo others, but to outdo ourselves"......Anonymous

"Winning Victory Against Yourself"

No one likes to lose. The thrill of victory after competition is hard to match. But the wins that leave the most significant, long-term impressions are the ones where you win against yourself. Beating a friend in a game of hoops is much less meaningful than setting a personal best time while running. We live in a highly competitive world, and everything around us screams that we've got to be number one in order to feel successful. Truly though, the best measuring sticks are your past and your potential--not against someone else's standards. Raise the bar for yourself!

It's a soup. Usually made with beets although I have a recipe that doesn't call for beets at all.

It's also usually served with sour cream.

hi, I'm just jumping in here and would like to say I think a veggie or fruit of the week sounds fun, especially the fruit, I need to learn to eat fruit because I'm a veggie lover!

I think I'm on enough weigh-in challenges. And some people here may want to maintain, not lose.

We could have challenges to get more exercise, or to prepare a meal that costs less than x amount a person (difficult, though because we all are in different zones and prices vary so much)or to come up with the most creative way to cook something...

we could have a virtual walk...
we could have an exercise of the day...
(Although SP already has one!)

or a veggie of the week...

Maybe a veggie of the month one week
a fruit of the month another one...
