Definitely Meijer!!! Love the produce, sales, and the employees are nice. Our Wal-mart is not very nice at all..there was even a fire there a few weeks ago. I hear that it's even worse now.

Meijer would be my second choice. Aldi's is the place for me...I dont buy meat there, but most everything basic I do!
WalMart used to be cheaper as far as groceries...but that is definitely nOT the case anymore. Near me there is a Meijer and a Walmart directly across the street from each other....guess who has a skeleton parking lot? WALMART!

Meijer....especially on days when you use your credit card and get an additional 15/5% off your bill...Also, if you use your credit card you get 6 cents off per gallon of gas.

For my 2 week stock up on everything trips I go to Save a Lot. It literally cut my bill by 50% over Meijer. For what I need to fill in that runs out (milk, bread, etc.) I go to our local Spartan store. If I had all the money in the world I would buy from Meijer only. You would have to hold a gun to my head to get me to shop at the Evil Empire (Walmart).

Accountability, initiative, patience. I can do it.

Our local Walmart has never been dirty when I've been there. Neither has Meijer. It also will honor prices from Meijer. I usually go to both tho. There are things I like best from each of them. The only thing I;ve ever asked either one to honor was Pepsi when it was on sale at one & not the other.

definitely meijer!!! although i shop at both if i had to choose i would go to meijer. i go online to make my grocery lists and meijers website actually lists the prices to most of their items including food even if its not on sale or in the ad. i used to make my list and write the price next to the item and then go to walmart first and get what was cheaper than what i had written down and after a couple weeks i noticed that maybe only 2 or 3 items on my list of like 50 things ended up being cheaper than meijers. walmart does not save me money like i always thought it did!

I use to shop Walmart religously. There Prices were cheaper, however, recently I find mysef at Meijer. Walmart Does not honor there adds online, and if I go to one Walmart store and see a movie on sale for 14.98, I can't get that price at my local Walmart...Meijer however honors even their competitors prices, so I vote MEIJER!!!

I shop at both but used to shop mainly at Meijer just because it was closer. If it is for clothes or really anything not food then I would have to say Walmart because they are cheaper usually.

As I said I work at Walmart as does 3 other of my family members, I don't want to get in the middle of big hubbud about Walmart, but when someone says they are ruining a community- think about the jobs Walmart are providing to a community- paychecks that mean eveything to the local families. you can get into the politcs of the company- but what matters in the end is that those jobs mean everything to those workers. I will also add- I have worked for terrible companies and walmart is not the worst by any means.

I shop at both stores. I feel no guilt about shopping Walmart-they support 5 of my families. A son a daughter & 3 adult grandchildren. Coldwater has the distribution center and pays very well. My son is a truck driver for them. A great job. I like each store for certain things. Went to Felpausch Spartan store last week- Everything was a lot more expensive. Some things up to $1.00 more than the others. Can't handle that!!!

If I have to choose between the two, I'll pick Meijer over WalMart every time. However, I usually end up shopping at my local Spartan store (Sheena's Marketplace) or at Kroger to switch it up. I have two Meijers within about 10 miles, but neither are as close as the other two stores I shop at.

For a while, we were boycotting Walmart in our family because of all the bad rap it was getting about locking its overseas employees in for the entire shift and whatnot. Bottom line, that was a while ago, and there were plenty of lawsuits to compensate. After all the bad scandal, Walmart finally got a grip and decided to find other ways to increase their bottom line, and has really straightened up and taken note of environmental and social corporate responsibility. Sam Walton would be proud of the changes.

That being said, we just moved back to Michigan a couple of years ago, and in Arizona they don't have Meijer. So, I had this preconceived notion from when I was growing up here that Meijer was more expensive. Imagine my pleasant surprise to find that Meijer remains competitive with Walmart prices enough that I can justify the small difference to enjoy the cleaner facility, better produce (hands down!), and closer location. I agree, that the peach flavored water is worth the trip to Walmart if I buy in bulk and only have to go once a month. But, Meijer has undoubtedly stolen my loyalty back with better service and a cleaner store. Walmart has issues with having enough registers open. I've never had to wait at Meijers more than was realistic.

I will not support Walmart. Until I have the proof that they are better croporate citizens both locally and globally. They have destroyed many local economies by setting up shop and pushing out the local retail. check out http://www.wakeupwalmart.com/facts/
then you decide if walmart is deserving of your patronage.

I LOVE Meijers!! Good Michigan Company. Walmart is dirty, unorganized and put many smaller companies out of business locally. I refuse to go in there. Meijers have great produce and good selection. emoticon

Meijer. I worked there--I know their layout and their general approach, so my shopping is easier. I go to Wal-Mart once in a while just to see what they have that is new. Sometimes they do get new items before Meijer.

I shop both depending on what I am looking for. BUT, that being said, I do find Walmart is lacking in products for the coupons I have. Meijer usually has everything. I have a sister who has worked at Meijer since she was 19 and she is 57 now!

I don't LIKE walmart, for so many reasons. Their prices are not that great. Their stores are dirty. Their produce selection is terrible. Mostly I don't like them because they took all their busisness out of the country. Sorry, right now we need products made here. One little story. I always bought my socks at wallmart. I have little feet, size 5 shoe. their Danskin socks fit without bunching up. The last pack I bought were nothing like the ones I had bought before. I called Danskin to see what had happened. They said they didn't make the socks any more, wallmart did. Same price, same package, lousey construction!!! Like everything else, they buy it and get it done cheaper by lessening the quality and charging the same price. I won't be going back for anything!

Meijer all the way for us! I'll go to Walmart for humidifier filters because our Meijer doesn't have them but other than that, it's rare to go to Walmart.

Yes, the Meijer produce is very high quality. I love Meijer and worked there back in college. I like the family-owned concept vs. big corporation.

I love Meijer. It's a chain. Owned by one family. They are not a corporation. They are a private bussiness. I know, I have worked there for 33 years. They are a good company. And the produce and prices are the best. Everyday. So shop at Meijer and keep me working!!!
Good luck with your weight loss. Many of us at Meijer, are trying the sparkpeople too.

We (I say we because my husband does much of the shopping) shop at Meijer for most things. I agree that Meijer produce is superior to Wal-Mart. The one thing that I like at Wal-Mart that I can't get at Meijer is the carbonated water in Peach flavor. Meijer is also closer to us in Jackson.

Have a great day and Jesus Loves You!

I'm in Paris, MI and shop at the Big Rapids Meijer store. I know Meijer has a policy of buying from local farmers and suppliers, so buying local, supports Michigan farmers so they get all my grocery shopping funds.
Walmart has a huge history of screwing its employees out of heath care and getting full time jobs. Much of their groceries come from out of the country and have too many chemicals for me.

I shop for just about everything once a week at Meijer. On the way home from work I drive right past a Kroger and will stop in there for something quick if I need it. We have a beautiful new super-Walmart in Canton but I dislike the shopping experience so I don't go there at all.

I am a Walmart Cashier,we have a Meijer right across the street. I Shop for produce at the Meijer because Walmart produce- at least in our store- sucks big time. As for the for the matter of complaints made about overseas products and treatment of workers- I think if you look at the books of any major corporation and you will see the same thing. I am not in anyway defending Walmart, there are issues in our store as well as other locations but..I also hear from meijer employees that they have issues. But come into my Walmart and the cashiers I work with - myself included- would walk through fire to make you happy. We love our customers.

if i had to pick, i'd say meijers, not just "local" but more oriented to what i want and where to put it. the super walmart in town, and other walmarts that i've seen, seem to be way to overwhelming for my needs. just get me in and out of there NOW!!

I live Big Rapids too!

I very rarely buy groceries in Walmart any more (and I didn't shop there all the time even when I worked there, lol). I don't like the grocery department after they remodeled the store. They carry less products now, and the aisles aren't as wide; I feel somewhat claustrophobic in that section.

Love the produce at at Meijer! It's so nice and fresh, and many times, I discover things that are new to me that I try. I'm in Meijer once a week for my groceries.

Here in Big Rapids Meijer gets my vote as well. I love their produce section, not only because it is so fresh but because they offer so much more variety.. especially in organics. I've never had a problem with any of their meats. Meijer also carries a better variety in the dairy section. I do have to go to Wal-Mart to get my Cabot cheese tho.

I prefer Kroger. I shop on Mondays. Walmart is near empty on Mondays. I have shopped there and then had to go somewhere else because half of what I needed was completely gone. I don't understand why the parking lot is always packed when I go by. I am boycotting Meijers as they are a part of a group of companies that wants the State to lower employee pay as though the imbalanced budget can be solved on the backs of state employees. I don't see the owners of Meijer cutting their salaries!

Walmart is okay for those quick needs, but where we live (Lapeer Co) Meijers' wins hands down! And I wouldn't dream of buying meat at Walmart.
I travel a lot for my biz, so imagine my horror when I saw that there is over a 25 cent difference on some items, like lower prices in Shelby Twp.
Kroger has become a pit. It smells when you walk in the door from the bottle returns, or if it's in the back, it's right near the meat section. Also not so appetizing!

For groceries I was always going to Kroger since we're an equal distance from both a Kroger and Meijer (but the Kroger seemed closer). Then one day on my way home from work I decided to stop at a Meijers on the way. I was just blown away by their produce department and just ended up loving most things about the store. I don't know if it was because they had just revamed it (almost completed) but it was amazing. Now I only go to Kroger if I need to pick up a couple of things really quickly. If I'm looking for produce I'll go out of my way to get it from Meijer!

I'm a Meijer gal. Not that I work there but I live in Grand Rapids and I like that I'm supporting a local company - even if it is a chain. There's not much that I want that I can't find there.

I'm going to try Aldi soon - hearing great things about their food and prices.

I dont like Kroger because the prices are to high.
Meijer foods are good. But I dont care for there produce. The grocery store I work at brings in a lot of local produce. But I also shop around as well

Lately it depends... used to be Walmarts - they are NO longer the best price place around.
I have been going back to Meijers more lately.

I think it depends on which Wal-Mart you go to. The ones in South Lyon and Commerce Township aren't horrible but not great. But in those areas there is competition.

Personally I go to Kroger, although I am starting to like Busch's grocery stores a lot.

I think Meijer has matched the 4.00 prescriptions as well.

Wal-Mart may be cheaper for toiletries and other things, but you would have to pay me to shop there! I would gladly pay the less than $1 difference!! Plus, by the time I drive to Wal-Mart to "save" money, I have already spent the savings on gas getting there!

I'm sorry to hear that so many of you had a bad experience at Walmart. If you ever get to the southern part of the state (Three Rivers to be exact) I guarantee your Walmart experience will be different. Everyone their prides them self on customer service, and a clean neat and orderly store. That being said--YES I WORK THERE--However I do shop Meijer for it's meat and produce because truth be told Walmart meat is just nasty and the produce is disgusting.

I find Wal-mart to be cheaper but I have to say that I enjoy Meijer's produce department more and also they have more to choose from in regards to health-foods.

so i used to live near cadillac, and the super wal-mart is right next to meijer there....so when i went to do my grocery shopping at 3am, i'd go to meijer first to get mark-down meats, fresh produce, things that were on sale, and anything "odd" (ethnic foods mostly). then i'd go to wal-mart to get the more basic stuff, because it was cheaper there. :) cheers!

Usually I buy my cleaning supplies, etc at Walmart and groceries at Kroger. I WILL not buy product at Walmart...it's always very pitiful. Like it's not fresh. If I have a ton of stuff to get in the way of cleaning supplies, etc and I need groceries I'll go to Meijer. Kroger is closest to me (5 minutes) whereas it takes 15-20 minutes to get to both Walmart and Meijer.

I HATE walmart, even though my boyfriend works there and can get us a discount! Every time I go there, there are tons of people and NO cashiers!!!!!!! Grrrrrr.... Although I do get my percriptions from there so Zach can pick them up while he is at work and they have the $4 generics

I also like Meijer because it is around the corner and it is 24/7... unlike the walmart that Zach works at, so I can avoid all of the crowds and shop after I get off at midnight. The store that we go to doesn't have any cashiers at night, but we can check out our own stuff (and faster).

I actually like Walmart when it comes to groceries. I find Meijers prices to be at least .40 more on a lot of items I buy. I also like buying my diapers at Walmart because they are $5 cheaper for the same amount. The only thing I usually go to Meijer for is the produce because I believe they have some of the best around. It looks appealing and tastes great. But I've also heard a lot of good things about Kroger as well.

I'm actually a fan of both. I shop Meijer because the one near me has excellent produce and the meat counter is always fresh and nice looking. The butchers are more then willing to help you with selection too. Wal-Mart I go to for the toiletries as they are generally cheaper then Meijer, but that's only when I'm out on the other side of the city. Meijer's is closer. Kroger's is a stretch, but I'll go for some of the sales they have.

Oh, hello by the way! I'm fairly new. :)

Well I guess I'm the oddball out in this discussion, because I LOVE WALMART. We practically live there. I have a large family and Sam's is right next door. I buy my meat at sams and any other bulk items then head over to walmart. I use to shop Meijers before Walmart came into town. But now the prices just can't be beat. I know Meijer's is a MI company, so every now and again I'll stop in. Kroger way too high, unless you buy there 10 for $10 specials. But with my family we like to do everything under one roof; and walmart and Sam's is the best place, for the best price to do that.

I am a Meijer fan through and through. Shopped at Meijer in Norton Shores for years. Moved to Mason county in 1974, very sad no Meijers. Now we have both Meijers and WalMart but I buy almost everything at Meijers. We have a local Spartan store and they have good meat deals and good baked goods. I like a store with a real meat department with a trained butcher.

I shop at Meijers, because there is not a store in our area that can beat their produce. We do not have a Walmart superstore here, just a regular Walmart. Kroger, L&L, and D&W (formerly Felpausch) all have overripe and rotten produce.

Meijer meat in our store is fine (I am not beef or pork eater but Hubby is). I have not had the steaming problem with hubby's steak though, that was an interesting post.

I avoid Wal-Mart like the plague. I only go to Meijer when it is absolutely necessary. My favorite store for meat is L&L. They have great meat sales and the steaks sizzle on the grill. However, everything else is more expensive than Meijer. The only 2 grocery stores in our little town are Meijer and L&L. If we are in Lansing, we will go to the Meijer store there. I miss my Dominick's store in Chicago.

They are building a new Super Wal-mart by us. There is no Meijer close to us an to me they are hard to get around in when it is hard to walk an they do not always have a scooter avaliable. I mostly shop Krogers an CVS. I am waiting for the new Wal-mart to be completed. Sometimes I go to Big Lots because things are really cheap there. But they are always such a mess an hard for me to get around in. emoticon emoticon

Hi In comparing walmart w meijers I shop meijer's were i'm at i have, but i like the one we go to it is always clean and nice. I have shop one walmart before it was okay, but the employees were so rude there. When I ask a guestion where something was at the sales person act as if i was bothing her. She did point and tell me where, but i always go for the good service i get whereever I shop. About CVS I work there to they do have good prices on personal stuff. I always love krogers the apartment i live in has a van that takes those shopping that don't have cars and meijers is where they take us to. I have found good bargains there.

I have gotten plenty of shampoo, soap, deodorant, and cleaning supplies from CVS for practically free. Call it weird, but I have found out how to "play that game" so to speak in order to avoid going to Walmart. I hate our local one. lol! And the prices at Kroger for that stuff almost never seems to go down.

I shop at Walmart, Kroger and Meijer.

Walmart has the best prices on the non-grocery items that you buy when you're typically grocery shopping - shampoo, soap, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, etc.

Kroger has GREAT sales on things and probably the best prices on canned/dry goods I've seen but their meat just SUCKS and the produce department doesn't ever seem to have FRESH items (at least at the 3 I have access to).

Meijer is the best for produce HANDS DOWN and has a really nice meat department (lots of selection and fresh in both departments). They are a little pricier than Kroger or Walmart on the boxed items (chips, crackers, cookies, cereal, etc.).

So, all in all, I guess I prefer Meijer over the other two for my weekly stuff but if I need to stock the cupboards with the canned/dry/boxed stuff I go to Kroger and if it's a week that I need all the toiletry and cat supplies I go to Walmart.

EDIT - Oh and there isn't much for Farmer's Markets around here unless I want to get up early and go to the one in downtown Flint on the weekends - which I don't have much time for now that I have a 2 year old. There's a little store by me that I LOVE for meat but they are really expensive - it's called Nehrings and it's on the corner of Bristol Rd. & Belsay Rd. in Flint/Burton.

Maybe there is nothing wrong with the meat Meijer, and I am just spoiled by the fresh processed stuff I get at the local processors. I recently had ground sirloin from Meijer and it just tasted like it'd gone over; plus, I am a little ticked when I have to boil off water and dye that I paid by the pound for that I didn't want.

When I throw a steak on the grill, it's supposed to sizzle, not steam!

I love the Meijer near me in Lapeer. It is so nice and clean! Has a great selection and nice produce. I hate the produce at Walmart as well. I think they buy Class B produce or even C or D.

Maybe you should try Meijers again. I buy all my meat from Meijers and have only had one problem in 37 years. The Meijers in Scio township now also carries free range chicken and buffalo! You might want to give it a shot. If you don't like what's out on display, ask for something else to be brought out. Also not all Meijers carries hte same items. CHeck in another one if you live or work near a second or third one. THey might carry different items.

I find this interesting that the general concensus is Walmart is poor by comparison to Meijer. Wish Meijer would do something about their meat so they could truly live up to their One Stop Shopping plug. Seems the majority (if not all) go elsewhere for meat.

I'm with you Marla. Every WalMart I have been to in SE Michigan has been filthy dirty. When a store looks bad when you first walk in, I am not going to buy anything, much less food products, from them. I love the Meijer stores, but I do buy most of my beef from a local butcher.

I dislike all the Walmarts by me. They are awful in terms of selection AND in price. I hear of people saving some money by going to Walmart but it has NEVER happened to me (even when I try to match coupons to sale items!). None of the Walmarts near me carry veggies or have a huge variety of food items. So I just tend to not go there ever unless I have a gift card.

The Walmart, however, by my parents place in Bowling Green, Kentucky is AWESOME and I love going to that one. That one is a super walmart I guess? It has a huge selection of veggies and food.

If given a choice of going to Meijer or Walmart, it'd be Meijer NO CONTEST.

For my fruits and veggies though I go to Joe Randazzo's.

For everything else, I usually go to Krogers.

I think Meijer is by far the better choice for groceries. One stop shopping and the produce is always good. However, I hate their ground beef and shop for that at Sam's club. I do think Walmart has overall better prices on paper/cleaning products etc.

Since we don't have Meijers here in the "tip of the mitt" I shop Walmart for groceries but I don't buy their meat or much produce. I buy meat from a local meat market and produce from our local Glen's store or farmers market in summer. They are building a Meijers in Petoskey so we WILL have one!!! : p

I agree, the produce section at Walmart is awful. I normally shop at Meijer because they have a lot of the food I buy, but we just got a new Kroger in town and the produce is great! Kroger is a bit pricey though.

Msweezer, that's the one thing I don't buy from Meijer - meat! Every time I do, I regret it. Maybe I'll try WM sometime, though I generally just get large bundles from the local meat processors (A&A in Jackson.)

I like the mejers stores downstate from me but we just had one open in Gaylord. It is so over priced and laid out weird. You end up in clothing trying to find yogurt and butter. I was not impressed at all and will not make a special trip there for my foods. If I am going to drive that far I will go to kalkaska to the cherry street farm market and get my produce there. They have great stuff.

If you haven't got a smile on your face and laughter in your heart, then you are just a sour old fart!

consider your selves very lucky....you could be shopping in the up where i live...what we have is a wal-mart and 2 smaller chain stores.....wal-mart i worked at and still have a discount there, so i do by my cleanig products there and a few other things that are cheaper, but other wise it is super one..none of them have a nice produce section..and the thrird store is very expensive...how they stay alive is beyond me...i do shop around though and look for the sales and if i need then i get....summer time i like to go to the farmers market for fresh produce but sometimes they even have not good of produce because they usually by it some where else and then sell it at there stand...
a few weeks ago i was down state and on our way back we did stop at a meijers store..it is so nice and big and bright and clean looking....there produce and the variety was wonderfull....even some of the cloths had a nice price tag on them....i was wishig i had a cooler and lived closer as i would of done my shopping there..

I shop at both as I can't get all things at Meijer that we like (for instance Black Forest Ham). So I go there for some items and I have found the meat to be better than Meijers and a local meat dealer I know also shared that Walmart's meat is better than Meijer and I have found it to be so. Anyway, I do both. I do watch things I most everything is made in China at Walmart - that's why so many items are cheaper but you have to beware as well. Quality isn't there.

I too agree that Meijer's product department is far better than Walmart so will wait and get my produce there if I'm not able to get to the Farmer's Market for fresh produce.

Never really bought foodstuff at Walmert. I do go there for shoes (usually) though. Most frustrating thing at Walmart for me is the long lines.
Since I work at Meijers, I usually shop there for groceries. Most of the time their produce is very good. A lot of it comes from local growers too. One thing though, check your prices carefully. SOmetimes what looks like a sale really isn't and a "Price Drop" sign sometimes means the store decided to raise the price on that particular product the week or two before. IN general though Meijers is a good place to buy things you use and eat every day.

Personally, I like Krogers if I go to the chain stores! I had a really bad experience with Farmer Jack and am glad they aren't around any more! lol! But Meijers has always been so so for me and I've never really done a lot of shopping at Walmarts.

I love Eastern Market for Farmer's Markets. Kroger is my usual place because its closest but I like to shop Meijer too because it's a Michigan company.

Normally, I shop Meijer, but this weekend I went to WalMart for my weekly grocery shopping.

It was awful! Not only was the produce section tiny in comparison, the store had NO cantaloupe, there were no regular size tomatoes left (just an empty display), and the grapes are tiny and pitiful looking, the cherries I bought were bleh. Romaine hearts were brown all the way in, which baffles me because I normally buy these and they last a week, week and a half in my fridge!

This week I am going to try the Farmer's Market, but beyond that, what chain store in Michigan do you love the most? I never realized how badly Meijer spoiled me!
