Blue Kitty, so that commercial touched you in the same way it touched me! My whole heritage is farmers, all the way back, though my Dad farmed because he loved it and loved the land, his main employment was making cars at Buick Motor Division in Flint, Michigan. He commuted to and from for 33 years and then retired. After that he farmed a little but traveled a lot. He and Mom bought a class C motorhome and hit the road, but of course, kept their Michigan farm.

Peajay, Yes, you are so right! There needs to be a balance between work and recreation, and jobs today don't let you have enough of the latter! So glad that I am a nurse and CAN work on a PRN basis. DH is busy painting the house, hoping we can list it soon.

Anyway, such a good discussion, I am enjoying it! emoticon

BLUEKITTYGP12 & TXGRANDMA: I am with y’all

I use to work 60-70 hour weeks. Then I quit that job only to start my own business in 2005 which required even more time. March 2006 I suffered a major health crisis due to my workaholic practice (belief). This would mark the beginning of my greatest (and longest) epiphany.

When I suitably recovered did I focus solely on farming. Compared to my previous employment farming is so much more rewarding, peaceful and successful. It’s also less stressful, demanding and the hours average between 10-20 hours a week between May and Oct – and totally no hours between Nov and May.

I also realized that the job is NOT who I am or about…and that I can have fun (play) and be responsible (work) too. Gotta have that balance of being an adult and remaining a kid. emoticon

I am glad that I will never work again. My job caused my blood pressure to rise everyday. I stated having heart problems related to stress and I pay for my medicare and secondary health insurance. I love being retired. Nursing is so hard on the body.
TxGrandma I also cried during that commercial. emoticon

Glad your Toe is better, PeaJay 50! That would make it too hard to work out with that sore toe!
I'm not a football fan, either. I just wanted to watch the commercials. That commercial about the farmers has hit it big on You Tube, it is on there. I could watch it over and over, and I would cry every time. It touches me so deeply! You HAVE to see it, especially with your experience and your husband.

How lucky you are to have gotten to know the lifelong farmers and ranchers. You are right, they are born to the life, and wouldn't have it any other way. That is what America is all about: hard work and good people.

You had better get busy with that pruning! emoticon

Today is more computer work and some crafty stuff. I can resume my workout as my toe has healed; stubbed it last Friday badly enough that it turned maroon and blue the next day.

Hope everyone is having a nice week.

TXGRANDMA: I didn’t watch the game; not a football fan. But that commercial sounds awesome. I lived 7 years in western Nebraska; farm and cattle country. As a Home Health Assistant, I cared for men and women who were lifelong farmers and ranchers. These kinds of people are first born, then molded into the life; sturdy, dedicated, simplistic, intelligent, calm – the list goes on. I married a Nebraska farm/ranch man – he’s my mountain.

Also, I have two hazelnut trees that need pruning, six yew bushes and several decorative trees with low hanging branches.

Peajay 50! The time will come soon enough! We haven't really had any kind of winter weather this year, which means the bugs will be really bad this summer. Enjoyed getting my rosebushes and the trees pruned back. Hope they respond well when spring comes!

Got some much needed rain this morning. When I went out to feed about 7:30 AM, wore my hubby's hooded T-shirt to keep my hair dry. Then, went to work. It seems like a long day, sometimes!

How I long to spend my time at home on the land. What do you think of the Super Bowl Commercial about the Farmer? It is the kind of family I was raised in. My Dad and Grandparents from WAY BACK have been close to the land, and loved working hard and growing things. I was in tears by the time that commercial was finished.............It was so beautiful.......... emoticon

Good Morning ladies,

BLUEKITTY: I suffer hypothyroidism. It’s always colder outside to me then the current reading, why I avoid the outdoors in the winter. However in the summer it’s warmer to me, but then I don’t sweat/perspire enough to ward off the warmth.

In Michigan the snow keeps falling. The news states it should warm up tomorrow. Hope so for those having to drive on these icy, snow covered roads.

TXGRANDMA: I long to trim trees and clean up flowerbeds, readying everything for spring. The walls are closing in a bit, like always this time of year.

What is everyone's plans for today?

It was warm and sunny today, about 68 degrees or so. I was outside from 2 till 5 pruning rosebushes and trimming some of the wild limbs off the trees along our pipe fence. Just warm enough to be out in shirt sleeves since I was keeping busy. Hope that you got warmed up! emoticon

I don't know about you all but it is cold and foggy and I have no desire to leave my room. It's 34 and very foggy at 12:30 p.m. I doubt the fog will clear at all. We are having stagnant air where I live in southern Oregon. I love living on a mountain except I hate being cold. I don't have a thyroid anymore and the cold seems to penetrate through my skin to my insides. I keep wanting to go to sleep. emoticon

Hello TXGRANDMA. All my family returned safe, sound yesterday, and ready to relax from their work/school day. However, today everyone is home – closings.

I don’t know what the family is gonna do today but I’ll stay busy with computer work and cleaning house. My weekend is going to be relaxing, spent reading and crafting. I have two book reviews due, and must start my block a month project.

What is everyone’s plan(s) for the weekend?

See everyone on Monday. emoticon

Yes, the weather has changed from rainy to wintery. No work or school cancellations so my family will be on the roads today. I did get yarn last night so can start my afghans, snugglig under a fleece blanket with two little dogs keeping my feet warm. Its a "two-dog" day at my house.

How is everyone else doing?

Here is an idea if your a cheapskate like me. I am really into DIY. I hate supporting people and stores that use an idea our grandparents used all the time and then marketing it.

Houseflies can be caught on homemade flypaper. Bring sugar, water and corn syrup to a boil and spread on brown paper grocery bags for a quick and easy trap.

I gave away a lot of my crafts. Donate to different places. Give as gifts. But I want to start making extra money for other projects and I don't want to pull it out of savings. I can do what others can't or are too lazy to do. Homemade is a big deal here in Oregon. Also we are a tourist trap in Grants Pass. You can stand at a corner and hock your wears here. We have more thrift stores in GP alone to supply most states. We are a major antique supplier. We have two dozen quilt clubs that promote themselves at every out door event, which is every weekend during tourist season. We have a huge farmer's market. Its one of the top 10 in the nation. Why shouldn't I get into to it. I am disabled an unable to be employed. I have to go under the radar so to speak.

Can't believe you can't put a wood stove in your new house! What kind of law is that? Surely the legislature would want you to stay as warm as possible. I hope Texas never starts legislating its citizen's choices like that. I have seen those pellet stoves and they are nice, our friends have one in their house. But, you have to buy the pellets so you are really not saving anything by having one.

We have a lot to do this year, too. Want to sell this house and the land around it here and move to our land in DeLeon, or, sell BOTH places and move to a smaller piece of land somewhere in the country. I just hope that this is the year this house sells. We have done a lot of improvements and work, have a bit more to be done.

I want to raise some chickens and some calves so that we can eat something if the economy continues to go downhill. I am worried about that, because presently, we have no source of food except the grocery store. I was raised on a farm where we always had enough to eat. I guess it is all in the way one is raised........

I used to knit and do crafts, but don't have time any more. I never tried to sell anything I made because I just put too many hours in it..........would give it to family for gifts but not sell it. emoticon

emoticon TXGrandma, We have built the same house twice. The first house was a tri-level. We had a sitting room with a wood stove. This is the same house but built flat as we are all older and some can't walk steps. I don't know why they didn't build the place for a wood stove this time. Wood stoves can not be built into new houses in Oregon. I think the politicians have their fingers in the wood pellet industry. My brother saw over the construction and wouldn't put in a pellet stove. We have a wood stove that my brother bought from a yard sale and was going to install before he died. My dear SO will probably install it sometime this year. We have a lot of projects ahead of us this year.

Your life on the farm sounds like what I am aiming for. I want a simpler life that is not as dependent on the outside world as it is now. Don't get me wrong I love to shop and there's stuff out there that I want. I just would like to not support GMO's and make less of a carbon foot print than the gargantuan one I have so far. I am tired of over packaged products and masses of garbage to be disposed of. I am looking for a totally healthier way of life. We have 12 forested acres to develop and will have a lot of trees for firewood and other things.

Does anyone out there help support themselves with crafts? I've been thinking about doing that for some extra cash. I have a good retirement and no grand kids. emoticon I want to make all the cute things I see.

Hi, everyone!

Thanks for inviting me to this thread, BLUEKITTY! I read back a ways over the responses and saw your recount of being snowed in recently. You need a woodstove! That would keep you warm during power outages.
I remember when I was a kid in Michigan, we would be snowed in quite regularly, we lived on a farm on a narrow dirt road that was canopied by maple trees, and when it snowed heavily or we had an ice storm, the branches would break off the trees and block the road! So, we were trapped with no electricity and no heat. Now, we lived in an old Michigan farmhouse, 2 story with a huge kitchen. Dad would put up a blanket in the archway of the kitchen, and would turn on our gas stove, and that would provide SOME warmth and also allowed us to cook meals. There were seven of us plus the dog all living in one room of that huge farmhouse.........Would have stayed in there all the time, but regularly, twice a day, we had to go out and care for the stock............cattle, pigs and horses! The hard part was getting the hose up out of the basement and getting it hooked up and into the water tank twice a day, then unhooking it and rolling it up in the cold and getting it back into the basement!

I remember the horses and cattle standing expectantly at the water tank and sucking down the relatively warm water as soon as it came out of the hose! We would let them drink their fill and then, shut the water off. It was much too cold to leave water in the tank, it would have been solid ice in about 30 minutes. The temps were usually below zero!

We had a great life on the farm, though, there was a lot of hard work but we all pitched in and helped, and had a lot of LOVE!! emoticon

I have really been having fireside chats. We have been snowed in since Friday. No electricity til Sunday. I even cooked in the fireplace. I live in the countryside of southern Oregon. We live quiet a bit from the city. I am fortunately well prepared to be snowed in. Not so much to be without electricity. Our home is all electric. We had a lot of candles and oil lamps, but it was very cold without heat.

Glad to see someone responding. Today all I did is play Yahtzee with my daughter. I don't think I know how to eat and not play at the same time. The good part of that is that half way through the meal I forget that I am eating and quit. I am keeping my calories down this way. emoticon

Hi everyone. I just got done with 18 quarts spaghetti sauce, + 16 pints. 5 Pints whole tomatoes.
10 Freezer bags peppers. And now starting to make squash soup for the freezer.
My husband's horse that he started ridding when he was 26 years old had to be put down. It was a very emotional time here 3 days ago. My husband is 54 years old. He had liver failure. We knew it was going to happen but not like this. Hope everyone has a better time with your horses than we did.

wow.. we sound alike with the garden wrapping up.. except for hot peppers - I packed away more bell peppers(diced, stirped, hollow for stuffing) than I think we can eat in the next two years.. emoticon somehow I'll be happy for a garden next spring.. but you said it
"I'm tired" for this year anyway. emoticon

Well---I've spent my day trying to take care of the veggies that I picked from my garden. So far, I've done 200 sweet peppers & 2 gallon of hot peppers for the freezer. Not counting a gallon of radishes for the refrigerator. Still have an awful lot to do. But, will have to be tomorrow...I'm tired.

How is everyone else doing?

Come on, pretend you are at the end of the trail and sitting by a warm fireside or bon fire. Share a little about your day or your favorite part of the journey to date.. Sharing is good for the soul and doesn't add anything like roasted marshmellows or smores so we will skip the food this visit. emoticon
