I love my instructors, they are so fun and energetic, during the school year I get to spin everyday so each day has a different instructor and a different routine. So far during the summer I havn't been able to get to the gym as often as I want to since it's very difficult to get childcare spots for my 3 kids, but I know as soon as school starts, I will be right there front row everyday

Music, and routines. Tomorrow I am asking my instructor (only Thursdays) what are the names of the music she uses. I have them in my head, but can't seem to find anything on it. :)

My spin instructor incorporates trivia into his classes.. Sometimes if we don't get the answer correct, we have to sprint.. and other times if we don't get it right, everyone around us has to sprint.. It's really fun!

The PUSH ..... Usually in the beginning of class , I'm NOT wanting to move.
The Teacher .... The teacher is funny , she makes us laugh & say "whoooooo !" .
30-40 minutes later , I'm sweating & drinking water .
I check the clock & close my eyes ..... Somehow closing my eyes makes me concentrate better. I usually imagine in my head - the warm beach , sun , feeling of joy. It's 10 degrees here & any positive thinking helps w/ this weather.
Today , SPIN was cancelled in my gym. I was so SAD. I didnT wanna exercise after that.
SPIN changed ME - I love it indoors , but I'm really bad outdoors as I'm stressing if the car is gonna hit me .

I used to take spin classes at the Y religiously 3 times/week but then I got pregnant (continued spinning up until about 20 weeks in) and ended up stopping. I loved the comaraderie and the music as well as pushing myself so hard. Once I had the baby, my third daughter, I ended up getting a new job that required me to be at work earlier on Tues and Thurs (the days I used to spin at 6am) so I just never went back. I've had to drop the y membership since I wasn't using it so haven't been able to go back to spin classes. About 6 months ago I got the idea of buying a spin bike to have at home. I was really excited at first, rode it fairly regularly but got bored without the instructor so then bought some DVD's so that I could go along with the instructor for motivation but it just wasn't the same and after a couple months I just quit riding again all together. Just last night, I decided to try and get Netflix working on my laptop so that I could watch movies while I ride and that has given me some new motivation to stick with it. I'll tell you though, my butt was sure sore after not riding for so long!!! I would love to get back into spin classes some day, but with three kids under the age of 8 and three different part time jobs I am just not able to find the time to get back to the gym. Maybe down the road when the kids are grown up...

What makes SPINNING work for me.....definitely has to be my students, a solid profile, and the tunes to make it all work! I love it when they all come together and I look up in the middle of the class and see everyone focusing on their ride. FLOW baby.

Now off to teach my noon class....Hill Intervals! Bring it on folks. emoticon

I like a challenging class daily with good music - by challenging I mean one that makes me sweat/breathe hard. A trainer that makes you work is also one of your best friends. I stopped spinning for six months this year after a bout of heavy bleeding from fibroids and becoming menopausal. I found the gym an unforgiving place at this time, as I worried about smell and leaking. It was not the kind of thing that I wanted to talk to my instructor about, but when I did, I got the support that I needed.

Keep at it...the benefits far outweigh the challenges. Now is the time to dispense with the biscuits and sweets. They have done enough damage.

The music...I love when I can ride to the beat or sing to it. I spin to unwind and I love getting lost in the ride. I love when everyone is enthusiastic and cheering each other on! I don't like when the music doesn't match the ride...I can't do a fast beat up a hill and I can't sprint to mellow music. I love when the instructor is enthusiastic! emoticon

My instructor makes the class fun, challenging and rewarding. I like her choice of music and how she motivates us to keep going. During the workout, I feel like I am working really hard... but my reward comes after the ride is over. It gives me a completely amazing feeling afterwards:)

Both the instructor and music, but I tend to equate the music with each instructor. My favorite is friendly, but really pushes us during class. She lets us know what is coming up next on her workout schedule so we can prepare for it. Her choice of music is upbeat and the beat of the music matches the tempo she wants us to work at. She walks around during class to make sure our forms are "perfection" and encourages those she has had for several years when we don't look like we are working out as hard as she knows we could; however, if we are having a bad day from an earlier workout or lack of sleep, we simply tell her we are good.

"She believed she could so she did."

I like spinning because I burn a ton of calories, I get a great cardio work out in, Im motivated by music (spinning, cleaning, getting ready, working.... Im one of those people), and it is an effective way for me to train for riding on the roads and trails all year long. I began spinning last summer with a friend 1-2x a week in addition to my normal work out routine. I stuck with it and my first ride this spring (march/april) was a 36 mile ride on a gravel trail without any issues. My second big ride (april) was my first ever ride on my road bike- 26 miles and lots of hills. My third big ride (second big one on my road bike) was nearly 50 miles (because we got lost). While I wont say that spinning is the ONLY reason why I was able to go out and ride as much so early in the season, I will say that it is a BIG reason why I could.

Spinning makes me feel "ALIVE" after each class. I have been doing it for 4 or 5 months now. To me it's so much better than running. I use to run a lot, but with Spinning, my joints don't feel as bad as it did when I did running.

My instructor is awesome & so is his music choice. emoticon
My favorite moves, if you will, are "jumps" & "sprints". And what a calorie burned Spinning is too. When I did Step Aerobics I didn't sweat as much as I do in this class. woohoo!

I have been Spinning for 8 months. I love that each class is different, the music is different, and each instructor is different. I enjoy when my regular instructors are on taking the night off because we get to have someone new (new to me, rather). I love the way the music makes the class more intense. I think my favorite part about Spinning is that I never feel as though I've been working out for a hour. I didn't think I would like Spin, but my trainer is one of the instructors at my gym and told me to try it. Last month I really committed and bought Spin shoes. I am addicted and love it.

I need the upbeat club music! Sometimes when the instructor isn't talkitive or positive, and the music stinks I pop out my I pod and listen to music that going to be me in to it. (Not loud though, I still want to hear the instructor.)

There is a few things to help you with the pain. There are specialised seat covers with built in cushions as well as Spinning pants or shorts with a cushion inside by the butt region to help with the pain. however, if you stick with it long enough the pain eventually does go away. You should also try and do climbs, which is something a instructor shows you in a class which is great for your legs and abs.

One of the reasons I like spinning is that it is a mindless, me-time exercise that allows me to think of whatever I wanted while I follow the instructor's direction and listen to the music. Plus the release of endorphins make me feel good. Also it is indoors so I do not have worry about the weather or the time of day!

I will tell you what DOESN'T make it work for me...... It's the pain in my butt (literally). I have my own machine (just got it Saturday) and it's my FIRST time on a spinning bike EVER. I'm only able to do 10 minutes a day. Please tell me this pain won't be forever. Thanks!

The ability to challenge yourself based on how you feel that day. If you want you can really push up the tension in the wheel and feel the leg burn but if you are a little bit out of it you can still get a workout but not push yourself quite as hard. The classes are directed by a teacher but you basically control your speed and tension level.

Eddy to answer your question, there are not new 'moves' for Spinning. Each program, whether it be Les Mills, RPM or Spinning, have form that you follow and they don't vary or have new additions. Each was designed to ensure that 1) you are mimicking moves on a road bike (which is why Spinning was created in the first place) and 2) that you are cycling safely but with purpose. It sounds like the form you had a question about is jumps; you stand up and sit down with a set cadence for a certain period of time. Jumps were designed to mimic powering up for a short burst of speed on a road bike. What we do as instructors is design each class profile to achieve a certain goal -- it could be strength, preparing for a race, etc. The 'moves' we put into the program that day are all designed to help achieve the goal for the class. In terms of 'killer', each class should be challenging and it's up to two people: you and the instructor! If you'd like some routines to check out, go to spinning.com, and do a search for class profiles. They post 4 new ones every month that describe what is to be done throughout the class and for how long and it even includes music suggestions for most of the segments. You won't understand the symbols that go with each segment but they can give you an idea of what's entailed in putting a class profile together. If you are new to Spin, I certainly hope you are taking classes rather than trying to figure this out and doing it yourself!

I hope that helps clarify things a little! Ask away if you have any other questions and keep on Spinning!!!

Defintely the music, I've only been spinning for a few weeks and I've had the pleasure of trying 4 different instructors just until I could find the one that was a perfect match and I stumbled across David today at my local Y and he was awesome. The music was a variety of everything which kept me pumped throughout the entire 60 min class. I actually ended up burning a total of 950 calories. emoticon

I love spinning 99% of the time. Recently I had an instructor who talked the entire class... I almost walked out. And she was yelling things like "You need to stay at my cadence or you shouldn't be in this class." "Those who aren't trying know who you are." I could go on, and it was awful. I will never attend one of her classes again!

Hello.
I joined this team a week ago or so, but finally made a point to post. lol
I use to do Step Aerobics for 5 years, but was getting bored with it. I still love it, but it wasn't for me anymore, so I decided to take up a Spinning class along with my co-worker who said she wanted to take it. So I did, and I survived. WOW that was an intense class, and guess what...I'm still at it two months later, and take it 3 times a week. My favorite is the 'hurdles'...works everything especially the butt. lol
When I changed my work schedule I had to make sure I was able to keep my Spin classes after work, and I keep the normal work hours, and they said it was okay!

Spinning works for me because I can actually see progress, & I seem to work out a heck a lot more that anything else. I don't believe I've sweated as much as I do in these classes.
Oh AND I am down 20lbs too.
emoticon

I love the feeling I get after a spinning class. Also I noticed I have more energy and when going out for a bike ride my stamina and hill climbing has improved.

I love SPIN. I have been Spinning for about 8 weeks now and have lost 18 lbs. I have never liked running. Walking wasn't doing it for me. In a 45 min class I burn up to 800 calories. I have done Super Spin for 60 minutes and have burned close to 1000 calories. Love the music and the instructors are always motivated.

@ Eddy, Aside from all the basics, I like "freezes". This is when you are standing and you freeze your upper body (keep your elbows bent but don't let your torso or sholders move, takes a lot of stability in core and legs) but keep your legs working, maybe even speed up a bit. It is a real challenge and helps you to realize how much you are really using your upper body in a spin class! Hopefully this is something new to you and that you can integrate into your routine. emoticon

Spinning just gives me a BLAST from inside! I am truly PUMPED UP when I go to a class. I often joke that it's like a club without smoking and alcohol. So much FUN! The music really gets me going and I feel as if I've accomplished such GREATNESS before (just getting there), during (can't believe it's me on the bike!) and after (so so PROUD of myself). Spinning is the greatest exercise I've found for myself since high school volleyball!!!

Cheers!

Does anybody have any good Spinning "moves"? I've been making it up as I go...warm-up, hills, ups and downs (or whatever they're called, lol...you know, where you're up for a few seconds, sit a few seconds, up a few seconds, etc). Are there any "routines" you guys do in your spinning classes that are just killer??
Thanks for any help!

I spin 4X / week now, and I'm really enjoying the differences in the instructors. One really uses music and that is fun. Another offers a lot of instruction and teaching. Another, whom I've worked with for two months now, really seems to know how to push me. I like the variety and challenge of each!

music is a big part of the class for me, because i like to keep time to the beat so i keep my pace consistent. and of course i prefer music that i would normally listen to. i went to one class where the instructor played gosple music. while he's free to play whatever he wants, i just can't get into that, and i don't feel that's right for a workout session. needless to say, i never went to one of his classes again.

who the instructor is and their style is also a biggie-i will not take some instructors classes at my gym because they are too passive, and they do nothing to motivate you. i like someone who seems like they are trying to push you, even though its not on a 1-on-1 basis.

As a newbie to Spinning, I love the ability to have different instructors and try different workouts. I love how strong I feel after I have pushed myself hard. I love the calorie burn, the music, the dim lights, and the energy from the class! I am definitely hooked!

Okay, so what makes it work? The intesity of the workout. I love when the instructors are pushing to the next level. When they tell you to surge right after a hard climb. It's an amazing feeling.
I like to be pushed I like to hear that I can do this when I am at my breaking point, right when I feel like I need to stop and then the instructor yells to turn it another 1/2 or 1 full turn. Just great! And of course the freedom to make it my workout. The music helps, but I can zone out in any kind of music.
I came from a gym that didn't dim the lights to one that does. For me it doesn't make a difference. I still get that same WOW feeling.

As an instructor I love reading these comments! In all honesty it brings my focus back to how I may improve my game. For me, it began with an inspirational instructor and a family atmosphere.

Definitely the instructor and the music! I park myself in the first row and I try to follow the instructors pace the whole class. I also love how drenched in sweat I become during a Spinning Class. I can't get enough!

Its a lot about the instructor for me. I feel in love with spin becuase of my old spin instructor, he knew us each by name and held us accountable every Monday and Wednesday.. His music was always changing and he would always mix up the class routines. He was the only reason I continued to stay at the gym. I have now switched gyms to a less expensive one and have found 3 awesome instructors. I was going to a class where I really didnt like the instructor he would be late every week and cut class short, he also tried to impose his beliefs on eating onto the class. I finally stopped going to his class and found other times to go.

Definitely music! I also love it when everyone is working hard and it's showing (the instructor too). I absolutely love the intensity of spinning.

It's a combination of the instructors and music. I spin with four different instructors and each one has a different style that works you in a different way. One instructor has what she calls "get in the mud", she has you squat and pedal backwards for a song, it's very intense but it works and it's motivating when you are able to complete that song "in the mud". She also has you throwing boxing punches when you are sitting. You will be amazed how much that works your upper body. I also love the fact that I burn a lot of calories and my heart rate stays elevated!

I get a lot of compliments on my legs and butt and my response is: this is what spinning will do for you!

spinning for me is all about the music--after attending classes for 4+ years and listening to most of the instructors same music, I now wear my own music. Spin allows me to work at my target HR of 80-90% without being bored or feel like I'm really working so hard!

I'm new to spinning and I'm loving it. The class I attend is a 30-35 minute spin 30-35 minute tone and it works for me. The videos are great, the music helps me focus on the speed and keeping up with the beat, the instructor is excellent, always encouraging us to push a little bit more, "give me one more gear..." "we're almost there..." It's great! I think I've found the thing that will keep me coming back for more.
I like how I feel after class, muscles have introduced themselves in no uncertain terms, and I feel good, like I've accomplished something.

If it's going to be, it's up to me!
