The Michigan Department of Community Health just started a new campaign last week asking Michiganders to pledge to lose 10% of their weight to fight the obesity epidemic. Here's the link if you're interested (I had a hard time finding it - so they need to advertise better).
For me, losing 10% will move me out of the obesity category and in addition to feeling better physically, I will feel better knowing that I'm doing my part to improve Michigan's obesity ranking. Granted, I can't stop there, but it's a start.
I agree, let's change our ranking for obesity one sparker at a time. Even as I help contribute to that rating I find when I am on plan I notice my fellow obese Michigander more. Went to a hockey game the other night and so many heavy people eating the worse of what food can be. I don't say that meant as critical to those people because I am them but in recognition of just how we have gotten the way we are and the culture of bad food that surrounds us making it that much more challenging. There were no food stands at the game for fresh fruit or healthy smoothies. It was all junk! We've got to rise above that!

Well it all starts in the home. We are supposed to be setting examples for our children. People need to stop driving through the drive thrus and buying happy meals for their kids. Parents need to cook more nutritious meals and snacks. Get your kids involved in activities that require movement. It sounds easy to do, but, why isn't it being done? Too many kids are left to their own devices too without the tools necessary to build healthy minds and bodies. Sad.
It's sad that we are fifth in the nation for obesity. Most of us know that getting to and maintaining a healthy weight requires planning and determination to make healthy living one of our top priorities. Those of us on SparkPeople can lead by example.
