Your body doesn’t know the difference between fantasy and reality so when you (the inhabitant of that body) genuinely believe something to be happening – even when it’s not (like when you dream) – your body will respond (physiologically) as though the experience is completely real. Your cells don’t understand imagination but they do respond to it. Which is why dreaming that you’re about to be attacked by a tiger will produce the same neurological, cardio-vascular, respiratory, muscular and endocrine responses as literally being in that situation.
