I agree with Milulusbug. It was very helpful to read this thread. I just started taking it too. About a week now. I go back to the Dr. in a couple of weeks and see how I am doing.

I have been on metformin for 1 yr since being diagnosed. I take one pill in the am with breakfast and 1 with dinner - Eating a good dose of protein seems to keep me from getting the runs. I am now on 400 mg am and 850 pm and am gettig morning readings of blood glucose of 89 and afternoon before dinner of 80 and that is eating 2500 to 3000 calories a day and keeping the carbs around 40% -- But I sure am eating a lot of fats to meet the calories needs.
I have found that when I start to get the runs if i cut the doage of metformin the runs stop -- I have gone from 2000 mg a day to 1200 a day with stable blood glucose my last A1C was 6.3 way down from the 10.00 it was a year ago

I found that if I take the Metformin and then fix breakfast it does not give me diarrhea. I have not experienced too much constipation. When I start getting backed up I just wait a little longer after taking my medication to eat and it usually gets me back to normal. I hope this helps.

I take 1000 mg twice a day. The dose before breakfast always gives me diarrhea within an hour of taking it. I'm hoping my body gets used to taking it so I can stay out of the bathroom.

Good Job TKD!!

I have been taking 1 pill at morning for 18 days
and 1 pill at bedtime for the last 11 days. I too am constipated. My biggest question is I don't know when to take my second pill. I have not got a hold of my dr just yet only the nurse. She said bedtime would be fine. But in my head it make since to take with dinner...right cuz it is like insulin and you need it with your meal? I know 5 or 6 hours should not matter but I want to do it right.

Well.. my update to Medformin - I'm losing weight. A miracle in my life to say the least.

I have tried every diet in the book.. every workout in the book.. nothing made the lose weight..

Now on Medformin my second month.. I have gone from 237 doctors scale to 219 , in this short time. I have continued with martial arts, and my workout routine at home. From weight lifting to yoga to cardio of all different types. Medformin does not bother my tummy as much...But, I have notice that it keeps me in line. If I don't eat .. I feel weak.. so now, I have completely changed the foods I eat and how much I eat to what I eat.. I even brought a special cup size bowl to measure my foods to one cup.. wow , its been so helpful.

I'm eating 1509 cal per day.. but I'm working out to burn at least 500 per day.. not easy at all..but I change my workouts so much that it confuses the muscles and keeps it fun! snacking is my biggest help. Snacks consist of .. fruits , veggies, proteins..water..nuts. thats it. but I snack a lot.. and it helps to keep my metabolism burning.. but my portions are very controlled. spoonfuls.. it really works! except for fruits.. I will eat a whole apple , whole banana , not too big. I'm looking forward to fitting into size 6 jeans!

I have been on Metformin for 2 months and it does not bother my stomach but it does make me constipated when taken with food and diarhea when taken without food. So I try to take it without food only once a week so I can clean myself out. It is not an ideal idea but it works ok for me. I am taking one pill a day.

My experience with metformin has been mixed...either it does nothing to my stomach or I will experience nausea and poopitis.. and being at work where I can't get to a bathroom so easily is stressful to say the least.

I started with 1 pill twice a day, but starting Tuesday, I will be taking 2 pills twice a day. Lets see how that goes.

I missed a lot of work when I first started on Metformin due to stomach problems. I was prescribed 2 tablets per day, but found that when I took 2 I missed work the following day. I'm only taking one pill per day now, although I'm still prescribed 2. After 6 months, I've finally gotten used to it with no more discomfort. I am going to try increasing to 2 per day, as my blood sugar is not controlled.

We either make ourselves miserable or make ourselves strong...the amount of work is the same.

Thanks!! I will give it a couple of days and see if the discomfort decreases, if not, I will certainly call my DR back.

I was diagnosed a month ago and put on Metformin. My pharmacist said to call the Dr. if I had trouble with it - was supposed to take 2 x a day. I took it in the morning with food and then at lunch with food, but was having terrible problems during my work day. I changed to one in the a.m. with breakfast and one with dinner, but that kept me up all night. I can't really run out of meetings and need my sleep, so called my Dr. She put me on 1/2 twice a day and that seems to be helping - still keeping my blood sugar under some sort of control and stopped having diarrhea problems. Went in today and she kept it at 1/2 per day - seems to help.

I was put on Metformin and have no issues with it. They expected me too but for some reason I'm fine. I would check with the doctors office and maybe with the pharmasist to see if there is some way to get throught the side effects. I do know that some of the side effects can be temporary, but I would be on the phone pronto if it was me. Sorry I'm not much help......

I just got a diagnosis of Diabetes this week after having a life long family history. My question is regarding Metformin. It is killing my stomach. Dr has me taking one tablet daily this week and supposed to increase to one tablet twice daily next week. OMG I was up most of the night with diarrhea. Does anybody have any suggestions or advice?

Thanks
