Kings of the Earth by Jon Clinch 5*

This is the story that spans the life of the three Proctor brothers, living all their lives on a primitive farm in upstate New York.
Their story is told in turns by the brothers, their parents, and others in the community. When the story opens, one of the brothers has died in his sleep and the other two are suspected of murder.

Vernon is oldest brother, reduced by work and illness to former shadow of himself. The middle brother is feebleminded Audie, and the youngest, Creed, is the only one to have ever seen the world, thanks to a stint in the U.S. Army.
We also meet Del Graham, the state trooper who is torn between wanting to understand the brothers and his sense of justice; Preston Hatch, the kind and resourceful neighbor who has looked after the brothers all of their lives, and the only sister, Donna, who cut herself loose from the farm years ago but is drawn back in to the family drama.

This a very haunting novel that explores the human condition and the limits that can be endured. The writing is beautifully done. There are no clear cut answers to what happened, but I like that this book really makes you think and lets you draw your own conclusions.

Redeeming Grace by Emma Miller 4*

This is part of the Hannah's Daughters series, which is set in an Amish community in Delaware.

Penniless widow Grace Yoder has no where to turn, and a young son to support, so she travels to the Amish community of Seven Poplars, hoping to reunite with the Plain father she never knew, and join the Amish community. Although her father is deceased, his new family still welcomes her, and Grace is overcome with gratitude. But when a handsome family friend, John Hartman, offers a job in his veterinarian office, Grace is torn between two worlds; John is Mennonite, but if she wants to become part of the Amish church, she cannot have a relationship with him; is there any way to bridge the two worlds?

Even though this part of a series, it works as a stand alone novel. I liked the continuing stories of the other characters from the previous books, especially Susanna, the sister with Down's Syndrome. Her story was featured in this book also. She is now 19, and her family is concerned when Susanna falls in love in with another special needs Amish man; her mother and sisters have to deal with the fact that she is no longer a child, and is dealing with a lot of the thoughts and feelings that come with being a woman. I thought the author handled this topic very thoughtfully and with sensitivity. It is an issue that I'm sure all parents of special needs children eventually deal with, not just the Amish. I look forward to seeing more of Susanna's storyline continued in future books.

Elizabeth Street by Laura Fabiano 4*

This novel was based on true events, in the lives of the author's great grandmother and grandmother. At the heart of the novel is Giovanna, an immigrant from the Scilla region of Italy, who came to the United States around the 1900's after her first husband was killed in a construction accident in Brooklyn. She stays and makes a life for herself in New York, after marrying a second time. When her family is targeted by the "Black Hand", (a precursor of the Mafia), she courageously stands up to them and does whatever she has to to protect her family.

I really enjoyed this novel; it was very descriptive of what it was like to live in New York as an immigrant, and I also learned some things about the Italian culture, both in Italy, and the traditions the Italians brought with them to the U.S. I had to admire Giovanna also; being a woman at that time was hard, let alone the fact that she was also an immigrant and spoke very little English, but she was able to endure and eventually break free of the grip of the Black Hand.

Freshwater Road by Denise Nicholas *****

Fact-based novel of Freedom Summer - the 1964 Mississippi voter registration drive that brought scores of northern college students, both white and black, to the state that at that time epitomized the racism that permeated American society. Celeste is a middle class black (at that time, the politically correct term was Negro) college student from Detroit who gets caught up in the idealism of the moment and volunteers to go to Pineyville, MS and help register black voters to challenge the all-white, hand-picked delegation to the upcoming Democratic National Convention. From the time she steps off the train in Jackson, Celeste finds herself in another world - her grandmother in Michigan had told her of living in shacks with no plumbing (toilets or sinks), libraries closed to black children, having to step off the sidewalk if a white person walked down it, being beaten for simply looking a white person in the eye. Now Celeste finds these were not just stories, they are her new reality. She sets up a 'freedom school' in the local black church - the first time black children have heard anything positive about their history, and starts classes for adults at night on the Mississippi constitution and the laws governing voter registration. Along the way, she is beaten by the town sheriff, the house where she is staying is targeted for night drive-by shootings, and most of her preconceptions about the people she's working with are overturned.

I wasn't there that summer, but a few years later I spent a year in a small town in Alabama, helping open one of the first Head Start programs in the state, and I know that Nicholas wrote from personal experience - the fear and frustration are very real and ring true. The book brought back memories, and also a sense of accomplishment - we've all come a long way.

John Dies at the End by David Wong - 4*

If you are a fan of Sam Raimi films, which mix comedy and horror in equal measure, this is the book for you. It has genuine laugh-out-loud moments (John is one of my new favorite literary characters) and plenty of cringe-worthy ones as well. It is repetitive in parts and contains a lot of vulgar words and toilet humor, so I wouldn't recommend this to everyone, but it is a fun read for fans of Kevin Smith-type humor.

Shiver by Linda Howard *. I listened to the audio book and suffered through 4-5 CDs before abandoning it as it was not worth my time. Killing with sex mixed in and no story line. Characters processed too much information that would not be possible with a gun pointed at you. I was not quite that desperate for a novel to listen to any more.

Fowl Prey by Mary Daheim, One of her Bed-and Breakfast Mysteries. The cousins went on a vacation to Canada and it didn't take long for them to find a dead body and as always want to play detective.

This is one of her earliest books but I have read several later ones. I decided I wanted to read something a little more lighthearted for a while.

Detective Elliot is investigating homicide cases that bear disturbing resemblances to murders that occured when he was at his small town high school. He had briefly been considered a suspect, now he's a Tulsa, OK cop, with nightmares from the previous murders of his best friend.


Three books in the Vicarage Book series by Mimi Barbour - 3 stars each. Magic rose bushes at an old vicarage bench in a small English village cause spirit transfers when 2 people are pricked by the same rose thorns. Romance stories. (BTW, the "empty" bodies appear to be in comas, and are cared for in a hospital)

She's Me is the 1st book - a spoiled model, Jenna, sits on the bench in 2007 and accidentally pricks her finger. She travels back to 1963 to share the body of shy, chubby Lucy. Jenna learns compasion from Lucy, even as Jenna whips Lucy into shape (diet, exercise, makeup and more assertivenss). Lucy loves Dr. John, and, with their friend Dr. Andrews they figure out a way to connect to the future and Jenna's very worried manager, Jake. As he tries to assist Jenna's comatose body, Jake is whisked back to share Dr. John's body in 1963. Talk about star-crossed lovers!

He's Her - book 2 - American businessman Rhett's spirit is forced into the body of schoolteacher Carrie (they both stay in modern times). Fortunately for them, Dr. Andrews is still alive in current times, and he helps them out.

We're One - book 3 Rhett's brother Ashley manages their Las Vegas casino. While Rhett & Carrie visit her folks back in England, Ashley is beaten up by rival thugs & casino managers. Crystal leaps to his rescue, swinging her baseball bat. Ashely has to protect Crytal from the threatened payback, and whisks her away to the vicarage bench in England. His cock-eyed plan is to deliberately get her spirit into his body so he can protect her. Now the thugs are after him. Dr. Andrews once again assists.

Livin' Lahaina Loca (2d book of the Islands of Aloha Mystery series) by JoAnn Bassett 3.5 stars
Maui wedding planner Pali gets involved in the case of the missing bridesmaid. The bride and groom are remarkably blase' about the missing woman. I'd have rated it higher, but the ending was rushed.

Rubies of the Viper by Martha Marks ***

Set in Imperial Rome during the reigns of Claudius and Nero, Theodosia Varro is the daughter of a noble Roman father and a Greek mother (both deceased) who finds herself suddenly wealthy upon the violent murder of her dissolute brother . She retires to her beloved country estate where she is pursued by relentless nobles drooling over the possibility of controlling her vast fortune. Theodosia, however, is in no hurry to relinquish her freedom or new-found wealth, and her two most persistent suitors are either very young or established bullies. Instead, she develops close friendships with two of her estate's hundreds of slaves (if such a thing as 'friendship' can exist between someone deemed property and the property owner), her learned Greek steward and the stable hand she played with as a young girl growing up. As the story develops, Theodosia gets caught up in solving her brother's murder, perpetuating an "enlightened" view of human slavery, and attempting to go beyond the boundaries of accepted behavior for a well brought up Roman lady. The novel was entertaining, and I read it through to the end, but I never bought into the plot - a woman of her background of that time would NOT behave as she did, nor would others respond to her actions the way they did . Kind of like a 60 year old saying "I want to retain all the wisdom and knowledge I've worked so hard to amass, but I want the body and health of a 20 year old again" - ain't gonna happen.

10th Anniversary (Women's Murder Club) by James Patterson -3 stars

10th in the Women's Murder Club series. It actually has at least three major stories going but not a lot of action. It was a quick read but at the end I was left wanting more. Good to read on a plane.

When 69 year old Son-nyo is separated from her husband among the crowds of the Seoul subway station, her family begins a desperate search to find her. Long-held secrets and regrets begin to reveal themselves, and they are forced to wonder, how well did they really know the woman they called Mom?

This story is told in turns by the eldest daughter, eldest son, the husband, and also by Son-nyo herself. It's a very moving, and haunting story, that I will not forget. It's a book that will really make you think about your relationship with your own mother. This book was originally written in Korean, translated into English; it was beautifully done and did not "feel" like a translated book, the story flowed seamlessly and had a poetic feel to it. I admit to getting tears in my eyes towards the end of the book.

Even though the story is set in Korea, the universal theme of mothers and family is something we can all relate to.

Young Adult\Teen - Infinity (Chronicles of Nick #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon 4*

Most likely to interest Dark Hunter fans or teens who have an interested in paranormal fantastical worlds. This is a teen appropriate prequel to the (very adult themed) Dark-Hunter and Dream-Hunter series by Kenyon.

I enjoyed the chance to learn about Nick Gautier's life before he became a Squire, especially since it clearly has a huge bearing on what happened years after he became a Squire in the Dark-Hunter series.

"Classic" New Orleans - Kenyon style.

NonFic - The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick's Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption

This is an amazing book. The first three chapters were very difficult to read, the story of how the dogs were treated and the neglect and even abuse was difficult to read about. So difficult I had to put the book aside for nearly a month, even though I knew a portion of what happened to the dogs after the Vick conviction.

The challenges of the law enforcement officers faced was disheartening but not terribly surprising in a part of the South that revered sports with a fervor that borders on mindless obsession.

Overall this is a carefully and caring account of how difficult a challenge it was to work with the local law enforcement structure and the amazing combination of evidence that helped initiate a novel approach to the follow-on investigations and the handling of the dozens of dogs.

I have a deep admiration for the creativity and depth of caring for these dogs and the amazing judicial order that allowed the dogs to be thoroughly evaluated and placed in foster homes, sanctuaries or in the worst case euthanized (only 1 dog HAD to be put down).

I knew a bit of the aftermath, but I am even more appreciative of the precedent setting work that went into this case. No longer are federal seizures of dogs from fighting rings automatically euthanized on a wholesale basis.

These dogs got to know freedom, love and a home. A few have passed on and a few will never leave their sanctuary homes, but they are in immeasurably better places than they ever experienced before.

Good stories are a staple for Mrs Macomber, this book did not disappoint.

Three young women about to graduate from college were in their college relationships that each ended in disillusion and a new maturity. We spend more time learning about what led them to yet another crossroads and only in the epilogue do we discover how their lives proceeded.

ROM - A Midsummer Night's Sin (Blackthorn Brothers #2) by Kasey Michaels 4*
This is the 2nd in the Blackthorn Brothers Trilogy. A fun 'regency' romance...combined with intrigue, a trio of brothers who were born on the 'wrong side of the blanket'.

A domineering, extremely wealthy merchant looking to gain legitimacy in Society by marrying his daughter to a peer - no less than a baron. His wife was essentially purchased in order for him to marry the daughter of a penniless peer - and he held both sides of 'his' family while pursuing his business.

Adventure takes the guise of white slavery and the retrieval of Regina's cousin who was abducted by the slavers.

The investigations, the connections who 'work for the Crown' and the exceedingly unpleasant revelations about who is behind the abductions made a very good story.

ROM - Much Ado About Rogues (Blackthorn Brothers, #3) by Kasey Michaels 4*
A satisfying end to the Blackthorn Brothers trilogy.

Strong willed man + strong willed woman with history join forces to face their respective families.
Rediscovering each other, discovering the truth about themselves and various family members.

Took full advantage of events from the prior volume as a way to tie up a few of the storylines...but there are some characters that might be appearing in other stories. Or maybe not. I am glad I gave these a shot when I found them at the library.

The Mercy by Beverly Lewis

This book is the conclusion to The Rose Trilogy. Rose Kauffman is still pining for Nick Franco, the Bishop's foster son who left the Amish under a cloud of suspicion, after the death of his foster brother. His rebelliousness led to the "silencing" of the Bishop. Rose's lingering feelings refuse to fade, but she is frustrated that Nick won't return to make things right with the People.

Meanwhile, Rose's sister Hen is still living in their parent's Dawdi haus, caring for her estranged and helpless "Englischer" husband after a car accident. She is still hopeful that their marriage will recover, but is it possible to find any middle ground between the
Amish and the modern world?

I enjoyed this story, although there wasn't much of anything exciting happening in this book, it was a nice conclusion to the series and tied up the loose ends from the other two books.

I finished the McCarthys of Gansett Island series by Marie Force ( there are 7 so far, with another coming out this year). Gansett is an island off the coast of Rhode Island, and the McCarthys are a large, loving, boisterous family with lots of cousins and "almost" brothers (friends). Interwoven are more stories of old and new loves getting together.

4 Gigs of Trouble by Stella Baker 4.5 stars
Ex-Marine MP Toni Teitelbaum is a history teacher at a private school, escorting a rowdy group of high schoolers on a trip to Washington, DC. One student breaks away into the bushes, Toni follows, and they discover a dying man jabbering at them. Toni realizes things don't add up when the police dismiss him as just another vagrant, and then she finds the jump drive in her jacket and gets threatened by unknown people that know an awful lot about her.
This book really made me wonder about quality control on pharmaceuticals from China ..

I enjoyed this story; there is just enough resolution to the storylines to make a satisfying ending, but just enough loose ends left to make the reader look forward to the next book in the trilogy.

Real Food Fermentation by Alex Lewin 4 stars

Instructions recipes and lots of photos for culturing raw foods. A good basic recipe book. This along with Sandor Katz's "Wild Fermentation" make a great book set for novice fermenters. They leave you educated and motivated to do your own thing.
