My gym is always packed... i go to school on long island, and realistically, it's a very superficial place to live. The machines are always packed, and I'm used to signing up for a machine about 30 minutes in advance.
My strategy is just to keep my workout schedule open. I go when I have a few free hours, often late at night (since the gym is open til midnight), and I don't get my heart set on going on a specific machine. Some nights I bike, or jump on the elliptical. When the treadmills aren't free, I either run around the track, or I run sprints on the stair climber machine.
There are always options, and it makes working out a lot more fun... I never really know how I'll spend my 90 minutes :)
Yes! I'm totally having that problem, too! SparkPeople actually sent out an e-mail last week about the best times to go to the gym. Of course, college life is different, but I would say that the hours are roughly the same--it suggested mid-morning to early afternoon--duh.
Also, Tuesday my friend and I went to the gym around 7:30am. It was pretty packed. Today we got there at 7:15 and it was a completely different experience. So while I will say that it sucks to get up that early, for the time being that might be the best option. Plus, before I even start class, I've done 30 minutes of cardio, drank 2 cups of water, and eaten a piece of fruit. Not bad for being awake for an hour.

Does anyone else feel REALLY frustrated with how busy the gyms are right now since everyone is getting started on their new year's resolutions? I have to wait a minimum of an hour for a treadmill now and it really weakens my motivation. It happened today, but thankfully I have yoga tonight, but sometimes if I have to wait I just get too frustrated and don't even want to work out. I guess the only thing I can do is find a less busier time and try to work around the busy-ness. It's just frustrating that people sign up 3-4 hours in advance which means that there are rarely any cardio machines available by a certain time. Does anyone else feel this way????
