Haven't posted in a while. Lots of things happening.

2-12-13 - broke my foot, 2-19-13 had surgery to put a pin in the bone, no walking for 12 weeks! Was in a boot and used a knee cart to get around. Because of the knee cart my arthritic knee kicked in full mode pain! I couldn't do much of anything. It hurt so bad all the time and was REALLY bad when I tried to ride my recumb bike. :( Went to see the ortho dr and my knee was at a 20 degree angle - normal is 7.
10-23-13 - had total knee replacement, weighed in at 268 (low was 234). Had problems with my blood pressure being too low so they kept me in the hospital an extra day with an IV. Came home dizzy and not able to keep anything down. Lost 10 pounds in two weeks after the surgery.
1-8-14 - dr put me on HP meds. Been running high since surgery - 142/92 average. I feel bloated most of the time but I have maintained the 10 pound loss.
1-31-14 - started at FitZone with a 6-week gift certificate. Haven't been going consistently but have been walking at work and using recumb bike at home.
2-24-14 - started tracking food intake again on SP, blogging daily on SP page the results of the day....holding myself accountable.

When I went to my bariatric surgeon in 10-18-13 I had gained again. She told me that the Bariatric Association had released that people 3+ years out should reduce their calorie intake to 1000-1200. She wants me to stay more to below 1100. No surprise there! I have to go back April 14 for a 6-month check-up to see how the weight loss is going. They were sympathic with all the issues thru the year last year but she wants to check my progress since having my knee replacement done.

With this weather my season disorder has been in full gear this winter - all I want is to cuddle in deep and not do ANYTHING! Full hibernation mode. Doesn't make it easy to keep yourself motivated when you are so BLUE. When I get cold, I get chilled to the bone and it takes FOREVER to warm back up. This morning it was -9 on the way to work.

I truly want to get back on the band wagon and get the weight loss going again. Everyone says that RNY is the lazy man's way out but it's not. It takes will and determination. It takes a want to. If I am to succeed it is up to me! :)

God bless,
Theresa

Maybe you could designate a special cabinet for his goodie foods? One that you know is off limits and can ignore. Or ask them to put the goodies in their room if at all possible. It's so hard when stuff like that is available to us. We just want to eat it up!

I know it is going to be hard, her hubby doesn't eat anything healthy, always junk food. My daughter and the baby eat very healthy so that won't be a problem. I really need to be hard on myself and not let my head to the picking of my choices.

Small steps, but everyday!

So today I have healthy meals planned all day along with a couple of protein shakes. I've noticed I'm not getting all of my protein in like I should. I also plan to walk on my breaks today and this is my biggest challenge of the day.

I have my daughter and my 18 month old grandson living with hubby and I. It's hard because they want goodies in the house and I don't. I've managed to get my daughter to hide her goodies so I don't see them. It helps!

Doing good, thank you. I am trying to keep up with my clothes-hard to. I have comparison pictures on my Spark Page and last Blog.
Started out right before my surgery wearing 4xL scrubs at work (I work in the hospital here) and now I am wearing XL and they are now starting to be a little big-but, I am holding off from buying right now.

Greetings,

I hope you are doing well. I run back and forth from this one and Gastric Sparklers. It looks like the other one is more active, though.

I am on soft foods and can have a little meat-chopped up good and mixed with some gravy.
Tuna I have chopped up good and mixed with something to wet it more to make it easier to go down. My protein drinks, however- the only one right now I can deal with is the Unjury's unflavored and I put it in my low sodium V8 juice. I have a sample variety pack coming in from Chilke so maybe I can have those-we will see.
Skim milk helps as protein. Cottage cheese. I had refried beans and I find them a little salty-so, when I eat them I melt some shredded low fat cheese on it to help.
Can only eat 2 tablespoons per meal and have 2 protein drinks per day and the rest is fluids, fluids, fluids and vitamins, et...

Everything went well with the Psych doctor-he went through all the paperwork I had filled out.
I had also included a print out of all the books that I had read on the subject, websites I checked out, etc...So I had looked into it alot for while before starting on the 6 month program.
Plus, in April they had weighed me in at 281.0 -in September I weighed in at 266.0. They tell you here to lose 5% and so I had already done that.

Next I have a support group to go to-which has to be the day I am off from work. I work night shift at the hospital and sleep during the daytime.Nov 5th I am off and it is also a day for the support group-so hubby and I are going to it. He is my support system at home.

Then I have my Pap Smear to get (I haven't had one in 15 years-so it is due)-that is on Nov 14th-the day after my birthday. Then on Nov 20th it is the Pulmonologist to go through his check up to see if I need to have the sleep study or not-as I do not snore and I have no trouble sleeping. But, I cannot sleep at night so it will have to be a daytime study.

Then the first week of Dec it will be my Dietician and my PA.
So with this progession I am thinking either the end of December or in January is when the surgery will be.

As soon as they do give me the date I can set up my FMLA-family leave from work. I work at the hospital that I will be having my surgery at.

HI Carol

Hope you got your clearance from the psychologist. Do you have a date set yet? My insurance had the 6 month jump through the hoops program also. I had the lapband done 2 years ago on Dec. 13. We are glad to have you join us. Let me know how everything is gong.

Beth

Hey where is everyone???

Well, things are moving along for me and I get to see the Psych doctor today at 1pm. I was off work Wednesday night so it won't be too bad. I work the night shift and will be working Thursday night. Oh, well-it has to be done for the clearance.

Getting there. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Greetings;

I hope that everyone is doing well. I went for my Info Sessions on Oct 9th and 11th and they went well-I am still tired from being up at that time of day as I work the night shift there at the same hospital. On Monday-tomorrow I will be going to the Nutritionist at which time I will be given further appointments and I can see how things are moving along in this process.

I am on D3-prescription strength now as my PCP found my levels to be extremely low. Seems that alot of people that live up here in Upper New York State have that problem. So, I just started my D3 yesterday-I take one tab once a week. It is 59,000 iu's at a time.
After 12 weeks I go back and get my blood work done again to check it.

Moving right along here. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Greetings Everyone;

I am new here to this forum. I just recently started my WLS journey. On Oct 9th I go for my first Info Session. The second one is on Oct 11th and then my dietician is on the 15th.
I have already been reading alot of books on the subject and talking to a lot of people up here that have already had the procedure (RNY). So, I have been doing my research.

My insurance company said that they would cover the RNY only for me as that is the procedure that would be the best for me. Our insurance here has you go for the 6 month period before the surgery can happen.

So, I will see how things are moving along tomorrow. I go from 3p-5p (need to be there at 2:30pm). emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi Amanda, WOO HOO!!!. Now how about an update. : ) I had the lapband done back in Dec. 2010. Went and had my weigh in today and had lost 1 lb. But not that I am out for the summer, I am ready to lose more than one pound a month. I teach in the public school system and stay under a lot of stress most of the year which seems to slow down my weight loss. Ok enough of my excuses. Have a great day.

Hey Everyone,

I'm assuming you mean for staying on track. The best thing for me is writing everything down. It doesn't matter what I'm eating I keep track of it. Sip, sip sip all day long. Get in as much water as you can. It keeps you hydrated and full, so you can't hold a lot of other things.

I hope everyone has continued success on your wt loss journey.

Hey Everyone,

I'm new to the team, but not to sparks. This team was recommended by another team member, so I thought I would try it out. I hope everyone is doing well. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you.

I have a surgery date!!!!
Feb 16th

I'm going to have RNY gastric bypass.
I feel so overwhelmed. I'm very excited but at the same time panic is trying to sneak it's way into my emotions. I have plenty of time to get nervous about the surgery itself. Right now I'm just going to enjoy being very excited. LOL

Sounds like you have a great attitude. Glad you are here. Hope you will post often. What procedure are you looking at? How much will you need to lose?

I had gastric bypass in 2002. I lost 230 pounds and have maintained between 210 and 220 of it for six years. It is a new wonderful life.

The nutrition planner here can be very helpful for tracking nutriends, protein, etc. The teams are also very beneficial. There are sure to be several that match your interests.

Hope you will post often!

Hello Everyone!
My name is Karla. I'm a 33 year mother of 2 little girls. I'm in the beginning stages of my WLS journey. I have already seen a dietitian and have my education sessions scheduled. My next appointment in Oct 7th. I'm down about 4% at this point and very excited (and scared). I have tried so many times on my own unsuccessfully to lose weight. After a lot of research I truly believe this is my last chance.
I have a positive attitude about everything right now. Which is not normal for me but I am ready for my life to change for the better. I know it's going to be a lot of hard work but I'm ready.

Hi Melanie!

Welcome! Sounds as if you are very motivated! I wish you a happy journey before and on the other side!

I had a gastric bypass in 2002. I lost 230 pounds! I've maintained 215 of the loss for almost 6 years! There REALLY is a better life on the other side!

How much do you hope to lose? I'm next door in Ohio! Hi neighbor!

Hey everyone, my name is Melanie and I am from Pittsburgh, PA. I started my journey towards gastric bypass in March of this year (after years of research). I have completed my 6 months of pre-op requirements, and I have recieved insurance approval(they will cover 100%). My last hurdle prior to surgery is an appointment with a hematologist on November 4th. I then have a pre-op appointment with my surgeon, and my surgery is scheduled for Monday November 16th. I will be having my surgery at UPMC MaGee Hospital here in Pittsburgh. I cannot wait to begin my new life!! I look forward to getting the oppertunity to get to know each of you.

My surgery is scheduled in two days! I'm trying to stay calm, at least I'm not nervous. I was at my sister's side when she had hers done in June of 2008. I can hardly wait for the butterfly to emerge!

Hello,

How are you doing? Are you out of the hospital? I had gastric surgery two years ago and lost 130 pounds. I too had some complications after surgery and still struggle with low blood sugar but other wise feel great! Hope you are doing well!

Hello team! I am so glad to have all of you. I am currently in the hospital, day 5 after RNY. I am having some complications but I should be in the clear to go home in a few days. Currently I am not taking any pain medication and I am feeling great because my friend (goingtobea12) introduced me to spark people. I feel strong, able to make this important change in my life, and excited to share it with people who are going through the same thing. Thank you for being here!emoticon

Gastric Bypass Surgery was the best thing I could have done at his point in my life. I had my surgery in July and have lost 92 Lbs and my knees aren't near as painful as they were before and I have seen a big improvement in the amount of pain that I suffer due to Ankylosing Spondylitis, I also have discs that are degenerating, In fact in the future I may end up with my spine fusing in some places due to the bony spur growths, I am only 39 and am not going to just give up so I had the surgery just before I turned 39. I also had sleep apnea and I didn't know it until I had to do the sleep study, I haven't had to use the sleep mask since first of November. I did not realize how much time I had lost just from the sleep apnea until I no longer have to use the machine. Even if I had never lost any weight it was worth the surgery just to get the CPAP machine. I have finally gotten my life back. I would have never known about the sleep apnea if I hadn't started the requirements for the GBS. I have had no complications and I feel like a new person. Best of luck to you!!!

My name in Theresa. I am married, mother of two, grandmother of four. I work full time and a Stampin' Up! demonstrator part time.

I was having a lot of trouble with my knee and found that I have severe osteoarthritis. The ortho surgeon said there are two problems with having a knee replacement...my age (too young) and my weight (WAY too heavy). He suggested WLS to remove the excess weight. He gave me a shot of cortisone that lasted a WHOLE day and a half! Most days my knee is tolerable but I have not had a pain-free day in about six months!

I did attend a WL seminar, met with the surgeon, have an Apnea Link scheduled for later in January, a meeting set up with a dietitian and a phone call in to the psychotherapist.

God bless,
Theresa

Thank you so much for your words! I have begun to realize that too. They just have no idea what it's like living as a morbidly obese person. Noone knows what it's like unless you've been there. I KNOW this is the best choice for me to have a good future. I didn't come to this decision lightly. I did years of research. What I've heard most of people is that I am taking the easy way out. They have no idea! I am going to have to rely on lovely people like you for my support. Thanks!!

Do not listen to those negative influences! When my mother decided to have the Bypass, no one supported her except for me... It changed her life and she is a much MUCH happier person! When I had the band she supported me as well. Your family and friends may not agree with what you are doing, but when you have it and your whole life is changed, they will love the new you. Besides, you are doing this for yourself... NOT for them. You respect their opinions, but you are a mature adult who can make her own informed decisions! Go you and CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Hi! I'm a newbie. I am supposed to have my surgery within a year. I am getting nervous though because I don't have any supports. People that I have told think I am crazy for doing it or think it's unnecessary. :-( I hope to find some really good supports here on sparkpeople!

I don't exercise the way I should either, but I do stay within the boundaries of my surgery guidelines. That helps a lot. The one thing I have let go of is the guilt that I used to pile upon myself when I "failed". I do NOT look upon it now as failure. It is just life. Get back up girl.........and live.

I feel stalled at this time. But my schedule has been rather hectic the last couple of weeks, so I just can't be everywhere doing everything, so exercise had to slide a bit. I'm going to get back to it during the day at work, then my regular life won't get in the way, and I have NO excuses!!

I'm trying to stay the course as well!!

I see that you and I started about the same weight. I don't know when you posted this thread, but it caught my attention. I remember being at a stall for several weeks (months even) but I knew I was doing what I was instructed to do so I just continued the course. All of a sudden the pounds began to drop again. I too cannot handle eggs so well. I don't do milk either, but can use International Coffees SF FF liquid creamer. I have gone from 255 to 110 now.......and never ever thought this would be possible. I thank God every single day for this opportunity. Good luck to you. Stay the course.

Thanks, I wish you the best with your wt loss, too! Let me know the details - what you ate the first week or two? What you're eating now? What exercises are you doing? I love the details!

I'm so sorry, how stupid of me - I forgot to ask the most important Q. How are you doing? How do you feel? I hope you are feeling good & hopefully not too sore! GOOD LUCK!

Hi, I thought maybe everyone had left this post & moved else where.

I'm doing pretty good so far I think. I'm holding 303 lbs(don't worry if my wt jumps/drops, I'm on water pills - if I go somewhere I usually don't take them till I get back - if it's not to late, some days they don't get took-wt gain!)

Sipping is getting easier, waiting 1/2hr before/after meals to drink is close to a habit, with juice/coffee/milk/water I'm getting my 8c. fluid, I eat protein first, & doing pretty good remembering fruits & vegs.

Working on not using a straw, and I need to get in somekind of exercise/moving!

T2UL8R, Louise.

My Dr is in the process of getting it authorized thru the medical card. However I've been researching for a while. In fact, I've set up a program like for myself so I will be better pre-pared when it comes down to the last month or so. From what I've read, it may take up to 6 mo or a yr before you get a surgery date.

So my program is something like this...
Stage 1 - log down everything ate or drank for 1 wk - DONE!
Stage 2 - Eat 15+g protein/day, 3+ meals/day, 8+c water/day, - no more than 5g sugar/food, 10g sugar/meal, 100 carbs/day - Sip water(not 1/2 hr before/after) - Move 3+ X wk 15+min ea X. - Buy 1 can decafe coffee, 2 wk supply food & 2 wk suppy hi-protein powder, drink, bars.
This stage will last aprox. 1 month +/-.

Stage 3 - Eat 30+g protein/day, 5+ meals/day, - No more than 50 carbs/day - Move 5+ X wk 20-30 min ea X. Continue the rest. Re-study info & add anything new.
This stage will last aprox. 1 month +/-

Stage 4 - Eat 50+g protein/day, 6+ meals/day - No more than 25 carbs/day, Move 5-7 X wk 30+ min ea X. Re-study info & add anything that's left to practice.
This stage will last till the surgery!

Does anyone have any comments on this program?

Suzanne - welcome to the thread!

Cindy - thanks for the well wishes. I am truly getting better. Dr says to add probiotics and something called IP6+Isonitril for the immunity boost. Also gave me another round of antibiotics!

I'm definitely on the upswing now...my husband says I've come back to life and I'm more like I used to be when we were first married! How about that ???!!! He likes that I have more energy and get up and go. Of course, I still have days/times that I am so tired I want to lay down and sleep all the time, but those are getting fewer and farther between.

So yeah, I am finding my inner butterfly again!

Cathy-sorry you are still getting abscesses! You have really had a time! I went back to work 6/21 and would have gone back sooner but the energy (or lack of) level held me back. Oh well.

I am searching for a personal trainer this week and continuing my water aerobics and/or swim walking on my lunch hours at least 4x a week.

Hang in there! Awesome weight loss for you!

VitaminCindy - I'm still lurking out here. Doing better, my surgery was 5/3, with the repair on 5/4. I'm back at work full time, still having problems getting abscesses, so going to see my regular doctor to see if there is something else that I can do to help. They keep telling me it is because my body cannot fight anything now and I need to build up my immune system (like how??!!!).

Anyhow, down 47 pounds as of last week's weigh in, so I'm progressing right along. You'll do fine, and I know that you didn't have all the problems that I did, so that is GREAT!!

Welcome to the group!

Cathy

Hi All! I remember Cathy from another board. She had her surgery a few weeks before mine. My Roux En Y was 5/22/07 and here I am today, glad I had it but still missing salads. Yes, that's odd! LOL
I am just now starting to feel like I have lost weight. Of course it all started in my face and then my legs. Hello-how about the belly!? ACK!
I just got back from swim walking during my lunch hour. Glad I work near my gym. I was told 30 minutes of swim walking=1 hr of dry land walking. Considering the heat, I am loving this! I usually do water aerobics 4x a week but this week we have church commitments every night til Friday so I am making my lunch hour my workout time.
Still having trouble getting enough protein in each day. I am supposed to have 65 grams and I am SOOO sick of the Isopure. I may have to just add some fruit to it and go double strength to get it done each day. I have to schedule with my nutritionist soon to discuss this. I already have thin hair so I don't need to lose much if I can help it.

Sorry for the ramble but I am so excited to find this group!

well, i'm finally home!!! i got home yesterday afternoon. 4.5 days in the hospital. they were able to do 90% lap. but couldn't get enough gas in to me to finish closing so i have a small incision on my rt. side. 4 total incisions so not bad. not near as much pain from this surgery as from my total hysterectomy! my pulmanologist was rather concerned due to my high bmi but no problems related to that, but i did have to do breathing treatments 2-3 x's every day--yuck! the biggest hold-up was that they did not have a bed in the bariatric center post surgery. i was set to spend one night in icu but ended up staying there until THURSDAY AM! they babied me too much in icu and didn't keep me watered enough. but once i got down to the bariatric floor i was on fire!!! IT IS SO GOOD TO BE HOME!!! a little weak and a little sore but feeling good over all. no pain med since wed. other than children's motrin. DID NOT LIKE THE LIQUID LORTAB! gave me rebound headaches. they didn't weigh me when i left the hospital so my first weigh in will be mon. when i see my doc. of course i'll post that as soon as i get it! thanks to everyone for you thoughts, prayers and support. i could not do this without you!

cathy, glad to hear you're healing. keep it up!

I have finally begun to lose more weight. I have dropped 12 pounds in 2 months by eating very small meals every 3 hours. I eat 1000 calories for two weeks then move up to 1200 calories for one week. Sometimes we know our bodies better than the doctors. I never got below 189 after my wls, the doctors said it was due to my disability. I wanted a smaller stomach, but have learned that the wls is JSUT A TOOL AND IT IS UP TO ME!

Cheryl - thanks! Yes, that is encouraging. I know that the problems now will seem worth it about 6 months from now. It is just hard now! The healing from the second surgery is so much slower, and the fact that they inserted and left a feeding tube in my 'original' stomach does not help. It isn't being used, but it is there nonetheless, and it is quite a nuisance! I'm hoping that they will remove it sooner than the 6 wks that they told me it would be there. Still not sure why it is there since it has never been used. Guess I'll find out on the 21st when I go back for my check up.

Thanks for your encouraging words.

Cathy, I hope you hae smooth sailing from here on out. It will get better.

I hope this encourages you both...I am now down 105 pounds since my surgery 9/12/06. The difference is amazing to me. I still get surprised when I see my reflection.

Hello all - I made it home from the hospital on 5/9, my first surgery was on 5/3. On 5/4 they checked, and I had a leak, so had to be taken back in for a repair. Ended up in ICU until Sunday, then back on track starting Monday. I'm slowly healing, and getting some strength back, it is just very hard after 2 surgeries (1st laparoscopic (sp?); 2nd open). Just wanted to check in to let you know.

Hello to all. I am a new member who is just starting the long process of getting the RNY. I guess it will take 6 months to a year to get a surgery date. I currently have 200 pounds to drop and am excited about starting this journy. I know there will be times that I am frustrated and I know I will approiciate all the insight i can get from my friends here who have gone through this process.

Hi all. I joined the team some time ago, but never posted here. My RNY is scheduled for 5/3, so I am really close. I have 110-120 to lose. Pray for me as I am a high risk patient for complications due to having previously had a Hiatal Hernia repair that has to be undone to do the RNY.
