Jan I use the sparks tracker and I journal . I had eaten a fiber one bar late .It has 9 grams of sugar . I use the GI Load . It will lower your carbs . I do track them. I am under 100 .

my FBS this morning was 111, too. I've been eating nothing that would raise it. I think there are other factors....weight, stress, and now...how stressed my beta cells are. I starting taking metformin again last night. My hope is that, as my weight goes down and my eating improves, my FBS will go down as well. But, it takes time.

Katherine, do you log and count your carb grams?

If your FBS is 111, and you want it to be lower, then check your carb intake, and lower it.

If I want my FBS lower than 111, then I don't eat those things you mentioned. They're not good for the blood sugar.

Granted, I have days I fall off the wagon, but I don't eat those things regularly.

my FBS was 111

I have not have baked goods , breads or sweets . except I am allowed to have fun package of M & M peanuts . or 2 squares of chocolate or a snickers in a fun package .

I read today. that grains can raise the sugar ???? I have at night . those fish crackers of cheese. mine are whole grain and bake . so I wonder if that the reason my sugar level goes up ?

ZOEWMU,

I'm going to bet you that you are going to loose some weight this week. Insulin is a fat storage hormone, saving you from high blood sugar by storing stuff away. Metformin makes the insulin more effective, so in my mind that makes storage into body fat more effective, and weight loss more difficult.

I know I've read somewhere that metformin can help in body fat loss, which I can't for the life of me understand. But I'll go with my instinct and predict weight loss for you this week.

My 2 hour postprandial today is 99! Now, to get it that way, let's see....no morning decaf with cream. A handful of nuts around 2:30 pm. Which means no food or drink from 7 last evening until 2:30 this afternoon. Then dinner at 7:45 tonight of pork chops with a mustard parmesan rub and half a red pepper with cream cheese. guestimating about 900 calories for the day, 7 grams of net carbs, 62 fat, 74 protein.

I'm happy my numbers are down again. No medication. I'm sure I can't eat like this every day, but, for today, I'll take it and be happy!

It is amazing to me how much one can do as a type-2 diabetic to get more normal blood sugar:
1) eat fewer carbs, I mean like 30 to 40 grams a day, not 80.
2) loose body fat
3) exercise moderately

Exercise is for blood sugar control is not to loose weight by burning calories off, though it will do a little of that, but exercise will influence the cells, keep them more biochemically active, make them less insulin resistant.

So there you have it.

P.S. I 'm off to Europe for 3 weeks, with intermittent internet access. I'll be here when I can.

Loosing body fat is another key to better blood sugar. Insulin is trying to lower blood sugar by getting it into cells, both lean muscle and organs, but also into fat cells.

It makes sense that the more fat cells fill up, the less easy it is to put more into them. There are two ways to fill them up more, take insulin, or make your own insulin more effective by taking metformin.

So loosing body fat will probably give you more leeway on how many carbs your body can handle without blood sugar getting too high. If you are lucky after loosing weight your body chemistry may normalize. In my case though that didn't happen, but I was on metformin for 12 years.

Watch what JRWELL58 is attempting, she is a member of "Keto Clarity". She is trying to go on a very low calorie diet in an attempt to reverse type-2 diabetes. I don't know if that is possible. So I'm watching.

Until then, loose body fat. I might add that for myself, I accidentally stopped my metformin when I cut my carbs very low (where you are right now too). I just forgot to take my meds for about 2 days and my blood sugar was still OK. That was 5 years ago. I'm still OK without medication, but just barely.

It is up to you, but the half life of metformin is about 6 hours. So if you take some with supper at 6 pm, by the next morning you have 1/4 of that left, and by noon 1/8 left. They say that after 24 hours metformin has essentially no impact on blood sugar. So if you eat Keto, and watch your blood sugar, like before a meal, and say 2 hours after, you will see where you are with or without that drug.

One of the members of a Keto a Clarity seems to have stopped her sitagliptin, and seems to be doing OK without it.

Thank you James for the information. Is there anything I can do that will stabilize my morning blood sugar reading other than staying on the ketogenic diet?

One of my concerns is that these are the readings taking Metformin twice a day. If I want to get to the point where the readings are good even without the metformin, are there other things I should be doing?

That's a fine number two hours after eating. Have a look at this graph:


Your meter measures glucose, not insulin, so consider the two blue curves. The dark blue one with squares is a "diabetic" glucose curve and the light blue one with triangles is "non-diabetic". The diabetic curve is higher in glucose at all times compared to non-diabetic.

Remember, besides bedtime and waking, the other interesting times were just before you eat (the start of the curve) one hour after finishing eating, the peak of the diabetic curve, and also close to the peak of the non-diabetic curve, and two hours after eating is also interesting.

Two hours (120 minutes) after eating the diabetic curve is still high, about 175, but the non-diabetic curve is just slightly over 100, exactly where you are.

Hope that puts things in perspective.

I have found that a small snack of carbs has helped my morning blood sugar more than anything. I learned about this after reading about "liver dumps". I try to have some crackers, a snack size candy bar, small marshmallow, or small sweet treat every night about 30 minutes before bed time. I am not talking about pigging out here...just a small treat. It's actually a part of the day I have come to look forward to - it's become the first part of my night time routine.

I don't think that spark people wants any liability issues with giving medical advice, so when I looked within spark people I didn't find any suggestions.

But outside of spark people here is a typical table of blood sugar maximums for diabetics for different conditions:

Fasting level, before meal, after meal, etc. The number are for mg/dL. To change to mmol/L just divide those numbers by 18.

Last night FBS was 118 and this AM is 136. I am lowering my numbers through diet and exercise only. I love how SPARK lets you track your BG and print out a graph on how you are doing! I have Drs appointment Wednesday so will know how she feels I am doing at that point emoticon

Hi, I am a 'Newbie!' Trying to control Blood Sugar through diet and exercise. Diagnosed at 252 (Yikes!) Been eating much better and adding more exercise minutes this week this AM pre-breakfast was 126! However, I test 2X daily and fluctuate between 108 and 183 (?). Is this typical? I have only been doing this a week.

Dr wants me below 90 (sigh) . I am having trouble 'balancing' my fats/proteins carbs-does it get any easier??!
