Glad all went well on your run Rich - my new shoes started acting up about mile 7 of my long run... sore toes!

Kimmie - envying you the good weather.

Carol I think the key is a gradual build up and days with very short distance like 1-2 miles.

Rich - I'm majorly impressed. I cannot run more than 2 days straight without getting an injury! I really need the recovery day to stay healthy... it's probably an age-thing. Confess I'm envious.

Did add back my 4th day a week of running - I had dropped it for Jan/Feb and most of March to make sure I got over all the little niggling aches. They subsided (not gone, but better) so I'm starting the build for the 1/2 marathon in May and the full in September. Want to get beyond the 1/2 distance before the race - it really seems to help mentally if I've gone further than the race distance.

Streak Update (now if I could just streak the 'days in range'...)
Days Tracked Food: 31
Days ate in range: 9 (okay, I'm really squeaky close on a bunch of other days...)
(days grossly over range: 1

Ran with the group last night in the spitting snow and slush... well, no one my pace was there, so I sort of ran the same route while other people were out on it! DS was supposed to meet me for dinner, but cancelled at the very last minute (I was just done with the run...) Oh well, at least I got the run done, and it wasn't actually THAT bad, but I'd have opted for the treadmill without the incentive of dinner after.

Rich - I like the roundness of the numbers in your streak!

Having a hard time getting the calories back down into range after a semi-indulgent weekend. And we are hosting Easter next weekend - another big feed for the family.

Tried the yoga class again last night. It's a bit different (no downward dog?) but at least there were more people there and I started to chat with another runner - may go back on a Tuesday to see if I can line her up as a potential running partner if she's not too fast.

Kimmie - isn't it nice to get unexpected time off? Feels like a gift.

Today is the first nice day we have had in awhile! Luckily, I was called for jury duty, expected to be available for 1:30 session, and then told to check back tomorrow. SO I have the afternoon off! After I bring the teenie and her friends to lunch I am going for a run!

Felt really good to get out for a run yesterday- no TM forcing the pace, not too cold - first run in a week! First time I've taken that many days off running in a long, long time. Feeling good now, but need to focus and start the build-up to the 1/2 in May

Made it safely back from out snowy weekend. Stopped at a huge mall in Syracuse on the way back - it actually has a multi-storey indoor rope course... Amazing. Planning to get back in the groove today - haven't run in a week and am feeling twitchy.

DH seems to be back to normal which is a relief.

Kimmie - what a great weekend! Congrats to your daughter.

Rich - the streak is going strong!

Glenda - your cross-fit stuff continues to amaze me... I'd be on the floor crying.

Helo all- new week today- and it's only a 4 day week and then I have 4 days off!! WOO HOO.

I'm so sick of work. I can't wait until I get an actual holiday. That won't be until the end of May though. I'm counting down the days!

I did my crossfit workout I did alright. I finished my 150 wall balls in about 9:35, and then I have just under 2.5 mins to try to to 90 double unders, I did 21. I'm really bad at those, so I guess I should work at them for another year. A lot of people in my gym got to muscle ups and it was really cool to watch. Only 2 more workouts to go!

Rich- that sounds like a good run!

Kimmie- a suprise party sounds great! Glad you had a good time.

Off to work have a good day all.

Glenda

Hmm...if I could be doing anything else right now, I'd be crossfitting.

My daughter and I did a 5K yesterday and she got 5 out of 20 in her age group :)
Last night the hubs threw me a surprise cocktail party. We had so much fun and my parents even came, which is awesome because they live a little far, and my Dad doesn't always travel well.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. After a full cardiac workup they sent him home with a stomach soother, he took a nap and while not quite 100 percent he went back to work on Friday so I went on m y long planned weekend with my SIL. Normally we run around the lakes but we arrived to six inches of snow, got the car stuck, dug it out again, and are planing to slog our way around one lake if the snow hasnt drifted too much. Hard to believe its spring!

Missed my run last night... had decided to blow off the group because it was so windy and run the TM at home, but when I got there DH was sick - DH is NEVER SICK.... ended up going to urgent care, then to ER, and now he's getting a full cardiac workup... Everything preliminary is looking OK, but we have to go through all the process. He's super grumpy right now and complaining that they are treating/looking for the wrong thing - it's his stomach that hurts! My chest hurts just thinking about heart stuff.... With luck they'll send him home later today.

Can we all say "stress"???

Rich - isn't it amazing how your perspective changes when you run longer? I remember thinking my 1/2 marathon last year was "only 13" because I'd done a couple of 15-16 milers...

Glenda - those crossfit workouts are way beyond me.... I think I'm pretty fit, but when I read about that stuff it just blows me away.

Kimmie - glad your recovery is coming along well.

My legs are less sore, thanks! Ran 5K last night and my legs were leaden but I had an 11:00 pace average, so not too bad! Couple more days and I will be good to go!

hi guys,

Rich- that is quite the streak. Impressive. And congrats on the ultra. You are hard core!!

Carol- You still tracking calories? I was doing good for awhile, but I've not been for about 4 or 5 days and I've eating so much junk in that time. Boo. Better track again.

Kimmie= congrats on the race. your legs better now?

So my 3rd crossfit open workout was posted last night. I will do it on friday night, it's crazy!! 150 wall balls (a squat and throw medicine ball up 9 feet) then 90 double unders (jump rope the rope spins round twice in one bounce) and then 30 muscle ups. In 12 mins. I have never done a muscle up- google if you want to see what it is, it's super hard! And i'm really bad at double unders so my goal is to finish the double unders. Fingers crossed!

I have a 15k race on Sunday it seems so short.

More winter weather. Ran TM yesterday - at least I did a progressive run, topping out faster than I usually do for an easy run.

Rich - after an ultra, I expect it's OK to break the running streak...

Cold and snowy and windy - yes, I could have gone outside this weekend, and no, I did not. Feeling like a wimp, but having a few days of nice weather took away all my cold-weather mojo!

Kimmie - what a bummer that they didn't at least meet you at the finish! A two-mile walk probably will make you a lot less sore today.... but what a pain. Glad you were happy with your time and that the rain held off!

Family birthday party today - ate an entire day's calories in 2 hours, and got fussed at for not eating everything on my plate.... It's a miracle I'm not as big as a hot air balloon!

Rock n Roll USA was fun, the rain they forecasted never came. I was on track for a PR until mile 6ish, when the hills started. They never seemed to stop lol. I finished in 2:36:28 which I am pretty happy with.I have all year to PR so I am not at all worried about that. I was bummed that my family never showed up at the Finish. They went to mile 11 about 5 minutes too late and just gave up and went back to the hotel. I didn't have money for the Metro, so I had to walk back 2 miles. My legs are unthrilled lol

Went for fitness assessment at a nearby gym today. Good news is I am already fit. Have good stride and no obvious mechanical or balance issues and know what I need to work on. Think the trainer wondered why I was there, to be honest. It was part of a deal with some half price yoga classes, so I thought I'd just see what a trainer would see about my current status. This guy also coaches runners so that was cool.

Rich, whoot, whoot! Awesome on t he ultra!

Wimped to the treadmill last night instead of braving the 20+ mph winds and sub-freezing temps. Did run 3.5. Would have been a miserable run outdoors, even with the evening staying lighter!

Rich - gotta love DOMS - means you did something new! My calfs are still aching from all the jumping in the Sh'Bam class I tried. Wish it had only been a "bit of walking" - I just want to stay in control instead of feeling totally defeated next marathon. ie - I want the walking to be planned, not "oh help, I can't run another step..."

Ack - back to snow this morning! Intermittent, but a cold front came through and after 50-60 degrees this weekend sub-freezing feels colder than ever.

Glenda - I know what you mean about decluttering! It is hard. I'm still going through our basement.... we've stored stuff down there for over 15 years "because it's still good and we might want it some day..." Who knew we owned a punch bowl and 40 cups! I'm finding flylady.com has helped with guidelines for papers, etc.

Rich - I'm just hoping heat training will prevent the type of crash I had last year. I finished but I walked a large portion of the second half even though I slowed down and hydrated. Glad you caught a break in the weather.

Hey all

THe cool change has hit. Yeah

So Carol - Training in some heat is worth while. In the end though on event day you just tend to tough it out. I have done a 50k and Marathon in the heat last month and it was all Ok as long as fluids were kept up.

Glenda - I know that feeling - boxes and boxes of papers and crap to go through.

Carol- I seem to change my goal often....depending on what my weight actually is. Plus since I started gaining so much muscle, I had to have my weight goal actually be a bit higher and I'm working on body fat % goals instead. So, I focus more on inches than scale weight. It's gradually been going down- but it's so much slower than a scale!!

I ended up staying home again- just feeling generally low. I started feeling better though by about 11am, so I decided to go through my old school papers, and my shoes/coats and a few other things and now have several piles on the floor of stuff to be thrown out, or given away. Feels good to get some of that stuff done.
My apartment has gradually become piles of papers, books, and other random things that I've collected over the past 4 years or so while in school and now had the brain time to think about doing anythign about it. It's been bugging me so much-I wanted to put it away, and throw out, but I was paralyzed by fears, I may need that, or if I do that, then I have to do this. etc etc. Part of my whole anxiety problem. Today though, finally felt like doing a few specific things. There is much more to do, but maybe this will be a small step in the right direction.

Glenda

Hmm...if I could be doing anything else right now, I'd be crossfitting.

Vastly encouraged as have been eating better and am now officially in a size smaller pants. Does anyone else find themselves adjusting their weight goal downwards when they get close to it? I'm 2 pounds from my "initial" goal for the [last 3] years, and am looking at chasing at least 5 more pounds to get to my "original" goal....

Glenda - hope you feel better soon! No fun being sick...

Rich - I agree heat is harder than cold... I'm worried 'cause my fall marathon might be really hot. Planning to make sure I train in the heat in July/August so it won't throw me for a loop.

Kimmie - rest the shoulder... taper well and run strong.

Glenda I am super jealous of your 7C right now.

We have had 9 days in a row of over 30c with no nightime cool changes very little wind so the air has been hot and stagnant. Kind of relentless.

Cant wait for the cool change to come.

Hello
I stayed home from work today, I was feeling yucky. Slept in until 10:30, I'm feeling a bit better, but I still have a headache and am really hot. Boo! I think I'm fighting a bug- hopefully I can fight it before it really makes me sick.

Carol- thanks- those pullups are hard to do, and It's taken me several months to get them. You're doign great on tracking lately. Keep it up.

Rich- I wish it was hot here. We still have snow!! and LOTS OF it. Thankfully it's about -7-0 C which is better and not as bad as it has been.

Well, I'm going to put my head down again and maybe try eat something. Have a good day.

Got out for a nice run on Saturday - 8.25. My hip did not like the first hill, so I ran around on the flat for about 5 miles before going back down instead of doing my planned hilly route. Chilly and sunny, it was a great day to run and I felt really good about it.

Glenda - if you can kip 35 pull-ups, I'm IMPRESSED!

Rich - I'm actually going to miss my night runs now that the time has changed. Will be nice not to have to bring all my blinky lights, but there is something special about running through the dark.

Kimmie - 6 days! Enjoy the anticipation

Hello
I have to work this weekend- sucky because the time jumped ahead an hour and I had to get up extra early. I hope it's not busy today.

I didn't get to read too much.

Carol- glad you guys didn't get that storm. Keep up the good food tracking!

Rich- welcome to crossfit. Have you heard much about the "open" anyone at your gym do it? I did it on thursday. There is a new workout every week for 5 weeks. for points. I was a little disappointed with my numbers, but fairly satisfied. Oh and also- keep with those banded pullups. Before no time You'll be kipping them for 100 and you'll laugh!! So far I can kip about 35, broken up into sets of course.

Off to work.

Glenda

Hmm...if I could be doing anything else right now, I'd be crossfitting.

Quiet day yesterday - took one car to be worked on, and scheduled appointment for the other one on Monday. Car maintenance is ridiculously expensive!!!!! I hate taking care of multiple cars - seems like something is always going wrong.

Strength and stretching on the schedule today - and it looks like it'll actually be about 40 degrees for my long run tomorrow - heading outside and through the park (hills) and we'll see how the hip holds up.

Rich - wow, that's quite a running streak you have going! And I'm grousing about needing to add my 4th run of the week back into the mix in a couple of weeks. By the end of March I'll be ramping the mileage back up after the 'recovery' months of January/February. I need to - with my latest shoe purchase I'm 380 miles in debt!

Ran with Fleet Feet last night - they had the Adidas rep there giving people shoes to try on the run - they have a new shoe, the Boost, which is supposed to have a lot more rebound for you each stride. They fit really different, more like a structured glove. I really only noticed a difference when I sprinted at the end of the run, but I bought a pair because I need a second pair to swap out with my long-run shoes. Meant to wait another month, but they had a discount and a free shirt last night and I can't resist freebies!

With the new purchase I'm now at about $500 for the year in shoes/clothes/race fees. At a mile per $, I'm in debt about 390 miles... When marathon training kicks in it should pay back pretty quickly (I hope!)

Rich - "ego-free" training - I like that! Too bad there's no way to do an assisted burpee though...

Carol - Well I am a bit sore. The Triceps are making their prescence felt today. but on the pull ups - you do it with a resistance band thingy so they are assisted. The trainer is really good. He just works with you at whatever level you are at without judgement at all. Really good.

His sign out the front says - ego free training!

Warmer today so looking forward to my run after work - just think - next week it will be light out for the run and I won't need all my blinking lights (they laugh at me, but I'm NOT going to get hit by a car)

Glenda - the storm is missing us! We are sitting here in Buffalo smirking at the folks along the coast getting more snow than they can handle...

Rich - holy carp!!! I would not be walking/moving after a workout like that - and I can't even do 1 pull-up... I'm with Kimmie - you are a hero to even try this!

Crossfit number 2 today.

It was hard work - first we did 100 Squats, 100 Pullups, 100 situps and 100 pushups. 30 min time cap. Then we did this other killer 14 minute thing where we had to do this bicept curl and shoulder press and every min stop and do 5 burpees

Very tired arms.

Yeah 2 days paleo so far. Here's for day 3!

Carol- the hill running could have for sure hurt your hip. Are you guys getting the snow storm that's going through??

Rich- how was the next crossfit day?

Kimmie- 40th bday run sounds great!

Well, off to make food for work tonight. Have a great day.

Actually ran outside yesterday with one of the run-club girls... cold but not much wind so tolerable. Hip held up pretty well, and she was kind enough to slow down to run with me. Figure it's better to run outside when I can - think doing a lot of hills right after a full month of treadmill is probably what set the hip off in the first place. Supposed to be nice on Saturday so will try for a longer run.

Glenda - I'm sure I could never do Paleo... so kudos to you for giving it such a good try! Good luck.

Rich - you'll see the upper body/core work pay off in the running very quickly. I found it helped alot with holding good form and having a little extra on long runs.

Kimmie - happy 40th coming up! In 2 weeks the cold will be gone (both yours and the climates...) and you'll have a great time.

Thanks to all, I have come down with a yucky cold, which definitely didn't help with my race yesterday (or my attitude about it lol)
I can't wait for RnR DC in less than 2 weeks, bad time or not, it will be a blast!

Monday and I work later- so am enjoying my day lazing around the house and trying to organize tax papers, work stuff etc. Soon I'm off to the gym.

Carol- glad your hip held out for the race. And nice of your to buy your peeps some "medals" I'm sure they appreciated it.

Kimmie- your race sounds hard- you did it, so that's awesome! good luck on the ones coming up.

Rich- 1 day a week to build muscle sounds good. I was amazed actually how weak my upper body was from all the running I did. It's taken me a long time to start to get strength up there. 100k- wow! that's going to be one LONG run!

I already cheated on my attempt for 30 days of paleo. So I guess I start over. I've done 1 day, I'm on day 2. Sugar sucks!

Back at it on Monday morning... SIL called to say how sore she was... it's sunny and cold. I brought both indoor and outdoor stuff - we'll see if any of the other run clubbers want to go outside. Hip still sore, but not 'painful' the way it was, so things are looking up.

Kimmie - 40th birthday or 40th 1/2 marathon? Either way, sounds like you have fun times coming up.

Ran the 8K Shamrock run yesterday with my SIL and niece. SIL hadn't run in ages, but was willing to give it a try. Niece was been doing run/walk training, but not as much as before her dog running companion passed away - and not much due to the weather. So we started out with our matching irish hats. With my hip issue I planned to run with them and keep myself from straining.

That lasted about 1/2 a mile... They were going so slow I just couldn't get into a rhythm, so I finally told them that I'd either have to walk or run faster as my hip couldn't take that pace. I got to the 1 mile marker and it had taken 13.5 minutes... even running close to my normal pace after I left them. Fortunately the hip loosened up and I was soon running at my long run pace (not my usual racing pace for this distance, but at least comfortable). The hip felt tender, but not really painful, so I kept at it.

I had time after the finish before they came in to buy them green bead necklaces with big shamrocks as their "race medals". I was proud of them for going the whole way - there was a 5K turnoff they could have opted for. I'm mostly relieved that the hip is recovering!

Glenda - hope the tiredness goes away quick and you feel energetic and ready to take on the world again!

Kimmie - congrats on finishing under adverse circumstances! Those are the races that make us appreciate it when everything comes together perfectly.

Rich - 100k! I'm impressed. Glad you are figuring out a way to get in some cross-training. Even with your great bio-mechanics, you need to do SOMETHING other than run - and this sounds like a good approach.

SOunds like my kind of course Kimmie lol

Glenda - some running friends have got into cross fit and they organised there trainer to run a special session for runners as an intro. I am planning to go once a week at this stage. Normally I avoid strength work and just run. I know I should not do this but I do so now I am thinking this may be a way to get some strength in without the whole gym experience.

I never feel comfortable at the gym. I always feel self conscious and inadequate. I guess its all part of my low self esteem issues :)

On a running note looks like I am going to be doing a 100k sooner than I thought. Like in April. My running friends tell me I will be up to it. So I am going to give it a go. I will be part of a team of 4 running as part of a fundraising event.

Have an awesome day everyone.

Today's half was UGLY
It was cold and windy, and the course was super hilly! One downhill was so steep, I jarred my knee (it has already stopped aching though, hooray!) so the last 5 miles were hideous! Took over 2:50 to finish!

Kimmie- Nice job. Sound like a fun race weekend.

Rich- you tried crossfit?? Are you going to go back? or were you just going to see what the fuss was all about?

I'm up just eating breakfast and will head to the gym soon. I'm tired today though as I was at my grandparents 25th wedding anniversary last night and was up later than usual.

I have the crossfit games, open starting this week. eep. The first workout is announced on wednesday then I will do it on thursday. Hopefully that goes well and my foot is okay.

Today's fun run went well, I ran with a friend and the hubs ran with a friend. Usually the hubs beats me at the end, but this time he finished 3 minutes behind me! I finished a 10:18 average pace, 2.13 miles in 21:56ish. Yay! Tomorrow's Half should be fun, I have a few friends to meet up with, and will hopefully see on the course.

2 mile fun run today, to benefit our destroyed beaches. Fun start to a race weekend! Tomorrow is a hilly Half Marathon, I am running with a friend who might need to take breaks. Should be a fun run, I love running with her, and she is usually faster than me, so it will be nice to be the one doing the encouraging for a change!

I am excited for March! I have 2 Half Marathons and a bunch of 5Ks, finally getting a groove back on! I am not really ready for the Halfs, so I am sure there will be no PRs this early in the year, but it will feel amazing to get back out there!

Hello

I"m glad you put the stop sign there, I would have posted in february!! My brain has felt so tired and foggy lately. I'm wondering if it's all the cheating I've been doing! Possibly. I also felt really lethargic at the gym when I went tuesday. I didn't go wednesday or thursday because I was feeling so tired. I also was having a sore foot from work and all the standing/running around. Today, will probably be just as tiriing and I ate stupid last night, but I have to make the gym.

Carol- good luck on your run tomorrow. Taking it slow is so hard hey? Both of us with annoying injuries yet still doing our thing. We'd probably make bad patients!

I also wanted to tell you I am starting a challenge....I am on another board in here for Paleo eating....I've read a bunch of books lately and have gradually been trying to change the way I eat. I like it and the way it makes me feel- but I want to really focus and eat well to clean up my stomach and my acne and feel better at the gym. So the challenge is a 30 day "squeeky clean" paleo diet. That means, grain free, gluten free, dairy free, legume free. So meats, veggies, some fruit and nuts, and good fats are what I eat. It also means no sugar for 30 days besides fruit, which means no alcohol either. I wanted to tell you so that you can help keep me accountable. I don't necessarily plan to record everything I eat, but I'll try, and I'll probably try to blog regularly about how I feel. Maybe when I have a craving I'll blog. I'll see. Or I may just come here and complain to you!!

Anyways- Hope you have a good day. And good luck again on the Run Carol!

Glenda

Welcome to March!

I'm glad it's Friday! Things are looking up on the fitness front, and I have an 8K race tomorrow. Think I'll run with my niece and take it slow and easy.... the hip is still twinging, but definitely improving.
