The best way is probably to give the scales a miss for a week or so and ring the changes with exercise. Maybe trying something new like pilates or yoga or going swimming. I had this problem in April, but it sorted in the end. Good luck! emoticon Jean

all i can say is... "eat the frog first" that is a saying i read a while back... eating a frog would be pretty awful, right? well, the thought is, if you do what you really don't want to do FIRST, then you will be happy that it is out of the way... so... EAT YOUR FROG!!!

question... i could use some motivation... i have been working out A LOT and getting better at eating better, but the scale has not budged! i am getting pretty discouraged and disheartened... i know about platues and such, it is just frustrating to work so hard and not see the results... emoticon

without knowing why you are having pain, I won't offer any exercise suggestions other than talk to your doctor about gentle/safe exercises, and let your body tell you how much you can do. Slow but steady walking helps to boost seratonin, which also helps our bodies fight pain. If you've put on some weight, that's okay - you know you can make good choices with food and exercise when your body is ready, and the scale doesn't tell the whole story. Use a journal or a blog to reflect on the other types of progress you've made - new habits with snacks? cooking? better choices when you eat out? a better relationship with your body? improved self esteem? Don't let the scale get you down or take away all that good positive energy. You can do it!

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.

I have been in pretty severe pain for over 4 weeks, not able to exercise and dependent on others to fix food,so I am leery of weighing Tuesday. Need pointers on how to stay motivated if I have gained my weight back. I never gave up, did the best I could to be good, but circumstances did not always permit. emoticon

Had a lazy day today but after the last few weeks I needed it. I've spent average 5 hours a day digging and lugging things about in the garden. Hope I can pick up again tomorrow.

hmmm... lazy you say, yet you are planning to ride from London to Paris ... and you've lost 77 pounds. Seems to me that lazy is the last word you ought to be labelling yourself with! Anyhow, if I had to ride my bike from London to Paris, I would want to do some serious training to make sure that I could tackle the ride without injury. Perhaps you could create a training schedule, with some cross training and weights to make it well rounded, and some exploration of meals that are appropriate to the level of caloric expenditure that a ride like this will entail?
Either way, it sounds like an amazing challenge to set for yourself and I am so jealous! I love cycling and am pretty sure I would love France too. I spend a great deal of my summer watching the tour de france - I can just picture what an amazing adventure this will be!
My final thoughts on motivation: have your kids go through magazines and clip out pictures of cycling/england/france and make you a big collage to inspire your training! Best of luck and please keep us posted on your progress.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.

MG,
you've lost 77 lbs???? You motivate me! Don't be discouraged. Look at how much you've accomplished and how much you have the power to inspire.

Hi Ladies - I found all your comments and ideas VERY inspirational!!!

I'm just flat out lazy and have been stuck in a rut since having my children (the youngest being 4 years old). I'd had a very 'interesting' day and signed up (out of the blue) to take part in a London to Paris bike ride (over 5 days). Now I know that I'm lazy and lacking motivation, so can somebody give me an on-line kick up the backside??

Here's hoping and thanking you all in advance.

mg

I find it amazing how much easier it is to re-motivate myself when I can admit that my motivation is flagging. I like the idea of taking stock at the end of each day of whether there are any things I regret doing/not doing, and striving for "no regrets" - I'm going to steal that one for myself! My recent source of motivation is that my dad had a mini-stroke (no longer term side effects but perhaps a predictor of things to come?) - so my motivation to eat healthfully & exercise regularly and generally seize the day is this rather somber reminder that life is short baby, enjoy it while you can!

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.

Hi all, I just joined this group and I love some of these ideas for those days. One thing I sometimes do is give myself a choice with something else I have to do but hate as much or more. So I say, ok, if you don't want to go to work out, then you will have to do your income tax or wash the windows, or whatever. Usually I end up at the gym.

Hiya,

I actually started this thread becuase I was really unmotivated one day a while back. After getting good advice on here about how much better I would feel if I just went and did it I was much more motivated. Now every day I get up I think about what I would regret not doing when I go to bed that night and make a point of doing everything on that list.

No regrets!

Don't know if that makes sense but I hope it does! lol

Don't beat yourself up! If you are not feeling well, take care of yourself (pamper yourself back to great health so that you can give your workouts the effort you want to). You have a plan, and that is half the battle. For now, until you are feeling better, just create the habit. Take a short walk. Remember that tomorrow is a new day and that you can always start fresh! Hope you feel better soon.

I am in need of motivation. I have missed my workouts for a good while, and on top of it all I am sick. But I don't know what is wrong. I've been tired, dizzy, light headed... so I am not sure what to do. We are going to be setting up the spare room in the house to be our office, and will also be my workout room. I am looking forward to that. I don't like going to the gym so I have workout DVD's which I want to use. And I will do a workout every night. Just got to get there...

Thank you all for your support and motivation today. I did end up going to the gym and my trainer completely beasted me until he saw the bruising on my shoulder, then he went easier on me lol. HAd a good workout, feel a million times better for going and will never moan again. Really looking forward to the end of the week (Saturday for me) becuase he has promised to come to the jump trail with me and try to ride my old bike. Should be worth seeing. If I can get away with it I'll film it and post it on here somewhere as revenge.

Thanks again everyone.

Here is how I "trick" myself into going to the gym. I tried it last Monday when I was so sore from dirtbike riding that I was walking funny. I take myself to the gym with a promise to myself of "I only have to do one circuit, or thirty minutes, or I can skip the leg machines because my legs are sore. 100% of the time I use this trick, I end up doing more than I had to and I feel so much better when I'm done than when I walked in there. This is what works for me.

Great suggestions for motivating a SP friend on a day when he/she would rather skip the gym I noticed that there is a "resident trainer" at the gym he/she uses. My husband and I go to a Fitness Together gym where we have regular appointments with our trainer. Because we have appointments, we keep them like all other appointments. Lo and Behold, two couch potatoes age 50plus are getting in shape, one regularly scheduled appointment at a time :-))

I have days like that too. When you really don't want to go but you know you should? Well you just need to go and do it. Just go for 15 min and see how you feel. If you're feeling good stick around another 15. Once you get there and do it you'll feel great about yourself. If you don't go you'll feel lowzy. Get up and go!! emoticon

I hate days like that when you don't want to go but I agree! When I miss one workout session then it takes me a week or two to get back on track!

GO GIRL GO! Get off your bum and get to the gym!!

You can do it!!! Just think how much better you will feel after you get in a good workout!

Hiya

I would do something differnet today anyway because I can't do my normal workout due to my shoulder. I always change it up a bit anyway, for instance I do tae-bo at home, work out with my trainer at the gym, go dirtbiking with my mates, go for a walk with my daughter in the pushchair, etc...I just still can't seem to summon the energy, which is quite strange for me really lol.

Might just bite the bulllet and down a rockstar drink then work off the extra calories in the gym. emoticon

I hate days like this. Give yourself a reward for going to they gym today since its extra tough. Maybe you can treat yourself to a nice dinner or get some pampering or just let yourself do anything you want for yourself tonight. You can do it! Just put on your tennis shoes and go. You will feel so much better about yourself when you are finished! Good Luck! emoticon

hey there...try a different workout. I discovered belly dancing via Shimmy on FitTV-it's an intense workout AND keeps things interesting. I try not to do the same thing every day....hope that helps!
Hang in there...

Hiya

I REALLY need someone to tell me to get up and go to the gym this afternoon! lol. I'm absolutely shattered but know that if I miss one day at the gym I won't go back for a week. emoticon
My shoulder is killing me but I know that I have worked out with injuries before and that the resident trainer there will help me out with getting it back on track, I jsut don't seem to have any 'get up and go' today.

Any ideas?
