Hey there,

I got so tired of physicsdiet being down that I basically stopped using them and only occasionally check in.

Here are two decent-looking online ones:
myhackerdiet.com

www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/online/hdo
.h
tml

There are also alternatives on your phone or iPod if you have something like that. Check out the links at the Hacker's Diet Spark Team page:

I use FatWatch on my iPhone
www.fatwatchapp.com

and also do my own physicsdiet spreadsheet in Google Docs

Export was fixed. Other functions such as saving profiles (and therefore making your profile public) are down, and not likely to be fixed. The stuff in the tumblr are for this year and all came within a week of the recent downtime caused by a hosting provider server switchover. Same cause as for the forum being down and such... there are some issues with libraries he used that showed up when the servers were switched.

If you check the uservoice site you can see the stuff he's working on. The site is supposed to get recoded in Rails 3 and open sourced. Until that's done I wouldn't expect any of the broken features to work properly.

I was just on PhysicsDiet.com.

I was able to export my stuff and enter new stuff.

The forum there is down and has been down for a while.

Has the owner been contacted? I don't have a tumbler account. I wasn't sure if his tumbler page was accurate as there is no year in the datestamps on the posts. Anyone know anything about that?

Steve

Though I have all my data on paper (and Spark), I'd really like to export what they do have (about a year worth for me) but that function is broken! At least he clearly knows about it so something can be done.

Anyway hopefully he will fix the export and I can either take it to a new solution or at the very least keep electronic backups.

I've had no luck getting my account unlocked, although hope springs eternal, since it's nice having all that history when my weight is calculated.

SYSADMIN: Yes, I've recently been playing a bit with the reports on Spark. Haven't played with it too much yet but there's a lot of good stuff there.

I found a GPL'd set of Perl scripts that interface to MySQL that might be a sort of start if we were looking to throw together our own version of PD. diet-tracker.sourceforge.net/ Not sure if that's in the group links but I'm guessing not. It was linked in a comment from Jeremy Zawodny's blog entry about his HD tracking Excel sheet.

PD seems like it got more data since it came back up... but not very many public profiles yet. Strangely, although my profile is set to public, I don't appear in that list. Definitely things are not quite working properly.

GracefulLife: If you're looking for calories in vs. calories out, have you seen the Spark Report for "Calorie Differential over time"? It's not a moving average, but you can see daily, weekly or monthly averages. The weekly smooths out the noise enough to see trends (at the expense of not catching trends within a week).
My Tools - Reports - Calorie Differential Over Time.

I'm not trying to be faster than you. I'm trying to be better than me.

Thanks. I can at least make this work, which I couldn't with the other. But, it only lets you have a month of history, so it says I weigh more than Physics did.

Oh well, it will balance out over time.

OK, with enough searching in Google cache I finally found it. From PD user jgaudette: myhackerdiet.com/

I haven't even created a login there so I can't speak to its current quality.

OK, well, now I have. I don't like it as well as PD, it's too flashy and not barebones enough. And it doesn't look like it has a place to put in calories or calorie burn per day. The automated ability to figure out your TEE seems like a big-time feature to me. Also not sure if it has the Reports that PD had, but I really, really dig those.

Oh cool, I've never looked at any team links before. Unfortunately, no I don't see the one I'm thinking of. It was supposed to be a direct clone of PD to start with, and the guy said he was committed to adding features. Of course you never really know someone's commitment to doing so.

I'd hope, ideally, that such a project could be run open source, so that there could be a continuing supply of contributors and this thing of the project dying wouldn't be such a problem.

Ugh. Not that, again. It seems to happen periodically. I'm afraid that one of these days it just won't come back.

We've probably got enough programmers between this group and the HITsquad to roll one ourselves, but I really wish we could have one as part of SP. It would simplify things a lot.

Interesting. I'm getting a configuration error:
Configuration Error
Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

Hope it's back up soon. I export my data as CSV, but only once or twice a month.

If you go to PD, you get a 404 page, and the URL says "http://www.webhost4life.com/accountstop.h
tm" so maybe the bill is not paid? We can hope it will come back up but maybe this is a good time to talk about the alternatives? There's been talk on the forum for a while that the site was no longer supported and would go away someday.

-Hacker's Diet site: no community aspect, no calories eaten or burned features. Barebones HD.
-Spreadsheets (including Zawodny's jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archi
ves/00685
1.html
): no community aspects, but whatever features you like, to the extent of your ability to drive Excel. Also OpenOffice spreadsheets jon.thysell.us/software/hacke
rsdiet/

- diettracker.appspot.com/ also pretty barebones
-iPhone/iPod Touch stuff: I'm not too familiar with it, actually.

I know someone was attempting to code a direct replacement so he could add the features that people have been requesting for ages, but so far I can't find any forum posts of his in google's cache to find the URL. Anyone?
