I've been reading Terry Brooks Genesis of Shannara Series "Armageddon's Children". Its the first book of a three book set in his Shannara series. I have all of his different Shannara series book sets and this is one of my newest and I so enjoy the story. It starts in Seattle after some major problems and devastation of most of the population of the world.

I just finished re-reading the Laundry Series (the Atrocity Archives, The Jennifer Morgue, the Fuller Memorandum) by Charless Stross. He's become one of my favorite authors in a very short time with his combination of world-building, vision and wit. Not to menition amazing characters I totally heart all over. Laundry series is basically "all ifs fair in cold war and lovecraft" - the end is nigh and stale beer flavor british bureaucratic spies get to deal with it.

Small tweak to the Carolly Erickson recommendation -- she started out writing straight biographies, and has moved into historical fiction in recent years. Her fiction is good, but it's the actual biographies where she shines. They are completely factual (footnotes & all), but so entertaining that you feel like you're reading a really good novel. My number one pick is 'The First Elizabeth', but her other Tudor bios are excellent as well (Great Harry, Bloody Mary, and Mistress Anne).
And for you Alison Weir fans, check out Antonia Fraser as well -- lots of Tudor history, and her 'Warrior Queens' absolutely rocks!

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John LeCarre (sp?)--saw the movie (very whoa), gonna read the book now (didn't have time to do it in reverse, my adoration of Benedict Cumberbatch, Gary Oldman, and Colin Firth could not wait any longer).
Also will read "Europa" by J. Sanderlein (sp?), book one of the Black Chronicles (a sci-fi book i picked up at Comicpalooza in June but hadn't had a chance to read yet).

Kearl2 - I discovered Alison Weir a few years back when I saw a special on Henry the VIII. There are a lot of convoluted details surrounding Mary and Lord Darnley. Ms. Weir probably had a frustrating time with this one simply because of the lack of documentation and the abundance of rumors and speculations.
I haven't read Carolly Erickson but I just reserved a biography on Empress Josephine at the library. Thank you for the tip.
Missya72 - I have read several of her books, mostly surrounding King Henry VIII, his wives and his children. She has also written a few historical fiction novels as well.
