Craziness - that would describe me- I went out walking and hiking again for hours and hours yesterday. Some was easy walking in the city of Vancouver and then I went back to the rugged trails of Lighthouse Park where I climbed hills and descended mountains... then because I missed a couple of caches I redid parts that I had past by mistake. Noni was so tired near the end that she stayed in the car as I rehiked.
Not only that before we went home I stopped at another Park and walked around it as well enjoying the scenery - it was amazing...
Today my body is screaming at me - don't push it so much in one day - do more everyday not all at once..
You know I will not listen ....

there is something special about being out in the rain and standing still and watching rain drip form your wide brim hat.
I was out walking and geo caching in the pouring rain yesterday and I came to this conclusion as I signed the log book - with head tilted down to sign the log book I watched the water drip off of my hat and I felt satisfied and happy.

I have this book "Best Hikes and Walks of Southwestern British Columbia" and my goal is to hike as many of these hikes as possible in 2014
This hike is listed as easy - OK it was easy but very long - Noni and Dalhouise and I started at Park Royal and walked all the way to the Capilano Lake and Cleveland Dam and over to the hatchery and then back to the parked car.
Noni pedometer read 25,000 steps - about 12 miles and it took us about six and half hours.
-- OK we stopped to take pictures and I looked for Geo caches and of course just to look around and enjoy the scenery.

another weekend repeats it self - but this time I went out for a walk into the cold as an Arctic front comes swooping in. So much for the whispering s of spring.
Soon enough it will be over I am guessing this is the last of winter -- even though I have said this a couple of times already - this is it - winter is over - done no more ..

I have been out and about around the pond and estuary these days and one can't help but notice that the increase in bird songs and chirps not to mention the actual flutter of wings.
Because of my mother - when I was a little boy she would ask every spring for me to find some pussy willows for her and now when I am out and about I am seeing them.
Spring is definitely whispering it's arrival now.

I became dissapointed yesterday.. I tried to put 11 minutes of jogging into my walk and it hurt my knees..

Me thinks I may have to just stick with walking, swimming and hiking if I'm going to save the ol' knees. It's kind of a wake up call that says "Hey you're 50"!!

But I'm very mobil and want to be forever!! and who knows maybe one of these days or perhaps never but I intend on keeping moving!!

As for birding..
Yes, I'd like to learn more about that.. I did a bit when I was young but know so little about birds.

I also did my first back yard bird count last weekend.

Today when I hiked around the pond I was to identify my first Varied Thrush. At first I thought it was an American Robin - but looking through the binoculars I seen the orange striped bars on the wings and over the eye.and a black throat - so to the books I went when I got home - I brought a pen and note book with me to write my observations, and I took a picture too - but that did not turn out so well - but it is clear enough to compare with the book.

I had Dalhouise with me - I dropped his lease on the trail - some times I let him run free at the pond - i had to stop and back track - of all places I had dropped the lease right at the beginning of the trail where I had freed Dalhouise. I thought I had it tucked under my arm -- but it was the empty camera case -- at this place is where I took the camera out of the case to hang around my neck - too many things - hiking pole - binoculars - camera - lease all disrupting my concentration as I look at eagles and other birds.

to top that off it began to rain and then rained harder before I could get back home - but it was a good walk

I went hiking with my friend on the Chief a hike to the First Peak: 1.5-kilometre trail with an elevation gain of 540 metres. (1771.65 feet)
- Next day - I am a little sore but doing well - not going to tackle the other peaks for a few weeks though..

It is cold out side - I hope you have lots of bird seed in your bird feeders.
I had a Steller Jay and a House sparrow - a Starling come to my balcony for the first time today.
I had the regular visitors of Juncos - Chickadees - Northern Flickers come - and so I was surprised to see these newbe's.. It is cold -7c and wind chill ----- that is cold for my area.
I went outside to walk the dog and seen several American robins as i stepped out of the condo door into the cold.
Walking around the pond that is very frozen over today with only a small channel open I spotted two Bald Eagles and sever Mallard Ducks.
I walked a little further along the dike and was able to take pictures of the Common Mergansers female and male - Golden-eye ducks - Gulls - Canadian Geese - Crows.

Did I mention that it is cold - I was dressed warmly but my face was cold as I walked in the Arctic wind..

Grey skies and cool - cool temperatures did not stop me from today's walk
Two bald Eagles sitting in a tree - one was a mature and the other immature. My thoughts - is one a male waiting for a female to mature - OR - is one a parent staying with a sick young one.
Most of the eagles have left the area.
Makes one wonder................

.Walking closer to the pond I find it mostly frozen over - but still enough open channels to keep the ducks happy

I could only find two female Hooded Mergansers that were swimming around with the mallard ducks

Looking up again I spotted the Blue Heron at first I thought it was another eagle - but looking through the binoculars it became obvious it was a Heron. It has the same shape as a perched eagle high up in the upper tree branches.

Not very sunny, but out the door I go back to the Estuary to get some walking in 2 hours worth.
I end my hike with a light drizzle falling - but still I feel revived - happy - joyful - content.
Bird sightings
Blue herons
Bald Eagles
Mallard Ducks
an unknown duck to me
Common Mergansers
Common Goldeneyes
Gulls
other unknown song birds fluttering about in the trees
a Cormorant - I think Pelagic Cormorant not the Brant's Cormorant

over all I am happy

Dalhouise has been sitting by the balcony glass door looking out side showing no intentions that he wants to go outside to do business. I wait around 12:30 I decide he needs to go out and I prepare my self by dressing with my rain pants and coat hat and shoes and put on Dalhouise's rain coat on him. I tell Noni I should not be too long that was a mistake - an hour and half later I return I was enjoying the walk immensely - I was warm and dry totally indulging in the moment of pleasure as rain fell all around me. I could keep walking I was really enjoying this walk but I know Noni is preparing lunch so I had better go back home.

Well- that was an early morning thought - the actual truth was I did go out side and Yes I hiked two hours.. Noni is now complaining she is sore - Dalhouise has been doing a lot of sleeping - I am OK the bottom my feet feel a little tender but no muscle soreness. My shoes do not do well on the pavement or the hard surfaces in the malls I have concluded. Today we hiked on both the hard pavement of side walks and roads and the cushion of pebble stones along a path.
-- in the rain at that..

What is wrong with me - I just can't get up early and go outside for a walk. Later Dalhouise will force me out and even now as I write this I am thinking it should only be a short walk - I have No motivation to walk -- I know once I start I will probably change my mind and go at it full gusto - but right now I sit in my favorite chair with feet on the foot stool shared with Dalhouise being lazy.

Rain or shine I have said it before Dalhouise forces me outside - the question is for how long and how far.
Today in heavy rain we walked for over 80 minutes. I took a route that last year took over two hours and today well 80 minutes - my speed must had picked up...
My new Arc'teryx sure had it's workout.

Waddling or walking is now my lot in life --
I stopped doing my daily walks only to sauntering around the pond with Dalhouise and eating a lot of Noni's baking - and now the scale shouts justice is served...

- I am so unpleased with my choices and decisions of late - but that is life...

How do you determine the difference between a hike and a walk?
I hiked/ walk around the pond - gulf course meanderings among streams, tributaries, creeks and so many types of trees and brush. Lots of unknown identities of birds fluttering about eagles - gulls flying or perched along my route.
Just me and my dog - walking / hiking at a fast pace in the pouring rain.
Loving life........

They like people? Lol Not sure. It is an interesting observation, though.

I saw lots of fall leaves today: gold, red, brown, yellow, and red/gold. It was cloudy today, and only a slight breeze until I got about 1/2 a mile from home. Then the wind suddenly picked up and the temp dropped about 10 degrees. I just made it inside before it started raining.

Seen over 9 mallard ducks - 1 house sparrow - 2 Eastern Towhee - 1 Hooded Merganser when I took Dalhouise out for his morning walk.
Interesting there is more wildlife in my neighborhood surrounded by highways and housing than in the Provincial Park

You have thoughts on why this is so??????????

Normally I head out the door around ten AM - but today I was up a little earlier and so at nine I started getting dress to go out side when my wife asked if I wanted her to come too. Of course - but hurry up and get dressed as I am almost ready now..
WE take a 45 minute walk around the pond - across the river and after a short jaunt on paved sidewalks stepped gingerly down the embankment into more woods after crossing the river on another bridge.
The SUN is shinning - Oh what a blessing to walk in the sun holding my lovers hand,

Stopped to look at more spawning salmon - looked up and counted twenty Canadian Geese in flight honking loudly.

Good morning everyone,

It is raining here in Oregon but I am going for a hike. Plan to get most of my 10,000 steps on the trails today. Weekends are difficult for me, I plan on eating less and move more.

Hi JD, I agree with you, some of the SP groups are inactive which is lame for an online program.

I have a Fitbit it is a great motivator. My daily goal is to walk 10,000 steps per day. At 4 PM I do a step check, if under 10,000 I get up and walk. I also go to Jazzercise classes 3 times per week. Making ME a priority has been a growth experience this past year.

On my walk today in the light drizzle, I observed several Canadian Geese in flight and a bushy tailed Grey squirrel scurrying up a tree, but didn't see any eagles. Walking around the pond in some sections it smelled of rotten salmon from the last run in September. I was looking for ducks or other pond birds but none were to be found.

Welcome to the team JD...
I am walking again because the dog needs his walk. At camp for the last 6 months we just opened the door and he went out to do his thing. Now that we are back in the city and in the confines of the condo with so many rules and regulations I have to walk him - usually three - four times a day for at least 20 - 30 minutes per time.
he is getting old so the pace is not so fast now - but I will do my own walk to fix that I hope once a day - that is my plan at the moment..

Hi, I just joined this team. It seems pretty active which is great! So many spark teams are dead now.

I recently started walking again for exercise. I became really motivated thursday when I reconnected with an old friend. About 8 miles was walked thursday and then again on friday. We have not walked since cause of scheduled , I think we will end up walking togather maybe 2 or 3 days a week. When on my own I walk the neighborhood behind me now.

Anyone use 'MapMyWalk" app? I downloaded this on one of my 7 mile walks, amazing it helps motivate me!!! Plus I can walk ALMOST anywhere cause it's GPS and will show me where I was so I can also retrace my steps to get home.

Over the weekend I walked a total of just over 3 miles with my dog.

Today I am about to have breakfast and set out for a long walk, then come back and get my dog and take her on a walk.

JD

Walked with a friend today to the big supermarket. I needed to get ice cream for my hubby and of course got some for me. I will have a small bowl about 1 cup/2 servings for a snack.

Marty good job taking your walk hope you get to do it again soon. I am planning to walk to the big supermarket a mile away today. I make this walk at least once a week. I have a nice bargain store right across the street from me but they don't have every thing I need. I need some BQ sauce and I like a certain brand, Kraft, that the bargain store does not have. I tried the kind they do have and hubby said it was okay but I sure did not like it.

Hi I am new to the team but not new to Spark People. I love to walk but had to take a few months off for physical therapy for my knee. I had my last day of PT today and have been pain free after walking a long walk for about 3 weeks now. Today I walked 2.25 miles and am feeling great. I plan to walk at least a mile every day.

That is so good Teejay51 - I understand about the walking outside as I have to deal with rain and snow - and it is so hard to do so when there is a lack of sun - at least I have a dog that makes me get out to walk.
I haven't seen pants size go down but shirts that were very tight are now wearable and I have the love handles again not just a solid barrel around my tummy - tha thas made me happy.

I am now done with the walking challenge at work. It was from late August to today (Oct 14) and I walked 576,666 steps. I'll still walk whenever I can now that the weather is changing and my schedule at work keeps changing too. I lost 2 jeans sizes but I don't know if the scale moved because I haven't checked for awhile.

Summer has left us - cold - it has been very cold in Squamish lately. Cooking while wearing a beanie type and definitely wearing it when outside.
I must confess I have not been out walking - except for yesterday and I miss it. Work is in its final days and so when I move back into the condo I will need to walk Dalhouise so I will get back on a regular routine..rain or sun - cold or hot - well never hot during the fall / winter seasons

looking over the pictures I took of my summer walks brought up some warm fuzziness. I do live in a very beautiful location.
work is just about finished - it might be sooner - must have a meeting Monday with a camp director and the owner. the camp director wants to fire me because I do not - I hate the sound of rap and she constantly plays it on the loud speakers in the dining room area and so harsh words were spoken on Friday with her in front of others... that lies the problem...
Also she keeps telling me she is my boss - NO - I don't see her as my boss - she is supervisor that runs an area of camp - but not my boss and she has told me not to speak to the owner about things she tells me...
Well if that is the case - I am out of a job because I will not work for her as my official boss.

I didn't get to walk yesterday. emoticon

Right after I got home from work, I fed the dogs and cooked my supper, then I went out on the deck and saw we had dark storm clouds brewing up. I checked the radar on the Weather Channel, and saw that we were going to get hit pretty soon, and sure enough we did. We had 1.5 inches of rain in about 30-40 minutes, and the gutters were still running full when it was almost dark, so I stayed inside.

Definitely going to walk today - already got my sneakers on!

I haven't been doing much walking. Maybe it's because of my stupid work schedule they keep changing. I can't believe how soon it is getting dark; it's dark by 7:30!!! Whatever happened to 8 or 9 p.m.? I'm still in this walking challenge at work, and I was hoping this would motivate me to walk, but nope. emoticon

Between rain down pours and a little during i went for my daily walk down the road - it will not be long before the snow of winter come. Trees are loosing leaves fast - there is no fall here - the leaves are turning brown and dropping - I miss the autumn of the east where the trees turn brilliant red - yellows - orange and other colors - if I could afford it I would fly out for a weekend just to emerge myself in that beauty - but the money is spent and saved for the trip that will happen when this camp season is over.
So for now I walk in gloom and that is that.

Hiking or walking I do not care as along as one foot is going in front of the other foot you are walking.
So yesterday afternoon I went walking around a lake with my wife and dog. - I also geo cached and took pictures - the sun was out and it was great .
Just wondering if any other team members are out there doing any walking ???

Plans achieved - great trip over to Vancouver Island
and I was right I did lots and I mean lots of walking.
Walked one day more than five hours up mountains - down along the ocean shore line on the board walks and around down town Victoria's inner harbor -- and that was only one day
Geo caching had me walking the whole road trip - exploring and discovering neat tucked away little trails - had a great road trip

this afternoon I used my break to go for a paddle instead of a walk. lets see if this change of routine will help in breaking the plateau I have been sitting on for a while with that scale.
Today is the last full day of summer camp - this weekend I have plans to go to Victoria BC - I will do lots of walking here - there.....

not safe to walk early mornings or at dusk - so now I must try to get the walk in in the middle of the afternoon right after lunch.
Bears and cougar sightings are more and more common lately and I certainly don't want to meet one when I am out walking.
So now that the sun shines later and goes away earlier thus leaving only the middle of the day for a walk - I will keep trying to maintain my goal of an hour walk every day.

Sometimes I forget how much I do like to just get outside and go for a long slow walk alone - or one with my wife and dog. Yesterday was one of those days when the three of us had a opportunity to walked together along the ocean front and then a second walk along the dike with the gurgling river flowing past us.. It was relaxing and peaceful - so enjoyable. I did not have to rush - hurry so I was not irritated at the pace but soaked up the beauty of the area - the sun's rays, the refreshing gentleness of the breeze and pace of our steps made for a gratifying afternoon/ evening.

That scale - it must be broken !!! I have been walking I would say every day - I have changed my eating habits - yet the scale goes down point by point... but after my big hike when it dropped three pounds then the next day up 2.5 of them - it only gives me percentage of a point --- that is discouraging.....

I was so pleased the day after my day of hiking - the scale had dropped 3 pounds but now two days later it is back up 2.5 of them - that is discouraging -- but not surprised I knew it was to good to be true

I have been walking early in the morning before I begin my 10 hour working shifts and or after work some times both.
Also Noni enjoys bike riding so we ride almost every evening the four mile route - I should be seeing large results - but NO - I eat and I eat way to much

I am back from visiting France for two weeks. Had a great time and some adventures - husband lost wallet in cab, & we were able to contact the company, the driver met us & gave him the wallet back.

I did a lot of walking. I walked 214,853 steps and 100 miles! You can say my feet were sore and so was my ankles from walking on the cobblestones in some areas we were visiting.

Sorry for my absence, between trying to stay stress free by walking or riding, I had a point within the last few weeks where I became fed up with people and actions at my job. I am in a new position for now and look to re engage the groups I am in.

Back in April or May, I posted about the Walking Challenge at work I was in. Well, the 10 weeks is up and I didn't win the grand prize. I did win a $25 gift card. I walked everyday and out of 28 people in the challenge, I came in 8th place. I walked 595,740 steps! I tried to get my 600,000...darn. emoticon I had blisters on the bottom of my feet and had to buy new walking shoes, but it was worth. I'll be on vacation for two weeks starting Friday and I'm planning to do A LOT of walking. emoticon

Hello Team - I have been blogging but that is about all as my seasonal job and low internet connection has been keeping me preoccupied.
I have been too busy to walk and the scale is going up slowly - but this week I have started walking after my shift and the scale is now slowly this in a good way.
I need to walk no matter how tired I am - but that is easier said than done.

I have been away for a little bit. I am sorry but was focused on training on two goals I wanted to accomplish this year. The first was my walk across San Antonio completed on April 27th, 28.15 miles in 6:42:25. Second was the TourdeCure ride completed May 11th, 101.16 miles in 7:38:58. It's with groups like this and the people in them that support, motivate and inspire, that help me set and reach my goals.

I just felt a need to share, today I plan to walk...I walked only one day last week and two days the week before.
I am on day 11 of wearing the bone stimulator on my foot, to help heal the broken bone.
Other than a couple of episodes of burning sensation, I have no idea if its working, but I am still taking the high doses of vitamin d.
I dont go back to the ortho again until June 18....so, I am doing the best I can til then.
He said a little walking wont hurt...so thats all Ive been doing...a little walking.
It has been 4 months since I broke the foot....4 months today in fact.
I never ever dreamed it would take so very long to just begin to heal.
Take care of your bodies friends....

Hello fellow walkers....As some of you may know, if you have seen my posts...in Jan I broke my foot and a low vitamin d level has made healing slower than usual.
I havent walked for health since Jan 8...but this week my doctor says I can slowly begin to reintroduce walking.
He suggested no more than 20 mins, twice a week.
Well, for us who really walk and know that when we say WALK, we dont mean a little stroll around the neighborhood, but really walking....we know that 20 x 2 isnt going to make a big difference in our weight/calorie burn....
but, I am going to start back as he suggested and keep it to a minimum of 20 x 2
so that I dont put too much on my foot too soon
because it still isnt fully healed and I am not really even sure if I should do that much or not.
But for my peace of mind, I am going to try...
I miss the time with my music and my thoughts and I have really needed this stress reliever for such a long time now.
So, I will add an update when the time comes, I am hoping tomorrow or Tuesday...

Morning walk with Teresa and Salado 15 miles by Terry's Garmin. I forgot to start mine at a few spots so only 14.14 explored out past the new bridge on South Side Lions park. Had lunch with Michelle Saz Lawton at Wootz. Big news for the day is 47 lbs gone!!! Missed weigh in last weekend due to holiday and decided to do it today. -4.6 for two weeks and now down to 226.8. For those aware of weight watchers goals I am 0.6 away from 10% goal.

the people who are in this walking program at work, are acting like they never seen a pedometer before. They're busy saying, "I walked 150 steps!" "Well, I walked 175 steps!" It's kinda funny to see how they're acting; they need more excitement in their lives!

I've been walking everyday outside and on treadmill.

Good Morning Team. I'm sitting here at the computer while waiting for 2 new recliners to be delivered. We had first picked out 2 nice leather ones but found out they're too big for the area they'll go into. So we went back to the store and picked 2 other ones that will be delivered today and the other 2 picked up. Mine is an electric one, which will be different, but it's in a more modern style and is in black leather, which is what I wanted. Bob's is in camaflage colors and it's cloth, not leather. Not electric as he'd have a problem getting out of one if we had a power failure ( we tried one for him a few years ago ). Mine isn't as big and I'd be able to get out of it. Can't wait for them to get here. With Bob, he needs a new one about every 2-3 years as he's rough on them.
Hope everyone is having a great day.

It's a cold morning here ( 39 degrees in Florida), so I'm staying inside as much as possible. Did my home exercises instead of going to the fitness center today. Since Bob uses a heated pool at the fitness center, with his bad heart, I don't like him going from one extreme temperature to another. So we stayed home today and will go to the fitness center Friday, when the weather is better.
Getting in my 5 servings of veggies today. Did so yesterday in homemade stew but ended up spending most of the evening in the bathroom. Too much fiber, I think.
Hope everyone has a great Wednesday.

I received the new pedometer from work today. It's a pocket OMRON and so far I have it ready for the challenge for next Monday. The co-workers and I will be challenging each other who will walk the most from Apr 1 - Jun 9. Two highest walkers will win close to $300! Now if Mother Nature behaves I can start going to the bike trail and do my 3 mile hike! Wish me luck! I will keep you posted on how I'm doing if you would like.

Treadmill counts but I am so TIRED of treadmill; I'm ready for fresh air and really walking.

Sorry for not being active the last two weeks. I spent one week sick and stuck at home to tired and bothered to do anything. I've spent this week still recovering and also moving offices across town. I wanted to stop in and say I am back and feeling better. Salado(dog) with friends Terry and Shereen completed a 10 mile walk today and it felt great.

I'm sorry I haven't been posting but here in IL it has been snowing and too cold to walk. Of course today is First day of Spring and it's in the 20's & by Sunday, we are supposed to get more snow. I really miss the walking outdoors and I can only take so much of treadmill. Not many places have indoor track so I'm kinda stuck. I'm also watching my weight go up & up, which is really depressing me.

At work I'm in the Wellness Committee and we have decided to do a walking program. We will be getting new pedometers and will be downloading how many steps we do. Whoever gets the highest in 10 weeks will win $$$ and gift certificates. I am hoping this will motivate me to walk and get moving since my energy level has been really low. Just knowing that there's $$$ at the "end of the tunnel" maybe then I will start losing the weight. I'm close to the weight when I first started at Spark 5 yrs ago. That's depressing to see the wt again.

So after April 1, I will be walking outside, unless Mother Nature has some other dumb plans like dumping more snow on me!

So I have a question. I took my mother to Vancouver yesterday and left her in the doctors offices as I went walking looking for Geocaches. Then later walked around and around the large mall pushing my mother in a wheel chair -
Question - does this all count for walking? I think it should - in the past I would had sat in a chair at the doctors office waiting for my mother to be finished... and the mall well I would had did some walking there - but we did extra yesterday just to show my mother things she had never seen before.

Sorry all, after a week of helping the wife get over her cold I myself am sick and haven't been up to doing much of anything other then trying to rest and clean up what may have caused us to catch whatever it is we got. Hoping to be back very soon.

Another day of lots of walking. I was outside most of the day hiking with my dog and then in the afternoon with my wife and dog.
This makes me so hungry and thus I seemly eat double.
Is this going to cause the scale to go the wrong direction? Or because of the extra calories burnt I need to eat above my daily limited?
I don;t know these things - I have never dieted before....

It is hard to be outside walking and posting on the computer. These last couple of days have been nice outside so I have been out walking and geocaching.
What am I going to do when work is thrown into the pot as well? - I'll find away.

Morning everyone. Salado completed an early morning 3 mile walk and I will be meeting a few friends later in the morning to ride on the green way here in SA.

The rains have ceased - I got out side for 4500 steps this morning so far. I thought it should had been more as I was out for about 2 hours. But I was walking in brush and up and down hills ...

I love the zoo. When i lived in Toronto I would often go there on the weekends with the family. I even had a yearly pass. I think my favorite was the Australian building with all the tropical plants and birds.
I think Vancouver has a small zoo - I have never been there yet - I think this will be the year I go check it out.
