Times of London Videos

Thank you to TWILAQ1 for this message
The following videos are on youtube.com and are from The Times of London newspaper. Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies presents mainly stretches with some strength moves (in Part 5). You will need to pause the videos to do all of the recommended repetitions, as she simply presents the moves for you to be doing on your own.

Many of us spend a lot of time at our desks, on the computer, especially, so these are stretches to help us move the muscles a bit.
Enjoy

Entering Chair Exercises into the Fitness tracker

Since there are several types of Chair Exercises we need first to establish which type is which!!
If you are in doubt and the DVD you have isn’t listed (I can’t list them all!!) please refer to the definition of Aerobic and Strength exercise in the previous message!!

As far as Anne Burnell’s video links – Aerobic exercises are called aerobic
Stretching - is counted as Strength
Yoga is counted as Strength
Strength is counted as Strength
Exercise Bands are counted as Strength
As far as DVDs –
Stronger Seniors DVD – are totally Strength except the aerobic section (20 min) which is aerobic
Chair Dancing – The Stretch are Strength
The Sit Down and Tone Up, and any other TONE DVD are Strength
Any Dancing type DVDs are Aerobic

OK – now we have decided what type of exercise we are doing – we have to enter it in our tracker!!
To enter a STRENGTH Exercise
Click on –My Fitness- found under My Trackers at the top of the page - – this opens the Exercise tracker!!
-
In Exercise Tracker - click on Track Strength Exercises
At bottom of the panel that opens
Add a new Exercise
Fill in the exercise (eg : Anne Burnell video – Yoga) ) Leave the rest empty( if you are doing exercises with weights you may need to fill in the reps and weights boxes) -
then tick - add to favourites
- Click Add

The next time you want to repeat that exercise
Click - Track Strength Exercises
Select the exercise from the- Add from workouts list
Click – Add

To enter AEROBICS exercise
Go to - My Fitness
Click - Add Cardio
In the search box -type - Low impact aerobics
A list will come up
select - Aerobics General Low impact
Highlight this
Under the search results is a box - fill in how many mins you did this for!!
Tick - add to favourites
click - Add exercise

In future -
Click - Add cardio
open favourites tab in panel that appears
select exercise
click - add exercise

Ok - I hope that sorts the exercise tracker

• I think there may be some confusion over Strength and aerobic exercise – particularly as regards entering them in the tracker!! These definitions might help
• WHAT IS STRENGTH TRAINING?
Strength training is the process of exercising with progressively heavier resistance for the purpose of strengthening the musculoskeletal system. It is also referred to as weight lifting, weight training, body sculpting, toning, body building, and resistance training
• AEROBIC EXERCISE: Brisk physical activity that requires the heart and lungs to work harder to meet the body's increased oxygen demand. Aerobic exercise promotes the circulation of oxygen through the blood.
• Examples of aerobic exercise include running, swimming and cycling and Chair Dancing dancing DVDs – BUT NOT the Tone DVDs or Stretch DVDs!!
• STRETCHING - does not count as either Strength or aerobic exercise - but it is necessary after both strength and aerobic exercise It doesn't burn calories!!
As far as entering in the tracker – Strength exercises go under – Strength - and you will probably have to enter your own into the tracker – You can do this by clicking on Strength exercises –then in the panel that opens – down the bottom – enter your exercise with reps if needed – then tick – add to favourites – and click – add
For Aerobic exercise – it goes under Low impact aerobics – and enter the time you spend doing it!!
See – clear as mud!! - LOL!!

Review – CHAIR YOGA DVD – available from Chair Dancing International – www.chairdancing.com

Here is a little of what I have learned in my research into the benefits of doing Chair Yoga.
It is a very valuable tool for strengthening our Core.

Core strengthening exercises are very important.
We have muscles in the lower back and lower abdomen.... These are the muscles that hold us upright !!
These muscles determinate when we are sedentary – and we suffer a weakness... which then give rise to unsteadiness, over hanging stomachs, posture and even urinary and bowel incontinence.

Chair Yoga is also approved by the Arthritis Foundation to ease the aches and pains of arthritis sufferers, and is very beneficial for people with sedentary lifestyles. Chair Yoga is a must to counteract the affects of computer work, gardening, crafts, painting and even piano playing. For many people just starting off with yoga, Yoga with a Chair is an easy and gratifying way to get started.

What benefits can you expect from Chair Yoga
Increased flexibility and mobility
Increased circulation in the feet, legs, knees, hips, shoulders and elbows, which helps the general well-being of the heart.

The breathing techniques used in this approach are very effective for people with emphysema and asthma and aid in heart function
A sense of peace – and calm can be gained from doing these exercises in a slow, measured way. Yoga is a slow form of exercise and incorporates meditation. It should be practiced regularly and you should never over twist or stretch the body.

Chair Yoga is great for beginners or severely disabled.

Would be quite valuable for our more exercise challenged members to start out on.
Looks are quite deceiving ... it is not quite as easy as we think ... It is a good test of our abilities to control our movements.
I also thought these Chair Yoga exercises would also be good for sufferers of Parkinsons Disease.. also for Sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis and Arthritis

Resistance Bands.- a small write up!!
They are a cheap and easy exercise tool for people in wheel chairs, or with limited mobility, and also can be used on your bed!.

I started off with mine (A$7.00 at Kmart) by hooking them to the bottom of my bed !.Then lying on top of the bed without a pillow (if possible) and just pulling the handles towards me . this was giving me a form of core exercise that I badly needed to help strengthen my back.

Then I started to sit on the side of the bed and place the middle of them under my feet and pull towards me. I then graduated to hanging them on a hook on the door.

I just discovered a seated stepper called a "Sit-N-Stroll" that I've ordered & am looking forward to using. It has an LCD display that displays steps, time, & calories burned. Sounds great for use on "painful knee" days!

A relatively new series of DVDs has been produced by "Stronger Seniors" There are 3 in the series - all chair exercises.
Stronger Seniors Stretch and strength - a set of 2 DVDs that are recomended to use on alternate days. They cover all levels of fitness fron "never having exercised" to fairly fit. The workouts are varied and can be used completely or in sections and the movements are changed often enough to prevent boredom!!
The directions are very clear and easy to follow.

Also available are - A Pilates DVD. and a Yoga DVD

The Stronger Seniors Web site is

You can also get to all the other information about Bob Klein and Zookinesis from this page on left side.

I highly recommend if you have $40 to spend on DVD’s you can’t go wrong with getting either of the first two at top and the one for weight reduction. There is no shipping charges if in USA.

I am very overweight 279lb right now, have very bad knees that require me to only be able to do sitting tapes, plus I have a very bad heart. I do have to skip some of the leg movements and some neck ones but I can do all the rest.

Here is a link to me doing a demonstration of one of the first tapes listed above.

Edit by Emmabe1 - 1st March 2010.
I got a copy of the Zookinesis - Chair Exercises for Weight Reduction - this morning - and watched it!!
It consists of extremely slow, gentle and simple exercises that might increase flexibility in a person who has been totally sedentary for a long period. It has no aerobic exercises.

Exercise Pedalers

I have been trying to find out how many calories the exercise pedalers use - for our fitness trackers.
The nearest I can come is stationary bike, but since those usually don't use the arms I am entering both arms and legs separately!!
Anyway - I used a web site that I often use for this sort of thing if you want to see
www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.p
hp

What that decided was - for every 5 min light work (no resistance, or very little) - 28 cal
for every 5 min moderate work (medium resistance) - 65 cal
For every 5 min vigerous (full resistance) - 98 cal

I hope this helps some of you!!
Its actually a great source of exercise (much cheaper than exercise bikes, and much easier for people of limited mobility) - and the upper arm muscles and upper leg muscles would be developed well.
It would be possible to use dumbells on the thighs to increase the work they do too - if one ever gets that far!!
Amazon has a great supply at various prices!!

emoticon IDEAS FOR EXERCISE FOR THOSE IN WHEELCHAIRS emoticon

Since I notice that we have recently welcomed some Wheelie Sparks into our team – I thought we should have some ideas for exercise suitable for Wheelies.
I will say at this stage that I am not a Wheelie – and these are only ideas I have come across. I hope they are of use.

Exercise links for wheelchair bound people

www.associatedcontent.com/article/11

/h
ow-to-exercise-if-you-are-wheelchairR>-bound/

exercise.about.com/library/blseatedu
pp
erbody.htm
- This one has diagrams on how to do the exercises

These are a few of the links I found by Googleing - exercises for the wheelchair bound. There were lots more !!

The "Chair Dancing " series of DVDs would be ok if you just did the upper body movements and any lower body movement that you may be capable of.
Details for these can be found in the DVD links below

It has actually proved fairly difficult and I will continue to try to update this list. Obviously what you can do will depend on your own personal degree of immobility and fitness (as it does with other mobility challenged people)

Spark Coach Jen suggested – A program on PBS – “Sit and be Fit” site They have a web site too :
www.sitandbefit.org/
where you can buy DVDs

There I also a site
www.chairobics.com/
that states their exercises can be used by Wheelies

There are a number of videos on U-Tube - but the content changes - so if you go to
www.youtube.com/
and search "chair exercise" you will find a large selection that you can select suitable exercises from

Chair Aerobics for Everyone – has a DVD specifically for Wheelies. And a sitting Chair Boxing dvd that could also be good. Arms pumping certainly raises my heart rate, even without leg work.

There is a free video clip for Wheelie exercise at

The DVDs from
www,chairdancing,com
state they can be used in a wheelchair.
I personally use these and I can attest that you would get a good aerobic workout by doing just the arm/body movements of any of the dance dvds.
The coupon number A15Q2673E. will give a discount on these DVDs

The Stronger Seniors Company also produces some good DVDc for Chair Exercise that could be used by some Wheelies too
They can be found at
www.strongerseniors.com
If you use the code : SPARK - you will receive a discount on the DVDs

If you want a dvd - it is worth checking Amazon US - they have a lot, but the coupon codes will not work in Amazon Search "Chair Exercise DVDs" or "Wheelchair exercise DVDs"

A lot of areas have special facilities for wheelchairs - and some include exercise - like basketball and tennis - but I suggest you contact your local physios or Doctor who should know what is locally available. Remember it is far better exercise and more fun if you can exercise with others in a similar position.

I also posted a message on the Main Exercise Board asking for ideas – this answer was from SIRENALATINA

Yeah, absolutely punching exercises with weighted gloves to add more resistance...punches up and down. I am not sure if her legs can be used at all...

But if not then rows!
It's got to be aerobic to push a wheel chair up hill..intervals of that perhaps? Think about the training that wheelchair olympics people do. They basically cycle with their arms instead of legs - very aerobic. They have peddlars for the arms.

Also a medicine ball workout where the ball is weighted and she moves it around in different ways and throws it around. People in wheel chairs also play tennis and that is super aerobic!

Perhaps hit against a wall with the raquet and wheel around to hit the ball. I played with someone who was in a wheel chair - and he was super fit!
