My immediate plan is to go on a 11K Volkswalk on May 17 in Portland. The walk called the Alexandra Bridge Walk and starts at REI Downtown, 1405 NW Johnson St. If you are interested there is more information at
www.walkoregon.org
Just click on 'walks' from the home page and it will give you a list of dates and locations for some upcoming walks.

Don't think about what you CAN'T do, think about what you CAN do.

Ok, I have figured out my next organized walk and it will be April 11, 2009 at Cook's Park. It's called a "reason to Run", but walkers are welcome. Here is the info on it:

Reason to Run

Our spring races are the Rush 10 km and the Burst 5 km. Both start at 8:30 am on April 11, 2009 in Cook Park, Tigard, Oregon. We have a kid's run for the younger runners.

Burst: To emerge, come forth, or arrive suddenly.

The 5 km will start at 8:30 am on April 11, 2009. We will begin on the road within Cook Park (SW 92nd) and follow the Tualatin River to the boat launch. You then enjoy a section of bark mulch trail for about 1/4 mile. The fun continues on the paved bike path towards the Ki-a-Kuts pedestrian bridge and over the Tualatin River.

After an out and back in Tualatin Community Park you will head back over the bridge and over into Durham City Park for more paved bike path.
After a "lollipop" out and back you will return to Cook Park and the finish line on the paved trail past the Butterfly Garden and on the east side of the soccer fields.

The course is great for those going for a fast time or those who are just out to enjoy the time on their feet in beautiful surroundings.

Fees:
* 5 km: $35 thru March 18th; $40 thru April 9th.
* 10 km: $35 thru March 18th; $40 thru April 9th.
* 1/2 mile Kid's Run: $10

A portion of our proceeds will go to Life Vocational Training for street kids in Honduras.

Well, I did my walk on Saturday and did the 5 miles in an hour and a half. If I figured it out right, that's 18 minutes per mile. Don't know if that is good or not, but it works for me.

This weekend I have the Shamrock Run - which I am doing the fitness stride. I am looking forward to it. It is only 3.5 miles. I've started looking around to see what organized walk I can find for April. emoticon

I've kept track of steps since 6/08. I just walked what I could. I'm a desk jockey - so I have to think about getting up and moving. On 1/09 my goal was 10,000/day. I have meet my goal all but 6 days.
On, 6/09 - I will increase to 12500 steps. I love to see the pedometer move, whether I'm on the treadmill or just walking. emoticon

Good luck to all! emoticon

I agree with ORLIBERTY music that sets the pace makes the walking easier, and more intertaining. ZZ top Tush or Legs is a perfect beat for me, every time the drum beat strikes, so does my left heel. (its a Marine thing)Gurf Morlix is also a good pace to walk to.

A metronome is a tempo device that amplifies a beating sound to the beat of the music. They were and still are a unit that sits on top of a piano for lessons. Due to technology, they now make them digitally so that they are compact and portable.

I hate when my pedometer resets. It is extremely sensitive and not the easiest interface to reprogram.

ORLIberty, what is a digital metronome? Is that new.

As for my walk, I did the 5 mile walk today and feel pretty accomplished. Unfortunately my pedometer reset itself somewhere along the walk, so I'll have to figure out how many actual steps I did. emoticon

I walk on the treadmill daily using a playlist on my Ipod that I developed. It is an interval speed workout that starts out with 2.8 mph playing Every Step You Take by Police. At 3.5 mph I'm halfway with Cold as Ice by Foreigner, moving back down and ending with Crazy by Gnarls Barkley at 3.0 mph. It's a 45 minute workout worth 240 calories and 2.4 miles. I want to make more playlists so that I don't get bored but I'm waiting for my digital metronome to arrive so I can easily choreograph the next ones.

Get in what you can when you can! I have resorted to two periods of cardio daily. I walk in the basement of the building I work in early before work and hit the park after. I did 12 miles today, two 6 mile splits and feel great. That amounts to 1396 calories burned for the day. I walked every day in February and it added up to 190 miles with 22,000 calories burned. I can feel the difference! I don't jiggle when I walk anymore!! I have battled shin splints, but have continued through the discomfort, also more than a few blisters, but all is better now. Keep plugging along at whatever pace suits you, but challenge yourself occasionally, push your limits and feel proud of the fact that you are making a difference in yourself

Alice it sounds like you are doing great with your steps. I work at a desk and get so involved that I do not move a lot. Right now I am trying to hit 5000 a day and magage usually 2000-5000. Once spring comes, I hope to do more as I will walk around my work campus daily. :) I am a fair weather walker.

My goals aren't near as lofty as most of yours. I try to take a thirty minute walk everyday and i use a pedometer to log all my steps and I'm working towards at least 10,000 steps a day. The highest I've gotten so far is 9250 steps.

Good luck everyone.

Just a reminder that I am doing the Shamrock Run event (but actually doing the fitness stride not the run itself) if anyone wants to join me.

I have a team, which makes it a little cheaper.

Team name: Walking the Weight Away
Team Leader: Michelle Dodge

I thought about a treadmill, or gym membership, but you lose too much ambiance from not being outdoors. I walk at North Clackamas park, and see wildlife of some sort every time I walk. The crisp cool mornings or the feel of rain on your face is a good thing. Get some lighgt weight raingear, frogtoggs or gore-tex and the weather isn't so bad.

I go to the mall every morning at 6 AM and walk at least 2 1/2 miles each time... I have a walking partner and so that helps to keep me motivated to make it every morning except the weekends, I do take those two days off.

If anyone would like to join me, I just signed up for the Shamrock Run. WWW.shamrockrunportland.com. I created a group called Walking the Weight Away and put myself as the team leader: Michelle Dodge. I signed up for the 3.5 mile fitness stride, though, not the run. emoticon

It is about $4 cheaper. If you sign up online, they do charge a service fee of about $2. There is a form you can mail in, but it has to be postmarked by March 9th.

If I keep walking I won't rust. 76 this year. Gave up my car so it would force me to walk each day. I average 1 to 2 miles a day. When it's really cold or icy I just climb up and down stairs in the apartment complex I live in.

Ok, seems everyone who responded cannot go on the walk, so I am cancelling it. If you didn't respond and were planning on going, sorry. I will post another walk soon for our area.:)

Looking pretty wet today. I just decided to wait and see if I can catch a break before heading out to the mailbox... guess I'm going to pass on tomorrow. Please let me know about other area walks/hikes though. Thanks for the links... I'm checking into them and looking at my schedule.

I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see.

Water is very important for us. We may, and I do, require more than the 8 glasses a day. The link goes to a water calculator I use to see what I need for my current weight. Mt requirement has dropped 9 ounces due to weight loss. Yipee!

Just talking with hubby how I would like to go back to Silver Falls. Unfortunately, we have a show ( for our Cookie Lee Jewelry business) Sat and Sun in Portland, so we wouldn't be able to do it. Bummer! Maybe some other time. ( We live in Salem).

Have fun.

Love to go but youngest son is in a b-ball tourney. I haven't done the big circle since turkey day. Hope you have good weather it looks a little wet. Post one the next time you go. I plan on doing some hikes in the santiam canyons this spring and will post them. Next week I am plenning two mid- week hikes since I am between jobs at the moment. Will post specifics later. maybe we can get Karen to enjoy some Oregon sunshine too.

I would love links to the organized walks you mentioned, and I love Silver Falls. I am, however, a fair weather hiker... doesn't have to be sunny, just not pelting rain.

So I have set a goal for myself to join in one organized walk at least every other month and try to walk a couple miles on a weekend at least one time a month. I am starting out small as I am not walking at all. I am the administrator for "Somewhere between Portland and Salem" and posted there as well.

I am looking to do a walk/hike at Silver Falls in Silverton, Oregon on Saturday, February 7th. It is a little over 8 miles, so I thought a partial walk/hike could be done for those that cannot make it the whole way.

I'd like to do hikes/walks in various areas a couple times a month. Preferably fee, though I will be posting others that may cost. In March I will be doing Shamrock Stride on the 15th ($29) and a walk in Champoeg Park through OCCR ($10). In May I am doing making Strides Against Breast Cancer. I figure if I pay, I will go for sure. :) A weird motivator, but for me it works.

If anyone in the area wants to go with me on Saturday, I'm thinking about 10a-11a, contact me. It would be great to have buddy to walk with.
