My gym is always packed... i go to school on long island, and realistically, it's a very superficial place to live. The machines are always packed, and I'm used to signing up for a machine about 30 minutes in advance.
My strategy is just to keep my workout schedule open. I go when I have a few free hours, often late at night (since the gym is open til midnight), and I don't get my heart set on going on a specific machine. Some nights I bike, or jump on the elliptical. When the treadmills aren't free, I either run around the track, or I run sprints on the stair climber machine.
There are always options, and it makes working out a lot more fun... I never really know how I'll spend my 90 minutes :)
