Today's spin story... I figure only spinners would understand (and hopefully relate)..

I was about 10 minutes into the class, finally breaking a good sweat, when I felt something itchy as heck on my hip (I wear a cycling short liner under my gym shorts) After ignoring it for another 5 minutes, I pulled out a dryer sheet. The gang had a good laugh. Figured y'all may as well. :-)

I tried a spin class my daughter brought me to at the health club. It was the best workout I have ever had. BUT I left the club singing " I kissed a girl and I liked it". LOL, which doesn't match up to my being on the very conservative side of life. I was really excited that I was able to get a "Black Friday Sale" on a spin bike. I was consistent but just fell away once I went back to work after 23 years. Now I am trying to balance work and home. Then I tried "TABATA cycle", and got my but kicked so bad, (I only lasted 15 minutes) and I have not exercised since then. Its been about 4 months. So today is Day 1 (11-1-13) I am back in the saddle!

Spinning is the one activity that I do so competently that I feel like a beast, like an athlete!
I bought my own Johnny G spinner many years ago and still ride it all the time. Just did a Spin DVD today, in fact, called Pedal Power. Awesome 50 minute hill climb, great for endurance.

be blessed, and be a blessing, Sue

I'm an instructor and I took a class last week that was so bad I only lasted 15 minutes. Popcorn jumps, riding at a cadence of 150 RPM with NO resistance on the flywheel. I was so pissed that the instructor was allowed to teach that when I got home I tested out for my Star Level 2 certification. 1st attempt 96%.

Cross-training shoes are a good alternative also if you don't want to splurge on official cycling shoes. They have a good stiff sole which is what you need in order to keep your foot flat while cycling. It truly does make a difference! :) Either way, you'll notice a difference in a good way and your regular running shoes/sneakers will last longer! They get broken down during cycling from all the pressure of your foot curving around the pedal. Best of luck!

Love spin, but for some reason I've been wanting to duck it! Haven't, thank goodness, but the feeling is there just the same. Sometimes I feel I have to mentally prepare for the class. Again, I LOVE spin and every time I do it it's great, but lately there have been times where I feel I'm not exactly wanting the rigor of it. It can be grueling and I suppose I dread putting myself through that emotion, if you will. Working on myself to get my head around these feelings to mainly get over them! I don't want to have any kind of resistance with it. Just want to enjoy the ride.... emoticon

STAY ON TRACK! YOU CAN DO IT!

I remember back in Nov when I went to my first spinning class it was awful. My bottom hurt my legs hurt and not even a half an hour through the class I wanted to quit. I didnt go again til after a few months. I would only go once every other week. I couldnt get the hang of it. But with determination and the instructors being so friendly and motivating I decided to give it more time. That was the best decision I made I love spinning. Im now attending spinnning class 3 times a week. My heart has gotten much stronger and my saddle bags are almost gone.

this is my 6th week spinning...love it...I'm hooked....at first had the pain in the tailbone...now it is gone...have noticed the impovement in the way clothes fit, & the more toned appearance, not only on my legs, but arms and face as well....attend a 1 hour class at 5;30 am 4 days per week...occasionally make it sunday am.. emoticon I have learned that if i do situps on the ball- 3 sets of 20 before spin class- that i have better form in the working with keeping a tight core when hovering...now i just need to get the spin shoes...someone in class said it makes all the difference on the upturn of the pedal. i never thought i would do this...some days are better than others in terms of keeping up with the teacher....i just do the best that i can...have 25# to go...seem to be at a plateau right now with weight loss...any suggestions?

My story is from my one and only spin class a couple years ago. My boyfriend and I both were members at this gym, and we both decided to take a spin class. We both figured we'd do alright, me because I was a regular exerciser, my boyfriend because he has a cycling background.

Although the instructor knew we were newbies (she helped us adjust our bikes), she didn't provide guidance/modifications to make it easier for us. And we were just overconfident (stupid?) and prideful enough to throw caution to the wind and go all out. And so we both ended up with extremely sore quads for about a week afterwards. My boyfriend blamed the equipment and the instructor and still has no interest in trying spinning again. I continued to be unimpressed with the fitness instructors at this gym (we eventually cancelled our memberships), but thought I might have a better experience if I'd taken it at my own pace.

Fast forward to today: I just purchased a combo passport at my local recplex that's good for 5 spinning classes and 5 other group exercise classes. I'm looking forward to trying spinning again, but this time with my last experience in mind, andknowing I'm going to take it at my own pace! I'm not going to worry about keeping up with the instructor or other students, and I'm definitely not going to worry about rising from the saddle!

Wish me luck!

Update:
I went to a spin class last week at the recplex. Only me and one other student, so that was nice. I did fine, and I know I can push harder next class. My only complaint is that I couldn't always hear the instructor because the music was rather loud.

Spinning has done amazing things for me. Last July I had just turned 50 and had a stroke. I was also close to 300 pounds. I started Spinning and eating correctly, not starving myself and now down to 238. My overall health has improved drastically. I owe most of it to Spinning. When I am off, I hit the Spin classes minimum of 4 days per week. I also purchased a Spin bike to use at home, along with various DVDs. It has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. For Thanksgiving Day, my gym has 90 minute to 120 minute marathon session, (you know to get that extra burn for that day), I never thought I could do it but I did. I never thought after my event as I called it, that I could be strong again but I have. I still have some way to go but I am more than half way there. To everyone out there that thinks they can't, yes you can. Be positive, stay positive. Take one day at a time.

The beauty about taking a spin class is you can go at your own pace. Don't let the fact that you can't stand yet on the bike keep you from the many benefits of taking a class. Don't join a hard core class, but make sure it is one that is open to everyone and every level, go a little early and talk with the instructor and let him/her know about your knees prior to class and enjoy the ride. I promise as an instructor we would rather you take the class and build up within the environment than feeling you have to work your way in to it...Ride On and Enjoy!!!! emoticon

Well, a neighbor started spinning and told me how much she loves it. I have not taken a class yet, I'm kinda afraid to because I don't think I can handle the standing parts (she had me try it once with her and my knees hurt a tiny bit the next day). But, at my gym they have individual ones with screens in front of them. Yesterday I was on it for 35 minutes. I basically just stayed seated, but went up to a level 9 resistance (mostly staying between 4 and 8).

Hopefully soon I'll feel good enough to take a class where I'd be standing and stuff.

What's my story? hmm
I started Spinning a year ago this April, and it totally changed me. I spin 3 times a week, and do Ab workouts on top of that. I dropped lbs with in a snap, and my energy sky rocketed. YAY! Before Spin, I did Step. Two totally different exercises, but I find Spinning is for me. It's good on my body. Well last year, my husband had a near death experience & was in CCU for 18 days, and hospital/acute therapy for a week. All is good now. But anywho, I froze my gym membership for a couple of months because I knew I wouldn't think about exercising, but I did eat okay. I went back this January and got all my energy back, and still going at it strong! :)

The other day in my regular spin class Ivan the instructor announces the next song by saying, 'where were you in 1983?'. We all casually started saying how old we're were that year & the girl next to me claims she wasn't even born. Being in the front row, I told Ivan she wasn't even here yet, & I was 5. The girl next to me says, 'I thought you were younger than me! I'm 23, I thought you were 21!??!' I just turned 34. This made my month!

Ride on spin friends!!

If you have a nearby bike shop, I would go in there and see what is in stock to try on.
If not, here are some sites to look at. If you go this route, then most places have a good return policy if they don't fit.
Also, you'll need to get cleats put on (the bike shop can do that), SPD cleats works on almost all the combo pedal systems on indoor bikes.

i broke the bike once! i felt awful and sooo embarassed. the chain snapped while i was climbing. a couple weeks later when i was at spin class again someone else rode that same bike and the chain snapped again! i felt bad for him because the class was full so there were no other bikes he could climb onto like i did the first time.

On a side note, does anyone know where I can buy spinning shoes?

Took my 15 year old daughter to an intense spin class yesterday. It's called GForce - 75 minutes long and really hard work. My daughter runs cross country and thought it would be easy "riding a bike isn't hard, mom!" She almost didn't make it through the class, lol. She was so exhausted and kept asking "how many more songs?" She loved it though and wants to go back - I think it will be great for her. Since I can't run a 19 min 5k like her, it made me proud of myself that I am strong and fit enough to do this class. It really shows you how this workout is like no other! RIDE ON!!

The coaches were absolutely adorable. They were sweet and kind, even when I got the time wrong and came in 15 minutes late on my very first class. They hopped off their bike, continued to instruct and set me up on my bike. And then I was HOOKED! I loved it. It was an activity that I like, I was "fitted" on my bike and felt good after I was finished and not sore. However, I did not like the music and it was so loud I could not hear the coaches instructions. Wanting to go, but knowing I would not like the atmosphere, my husband found a "Black Friday Special" for an at home spinbike. I catch up on tv or watch a movie and then I don't know where the hour goes! Also looking at the times classes were available I was not able to "Fit" it in my schedule. Now I can fit it into MY schedule which would lead me to consistency, and look forward to getting things done around the house and then "treat" myself to a spin.

ARGH.. now and again you will get a spin instructor like that. Remember that it is your workout and you can always make it harder by adding resistance. Give the instructor or the
gym feedback.

We had some drama in my spinning class this morning! This guy came in while we were cooling down and he got on a bike and started doing his own thing. Well, our instructor's father (an older gentleman) happened to be sitting in the next bike, and told him that he isn't supposed to come in and disrupt the class. Well the guy started going off on him, so our instructor (who is awesome and very nice) got really pissed that this guy was yelling at her dad so she stopped the class and went over to reem him. It was crazy. Other than that, it was a great class! Haha. Ride on!

For me the instructor has to be intense but not yelling. We have four instructors at my gym and they are all great one of them is just awesome she will stay on everyone to make sure were sticking with it and with great form. We also just got some new music we do a lot of soft rock and techno. I love the music is like it makes my legs stay with the beat wether I want to or not. I've been spinning for about three months now. I'm addicted I go four times a week. If I miss a class I fell like I failed at something. Just got special cleats two weeks ago. If you spin a lot get some it is a complete different workout plus its saves your good running shoes. I know what u guys mean when people are talking its annoys me, I feel like yelling telling them if they were doing the class right they wouldn't have the oxygen to van constantly. Neways guys I think my reply is long enough. So happy spinning.

The first thing I have to say isn't really a story...it's more of a fact of my life! So every single time I go to spin class, I end up leaving with at least 2 more bruises on my legs or hips! I apparently can't manage to get on or off the bike without hitting something.

Second thing: My sunday spin class had a substitute instructor the other day. She was a really sweet lady. I'm pretty sure she is the regular yoga or aerobics instructor...or something. I don't mean to criticize, but the way she was riding her bike was like she was going for a ride in the park! I got a decent work out. However, I almost started laughing because I could just imagine her riding through the trees in a park on a nice sunday afternoon. Seriously makes me smile :)

I have started to avoid one instructor in particular. She started playing this heavy metal type of music with soft rock thrown in. I really liked her class in the beginning, but when she played this music, I just couldn't do her class anymore. It's kinda funny now that I look back at it. She expected us to "sprint" with a guy screaming on the speakers "DO YOU WANT IT DO YOU NEED IT IT'S IN YOUR HEAD IT'S IN YOUR HEAD 1 2 3 1 2 3". I just started climbing.
I think maybe if she would have prearranged the music a little like with the heavier rock music to the climbs and the softer rock (like bon jovi for example) with the sprints it'd be much better. I just couldn't get in the zone with the way she played it out! :) So, now I do something else when she's instructing and then go to class after hers. They usually run 2 spin classes 3 x a week at my gym so, it's pretty good pickings.

Ohhhh! That makes perfect sense. If I had a bike, I guess I'd be outdoors too!

I read a lot of things and probably even read this somewhere here from someone on our own team (!), about a 400 pound spinner. Great inspirational story. Sometimes I have felt out of place in my spin class. The original thought was, 'Am I too old for this?!'. Plus thoughts of being able to keep up. A big thought, though, was my need to lose weight and looking larger than everyone else on the spin bikes! But to have read this story about a 400 pound guy being brave enough to spin away and endure the entire class makes me throw any questions/doubts I might have out of the window. I wish this guy a lot of luck. I hope he enjoyed the class and continues to do so....

When I go to spin class, I am inspired by the instructor. Mainly because he sincerely seems like he's trying to do right by us. Follow spin protocols/procedures and serve up some quality exercise time. I really appreciate him for that. He seems quite dedicated to biking in general, so I like feeling that I'm being instructed in the proper ways. I wanna be like him when I'm a more grown up spinner..... emoticon .......

I agree, lights off is best! I think everyone prefers that. I just hate artificial light anyway, it bothers my eyes. I dont know what area you live in, but I know here the classes aren't as busy this time of year because a lot of people start riding outside.

Well i haven't been to a class yet this week. I hurt my toe on Sunday and im not sure i should attempt to spin yet until it heals a bit. Hope everyone is having a good week!

Just returned from a pretty good spin class. My instructor changed his music, so it was nice to mix it up a bit. Our Monday class is usually packed, but for some reason we were half full today. Hmmm? Our lights are not dim enough for me. I seem to enjoy the classes more when it's darker! Another, Hmmm? Wonder what that's about. ? One thing I know for sure that irritates me, though, is when people talk in class. Why, people?! SHUT UP!

Well, that says it right there! When you're thinking of skipping spin for something else...that's a 'sign'!

Til my next spin story! ☺

Happy Weekend!

This is a great idea! Sounds like a great class! The music definitely makes the class.

I have started going to a Sunday morning 90 min class, and absolutely love it. At first I thought oh lord, 90 min...am I gonna be able to handle it? But honestly, the instructor is so good and plays such good music that it seems to go by faster than the 60 min class I go to on Thursdays!

The Thurs. instructor plays awful music. I like her and her style and structure of the class, but all she plays is 80's pop and country. If Thurs evening wasn't such a good night for me to go I would probably go a different night. Like tonight I am almost thinking...hmm, should I just do the elliptical and skip the class?

I love spinning so much, I would really enjoy reading/sharing others spin class experiences. A la 'The Morning After' stories. Anything fun, unusual, milestones, etc......

Went to my class last night and looooved the music. This particular instructor usually plays a lot of stuff I play myself, so that's a cool bonus. Some things I haven't heard in quite a while, which is really cool! Music makes all the difference to me.....

This particular instructor is always late, but she was right on time last night. Because she's always late, half the class showed up 15 minutes late (!), after she had unusually started on time! Who knew?! It was 'refreshing' to start on time and end on time for a change!

Finally, I'm feeling in-the-zone. Starting to see more of a spinner's bod on that bike...and really keeping up!

Spin On!
