I believe that there is an SP article which gives advice on how to stick with your diet when eating out. I'm not a picky eater, but I'm usually far too tempted to turn down the less than ideal menu options.
I read that one SP member would ask for a take home box right when she got her food. she would immediately pud half of her plate in there so she wouldn't be tempted to eat more than a portion.
You could also ask about more healthful substitutions for sides. A baked potato with a little salt/butter is much better than fries. Steamed veggies would be even better.
Try and opt for low cal/no cal drinks like diet soda, unsweetened iced tea, or water and avoid alcohol.
Eat as slowly as possible so that you can stop before you over eat. Try not to go when you're starving, but if you have to see if you can fill up with something small like a side salad before your main dish comes.
