Thanks! The salad is something I made with white beans, edamame, chickpeas, green beans, green and red peppers, snow peas, chicken, cottage cheese (1%), and for dressing I just used olive oil and balsamic.

GOOD JOB!

Watch your cheese intake. Try to keep it to 2oz per day. Increasing your milk/yogurt may help with your low-carb "wooziness" and will keep your calcium up.

How many beans are in that salad you eat? You may want to add a full serving to your day to combat the "low-carb flu". Also, is there sugar in the dressing on that salad?

I can't see your tracker that way. You have to make a sparkpage, make it public and then hit edit sparkpage and check the box to make your nutritional tracker public.

Your fats should fall in line with the Spark guidelines (or even be under since we do so much low fat foods). So as long as you are under or within the range, no worries!

Kierae,
Thanks for looking at my journal - I appreciate your feedback!

Believe me, I am not in the habit of skipping meals! One of the days, I logged my lunch as dinner by mistake and didn't bother to fix it.
The other day was the ice cream day, and it just got too late.

So, I shouldn't be concerned about my carbs, should I be concerned about the fats per day?

Thanks again for your help.

That was one thing I found very unclear in that book. He never talks about NOT eating a lot of fat or too much. You know some of those recipes in that book have a very high fat content. In the beginning I was eating a lot of fat for that reason.

So in other words don't waste the money!

Yeah I am with Pam - basmati is good for white rice. The new book is well the old book plus our hints/tip thread..oh and add an exercise program to it...lol. Glad he acknowledged the need for exercise and that it has interval type training. Wasn't a surprise considering I was already doing WATP, walking, and other aerobic exercises with strength exercises. It frustrated me still in that he did not acknowledge/stress enough that calories DO count with exception in the question/answer section. It seems to me that this is a huge area that needs to be addressed with chronic dieters and lets face it...that is what we all are. emoticon

I only bought 1 pound of kona. The rest was all kauai grown. I did get this one flavored. Caramel Coconut Crunch. OH.My.Goodness. I bought 4 pounds of it!

Kauai Coffee actually has a pretty decent coffee club. It is very affordable. We may join it once we get through the rest of our coffee.

I forgot about sourdough bread. I may have to buy that. So what kind of white rice is good? I have basmati. I have a butt load of brown. Even though I know there is no rice shortage I have been buying two bags every time I go to the store.

Hey so how is the new SB book.

OMG jamaica - yes I am whimpering here....sigh.

One of my favorite coffees is the kona macadamia nut which I just can't find locally anymore unfortunately. I normally drink dark (DARK) roasts but I make the exception for Kona only. I did find a dark roasted Kona but it just doesn't taste the same. Add my love for macadamia nuts, fresh pineapple, portuguese sausage, mangoes....and yes I so want to move to Hawaii. I may have to dig out my Hawaiian cookbook and see how I can beachify it.

And Ms Pam - don't make me break out my 2 piece suit. It ain't a bikini (because I can't traumatize myself or the world like that right now) but it works!

I haven't been able to find anything but "Kona Blend" (read "with 10% real Kona") for ages here. That said, I'm not exactly shopping in the post coffee shops. I don't think we have any of those here. Gawd, I miss the big city.

We stayed about 15 minutes from Kauai Coffee estates and they let you taste for free. The first time we went I tasted so much I ended up in the bathroom for hours.

We tasted there and then went to costco and bought it there. We also go a pound of 100% Kona for $20. So worth it.

The inlaws are going to Jamaica next year and they promised me Blue Moutain!!!

Lomotil = antispasmodic med which definitely works. And I will jello wrassle Pam for the coffee!

Maybe ask for a nutritionist eval for the diet? I agree there is a couple ways you can go - the alternative is to just venture forth on your own and that ends up to be a hit and miss. Which is fine if you have the meds to deal with the aftermath if it revolts on you.

I had a roommate in college who could only eat plain ramen.

The thing is every website says something different. Some say BRAT: Ripe bananas, White Rice, Apple sauce and white toast or saltines.
Others say high fiber low fat diet but not fat free.
Then there is this selective carb diet which states very clearly it is for malnourished people and will put on weight.

I have also read soups are good because they cook for so long. I was thinking about doing a chicken soup with rice or even lentils.

Wine and beer definitely doesn't work and I have to really take it easy on the coffee. Did I tell you I brought back 10lbs of Kauai coffee. LOL!

There is another medication I use to take as I needed. It was an antispasmodic. I am thinking about calling my Dr and asking her to prescribe it. I don't want to call the gastrointestinologist because he is going to want to do some poking and prodding.

So basically a lower fiber/residue type diet although not quite that bad? Hey cooked veggies is better than no veggies. White rice isn't bad if you can get "good" white rice, versus processed...ditto for the bread - go for the sourdough. My girlfriend is on the basically no fiber/residue and omg she is living on ramen. She whimpers and drools at everyone's veggies and salads.

I just don't know what to eat anymore. THere is a specific carb diet for IBS-d but you eat white bread, white rice, cooked veggies and fruit. I would balloon! I miss raw veggies.

Hi Lisa,

So the thing to focus on is to be eating 3 meals and 3 snacks if doing phase 1 (on phase 2 you can cut out a snack) - basically eating every 3-4 hours to get the metabolism stimulated. You need to focus on getting 4 1/2 cups of veggies in. Don't focus on carb numbers - even though we are kinda low carb, we don't have a set number we shoot for like Atkins. This way of eating is more focused on the quality of the carbs we are eating, low fat dairy and lean meats. In the future - no skipping a meal. At least eat a small portion of protein. That way you don't have a rebound (ie find yourself starving later or wake up famished) which has great potential for binging.

Tracker isn't too bad in that you have good calories and considering you technically are "kinda" adapting to SB.

Don't hesitate to ask questions as you need and poke at me again to check when you want me to look.

Kierae,
If you could take a look at my food journal, I would appreciate it. What do I have to do to allow you to see it?

I've been doing the best I can using the food already in the house. I figured I would be better off starting right away instead of waiting to do a grocery run to stock up on SB foods. I'm kind of using up what we have in the house and replacing it with SB friendlier foods.

I'm so glad I found this team - thanks so much!

Yes you don't use the meal plans set up for sparks. You search the database for your foods and if they don't have, you can hand enter your own (including recipes). You can set up favorites and also do food groupings (ie your normal salad is lettuce/tomatoes/cukes/etc) which saves time.

So how do you track when you are on SB do you have to add food not on plan for everyhing? Is there another way to do it?

.25 = 1/4 cup, .125 = 1/8th cup.

Quick question: on the food tracker, is it possible to enter 1/4 cup amounts? I was entering a "food not listed" and tried to set the serving to 1/4 cup and the program would not accept it. So, ultimately I changed it to .5 cup - but that's throwing my totals off a bit.

I'm no math whiz, so perhaps I just need a fraction similar to .5 ... but I don't know what that is! LOL

Don't have to do it all the time but it is good to do it occasionally at least. Most folks find out when they do measure their foods that they are usually taking in much more than they think they are. Kinda good to know if you have hit a plateau.

I found it less bothersome once I set up food groupings. We all tend to eat certain things over and over. My latte in the morning, my yogurt combo, my salad, how I make my tuna fish salad - so I do those kind of things in food groupings. Also hand entering those food brands of things we do use, such as condiments, etc does take time initially but once they are in and saved to favorites - its done. It takes me about 5-10 minutes max in the morning to plan out my meals for the day. At the end of the day, I will go back and adjust/make any changes if I detoured.

I still measure/weigh my foods because portion size is MY issue - pretty soon 4 ounces of meat becomes 6-8 ounces.

I absolutely detest tracking my food. I hate weighing and measuring and trying to figure out which food is the closest substitute to what I have if it's not in the tracker list. It takes up sooo much time and I get fed up really quick. That's why I have had trouble following a plan like WW 'cause I get sick of counting points!! Can anyone relate or give me some advice?

Frances,

The fact that you say you don't think you have the concepts down completely and cheated a bit - I would recommend doing a week and stick to the phase 1 religiously. Doing a week and being mindful of what goes into your mouth (versus that automatic pilot action you do when feeding the kids) should see some weight loss. The max of v8 you can count towards your veggie count is 6-8 ounces = 1/2 cup MAX. So if you did a v8, you would still have 4 cups of veggies to go.

T - your food choices look really good. Just be sure you get 4.5 cups of veggies in every day.

Hi Kierae

I didn't eat what recommended religiously during phase 1. I had my moments when I wanted a chip or the crust of my daughter's bread. To answer your question, no I don't feel like I have grasped the South Beach lifestyle.

I also have a bad habit of putting food in my mouth when I am feeding my oldest daughter (food that I don't count because I have convinced myself that the bites are insignificant).

Please help me!!! Any suggestions that you have will be appreciated and implemented into my program.

So should I redo phase 1?

For veggies what is the max of v8 juice to count towards my veggies?

I choose to be successful

Frances, I am curious on what you meant that your eating was flexible when you did phase 1. Just looking at your tracker, you do have some things you shouldn't be eating. Baked beans have sugar in them unless you made them yourself. Watch your cheese - 1 - 2 ounces max since it can stall your weight out. I also see couple other foods with sugar in them. Are you having any cravings/triggers? Do you feel you got a handle on how this diet works? Most folks lose at least a couple pounds in phase 1 so I am kind of surprised when you said you didn't lose anything. Oh and finally my favorite mantra: eat your 4 1/2 cups of veggies!

I appreciate feedback as well - of course I haven't been tracking the last couple of weeks - will start back tomorrow - enough slacking - time to get back on track!

Yes please give me feedback. I am now on phase 2. I haven't lost any weight on phase 1 because I had days when my eating was flexible at times.

Should I stay on phase 1 until I lose 8-10 lbs or can I go on to phase 2?

I choose to be successful

I'm the same way. I record my Crystal Light and drinks if it has fiber & calories, but I usually don't record zero calorie pop or iced tea.

Feel free to look at my food tracker. I think it would be helpful!

Hell I don't record my zero calorie drinks either and I don't record my crystal light packets unless I use one that has fiber in it (because I need it..lol). I figure I have about a 100 calories padding onto my tracker for these kind of things. I just make sure I do record any oils I do cook with though (unless it is cooking spray).

Suzette - make sure you have nuts, and v8 (if you do the juice). Having a kitchenette rocks since you can easily by a container of egg white/egg beaters, a veggie tray or bag of prewashed lettuce. Eating in a couple meals while still allowing you one meal to eat out is always fun.

And thanks for the feedback. emoticon

I agree with Cheryl.... I don't record my zero beverage drinks. I welcome any advise you offer and I don't wear my feelings on my sleeve so let me have it --- If I didn't think I could handle it I wouldn't post what I ate.... I am down 15#'s but feel I need to tighten up --- basically I have been lazy about cooking this week... I have more than once this week not felt like cooking dinner so I had my sf ice cream and a glass of milk.... Which in turn made me hungry the next day. We are going to the beach this weekend..... will probably eat out one night -- I figure salad and grilled veggies with steamed or grilled seafood. I am considering getting a condo vs a hotel so I will have the kitchenette with a fridge for my celery & hummus, sf ice cream, etc... Any suggestions?

YOUR INPUT IS ALWAYS WELCOME.... PLEASE DON'T STOP DOING WHAT YOU DO FOR US BECAUSE OF 1 PERSON.

Thanks,
Suzette

I invite you to look at my tracker and give me feedback. I've been using it faithfully since starting P1.

One thing I don't record and would like you to tell me whether I should be or not, is coffee (which I drink black) or sometimes I have diet coke, Crystal Light or Diet green tea beverages. Being they are 0 calories, I didn't think it was necessary to record, but I'm not sure if they could adversely affect my loss. Input please? Thanks so much for your help.

The South Beach Diet leaders strongly encourage you to use the nutritional tracker here on Sparks. It probably is one of the best tools available - if it is used. It allows you to see how your food is planned out, how the nutrients total up, and of course if you are meeting your caloric needs. If you are having issues, it allows us to identify areas you can tweak it. It may be the matter of shifting foods (ie eating too many calories at the end of your day versus the beginning), could be too much cheese or nuts, or not meeting the basic requirements of the diet itself.

We ask that if you are on phase 1 to use the tracker daily and ask for feedback since this is the time to learn the basics of the diet. It is also useful during the transitioning to phase 2 (or the modified 1.5). After that it is purely your choice. Some folks like to continue to use the tracker to keep them on track. Others use it periodically or when they suddenly find the scale moving the wrong direction.

If you would like us to check your tracker periodically (or whenever you give us a heads up), you can use this thread here. We aren't the SB cops looking to bust you for eating that cookie (well okay so I am going to give you grief about your veggies emoticon ). We are here to help you on making this way of eating an every day realistic way of living.
