It's kind of personal preference. But from an athletes perspective, I have a hard time working out at the intensity I wish to without having eaten anything, especially protein before hand.

From a fat loss perspective it really doesn't matter.

What matters most is what you are eating, not when you are eating it.

I try to eat a healthy dinner the night before a major workout (like a one-hour class at the gym) because eating right before I exercise makes my tummy upset.

Then, after class, I make sure to eat a high-protein meal and LOTS of water.
but that's what works for me--everyone's different. My workout buddy eats small meals before and after.

I have oatmeal with almonds, cinnamon & bluberries a hour B4 a work out and then immediately after a slice of turkey and small fruit...lots of water B4, during and after. PS... Bananas are very high glycemic, they spike your blood sugar so I don't eat them... emoticon

Spark People suggests eating something up to 30 minutes after exercising.

Me, personally, as a diabetic, I ahve something before exercising like a Banana or juice or even something sweet because I can get a really low blood sugar spell. Bananas also give me energy.

To each their own.
