Hey, I learned this little trick from someone...if you eat something like a handful of nuts or one of those little containers of yogurt a half hour before you go out to eat (or get to the resturant), by the time you're there you won't really want to eat much more. Hope that helps a little.
I cannot agree with Aurical more. The best stratagy is to plan ahead and simply order what ever it is that feels right to you and ask for a take home box and put half of it away before you even put mouth to fork. In doing this you may very well help your friends to develop better eating habits also.

I believe that there is an SP article which gives advice on how to stick with your diet when eating out. I'm not a picky eater, but I'm usually far too tempted to turn down the less than ideal menu options.
I read that one SP member would ask for a take home box right when she got her food. she would immediately pud half of her plate in there so she wouldn't be tempted to eat more than a portion.
You could also ask about more healthful substitutions for sides. A baked potato with a little salt/butter is much better than fries. Steamed veggies would be even better.
Try and opt for low cal/no cal drinks like diet soda, unsweetened iced tea, or water and avoid alcohol.
Eat as slowly as possible so that you can stop before you over eat. Try not to go when you're starving, but if you have to see if you can fill up with something small like a side salad before your main dish comes.

I am also a very picky person, so I would say if you have to go out to eat & you order someting not so good for you only eat half & either share with somebody or take the rest home. How often do you eat out ? If its everyday than you should try to watch what yuor eating but if its only once or twice a week don't be so hard on yourself. I have 3 kids so we don't go out to eat so much but used to order pizza all the time on those nights I didn't fell like cooking & now I only order out maybe once a month & what a difference in the way I feel & also saved alot of money. But I understand having friends & wanting to hang out so just do your best when your ready to stop eating unhealthy you will do it. I had the same problem with pizza & I finally was ready to start being healthier & now I eat out so much less

how do you all deal with the pressure of eating out with friends? it seems like i do so well so often until 6:30 when my friends want to go out and we decide to hit a resturaunt.. i'm an extremelly picky eater so if they dont have a salad that sounds good to me, i often to terrible.. and then i get super pissed at myself.. and its just turning into a habit and its not going to help me with my personal goals at all, but i dont want to turn my friends down, and they're def. my backbone in all that i do, so how do you balance it? do u just sit at the resturaunt and sip water while they eat or what? im totally confused. thanks.
