My non-scale victory was walking past the hospital gift shop when I could hear the candy bars calling my name.

I love your spirit and you're still young; wait until you're 70 as I am. I've had a series of mishaps over the past two years that have really impacted my ability to maintain exercise habits. I'm trying to get back on track with home therapy exercise plus the chair exercises with this team. I had to laugh when you said you went for a walk with a cane and remained upright! I deal with that everyday and it's so nice to find someone who has the same trouble. I'm willing to bet you also believe your cane is temporary (as I do) and exercise will be the cure all. I firmly believe we both have difficulties stemming from physical inactivity whatever your circumstance. Gayle

My non-scale victory is being more active before March of this year until now I was partially lazy using my disability as an excuse not to do any type of exercise but turning 51 years old I had to make an serious decision about my health if I don't make some changes now and for go I will be going down real fast with my health so I have to do this become more healthy and exercises and with this awesome team leaders and team members motivate me to do that. emoticon emoticon

One of the tasks that another online diet support group that I belong has us do is take our monthly measurements. If you aren't doing this, I recommend that you begin. It seems I am a very slow loser (pound wise) this year but already I have lost 3.75 inches in the month of March. Overall; I have lost 8.75 inches since January 1st based on the workouts, strengthening and toning exercises that I do. Not bad for a 60 1/2 year old who is mainly sedentary. emoticon .

I have more non-scale victories than I do scale victories but victory is victory, right? I really liked reading all of yours. It is so nice when you realize that losing weight and getting in shape is more than a number but oh so much more. Keep up the good work, all! emoticon

My most recent one was being able to wear a pair of black skin-tight work out pants (you know the ones I am talking about) this past Monday. I have been doing a lot of strength and toning exercises for a year now and it is paying off. I belong to another online team and one of our daily challenges was to start out the New year with doing 1 rep of 1 exercise, adding another rep each day, then the next month adding a new exercise and starting all over with that, etc. This will continue to the last day of this year. Right now, today, I will be doing 86 deep squats, 55 pushups and 27 lunges. Next month, we will add crunches. Wow, I can tell you I have never seen my body get so toned so fast as doing this. And, it only takes about 12 minutes to do them all.

I also took my first walk outdoors (with my cane). I didn't last long nor did I go far but I was vertical. emoticon

So, those are my NSV for this time around.

Pam

After a couple of months of laziness and not too much healthy eating, I started again my controlled eating menu planning.

I have to keep in mind that success breeds success.

Every time I talk myself out of caving to a an urge to emotionally eat. It's a HUGE victory since I have been using food for "comfort" for so many years. Pretty much a lifetime, really. It's just that since I got M.E./CFS that I've gained weight, due to mobility issues and pain.

So now, emotional eating/food addiction plus a sedentary lifestyle = 200+ extra pounds.

As of January 29th, 2014, I have fought the urge to emo-eat, with the exception of one day where I just wasn't strong enough to fight it.

Each moment of each day that I am not using food for anything other than nutrition is an enormous NSV for me.

I love this idea! I found this group through my Spark Friend Az_Cat_Person.

I have read several places that we should drink half our body weight in ounces of water, but even being a wateraholic, this was tough at first. However, I think I have finally mastered it as I do it almost 95% of the time, so I'm claiming it as a NSV even though it has positively influenced the SV too. My skin looks and feels better too...gotta love that!

Looking forward to reading everyone else's NSVs soon!

Despite chronic infections and most recently my first ever root canal (I've never even had a cavity so this was kind of a big deal) I have not gotten depressed, just a little bummed out. And today I did a mile walk on my DVD! I have plans to do some yoga for my back a little later if my left knee and hip stop hurting. Overall I am very proud of myself!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

emoticon on your PhDs! That takes both time and commitment!

Wow! JAOTAO you have done a great job losing weight and I know this team has helped because it is helping me too. I like the idea of exercise before a chocolate reward. I read about it in an exercise article somewhere on SP. I am using an ergometer with my arms and the SPAT is counting it for me. What an incentive the SPAT can be! I'm limiting myself to one chocolate a day, but I'm exercising more so that is a NSV! emoticon

My NSV for the past 3months has been completely doing away with drinking diet soda, I stopped drinking regular soda a long many years ago, Then when I became a type 2 diabetic about 4 years ago I began consumming a lot of diet soda, but for several reasons I just felt like I needed to stop that altogether too. So beginning about the middle of October, 2013. I started drinking nothing but 7 pints of water a day and some decaf, tea and coffee. So now its almost the middle of January 2014, and really I don't even miss it. emoticon
I don't feel so bloated and I sleep better, and have a few extra dollars to spend on other things.

Oh boy!! Do I know that feeling - instead of having the coat/jacket flapping about like Superman's cape - you actually get the beauty of fastening it and having both sides of you protected and warm!!
Wonderful - I'm really happy for you -
and you are right - "normal" people have no idea of the problems that we face - and of how important these not always so little victories are to us!!

So many "normal" people never understand the little victories that make us feel great. For the first time in several years I can button my winter coat and have room enough to not feel like a stuffed bear. That is my biggest VICTORY of the year so far.

I pass my air brake over-the-road tests. DMV was closed Friday for the holiday. Went down there today. The worker kept looking at my ole license and now. She commented on how "WOW, about the weight loss". When my stomach settled down and then I looked at the picture too; yes; it is very noticeable the weight loss look in my face.

One of the trainers I worked with before the testing simply said. "Hold you head high and be positive and confident you will pass this phrase of required updates. Take a breath see how far you have come with your weight loss. It's just another goal you can do." I guess I really needed to hear. I wasn't thinking that these types of goals should be put on the achievement list. Secret, I was getting dragged down not seeing more weight moving.

Yes, most big trucks operate with air brakes. Now school buses are being equipped with air brakes. My laminated permit arrived in the mail last week. I was supposed to start on the road training today; but, something came up so the trainer had to cancel, it is rescheduled for Monday. I am a little spook about driving with air brakes because the written material said it takes longer to stop the vehicle not like the response time we have with hydraulic brakes. It is what it is as technology and equipment changes come along to keep our jobs.

emoticon I was able to complete 2 miles walk this morning in the 40 minutes between routes. Surprised the heck out of me. I also was able to tackle medium size grade hill this afternoon; man when I got to the top panting and holding my side so glad I had my water along. Then going down it wasn't as bad. I finally conquered it instead of it conquering me! Now to work on being able to breath better.
Have a positive day and chat more later....Sarah

WooHoo - I think - what is an air brake licence?? It sounds like trucks - they have air brakes - do you drive trucks?? If so you are braver than me - I couldn't get into one let alone drive it (or maybe I could drive it but it certainly would not be safe to have anything else on the road!! LOL!!

Your walking sounds to be going great!!
Keep it up!!

I have been reading a few of these and they are fantastic - this is what its all about!!

A couple of comments - When you exercise it releases endorphins - hormones - that give you that happy, energetic feeling -that some of you commented on. That's good!! See you don't need drugs - you can get "high" on exercise!! LOL!!

Also this not losing weight on the scales but getting thinner and needing smaller clothes is right too - what is probably happening is that you are losing body fat and gaining muscle. Muscle weighs the same as fat but takes up less space or volume. Therefore by losing fat and gaining muscle you will weigh the same but be smaller in size!!
Many people are afraid this will make them like those muscle bound weight lifters - NOT A CHANCE!! All you are doing is strengthening your muscles and replacing to a degree muscle fibes lost during your sedentary time - thus becoming "normal" - and this is the aim of the exercise!!

When I was into the doctor the scale says the same as last time in. Nonetheless, the clothes are shrinking. I had to put more of what I had in the don't fit box. I purchased some smaller clothes. I am able to walk 1/2 miles breathing much easier as I do it. I like to think seeing the deer along my walking trail as wonderful non-scale victory as well. Sarah

Oh wow!! I love the fact that you're recognizing non-scale victories. I've really, really had great success since my lone heart attack 14 years past. At the time all my numbers were in sad shape. I couldn't exercise in the beginning due to pain of angina. I am here now and with perseverance now have them all in check (chol, BP, and cardio). Cardiologist says I don't know what you've been doing but keep it up. Words of high praise to me. So, I'm encouraging others; it's not the pace you set for the race but do something each day. I'm starting again with exercise with bad back, diabetes, and painful shoulder from a fall one year ago. I CAN do it!

Wow wow and WOW!!! LOL

Only my 2nd day of actually committing to moving my body more on a daily basis. I haven't quite decided on a routine quite yet but I have got me exercise for today in. Intellectually I get the health benefits to being active, ie, heart lungs etc. But at this very moment I am struck by just how drastically different inhabiting my body feels. I'm struck by the difference being mindfully connected to my body feels compared to being in the checked out numbed state I have been existing in.

Again, JUST WOW!!! I feel foolish, playful and giddy!!

Running a streak of great blood sugar readings. Scabs and blisters on shins are getting smaller and legs are less swollen. No junk food in weeks consumed. Joined a 5% challenge.

I am including, besides the eating and exercise streaks, some personal, like maintaining my bedroom tidy every single day. That's what I do first thing after waking up, before working out. So far, two months in a row, it is becoming a habit.

SKINNYPAT62,
Did you know that muscle weighs more than fat but is smaller? You might be gaining muscle and that is why people can see the loss on you, but you can't see it on the scale. Hope that is the case for you.

There is a covered concrete area outside my apt. that is 32 feet long (I just measured). I used to walk the circle once and be dying from pain then I got myself to do 2 circles, then 3 and tonight I managed to do 4 circles with minimal pain! I think it is because of the 20 min sparky workout I did today! WOOHOO!! I just wanted to share my success.

I had a nice loss this week (2.5 lbs.). It has taken a while to get moving again but I didn't give up. I have gotten several comments that I am slimming down and my loss is noticeable so that helps me to keep on going. I do get discouraged and ticked when the scale brings me down, but I never, ever give up! emoticon t

STRESS80,

I said I hated the video, cause it kicked my butt and hurt my back because I can't seem to maintain good posture. It was a good video and I will probably do it again because, as I said, if it helps my back it is worth it. I did the 20 min resistance band workout today (seated) and it kicked my butt too, my legs more than my back this time. She did some back stretches which I think really helped. I did lose 3 lbs but even at 345 with my big belly and weak core, it is so hard to maintain good posture and I have a hard time holding my abdominal muscles in tight.
I am looking at all the vids and I like them very much. I just came in to post my success of completing the 20 min vid. I know that things will get easier and I can deal with the good workout pain as I progress.
Happy days!

Lisa emoticon

Paula about the You Tube Channel addy I am copying and pasting Emmabe1's letter to team:

6/29/2013 - 5:20 AM
Subject: Chair Exercise YouTube Channel
Message: Hi team
I have put a new button on my web site chairexercisefun.com/ on the right hand side of the front page Using CE team YouTube Channel

This button takes you to directions on how to find the exercise video you are looking for
The first 2 pages are directions on using the YouTube channel and after that is a list of all 81 Playlists =- all of which contain videos

Every one of those playlist headings has been linked to the playlist of the same name. All you need do is to select the playlist you want and click on that name you should be taken to it!! No hunting anymore!!

So now you have no excuses for not being able to find a suitable video to exercise to with a choice of 81 playlists with separate videos in those playlists you will never ruin out of choice!!

Ann

It also works to click on the team logo picture at the top of the message board forums and click on a playlist then it takes you to the playlist on the Chair Exercise Channel

LVME7X,

When I first started doing the seated exercise I felt like it was not enough. But SOON I started to like it because I could feel it changing my energy and I also was losing inches. Now I love doing them and if you can find the fun ones on youtube it makes a big difference. I can't remember the guy that is really funs name. But he does the chair salsa video. I know that EMMA ( leader of the chair exercise team) has lots and lots of fun chair videos on the chair exercise channel. I don't have the link handy right now but you could write to her and ask her I'm sure she would love to help you find funner exercises to do seated. Keep up the work you will soon notice you feel better after doing them. ~Paula

Jean that is awful to not be able to breathe well. And its not good at all to have your BP drop! Is there nothing that can be done about it? adjusting your meds for exercise times or having oxygen to breathe as you exercise? With all you are going thru its not fair to not be able to breathe or have to worry about your BP dropping so you can't just relax and enjoy your exercise. To me exercise is self motivating. The more I do, the way my body gains mobility as I work and the loss of pain as I exercise coupled with the peace of mind just makes me want to do more and more! Of course I can only increase slowly but I am always looking for a new exercise or video to slip into my routines!

Thanks for the welcome back!

I do my steps very early and then my walk using my pedometer as soon as dawn breaks....In afternoon I use my Activcycle for arms and legs. I do 4 1/2 over 71 minutes.....I have learned that exercise gives me a peace of mind that I just enjoy... I would enjoy it better if I could breath...my O2 level will drop to 82 at times and my BP drops so I gear what and all I can do to to these numbers and how my oncologist approves minutes....

Wow everyone is doing some great stuff! Jean its emoticon to see you back and doing so well. 130 minutes of exercise a day? That's twice what I do and more. Something for me to look forward to! How did you get up that far? Do you do it in sets or all straight through with no stops! And what kind of exercises are you doing? Tell all woman you are really something!

STRESS80 well its been hot in Chicago too! But we are managing to keep cool enough to stand it. At least with the AC blowing it takes the humidity out so the heat doesn't drape over you like a wet blanket. Makes it hard to draw a breath! DH DS and I always celebrate "September Day" the first of September as it means the weather should be getting cooler then. Although the climate is running about two months slow this year so who knows?

I have been able to finally figure out why I was always still hungry when a meal was supposed to be done. It wasn't emotional triggers most of the time it was external cues that I had trained myself subconsciously and made into a habit. Now I am more aware and have started working on a new program of training the good eating habits I want, like only eating in a designated place for eating, No tv or books or other distractions to take my mind off how the food tastes and if my body is hungry or full. We set a timer for 20 minutes and make the meal last that long because that's how long it takes for your body to signal fullness, and when the timer goes off, we finish what we are eating and then clear the dishes away and leave the table. Oh and we are using small plates like salad plates and small bowls, like snack bowls. Makes the portions look larger and it's Working So Well! Have not had the still feeling hungry problem for 4 days! What a difference to have the worry as to the cause and how to handle it off of my mind!!

emoticon Well, I made it to the pool. 20 minutes without pain after. Kept it slow and easy--no laps. Will go again tomorrow. Walked to a neighbor's house with the crutch.

emoticon Noted when I was organizing and cleaning the kitchen closet that I have ignored much of what was in there. I found 7 boxes of bars, boxes of uneaten cookies, and other junk food. Seems that I am not drawn to them any more. I even found two boxes of girl scout cookies! That's a first. Last year they would be gone the same day as delivery.

That's great Jean you are going farther and making more progress daily. Feel proud of yourself. I know I'm excited when I can do more with out sitting down all the time. Keep up the excellent work.

I was able to increase my steps yesterday more than 3 times and was able to increase time on activcycle by 5 minutes!

When I went to the clinic yesterday it was the first day that I had walked all the way to the lab w/o sitting down!

Finally made it through 5 days of working out. Walking and toning exercises. Took 2 days off. But didn't cop out once when I felt like not working out which is almost everyday.

Yesterday was day 10 (the date the oncologist said I could go back to exercising as a normal person...walking has been OK but I wanted to get back on my legs and arm "cycle".)

I can't believe that I am so out of shape! I made 15 minutes on legs but only 5 minutes on my arms...but this is a victory when you consider the "couch potato" that I have been!

Well it's really not fair! emoticon

I just bought all new shorts, shirts, undies etc. The shorts are all getting to big for me again! The tops are starting to get big for me again as well! lol I even bought them snug because I am still losing weight!

At least I have a great sewing machine and can take them in soon. I'm glad that most of them have ties in the waist so I can just tie it tighter to keep the shorts up.

That is exciting about getting your crockpot. I love mine. I can start homecooked meals when I'm going to be gone all day and it is so much more healthier than eating out on our way home. You will love it!

Still trying on my almost fit pants and so far so good. None have not fit me yet. hoorah!

My crockpot arrived today! Hurray!! This is a double NSV because now I can sit and do the prep and then put every thing is the crockpot and let it cook, MYSELF without DH doing all the cooking. Which is not always that terrific, although when he uses my recipes it comes out fairly okay.

Paula if you aren't ready for video's that are full length yet, start by sitting in a chair and just moving your arms and legs in different movements as many times as you can just an easy amount for not long a set. If you do it three or four times a day it starts to build up range of motion and loosen and move muscles that were unused. Plus SP has some great short videos to help you start and there are a lot more on The Chair exercise teams You tube channel, click on the team logo for the link.

My non scale victory is that I found out this week that I am not fond of my two worse comfort foods, full fat/sugar ice cream and Box mix mashed potatoes. Well really mashed potatoes period. I can taste the fat, the sugar, the extra sodium and the fatty butter/dairy taste in them. Low fat low sugar ones taste odd also and so I would rather not have them at all. And I perfer a plain potato with maybe a little low sodium low fat gravy over it to the alternative. So I've learned this week that it feels like punishing myself to Eat those foods and now I have find healthier ways to deal with my emotions I used to use them to cover up. Eating healthy is a never ending string of problem solving challenges that I am learning to love facing down, I ordered my new Crockpot today and now I will be able to do some sauces that I love like Spaghetti sauce without the sodium and junk in it, in amounts that will last me and be much better for me than the cr** in cans and bottles and boxes!

emoticon emoticon You are both doing awesome! ! And when I started out I could only do 3-5 minutes of any thing treadmill, DVD's etc. Now 2 years later I can do about 18 minutes on the treadmill without pain. You can do it but you also want to do it safely and build up to like you are doing. DVD's are still a challenge but I do my chair exercise salsa video when I can I really like him ( David Stamp ) he keeps it easy and fun to do.

The smaller size is way awesome. In fact they too are a little loose but not falling down YET! LOL

Keep up the good work ladies!

emoticon Glo! emoticon You'll get there the way you are going about it!

Paula how does it feel to be sporting a smaller size of jeans? I'd be walking on air!

I got thru my last stomach surgery and I'm home recovering. About a week ago I was a little down because I weighed my primary doctors and I weighed 263 lbs then a couple of days later I weighed in at my endocrinologists and the scale said 268 so I thought all the extra emergency snacks I've had to eat because I have been having low blood sugar attacks had made me put on 5 hard fought pounds. But yesterday at the hospital the scale said 263 so now I'm thinking it was just a difference in the scales as I have not changed until yesterday my eating and I stopped exercising to get ready for surgery and didn't have any more low BSattacks. Just goes to show you what you can put yourself through when you pay too much attention to the scale and not enough to measurements and gained abilities like being able to do more exercises or wear a smaller size clothing.
