I'm new and was going through the past posts when I found this one. I to have foot pain at times when using my gazelle. I have found that moving my feet on the peddles helps. I have worn houseshoes while gazelling but it's not my favorite, I tend to wear good tennis shoes with deep tread to help keep my feet from sliding forward on the peddles(doesn't always help though).

I read earlier in this post someone asking about planter facitis and using a gazelle. I'm probably to late for that person but here's my tip for that....as I do have it in both feet. When I'm using my gazelle and my PF flares I get off and use the back bar to stretch my foot by stepping down on the bar right across the arch and ball of my foot....I won't lie this will hurt like the dickens if you hit the right spot....but afterwards I've found I can go another mile or two on the gazelle without my foot killing me.

I have purchase some fake opened toe sandle type crocs fom Wal Mart for $5.00 and they are working great. My mother lives in AZ and told me about them. I actually bought 7 pair. They are actually better on my feet for shopping cuz I can't stand to wear tennis accetp for walking.

(I'm bringing this topic back up as I've referred quite a few other new Gazellers here who have mentioned foot pain. Maybe they can read back through the posts and find some helpful suggestions).

I think I'm going to make a pattern for my sheep's heads. Then I can make them for anyone who wants to attach some like mine to their slippers. Darn if I can remember where they came from in the first place, but I've never seen them again. I'm thinking one of my grown kids gave them to me after they'd left home - I can just picture any of them seeing them and commenting "these are just so much my mom". I'm not sure if that's a good thing.

Hi All! I don't have any problems with pain on my Gazelle. I think I am lucky because I bought it new from the store. The tape that came with it gets you going into it slowly. I didn't dare do what Sharon Money Twombly (she was the trainer on my beginner tape that came with it.)did for about my first two weeks. She would talk about rocking your feet as you glide. I always wear my running shoes while I glide. I notice that some people on here just glide for a while and get off. I actually use the workout dvd's for a complete workout. I feel if I did it while watching a tv show or something I wouldn't really be burning as many calories. I like changing the positions and low gliding and the interval training I get. I believe in what Tony says too about never going to pain. If I ever would hurt I would stop and that is not the name of the game. Good luck folks!

All this time I didn't know Tribbles were real (so to speak) things. There was a reference to them so I Googled Tribbles, and was surprised at what I read!

I would imagine that using the gazelle would burn more calories than walking because you are using your arms too.

If you weigh more than 150 pounds then you'd want to add more calories. A lot of people use 1.5 times the calories shown. If you are uncomfortable with using the gazelle's counter, you can just use the generic calorie count on SP.

So you say that those totalys are correct from what I get.
And there for some one who is 150 pounds. SO what do you do if your NOT 150.

And way when you go to SP and look up walking it says way less then that.

I relise that I'm going real fast so I wanted to under stand it.
I don't wnt to be cheating on my calorie listing area on SP.
I was told that if you can walk one mile in 10 minutes you have burned 100 calories.

That's probably close to correct. Fitness Quest says the machine is calibrated for someone who weighs 150 pounds.

I have a BIG ? for any one who can answer it or wants to.

According to my gazelle I walked 1.63 miles in 20 minutes it also said that I burned 197.9 calories.
Is the calorie area correct? for the miles I walked?
Or do I need to do some thing.

Please let me know.

When you are using your gazelle are you just keeping your feet flat or are you using a walking motion as if you were walking on the ground outside? I have had my gazelle for years and use it everyday and my feet don't hurt.

I noticed mine doesn't squeak so bad the faster I go... I push to 4 mph & it's fine... when I slow to 3 it starts squeaking again! Go figure!

Anyway on the feet thing... I make sure I have some solid *no slip shoes... my nursing clogs...

After awhile when my feet get numb I stand on my toes & do a minute on the toes...

& then back on flat feet. They feel a lot better after that...

I occasionally do a minute on my heels...
Then back to flat...

I've worked my way up from 20 minutes a day to 45...

I do hand weights & yoga stretches on alternate days for 45 minutes... & finish those days up with 30 minutes on the Gazelle.

On Sundays... I walk for 45 minutes... stair climb for 15 minutes & gazelle for 15 minutes.

So far I've lost 38 pounds & over 105 over all inches!!! I'll take inches over pounds any day!!!

Good luck to y'all in your good health/weight loss journey! Tunia

Suz-yes it is opened up all the way...going to try tightening up all the screws, just got to find a screwdriver that fits it...I didn't put it together-its used. Wasn't too bed this a.m. I spent most of the time sideways and by doing it that way-it doesn't squeak or as much.

thanks for the suggestions!
Kim

Kim - do you have it opened up all the way? Sometimes mine seems to work its way together a little, and then it makes a noise, just enough to alert me to the fact I need to full open it up again.

I have some blue cushy slippers that work best, 4 bucks at KMart. KateN09 has some just like them in magenta - you can go to her page, in her gallery and take a peek. Socks don't seem to make much difference, sometimes I wear them, sometimes not. But the less rigid the better, don't need a bunch of support, it seems.

I'm glad to know these things, cause I too have had numbness in my feet using the Gazelle. Thanks for the helpful hints.

You can help the numbness by making sure to change you stance to one that requires you to lift your heels with each stride. I do this by leaning pretty far forward and mimicing almost a running action with the foot. Each stride brings the heel up off the footrest and then back down again. I find this helps a lot with the numbness (my feet never get numb anymore).

Ellipticals will make your foot go numb too because your keeping your feet flat with little movement. I have been wearing crocs and they help alot. I wish I had some fuzzy critters for my feet but I don't, LOL.

When I first started using the Gazelle I noticed foot and ankle pain. I ended up wearing my Crocs (no socks) while I was working out. There was a lot of freedom for my foot to "Breathe" but it still had the good arch support in it.

So, I have been doing some experimenting while I work out. I also read the Gazelle User's Manual (what a concept, LOL) and followed the advice on there. I actually had CONSIDERABLY less discomfort when I did the following things (many others have already said them, I'm just gonna sum 'em all up)

Wear flexible yet supportive footwear (I have been wearing my older running shoes as opposed to my newer shoes, and wearing them a little looser so that my foot can move)

Make sure the Gazelle is level. It shouldn't wobble AT ALL once you set it up where you are going to work out. I use it on a carpeted surface, so I have to nudge it around a couple of times before it won't wobble.

Let your feet move naturally, if they lift up in front a little bit or in back, it's ok. It feels somewhat awkward at first, but you get used to it after one or two workouts. I also found that when I do that, I can go much faster on the Gazelle. (That tidbit was right out of the user's manual)

And of course, as MANY others have said, vary your stance and take pressure off of your different muscles.

Ah, I'm glad I had time to research all this
Good luck everyone!

I've found that if I tie my shoes too tight, the foot pain gets worse, so follow the advise about the flexible shoes.

Don't let this thread scare you off. One thing to remember - there are a lot of Gazelle users out there and there are only a fraction of them talking about foot pain, so I'm guessing there are a lot of people who use the machine with no problems at all.

Yes, someone asked Fitness Quest about the foot pain and they disavow any knowledge of anyone having a problem. My feet don't hurt, but will go numb if I wear really stiff shoes. Flexible shoes (or slippers, lol) allow me to make sure I am flexing my feet with each stride. That has taken care of the numbness for me. I also do some of my workout leaning forward and some of it leaning back. This uses different muscles and that might help with numbness too.

I'm not sure about the plantar faceitis and how that would be affected by the gazelle.

I had to join this team to ask a question. I don't own a Gazelle but am very interested in getting one. Y'all are worrying me about the foot pain. I have off and on bouts of plantar fasciitis, which is on right now, and it makes walking and standing very painful. So now I'm wondering if I should even get a Gazelle or not. I need to exercise but there are so many things I can't do because of the foot pain. I'm ordering a pair of CrocsRX later this week, are Crocs okay to be using on the Gazelle? (And yes, these have a strap across the heel.) Thanks!

Unfortunately, I don't find it hard to believe, lol. The first line of defense for any customer support person is to always state they've never heard of such a thing before.

Since so many of us have had pain and/or tingling, I'd say it's not something physically wrong with one of us (They must have missed that part of your email).

Personally, I find that wearing a stiff shoe makes it worse and a flexible shoe makes it better.

Varying the stance (leaning forward, leaning backwards, up on the toes, etc) works well. I find a fast "running" stride where I'm leaning slightly forward and each stride brings my heels up off the footrest works best of all for me and I can go for long periods of time without any pain at all.

OK Ladies, got my answer e-mail from Fitness Quest... here it goes, brace yourselves!

"Good Morning,

I have honestly never heard of this situation. I would first consult a physician, as this could cause a more serious problem than I am able to diagnose. I have no suggestions to give you, other than wearing a solid support Gym Shoe.

Thank you,

Welcome Sara

You'll definitely have to let us know if fitness quest gets back to you on the foot pain thing. It really does help to vary your stance as you work out. Leaning forward or backward makes the foot work differently. If you do one of Tony Little's workouts, you'll note he changes things up frequently.

OK, I just sent a message over to fitness quest that went like this:

Hi there....

I am on an online forum of Gazelle users, and everyone loves their Gazelles. However, almost every one of us is complaining of foot pain and/or foot cramps while using the machine. Some of the ladies have even gone as far as saying they only workout on the Gazelle in their furry bed time slippers (and yes, they have pictures to prove it). Is there something in our form that is causing us this pain and cramping, and if so, what can we do to improve our Gazelle experience?

Sincerely,
Sara Kil

SO I will let you know as soon as I get a response!

Has anyone tried contacting Mr. Little or the manufacturers of the thing about this foot pain stuff? I mean, seriously, there is an entire group of us here complaining about it and comparing slippers, for cryin' out loud! Maybe I'll get on that.

So...yeah. I TRIED Gazelling in my slippers, and it did NOT work out! Maybe you have to have slippers with backs on them? Mine don't have backs, just slip-ons, and I nearly killed myself! I could feel my feet slipping out, and I had this vision of falling off and knocking myself out on the onboard computer...

And slippers are inexpensive to replace! We were on our monthly trip to Walmart - we don't actually go just for Walmart, but since the nearest one is over 200 miles away, and we happened to be in that town, we of course we to WallyWorld - and I saw slippers, nice cushy ones, are on clearance for four bucks. If you don't have good slippers to glide in, and have a Walmart nearby, go pick up a pair!
