That was one that I saw advertised too but it is to celebrate a certain region of Oregon that we are not in, so we did not participate.
I hope you were able to find tasting rooms to visit on your wandering.

Again, THANKS ALL! WINELADY, we did pass a bunch of wineries. We were looking for some type of wine festival I saw advertised for Newburg, but couldn't figure out where it was being held--

@McLeod-I am sorry, but I just saw this thread tonight. I own a winery in Amity, Newberg is about 15 miles up 99W from us. There are a HUGE number of wineries in that area. Some bigger an pricier, some smaller and more intimate. Depends upon what you want. If you google a site called "willamette valley winery association" They have many of the oregon wineries and associated businesses who belong. There is also a printed map you can get for free. Most winery members will have some at their tasting rooms, also wine shops or wine departments at grocery stores will sometimes have them.

Another resource is the Oregon Wine Press, again available locally. They will have a lot of information about wineries and other special events going on in the areas you might visit.

Hope this helps for your next trip.

Jo

Hey EWEFLUFFY, we did also go thru Newberg -- but we couldn't figure out what to do or where to go there, so we ended up with an extra day on the coast. Still, would love suggestions for next time. And Thank YOU, everyone for the Portland suggestions. We didn't get to it this trip, but I sure look forward to explore the city sometime this year.

THANKS EVERYONE! Just got back and I think we did most of the suggestions except the portland activities -- go figure. Thought I'd list the itenerary here just for fun-- We called it the Oregon Mom Tour
DAY 1: Water Fall Day -- Historic Columbia Gorge Hwy
We hiked up/down every one of the those falls. Then turned South at Hood River to visit the fruit tree area.
DAY 2: MT Hood Day -- Spent the night at Government Camp. Toured Timberline Lodge (Forest Services gives a great tour). We had planned to ride the chair lift up and hike down the Miracle Mile at the ski area, but the lift was down for maintanance, so we HIKED the mile up (1000') and down. Very fun.
DAY 3: Coast/Lighthouse Day- Hwy 101 -- Hiked the trails and visited 3 lighthouses
DAY 4-5: Coast/Beach Cape Arago State Park, Face Rock area(Bandon) and the North Bend area
DAY 6: Northern CA and the California Redwoods -- We wished we had more time here!!! The Howland Hills Rd in Jedediah Smith State Park is TRULY amazing. Trees of Mystery (Tram ride into the redwood canopy) was fun to do...once.
DAY 7: Visited Cottage Grove-- very cute town and then on to Willamette Valley Winery for the afternoon.
Anyway, GREAT TRIP. Thanks for everyone's help.

I hope your friend is spending some time here. Check out the website for Joy Creek Nursery in Scappoose. They have all their plants planted in the ground. It is very nice to see what the fully grown plants will look like. She might be interested in the Japanese Garden near the zoo in Portland. It is suppose to be the best Japanese Garden outside of Japan. I also like the little Chinese Garden in downtown Portland. Sorry for posting so late.

PS: The Rose Garden was still spectacular two weeks ago. It is next to the Japanese Garden. Pioneer Square is fun if you like people watching. Parking and driving downtown is tricky. You might want to park at Lloyd Center and take the MAX train into downtown.

There are a LOT of wineries in western Oregon... Most of them are open during the days, especially on weekends. Some give tours, most all have tasting rooms, some don't charge, some do.
The Willamette Valley winery just south of the Enchanted Forest, south of Salem is a nice winery with a good view (excellent wines too). If your down here in Lane County, there is Sweet Cheeks, Hinman/Sylvan Ridge, Chateau Lorane and several others as well.
You can probably go online and check out wineries in Oregon, I'm guessing you'll find a bunch with hours, etc.
Hope that helps... If your in North Bend, the ones here in Lane County wouldn't be too far for you.. Maybe just google; Lane county Wineries.

thank you everyone for responding! I have lived in North Bend(next to Coos Bay) for the about 2 years, so I'm still learning my way around. Heard of the Portland Rose Garden, but have never been there -- is it downtown? Also is Pioneer square worth a visit?

Also Newberg-- isn't that a winery area? Where do they give the tour of the vineyards? any one know know which wineries would be best to visit?

Raregem, Newberg is about 80 miles from Eugene - north... We are right on I-5. It takes me about an hour and a half to go from here to Woodburn outlet mall... Winchester Bay is over on the coast, thats probably close to 100 miles from here - you have to go to the coast, then south to get to Winchester Bay. It's a pretty hopping place when the salmon are running. My Dad used to fish down there.
What's near Eugene? Well, we've got Florence on the coast about 65 miles to the west and the top of the Cascades (McKenzie Pass) which is about 70 miles to the East - that is a beautiful road, but only open during the summer. No big attractions right here in Eugene, the University of Oregon I guess...
But, it's a nice place to live. I've lived around here most of my life except for about 12 years I lived down in Los Angeles.

Ewefluffy, I live in Newberg, I do know where Eugene is, been there one time and it is a drive. Are there areas to see around there??. I know there is Winchester bay and always wanted to visit there. I might have to do that, but it will have to be in the spring or summer months of next year. This year it's impossible as I will be in college and have lack of funds to go too far.

In Portland, they have the Oregon Zoo and OMSI to visit (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry). Its interesting. Also if you are there on a Saturday we have Portland Saturday Market near SW Morrison St. Bridge.
Just an idea.
Newport (coast) has Oregon Coast Aquarium. Lots of beautiful beaches along the way also. Florence has wonderful sand dunes, too.
Look at them online before you decide.

I would love to go on some of the outings for the exercise and the beauty, but I am always by myself and I don't like to always do these things by myself. I don't seem to have any support outside the internet.

Good Morning.. According to the Eugene Register Guard this morning, Hwy 242 is still closed because of the smoke, etc. in the area I think is the reason. So, be sure and check with ODOT before you go over that direction. Or you can to go to Tripcheck.com and usually get pretty much up to date information on the different roads around Oregon.

On the way back you can take Hwy 101 back up north to Reedsport and head east on Hwy 38 that goes along the umpqua river. Goes by the Elk reserve and some old towns of Scottsburg, Greenacres, Elkton (where I grew up), Drain and hit I-5 again.

Always a good idea to check for fire closures before you ruin a trip. It was all open from brietenbush lk. south last weekend. At least in the back country.

Hi way 242, the old Mackenzie pass. People from other areas are always amazed by the scenery up there. If this is too far afield, a trip to timberline lodge on Mt. Hood be sure to go thru the old lodge. It was built by the civilian conservation corps during the last depression quite amazing.

Hello, My BFF will be visiting Oregon from Mississippi in a week. I'll pick her up in Portland, do the coast down to Bandon then up I-5 back to Portland -- What are the must do stops? She owns a greenhouse and landscaping business, so I want to tour some of those around here and hit a few wineries as well as enjoy the coast -- But I don't know portland very well... All ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Everyone.
