Hi All!! I joined this team a couple of months ago, but I haven't really been active. I decided I should be since I joned it for a reason. Well...I just thought I could use the support of some other college students. I will check back later!

Hi all, I just joined this group today. I felt I could use the support of some college students going through the same stresses as me. I'm also hoping I can help with some tips, as I am the eternal college student. I graduated high school in 1998 and I haven't stopped taking college classes since. I am a full time student at a community college in Berks County, PA. I also work full time. I used to go to school in Boston at Wentworth IT where I too lived in the dorm and ate all that unhealthy cafeteria food. Good luck to everyone. I'll get back to SP tomorrow, after I take the exam that I should be studying for right now!

Hello my name is Amanda, I joined Spark a couple of months ago but am new to the group. I just started school on Thursday for massage therapy & I can already tell I'm going to have to plan on bringing healthy snacks & rearrange my workout schedule. I also have a husband, 3 kids & 2 dogs so I'm going to be really busy now with school but I really hope with a little bit of planning I'll stay on track. emoticon

I have joined Sparkpeople a few days ago....and i already feel i have found what i was looking for.It is very hard on me to keep on calculating the calorie intake....but now i fell happier cause the only calculation i have to do are those concerning school...A big event is in front of me...My graduation..so i don't have time to spend on worrying about gaining weight....so spark people has actually taken this off my shoulders

Welcome to The Spark, Vibrantsalads (cute name!) I fought the freshman 15 last year and lost. And gained more weight over the summer. Ugh! I lost some last semester and gained some over winter break. College is a lot of ups and downs, and not just with weight! Just keep at it and keep a positive attitude and you'll do fine. Sparkpeople.com is a really wonderful community. I've found it really helpful, and I'm sure you will too. We're all here for you- we're a team! Keep at it!

Hi!

I'm a college freshman fighting the freshmen fifteen. I flew back to school Wednesday after gaining even more weight during winter break. =/

This semester, I have an outline, written down, of my goals both academically and physically. My key to success will be accountability (through this site and my personal journal). Sometimes I get derailed, though, so...

Keep me motivated? =)

Hello everyone!

My name is Jennifer, and I am in my second year at Brock University in St. Catharines, ON, Canada. I am working towards a concurrent Child and Youth Studies/Education degree in hopes of being a teacher, so I am no stranger to stress. I have seven courses this term (as opposed to only five last term), and I'm already feeling stressed even though we've only been back for a week! Definitely a challenge to stay away from the chips, fast foods, fried foods and cafeteria junk when you've got virtually no time to eat. I just started on the SP program as well, which I'm sure will be interesting when essay season rolls around.

Anyway, it is nice to meet you all, and hopefully you'll be hearing a little more from me since I do spend quite a bit of my time on the computer.

Hello, all College Sparkers! This is your spark captain. I haven't been able to respond to you all lately, since like August but I just wanted to let you all know that I am back in full force. School is stressful and we all need a little help from eachother.

We can do it!!!

Hey I'm Jenna, I'm a sophomore at LeMoyne college in Syracuse and I just joined the team. I find my biggest challange in losing weight is the people who say I don't need to. My biggest motivation is remembering the great shape I was in highschool. In fact, this saturday my HS is having an Alumni volleyball game and I'm pumped to play! :)

Howdy, I'm Kelly, and I'm a freshman at the University of West Florida studying economics. The dorm munchies are beginning to take hold (I'm munching out of a box of Life right now emoticon ), so I've decided to whoop thier schemeing little tails before I'm totally lead over to the dark side.

But I totally lack drive and motivation. As much as I tell myself "Yeah, I'm going to lose weight and get healthy!" my body rebels and laziness kicks in. So I guess I need someone to give me a good kick in the pants every now and then and tell me to get off my duff and do something!

Hey Jenn...you'll do fine. You seem like a smart girl. Just keep in mind all those late hours usually means a lot of burger and pizza runs! Make sure you have healthy snacks and dinners with you. I can understand putting in the hours on projects. I'm also on my last semester, and I'm a pre-med major. The stress can be unbelievable at times...but just remember, a test is only a test, and a project is only a project. Do you best and forget the rest!

Hi all, my name is Jenn and I just joined. Next monday I will be starting my last semester of college. It is going to be intense since I am in one of the hardest programs...Multimedia Design. All we do for this semester is work on about 8 or so projects for our portfolio(which we also have to create). In the past, students have slept at the college because there is just so much work to do. But our professors have said as long as you plan your time out well, you should be ok.
It's going to be hard to balance staying healthy and fit and doing a good job in my last year.
I'm scared.

Well, so far my diet's going fine, but I go back to Hades (oops, I mean college) on the 8th and all bets are off. I WILL keep going. It might keep me sane with all the downtime I'll have (I go to the biggest party school in my state, I'm surrounded by drunks, so I don't have a lot of friends there.)

Hello everyone,

I recently joined the team and I just wanted to introduce myself. I am a busy wife and mother and I decided that 2007 would be the year for me to take my health and losing weight seriously. I have lost weight in the past, but I came short of my goals when I gained the weight back. I am so busy with my family obligations, work, school, and church that I have little time for myself. I decided that this would be the year for me to make time for myself. Sparkpeople is a great place for me to start because I am surrounded by so many positive people that have many of the same goals that I have. I will receive the support that I need in order for me to achieve my goals and I will also be supportive to others in helping them achieve their goals.

Hi, nice to meet you, Ashton, and all the rest of you. I am a freshman at Boston University studying Biochemistry. I have been part of sparkpeople for about 10 months, but I have just started to take it seriously again yesterday. I actually lost a few pounds during college because I made sure that I didn't have any food in my room to snack on. However, since I've been home I've been eating like crazy. Hopefully I can control myself this break and not go back to my old ice cream eating, late-night snacking self.

Have a great vacation, and Happy Holidays to you all!

Hi everyone! I'm a Junior Spanish major at the University of Louisville! I am just trying to drop a few pounds and keep them off, and eating right is SO difficult in college! I really love all-natural organic foods, but they are too expensive to buy all the time since I am paying for college! Any suggeations on how to eat right?

Hey all.

I start Sparking this past summer, but have only recently began to get involved with the site. I've lost 30 pounds so far, and improved my overall health (which is more important). At least 10 of those pounds have been since school began in August. Losing weight in college is possible!

Stress, class, homewok, and whatnot have interfered a bit with my weightloss recently, causing me to slow down. At least I haven't gained though! I'm still working out and eating healthy (hard on a mandatory meal plan, but doable), and that's the imporant thing.

Callen, I had a week like that too. I hate running out of groceries because then I have to eat dining hall food, and who knows what the nutritional value of that is. I also didn't exercise at all last week. I'm ready to get back to my routine now though. Here's to a fresh start!

After all, tomorrow is another day.

So Monday update...I fell way off the wagon this past week. I live in a sorority house and this semester I have gotten into the healthy habit of buying the food I eat rather than eating the crap they serve us but this past week I was a little out of control. I started out fine but then I ran out of groceries and didn't make the time to go to the store so I told myself I had no other choice but to eat the food being prepared. I definitly felt icky, especially when I stepped on the scale and saw that I had gained about three pounds. But what is interesting is that I am ready to go again. I view this week as a fresh start and I'm ready to refocus. Normally when I have binge weeks I can never motivate myself to stop and so its another six months to a year that I decide to try weight loss again. I am going to reevaluate my goals and make them more specific and I think that will help a lot. I'll also be making a trip to the grocery store tomorrow! Hope everyone else is doing well!

I've found an afective way for me to fit in exercise pretty reguarly. i take the bus the 9 miles from my apartment to the edge of the next town. then from the bus stop to the campus i bike. it takes me about 15 mins one way ( not sure milage, need a odometer for my bike) but it really gets me going. then i can either bike home in reverise of the way i got there. i tend not to like just going walking by myself and can't get myself to get out the door. i love it because then if i end up doing errans i get more time biking. emoticon

Hey everyone...I'm also a waterloo student, i think there's another one here on it. I'm going in for a breast reduction in May...so I'd really love the body to match. I am living in a house with four close friends, whom are health conscience as well so this would be a good time to start. I'm vegetarian and don't have alot of time to cook...but hopefully I'll be able to find some. I'm also not a big fan of the huge line ups in the gyms on campus so I'm looking for some alternative...nice to meet you all!

Hi girls,
I've been a sparkpeople member since July but I just decided to join this team today! Since coming back to school I've stuck to my new lifestyle (NOT diet emoticon ) better than I thought I would but the weekends are definitly the hardest. It's really hard to incorporate drinking into my daily calorie allowance because they take up so many so I usually don't...My weight has gone up and done since I've been here but I'm definitly not seeing the results I saw over the summer. I know I need to exercise more but it is so difficult to make time for it. I'm so busy during the day that when I have a free moment I'd rather spend it relaxing. I think I am going to try and jumpstart an exercise plan asap and hopefully I'll start to see the pounds melt away once again...hope all of you are doing well with your goals! best of luck.

I like the idea of using it for other ways of measuring, for the people that don't use scales. awesome.

Great idea Aubrey! (creating a new topic for weigh ins).

It doesn't have to be just weigh-ins either, like Davis suggested. It can be for posting measurements or any other indicator of working towards our individual goals. (most ppl are working towards a weight goal, but others are just working toward living a healthier lifestyle).

I hope everyone is having a good weekend!

In response to a weigh in day, I don't have a scale. Yeah, trying to lose a little weight and no scale, doesn't make sense to me either. However, I would be happy to have a measure day as I try to measure every week, but I tend to forget.

After all, tomorrow is another day.

Well, regarding the weigh-in...I have a weird weigh-in schedule, which is Tuesday one week, Thursday the next week, then back to Tuesday, etc. Yeah, it's somewhat random, but that's what I do.
However, maybe we could make another topic in this board where we can comment on our weigh-ins...like we can weigh in when we want to, but just like say "oh, I lost 3 pounds this week" or whatever. Is that making sense? Yeah I dunno.
--
There isn't much else to say right now, but things are going well here...I've been drinking SOO much water...today alone I've already had 4 nalgene bottles (128 oz, or 16 cups). I feel GREAT. I weigh in on Tuesday and I'm measuring myself tomorrow. I always get excited about weighing in and everything...I don't know why, but I do...yeah I'm weird.

Hello! I've been on Spark for a little over a month and love it. it's great all the articles and all the tools are so helpful. I'm 21, going to MHCC in Oregon. I came to loose the weight that came acoumlating over 5 years of no portion control. I just hate the feeling of being tiered and feeling fat so i desided to do something about it. so here i am... doing.

Hi, all! I'm a senior at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. You girls seem like a supportive and interesting group, and I love the idea of the Halloween Challenge!

I've been struggling to take off my 'chunk' since I put it on in first year- I'm going to volunteer with women in law and development in Ghana, Africa after graduation, and the extra weight just will not do in that type of heat.

Must get to class, but I just wanted to say hi and thanks for letting me join your group!!

Nikki- I think there's a couple of seniors in this group, myself including. We'll have to work towards meeting our weight goals by graduation!!! I want to be more self confident when I go for job interviews and be more active so I have tons of energy in the classroom when I begin teaching.

DAVISJ21 - I bought these DVDs...Leslie Sansone, Walk Away the Pounds...there are a bunch of different ones...they don't require equipment, but of course you have to buy the DVDs, so I don't know if that's what you're looking for...There is also just plain walking...like you said.

NIKKIXE - to get the weight tracker...go to the "my home" tab at the top of the page. Then in the left corner under the tabs it says "my spark", then "welcome (username)" and under that it says edit/add spark page....when you do that, there is an option to make a weight tracker. I hope that works for you...

Welcome to all of the new people! I'm so glad you joined our group. It's great to have the support of others wit hsimilar goals.

In answer HILLEIGH I usually do my strength workout MWF right after breakfast because I don't have early classes those days. I skipped it yesterday because I had lots of homework that I had to get done. I'm really bad about doing my cardio though. Do y'all have any suggestions for something fun to do for cardio that doesn't require any equipment? I suppose I'll have to start walking . . .

After all, tomorrow is another day.

in response to HILLEIGH- i workout in the morning before class...i use workout DVDs (leslie sansone's walk away the pounds series if you were curious) and they only take half an hour. So I wake up early enough to get them in...I make it a part of my schedule so I don't skip it.

I'm in Boston and it is getting cold here pretty quick too. I've been getting up and going to my schools gym early in the morning. Its hard for me because I am not a morning person at all, but after getting in my workout I feel so much better. However I haven't started work yet and I work at a elementary school starting at 7:30 in the morning, so I think my workout will change very soon because of that!

Hello everyone!
When do you find time to workout?
I've been getting up early to go walking in the morning, but its getting much colder in CT. I thinking about maybe walking over to the park in between classes to get in some cardio, or maybe when I get home for the day. I need to set up a definate schedule of when I'll workout everyday so it just becomes routine.
What works for you guys?

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm fairly new to SparkPeople and this team. This team is so perfect for me b/c I'm a full-time student with 14 units. It actually isn't hard for me to maintain my study habits, but I just have so little time for anything else. It took me forever until I was able to start a page and anything. As it is, health is sadly a lower priority. So I'll need firm reminder every now and then what's truly important. I guess when grades are at stake, people neglect their health, but it's time to change people!

Hello everyone!
I was so excited to find this team here on spark. I'm a senior in college now and just moved back to school. I started spark over the summer and stuck to it very well for about 3 weeks and lost 4lbs with it. Then I went on a vacation and it was all down hill from there. I gained the weight back and then some, but I am now back here trying again and there are no vacations to take anymore! So instead of have a huge goal of getting to my target weight, I'm taking it real slow.
A few years ago, I had a hormonal problem with my body that caused me to gain a lot of weight. I am completely better now, no more raging hormones anymore, but my weight had gone up to 162lbs. Now it is two years later and I am 143lbs. My original weight before the health issue was around 130 and I am trying to get back down to that weight once more. I understand that that was several years ago and my body has changed, but it is what I would like to obtain and maybe lose a little more? Nevertheless, small goals for now!
Anyway, I am so happy to have found this group because it does get really hard with eating and exercise being at school . I hope we can all stick together! I am also looking for a buddy so if anyone is interested let me know!

Hello all new people who have joined this team.

First of all I am so sorry for not posting earlier. My school schedule has been really crazy and I find myself not having time to even check my school e-mail.

I am so glad you chose this team because we will be able to keep eachother motivated during our college experience. I know that I sure need it right now because I find my self wanting to revert to my old habits of eating fast food because I dont have the time to sit down and eat a normal meal. This group, I hope will help me out to stay motivated and lose the weight I want.

Thanks for Joining and Good luck every one!!!

Hey everyone.

My name is Becky and I am a junior at Dowling College on Long Island. I was reading some of what you guys have already said and I'm glad that I'm not the only one who has trouble in school. I live off campus with my boyfriend and his family...we constantly eat out. 1/2 Price appatizers at Applebee's is the worst. It takes so much time planning out meals and cooking everynight after student teaching, work, and classes. Hopefully we can all help each other through this year. Good Luck everyone!

Hi, I just joined this group, hope that's okay.
My name is Aubrey, and I just started my first year of college 2 weeks ago. I am living off campus, and so far that has proved to be both easier and harder in terms of my weight loss.
It's easier because the campus is about 2 miles away, and so MW&F I ride my bike to classes, and on T&Th I walk (since I only have 1 class that day), so I get in a decent amount of exercise. Also, I'm living with my Grandparents, and they tend to have better food choices...for the most part. She doesn't buy a lot of sugary cereals, and she always has fresh veggies & fruit on hand. But they also buy ice cream and oreos often, which is what I tend to eat too much of...but I'm working on that.
Also, sometimes it's hard for me to get in my required water. I usually fill up my water bottle before I leave for class (it holds 4 cups) and usually I'm finished with it when I get home. But then I've still got 8 cups left to drink (I make it a daily goal to drink 12 cups of water since I do so much biking/walking to school), and usually it's late in the day, and so most of the water I finish before bed which involves me waking up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. I'm not sure what to do about that. I suppose I should try drinking a bottle before school and filling up and then drinking another at school. Hmm...

Well I suppose that's a long introduction. I've got to go get my workout in right now, but I will check back in later today or tomorrow.

Thanks, Jessica :-)

I'll measure myself next Wednesday. That way it'll be on the same day I weigh myself. And I will NOT make that silly mistake again...of eating horribly the day before I weigh myself...

Still can't believe I did that.

Oh well :-) I'm a member of the 1 day challenge team, and today's challenge is to walk 10,000 steps (five miles) and so that's what I'll do. If I walk 3.5mph, which I usually do. Either that, or 4mph... It'll take 85 minutes!!! Seems like a lot!... I could break it down to two 2.5 mile sessions, but this'll be fun...to watch a movie while I'm walkin..those are always over 85mins :-)

We'll see how I do. :-)

My short-term goal is to lose 10lbs by the end of this month (September)!

My long-term goal is to be at my goal weight by the end of this year. Hopefully earlier!! I know I can do it. It's just over a pound a week. It can't be that hard ;-) :-D

Welcome Chantel,
Don't get discouraged about not losing weight your first week. I actually gained two pounds my first week on sparkpeople. Maybe you could try measuring your waist, hips, etc. I've lost a few inches, which is really encouraging. good luck!

After all, tomorrow is another day.

Hello everyone! My name is Chantel :-) I go to Florida Atlantic University. Fortunately, I live off campus, so it's a bit easier to choose healthy food. Bad thing is, though, I live with my boyfriend and his family. His family LOOOOVVESS frying EVERYTHING. Their typical dinner (they're puerto rican) is fried steak, white rice, beans, and fried plantains. Yummy stuff, yes, but I'm getting tired of all the fattening stuff they eat!! And none of them are fat. I'm surprised...

Also, I don't have a job.. So I have to rely on my boyfriend to buy food and stuff for me. I get to choose sometimes what he buys, but he buys stuff for himself as well..good stuff.. Like cheesecake, pastries, cheetos... Stuff like that. I'm alone a lot.. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I'm alone at home most of the day. That's when I LOVE eating and watching tv. It sucks... It's like... I wake up, know no one is home, and have this huge urge to just turn on the television and just eat something (usually unhealthy)...

And on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I'm on campus all day. There isn't a cafeteria cause it's not a main campus or anything.. I mean, there's a mini one.. But..it's not like a normal college campus cafeteria. The stuff they sell is either really expensive or it's unhealthy. It sucks. Since I have to use my boyfriend's money to purchase the food, I feel bad when I have to spend a lot... So I tend to get the unhealthy stuff...

There's a workout center at my campus... It's free and everything.. Problem is, they require workout clothing and a towel to be brought. I could, technically, bring those things, BUT... I have four classes each day on Tuesday and Thursday.. That's a lot of books! There's no more room in my back pack for the clothes and towel.

I have a treadmill at home, but how our room is set up makes it difficult to get the treadmil out of the corner, move everything around... I don't know.. It's just crazy!!! And the neighborhood I live in isn't pleasant to walk around. Besides, I'm in south Florida and it rains all the time.

Yes, I know.. excuses.. I could be doing other cardio exercises and stuff...

I've been on Sparkpeople for a week so far.. I've been doing pretty well! Just one day I went WAYYYYY over on the calories!!! I weighed myself the first day, and then a week later (yesterday) and I lost nothing. I was very surprised.... It didn't feel too good seeing the same number :-(...

But that doesn't discourage me enough to make me quit! I know I can do this. I think the scale just said the same thing because the day before I weighed myself (late the night before, too)... I ate HORRIBLE!! (over 2800 calories!!)... So that's probably why.

Next Wednesday I'll weigh myself again. We'll see!!!

Okay, I think I'm done with my novel ;-)

Hi girls,
I just want to introduce myself. My name is Jessica and I'm a junior Interior Design major at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC.
Since I live on campus, I'm mostly worried about cafateria food. Almost none of it is healthy, although they do always have a salad bar. This week cheeseburgers have been on the menu four times! I'm trying to cook for myself some in the kitchen in my dorm. So far, that's working out pretty well. However, I feel like I should eat at the caf. since it's already paid for.
Anyway, it's great to see that I'm not the only college student trying to eat healthy.

Hey girls. I just joined the group. (4 ppl now, I hope more join in). I go back to school tomorrow. I'm a senior... edu major. I don't want to get off track with my diet with all the stress from school.

I'm worried about all the tempting foods at school too... pizza, hamburgers, icecream sundaes and cake at the cafe... It's sooo hard to resist when everyone else is eating it. And I absolutely hate having other people know that I'm on a diet.

I hope we can support each other to stay strong during the semester... I'm determined and I don't want to give up!!!

Even with having dessert (tiramisu) on my birthday, I somehow managed to stay within my range. Not sure how that happened, heh.

I moved in to the second stage today. One of the action steps is to buy measuring spoons/cups and measure food portions... I am not quite sure how I am supposed to do this when I eat almost every meal in the cafeteria. The portions there aren't that large, to begin with. And when I eat in my room, I usually have a small carton of milk and a cereal bar or something, which are already portioned. I don't want to just say that I did the steps when I haven't but they just aren't realistic for me right now. Any suggestions?

Heck ya, you have to cheat sometimes!! This whole weekend is a cheat for me becasue I just got back from a Packer's game tonight and the only food they have is the stuff with lots of FAT!!! Like brats, hot dogs, burgers, fries, ect. I have to cheat becasue I never get this kind of stuff the rest of the time.

Then tomorrow I am going to a Brewers Game and the same rule will apply.

ITS CHEAT CENTRAL FOR ME!!!

But come monday, the diet is back on.

Oh, definitely! I plan on cheating once a week, heh - the school cafeteria has a Sundae Bar on Friday Nights and I figure a scoop of ice cream mixed with some Oreo Cookies is a good reward for sticking with things during the rest of week. Lol.

I've had two good days. Not only have I stuck to my plans but I feel so much better right now. Energized, motivated, etc. All summer I've been sleeping until noon or later but yesterday and today I was able to get at 9 with no problem and do what I needed to do. I spent most of yesterday hauling my stuff to the dorms and I unpacked right away - and didn't even need a nap afterwards, heh. That right there is progress!

And now I'm off to make some phone calls (job interviews, cross your fingers for me!) and run errands. TTYL

That is an interesting fact about the diet soda. I gonna have to research that more. I may end up stopping that altogether. That may help me lose the weght even better.

I have been pretty good about the food choices I make except for today. My boyfriend came back from the farmers market with apple turnovers (to make up for forgetting our anniversary yesterday) It was really good but I am sure it was chocked full of calories. But you gotta cheat sometimes right!!! Oh well.

Well I have to go and make an indoor greenhouse for my plants. Its gonna get cold really quick in WI and with school starting soon, I wont have the time to do it later.

Talk to ya soon.

I love fruits and veggies...! There just never seems to be enough around here. As for the diet soda - I read an article the other day (I forget which magazine) claiming that, in the long run, it can actually lead to weight gain. There was some study, I think. I don't how accurate the information was, though. The hardest thing for me thus far is cardio. One of my goals is to exercise for 15 minutes each day (while watching tv, heh) but so far, I've only done it once.

Today was alright. My food choices aren't altogether the best but I'm trying to take small steps - like passing on chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant. I went shopping earlier; it's so depressing, trying to find clothes that look nice and are in my size. Everything I tried on fit, though, and I didn't look half bad. I also discovered that my behind is very oddly shaped, lol.

Anyway, that's all for now. I'm going to be pretty busy in the next few days but I'll try to check in once or twice.

I have alot of medium term goals but only a few that I am worrying about right now. I try to eat 2 fruits and veggies a day, drink only diet soda, limit one caffeine drink a day and try to get 10 minutes of cardio a day. So far the easiest has been drinking diet soda and eating the fruits and veggies. But most of the soda I drink usually is caffeine free anyway so that one also is pretty easy.

I have exciting news, I weighed myself today and I finaly show that I lost weight. I am so excited. I know that if I have days like this one again, it will be easy to loose all the weight I want to loose. Yeah me.

Well, talk to you later!

Good morning! I hope everything is going good in your neck of the woods. And thanks for the warm welcome! As for me, I'm going to the doctor's today... I know I only started 3 days ago but I'm not sure if my starting weight is totally accurate. I think the hardest thing thus far has been drinking all that water (yuck!) and not eating as much as I normally would at meals (no second helpings).

Do you have any medium-term goals? I have 2 (increase enegry, reduce anxiety) and so far, I really like all of the short-term suggestions.
