I feel the same way Deb. At least we don't get all those weather catastrophe's. We don't even get much for tornadoes here in the "tip of the mitt". We just have to deal with snowstorms and blizzards! I love the Jeff Foxworthy type comment about Michigan, you know you're from Michigan when you drive 65 miles an hour in a raging blizzard and don't flinch! LOL That's us up here! We just deal with it.

Spring will be here soon!!!

That's true Deb, I totally agree.
I'm desperately waiting for spring too. I try to lose throughout the winter by getting in the gym and doing workouts at home but its defintely not the same. I'm looking forward to warmer days when I can walk and run outside. On a nice day, I feel like I can walk forever. Hang in there. It must be coming, right?
P.S. Have you even noticed no one ever says, "gee, I can't believe its spring already? Where did the time go?" HA! No way! Bring it on already!

Look at it this way: Winter is the price we pay for no earthquakes, no hurricanes, no mudslides, no forest fires, no tarantulas, and no sharks!!!

Compared to those others - I'll take winter :-)

Isn't that funny how that works?!? I was born and raised here too-for the most part. Spent some time in Indiana and some in Florida but have lived here now for over 25 years and the winters are just so hard to deal with! I think part of the problem this year is that it really seems like it is worse than usual! I've got those snow banks in my front yard too! My son and I like to say that it is the Great Wall of Lake Orion used to keep the village idiots out! lol! Gotta have a sense of humor to get through it!

I too am Michigan born and bred but the older I get the longer these winters seem to get. I too snow shoe and ski but it has been so cold all I want to do is dress in warm jammies and curl up with my dogs. I am still getting in my workouts and have made my goal. but where or where is spring? I cant even see over the snowbanks in the front of the house....

I get up and open the windows and let as much sinshine in as I can. That seems to help me get moving and get to the gym.

I love to snowshoe. I bought my pair about 6 years ago and they're still doing fine! I don't go out when the wind chill is below zero like it was for a few days but I love doing that. We live in the country so it's no problem going out in our back area and making my own trail. I also follow snowmobile trails. I wear a headset and listen to music or a radio station and also be sure and take my cell phone with me. We are also big into hockey so we love to go to games and also follow our beloved Red Wings!! Lots of winter activites.

Up here in Mackinaw City there is the Mackinaw Mush with dog sled races and other fun stuff going on. There's always all kinds of winter festivals going on too.

It's also nice to hibernate when it's stormy and cold! Read a good book or watch some movies. I don't mind it compared to the hustle and bussle of spring and summer.

Have you heard of SADD -- I think it means Seasonally affected depression disorder--lack of sunlight is the cause. Switch to full spectrum lighting where you sit the most--by the computer, sewing machine and the reading chair at my house. It helps! If not ask your doctor if something like Zoloft will help. I also agree that suitable cold weather clothes (socks, boots, pants, hats, gloves and scarves, plus a jacket that is long enough to cover your kidneys) makes a big difference! Ice cleats also help. Start with a short walk to the corner and back, gradually lengthen. Pay attention to the wind chill factor. Dont go out more than a few minutes if it is much below zero. Good luck!

Be thankful for the sunny days and know each day we gain two minutes of day light and that my dear means two minutes closer to spring!

This winter is so long! I know that I get out of bed, put on my workout clothes and hit the gym after coffee. I do a couple of classes (spinning) a week and I look forward to seeing my buddies. That motivates me. The days I workout alone, I have to remind myself how good I feel afterwards. No Excuses. I focus on how good I feel the rest of the day. Good luck.

If it's any encouragement - this has been the nastiest winter I can remember in a long time. And I'm a lifelong Michigan girl. And snow lover....until lately.

I feel one of the most important things you can do is own good cold-weather clothing. Ditch the fashion boots and get some well-insulated hiking boots. Pile on the fleece. Forget "style" and stuff a warm hat on your head. Then go out and play!!!! Or at least shovel the sidewalk...

yeah, I would rather gorge on food and then hibernate all winter, but being human, we can't do that! lol!

I know that it is very difficult not being used to the winters, but it really helps to get up in the morning and decide what kind of day your going to have. If it has snowed the day before and we got 6 inches-you can either say that sucks! Or you could say Wow! I get to have a change of pace for my cardio! lol! I'm really working on that this year! It will be spring in a couple of months then you can get outside and get stuff in. Until then-it takes a lot of creativity and a good attitude to make it through the winters!

BTW: Where are you at???

Rose

I agree, this winter has been a long one, but I really do NOT mind the cold as long as there is some sunshine, which we had a lot of today! It just makes me busier in the house....bright and sunny....I volunteer too, so that helps.....at my church mostly.

Barbara .....that's what my friends call me! Never cared for the name Barb.

You just have to do it! The more you face the cold weather head on, the easier it gets.

I do have a treadmill that I use on days like today when I just can't stand it. I also mall walk with each of my daughters one day a week. And I wear a pedometer and challenge myself to take more steps each day.

I use The Biggest Loser exercise videos sometimes and I also take advantage of the wonderful exercises from Coach Nicole here on Spark people.

Winter will be over and you'll be so glad you kept moving:)

Hope that helps.

Hi!

How do you stay motivated to exercise in the winter?!? I am originally from New Mexico and moved to MI from Los Angeles, where I could roller blade to work all year long. I have been here for almost 2 years and this is my second winter - and worst than last year! I have no motivation to go out and even drive to the gym because its cold, the overcast skies drag me down. I have all the tools I need (gym membership, workout vidoes, weights, etc) but no energy or motivation to get off my butt! The summer is a different story - I ride my bike to work, roller blade, swim, etc.! I even like winter sports like skiing and snow shoeing but money has been tight lately! Any suggestions?!?
