Tanning salons use artificial rays to beat winter blues

It is yet to be determined whether a luscious pale or a Maui bronze is the epitome of skin perfection since every era seems to bring a new trend.

Regardless of ISU students' personal tanning tendencies, Bloomington-Normal is peppered with salons, all willing to take them to the dark side (literally).

Whether searching for a tiny establishment or a big-name tanning salon frequented by hundreds of students, a pursuit of a quality bed in Bloomington-Normal is not a strenuous one. Among the salons in town is Eurotan, located at 901 S. Main St. in Normal.

"[Eurotan] is a really nice salon without being super expensive," manager Shawna McCoud said. "It's always very clean."

With ample parking and a convenient location, it is easy to see why Eurotan is a favorite of many ISU students.

"We offer seasonal deals for pretty much every holiday," McCoud said. "We do high-pressure tanning. If there is a 'safer tan' that would be it.

"Individual tans are $7, [but we also] offer memberships and a 'club' for $19.95 a month. Normally it costs $50 to join but right now it is only $10. All our lotions are also 20 percent off," McCoud said.

South Beach Tanning, a salon that sees an extremely high concentration of college students, is another great spot to bask away the winter blues.

With an edgy décor and a mounted flat screen TV, the inside of South Beach looks more like a rock star's tour bus than a humble establishment wedged between Young America and Jimmy John's. South Beach Tanning offers a wide range of Mystic Tans and body waxing, as well as several "regular" tanning options.

The Ultimate Tan on 604 Dale St. is another viable bronzing alternative for those living in and around Bloomington-Normal.

Membership to the Ultimate Tan costs $18.88 and includes the use of "super" and "advanced" beds as well as face tanners at no extra cost.

"Members of the Ultimate Tan can cancel or freeze their [account] for free anytime they want," Karen Wimpy, manager of the Ultimate Tan in Normal, said. "We provide goggles [eyewear] for our client to use free. All staff are certified tan care consultants," she said.

Packages for one to 20 consecutive sessions are available to those who do not want to purchase a membership, and prices range from $12-$300.

"We offer Ultrabronz quartz bulb tanning where you can get a real tan in as few as three visits and last up to a month," Wimpy said.

"We have six locations, 503 N. Prospect [in] Bloomington, 604 Dale in Normal, and others in Peoria, Champaign and Springfield. Our tanners may use their tans or membership at any location," Wimpy added.

Other tanning locations include the Sun Room Tanning on Hovey St., Neon Rayz Incorporated on Raab Rd., and P.S. Nice Tan on Empire St. in Bloomington.

While it is once again becoming increasingly popular to look more like Greta Garbo than Pamela Anderson, establishments across the Twin Cities will make certain there is no shortage in artificial sunshine this winter. © Copyright 2009 The Daily Vidette
