She's really happy, 117 downloads from Smashwords by this morning, just over 24 hours. She was hoping for maybe 100 in the first month.

Now I've found my notebook I shall be trying to outdo her, of course.

Daughter has just published her first book, a novella entitled Away With The Fairies - under her full name Felicity Knight. It's a comic fantasy, should be live on Amazon in a few hours, and it's free.

We're still not well. Richard phoned Monday for an appointment to see his doctor again and was told to call back again Wednesday and they might be able to fit him in on Friday, so that's what he's done. He did get a full niight's sleep last night without waking up with a coughing fit, but he's been coughing like my grandfather used to. I'm still very wheezy too. Our baby grandson also is coughing and wheezing, but the doctor reckons obviously it's a virus as he said there's nothing he can give him. Fee is doing another on-line grocery order for us and is also having to cope with the children all on her own when her husband is at work. Usually we'd be there helping, but I don't think Richard is fit to drive apart from anything else.

Think not. Do.

Sorry to hear you haven't been well, Doreen. I hope you're both better now.

Also sorry for the late reply - it's been completely insane around here ever since we got back from the race. I don't understand how you can be away from work for three business days and come back to two weeks' worth of work!

It's been bitterly cold around here for the past week, with temperatures getting down close to -30 C. I feel so sorry for the dogs, as their walking has been hit and miss. We tried to walk them yesterday without the boots (which they hate), but we only made it about a quarter of a mile and had to turn back because they were both starting to limp.

Thanks. We're still coughing a lot. Daughter has arranged a shopping delivery from Tesco for both of us, though, so we shall survive on what's in the freezer and what's coming.

Not been well since we got back from our break. Got over the tummy bug quite quickly, and after all that eating out I thought not eating anything for 36 hrs was not a bad thing althogether. Since then though we've both got some sort of chest infection, and Richard actually admits to being ill which is unlike him.

Sounds as if you had a great time - yes, do it again.

We're just back from a short break with daughter and her family at Longleat Center Parc. We had a great time although we fitted in too much really - it was Monday to Friday, and we had: a spa and treatment afternoon for me and Fee followed by the lakeside firework display; a day at the pool with everyone plus one son in for a day and couple of nights (we put him on the guest list for the spare bed) a trip with said son to see Richard's Dad, dropping Andy off for his afternoon shift and seeing other son, then into Salisbury for Pizza Express, the switching on of the Christmas lights and another firework display. Even waking up on Friday with a tummy bug couldn't spoil it.

Good job I got my word count in before we went away, as I didn't have time to think about anything else.

Think not. Do.

Great to hear you came in early with your novel, Doreen! You must feel so proud of yourself! emoticon

Just got back from the Formula One race in Austin, Texas. My cousin and his wife (from the Conwy Valley) arranged to meet us there. What a FABULOUS time we had! I haven't laughed that much in ages. Proud to say I also got in a load of exercise and did not overeat while I was away (travelling is one of my "danger" areas as far as that's concerned).

They want us to meet them again for another race next year, so I'm bound and determined to be at goal weight by the time that comes about.

Had a great girls' afternoon out with Fee on Sunday. It may be the last one for a little while, as she has her consultant's appointment next Wednesday which will probably mark the start of the back-and-forth to Shrewsbury for her. The guest speaker read some very amusing bits of her work, and had some autographed books to sell, and the other readers thoug a mixed bunch were kindly received. The next one is all sorted, with a creative writing group not ours providing the readings, but I'm thinking by the time the one after that arrives, as they are every other month, I might have got far enough with my book that it will be worth while giving an extract. All publicity helps.

Sorry to hear about your gall bladder, Doreen. I had mine out several years ago, and I was SO glad I did. It got to the point where one chicken wing would put me in hospital. Don't get me started on the Canadian medical system, though... emoticon

How did the literary afternoon go?

I spent my Sunday walking the pups, trying my hand at Pilates with one of the SparkPeople videos, and making a present for my cousins in Liverpool. They're heading to Disneyland Paris next month, so I programmed them an online countdown page with a different picture and trivia blurb for each day. My cousin and her adult daughter LOVED it! They can't wait to show my cousin's 5-year-old today! He's my little mate - completely fabulous - a little old man in short pants.

Still not feeling wonderful, I've a pain in the region of my gall bladder, though the doc says the gallstone I have is not of a size to give trouble - too large to get stuck, too small to block the whole thing up.

Going to a literary afternoon at the Magic Lantern cinema in Tywyn this afternoon with my daughter (she writes too, except for having a small child and another on the way). First part is a workshop on short stories which we're giving a miss. The second part will be a reading from the author giving the workshop, followed by an open mike session. This is the first time I've been able to go for ages, it always seemed to coincide with the novel writing weekends in St Davids. And it's just occurred to me - when I get the book out, I can ask to be the featured author and get myself some more publicity. I've read some of my flash fiction there at open mike sessions, and they seemed to like them (I always chose amusing ones). And I know just the section to read out. I have a cunning plan.

Think not. Do.

Hi Doreen:

LOVELY! I love historical romances! I'm looking forward to reading yours.

Sorry to hear you're not feeeling well. I've been up and working since before 6 a.m. - not my choice - the pups decided I'd spent far too long in that bed. emoticon

Nah, SCUBAMUM, it's a Regency Romance. Or if I get my butt in gear, a series or two. I'm afraid the way I lost weight is just diet and exercise. And getting Type 2 diabetes at one stage.

Feeling blah today. Headachy, pain in my side, and unsettled. Don't know what I want to do, but it's none of the things I have in front of me. Can't seem to work up enthusiasm for anything. Maybe I should go and have a nap.

Sut mae, all:

This is my first proper post since I joined your team. Thanks very much for having me. emoticon

I actually joined several weeks ago, but headed off to a week long conference in California immediately after. Then, my parents came to visit (they live on the west coast of Canada). Between that and trying to keep up with work, I haven't been giving SparkPeople the attention it deserves lately. I'm getting back on track, though; so, expect to hear from me more often.

Doreen, I'm fascinated about the book you're writing. Will I find out more about it if I read your blogs? I'd love it if it was a "how to" book about how you lost 50 lbs! emoticon

I hope you enjoy your trip to Cardiff for your granddaughter's first communion, Pat. I've only been to Cardiff a couple of times (my old "stomping ground" was the Conwy Valley), but I really enjoyed it. It's a beautiful city.

JulBel, it sounds like you and I will be going on holiday around the same time. One of the things I'm going to be doing is scuba diving in the Living Seas tank in Walt Disney World. First you do a quick tour, then you get changed into your wetsuit, then THEY PARADE YOU THROUGH THE CROWD OF TOURISTS LOOKING INTO THE AQUARIUM before you get into the tank. If that's not motivation to drop a stone, I don't know what is! emoticon

Off to St David's on Saturday for the final weekend of a course from Aberystwyth Uni on writing that novel. It's been a great year, very motivating, and all the others on the course are so nice. They've set up a group that meets informally from time to time in Fishguard, and I really want to go along some time even though it's quite a long way.

Very glad Fee is feeling better. Yes she will feel weak after all that vomiting. It is always the way, when one appliance goes another follows. Keeping my fingers crossed that all ours are ok for a while now after replacing kettle, fridge freezer and microwave this year. Hubby pointed out that the car may need replacing soon, horrified only had it ten years lol. emoticon

Fee is definitely feeling better now, but from lying in bed in a darkened room for so long is feeling weak and is now worrying about gestational diabetes. They tested her for it last time and she was borderline, but I think it's mainly lack of muscle tone myself, same as you get after a bout of flu.

Richard's Dad has gone into a nursing home, so we had to go down for 3 days last week to help sort out the bungalow. He seems to have settled well, it's a BUPA home so quite expensive, but at least it doesn't smell of wee. He has the option of having a tray in his room if he doesn't want to go to the dining room, but he has found at least one old chap who was in the RAF in the war, so they have been swapping war stories. And he has new hearing aids. One has broken down already, but the other seems to be an improvement on the last one, so we no longer have to shout at him.

The day before we went, a Sunday of course, my cooker broke down - the oven stopped working. But we have got another being delivered tomorrow, and in the meantime have been using the top oven. The cooker was there when we moved in, and was nowhere near new then, so we knew we were on borrowed time with it. At least the new one will have legible oven temperatures. The old one had them printed onto the fascia, and of course over time and with all the scrubbing they'd completely worn off. We're giving it to Matthew's parents who mostly use the Raeburn, but have an even older and more worn out one than ours as a backup. One of the rings at least has a switch that reads off when it's really on, and vice versa, it's a wonder they haven't burned the house down yet.

Think not. Do.

If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.

Fee is now worrying that she's not sick enough, because last time it came just before the miscarriage. You can't win, can you? I don't think there's any need to worry, she's just managing her blood sugar levels a bit better. She still looks rough, and she can't watch tv or use a computer because looking at the screen makes her worse, so now she's complaining of boredom.

William is a bundle of energy like most 2-year-olds. He does have the occasional tantrum - the work "no" is not his favourite, and like my own sons, I think he gets frustrated when he can't communicate. But mostly he's a lovely little chap. He's getting a bit heavy for me to pick up, I think I should be going to the gym and doing strength exercises.

Think not. Do.

Pat, eating anything early in the morning just makes her sick. Sometimes even drinking slightly flat lemonade (recommended by the doctor for among other things tummy bugs when you can't keep anything down) makes her sick. However she has been feeling a little better for a couple of days, and she puts it down to trying to eat a little more in the evening, of things which are slow carbs or protein. That way it's not compounded by low blood sugar which she is prone to at the best of times. She's about 9 weeks at the moment, so we've got a way to go still.

This afternoon we took William to the play barn, so we're hoping he'll want to go to bed a bit earlier.

Think not. Do.

If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.

The doctor has given her more time off work. She also said that part of her problem is that her blood sugar levels may be low and that's why she's so sick. She suggested Fee eat something immediately she wakes up in the morning. Er ... tell me again, why is it referred to as morning sickness?

We haven't suffered too much with the wind, we have stone walls mostly, though there was a branch down on the road this morning on our way to take William to playgroup. And Richard thought there had been a little bit of snow yesterday morning. It's jolly cold though. He thinks the sockets must have got a bit of damp in them, as they seem to be working now, with the hairdryer at least. It's good not to have to bring the washing with us when we come.

Fee has an appointment with the doctor this afternoon to get signed off for another month. Richard will have to drive her in as she has taken her car off the road for a bit to save on the tax and insurance.

Think not. Do.

I had to laugh at your post, a unique use of toothpaste. Hope your sockets are sorted now. How are you coping with this wind? We are lucky to have no more snow but we will need some new fencing. emoticon

Malcolm is very useful at decorating, gardening and making and repairing all sorts of things BUT electric is a no go area, he is hopeless and I think he would blow us up. He does not even seem to understand that water and electric do not mix. emoticon

I think Richard might be coming round to the thought of an electrician now that son-in-law has said he should. Men, they stick together don't they?

Oh get an electrician in Doreen, it is cheaper than new appliances, and much safer. Can you call the guy who did the rewire, it should be guaranteed. My microwave, kettle and fridge freezer have all packed in in the last few weeks, expensive without counting the food we had to throw out. Keep safe and well. Best wishes to Fee emoticon

Yes, Fee was quite subdued for a bit, not like her at all. Now she's feeling sorry for herself, but actually the sickness is a good sign, not that I would ever tell her that in case she hit me. It seems to be normal for her to feel really bad, and she wasn't like that just before the miscarriage. Matthew - well it's not so real for a father until it starts showing and moving around, I think.

Our washing machine is messing us around. For a while it would trip the trip switch every time we tried turning it on, even when we moved the plug to a different socket. We were just on the point of getting another machine from eBay when Richard turned on the tumble drier and it wouldn't work at all. We thought we were jinxed, until he put the plug in a different socket and it worked. So he tried the washing machine on an extension lead from the kitchen and that's working again now. My worry is that there's something wrong with the socket; although we had a complete rewire before we moved in, that position had a socket before with an ominous brown burn mark around it. He doesn't want to get an electrician in though.

Think not. Do.

If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.

Today we have lovely sunshine, I'm sending Richard out with William for a little walk, although it's still very muddy underfoot.

I haven't been on the threads for a while, so I don't think I've said that Fee had a miscarriage in early December, but she's pregnant again now, and suffering badly from morning sickness again. So we are looking after William when Matthew can't - today he's working all day. I've taken to bringing my laptop with me, as I found I had over 80 unread emails yesterday.

Think not. Do.

Thanks Pat. Laziness is my biggest problem!! Still haven't got into a routine and not logging all my walking minutes etc.
Off to Dubai tomorrow, so hopefully will spend more time 'sparking' over the next 3 weeks.
Hope you're keeping well.

Back home after a weekend in Leeds, stayed in a hotel right by the Armouries so had a couple of looks. I just loved the children's armour, can just imagine a pair of brothers aged 8 and 10 having a good go at each other in their armour, and those miniature figures in armour, sort of mediaeval Action Man. Nothing changes.

Hi everything has gone great today, i had a good workout aswell. yesterday i started a team called Celebrity Slim Team, as i couldnt find a team relating to this diet. I've been on this diet 2 weeks this time, the first week i lost 5lb and that was without exercise. I have been on this diet before, i lost 2 stone then, so i thought i would lose the rest of my weight with the same approach.....

you haven't got to do it, you get to do it!!!

We've been down to Salisbury to visit our sons. I was really impressed with the way they have cleaned and tidied the house, and done some diy as well. Couldn't unblock the drain this time though, so we had to call in the drain man. Richard always blamed the children for tipping stuff down, but he's finally admitted that it's probably the way it goes round 2 right angles creating little eddies and dead areas where stuff gets deposited. (See my old blog about Richard's last attempt to clear it himself)

Think not. Do.

Yes it's a nice pool and only a Council one too. He's got cuteness down to a fine art. We were called in today at the last minute again. Matthew has a chance to do some casual work with a trail biking setup. He's a real petrolhead and does much of his own maintenance and repairs, though he's more into vintage machines. I hope it works out for him, they are offering a decent hourly rate, though it's a lot of weekend work so we'll probabky be needed even more often.

William was 1 in October. They can go to the pool here from 6 months, when they can sit unaided. Fee is right about it being a 2-person job taking him though.

Something new since I went swimming last - they seem to have a heated floor in the changing room. Feels wonderful! And if you drop your underwear, the floor is generally dry. I love that pool.

These things hit when I'm at a low ebb. Son's ex is taking herself and their son (6) to live in the US, where she is to marry an American. They're going on the 28th of this month. It's an awful long way if anything goes wrong.

We didn't have much extra in for Christmas but rationed ourselves, so it still took a while to eat it all.

Had some sort of virus yesterday, but feeling better today thank goodness. Fun way to lose a few pounds - not!

Christmas is over, finished the last of the cake teatime, so no more temptation. It is silly really but can not have Christmas without chocolates, cake etc. Now I am determined that 2012 is the year I get healthy, hope you will all join me in making this the most successful year yet emoticonemoticon

Took William to his playgroup again yesterday, he's moving at a good speed now he's crawling. We made a rather lopsided star out of bendy stuff, to put on the Christmas tree.

If it's tiring it must be exercise, and shopping is definitely tiring!

we got snowed in at my sisters in Aberfan, no problem when we finally managed to get out of the village. The valleys always get it bad. At least it is mild now and hope it doesn,t get too cold. I love to look out the window though and I had my own winter wonderland. Why can,t we have safe, warm snow emoticon

We found last year that the problem wasn't with the road - we're right on an A road - it was getting the car on and off the driveway!

Good concert yesterday, Richard wants everyone to know he didn't go to sleep.

yes very exotic Angela, glad you are having fun, that is what life is about. A sunny day today so you may be lucky, forecast is mild. One of my daughters thinks we are having it too good and snow will be with us soon. Have booked the Village hotel this year for our xmas visiting, we can have Tasha with us, if it does snow they usually clear the M4 , better than getting snowed in in Aberfan lol.

Sounds a lot more exotic than what I've been doing!

Actually I prefer big orchestras and Romantic music, but you take what you can get out here.

Hi Pat and everyone, been absent for past couple of weeks. Left Swansea 7.25am on the 2nd of November and flew to Dubai that afternoon, then to Johannesburg in the early hours of November 4th. Made our flight to Hoedspruit by the skin of our teeth, then enjoyed 10 fantastic game drives in Thornybush, near Kruger. Our return visit there was superb!! Flew back to Jo'berg early afternoon on the 9th, staying there for two nights, before flying back to Dubai yesterday afternoon. Our flight was an hour late leaving, so eventually landed in Dubai 1.30am local time (we're now 4 hours ahead of UK). I'm spending the week here now before heading back home to the wet weather.
Hope you all have a good weekend and that the rain has stopped.
emoticonAngela

oh do enjoy your concert. I took Malcolm to St Davids hall in Cardiff, He is not fussy either. The best ever was a concert in the Palau du Musica in Barcelona, which has about the best acoustics in the world. The National Orchestra of Russia playing Strauss, fantastic. When I lived in Barcelona you could go along at the last minute and could be lucky to get an unused or cancelled seat very cheap, could not have gone otherwise. emoticon

Absolutely. I hope we're through that stage now. Richard seems to be fine, I'm nearly back to normal, appetite not wonderful yet but at least I'm eating, and tomorrow we're going out to a concert. Mid Wales Chamber Orchestra, so it's brave of Richard to go with me as music's not really his thing. I think it comes from never having very good hearing, but he'll go anywhere with me for the company. And I've ordered a cordless mouse from Amazon which will save on the tangle of wires round the computer. Just got to arrange dellivery of the spare car now.

Think not. Do.

Actually it is not, the small niggles add up, especially if you are not feeling very well. My sister is quite wise, she once said we cope with ill health and bereavement and the kettle blows up and we go to pieces. It is the straw that breaks the camels back, or lots of niggles can be very stressful. Love to you all emoticon
