Grateful today
* For the incredible winds that swept through our area
* For seeing the leaves run races up the street, as if in joyous play!
* For lunch with a very special friend
* For organic beer (Bison IPA, if anyone is interested)
* For NOT finishing our tree today, and being ok with that...tomorrow...(again, how nice to be retired!)
* For finding a lovely video on You Tube...that you can all see tomorrow on the new thread.

Finding the courage to go to the places that scare us cannot happen without compassionate inquiry into the workings of ego. The Buddha taught that flexibility and openness bring strength and that running from groundlessness weakens us and brings pain. But do we understand that becoming familiar with the running away is the key? Openness doesn’t come from resisting our fears but from getting to know them well.
-- Pema Chodron, The Places That Scare You

Good morning,

A busy day ahead, but taking time first~~

~ Sherrie's profound reflection in Rebecca's gratitude space: "suffering that allows appreciation of freedom from suffering"

~ speaking of suffering, this amazing program: a "happiness course" at Stanford University which began in 2007, after four student suicides rocked Stanford the previous academic year. "Their class is not just about avoiding catastrophe," said a former student. "It's about promoting wellness so you don't get to catastrophe. This class isn't just for people who aren't happy. It can improve the quality of life for anyone. Absolutely anyone."
www.dailygood.org/more.php?n=4811

~ an active day yesterday and hoping to rack up some aerobic time today before going to the dentist

~ oven warming to make Oatmeal Blueberry Walnut muffins as soon as I finish this

~ finding an important work fax yesterday evening so that I don't have to ask the office to send it again

Blessed be,

Gratitudes on the almost last day of November
* For the continuing, tho fading, colors of fall
* Seeing lots of sparkling lights appearing on houses and trees
* For being almost finished with Christmas tree decorating. Gonna be beautiful!
* For hubby's neices and daughters able to join us for the first Christmas gathering ever for his side of the family!
* For surviving a very difficult afternoon with the oldest granddaughter (age 9) who is really struggling with her mom's health issues.

Please send good thoughts, energy and prayers her way. For the past couple of weeks, she's been acting out terribly with me, and today was screaming at me that she hates it that she has to be with me on her mom's chemo days. She is begging her mom to take her along with her...and despite the fact that she says she is "fine", I know she is really scared and worried about her mom and what can potentially happen in their family. My DIL, grand daughter and I had a long discussion tonight, and hopefully came to some resolution. It is breaking my heart to see the little girl in such pain...not to mention my DIL...and to feel so helpless in the situation. We all, but right now especially, my granddaughter need prayer. My husband and I have great plans for her this weekend, and I want her to be filled with laughter and love....rather than pain and rage like she was today.

Today, my gratitudes run deep, and I'm grateful that I can come here to share just a few of them

-Kitten snuggles and purrs through the night, with a special snuggle from my Siamese baby girl, Cleo, who has been a bit more reserved than the other two
-All three kittens coming along nicely, getting more comfortable day by day, and learning more about what is allowed and what is not
-Intentions of going downstairs for an overdue strength training workout before I leave
-New incentive program started at work yesterday; my sweetie is doing it with me so it will be much more fun (MINIMUM of 30 minutes of daily exercise 30 days out of 40 between now and early January)
-Having a great job, while so many struggle to even find a job
-Having an abundance of food, while there are so many who are hungry
-FINALLY getting an appliance repair company referral so I can get work done on dishwasher and refrigerator

Make it an excellent day!!!

Today I am grateful for plans coming together for a meet up in San Francisco with Maha and AT.
For seeing that AT has her tree up and work in progress. For a delightful lunch with AT yesterday at a new to me restaurant that she loves. The food was ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh so good.
For Pancho and his tale of Occupy Oakland, thankful that he wasn't run over by the unruly crowd.
For a thursday date to celebrate retirement with fellows that I worked with many moons ago - at a free luncheon. For all that I have and have been given, for all that I see in my future and for the blessings of our community.

Much love

If you want to be a rebel, be kind.
-- Pancho Ramos Stierle, iconic figure who participated in Occupy Oakland

Good morning,

I'm here and have this to report~~

~ I'm still weeping after reading Pancho's story in my daily good news "newspaper"
www.dailygood.org/view.php?sid=127

~ YIPPEE!!! on plans to intersect and play with Kathy and Vivian

~ GOOD NEWS for Ann (I haven't shared this with her yet) -- my girlfriend says that on our way to the New Year's Retreat, we can head to Santa Cruz the day before and stay overnight with a friend we're picking up there so that Ann and I can meet there for a leisurely coming together!!!

~ daily afternoon entertainment raptly watching the juicy 10 hour-long tapes in the Joseph Campbell Mythos series for the "umpteenth" time -- five on The Shaping of Our Mythic Tradition and five on The Shaping of the Eastern Tradition

~ looking forward to meeting with a New Moon Sister friend over coffee this afternnon (for her to return the loaned DVD, Loreena McKennitt Nights at the Alhambra, which I want to take with me to SF)

~ spent lots of money at Whole Foods yesterday BECAUSE I bought lots of case lots, which they always offer at 10% discount, stocking the cupboards to overflowing; I also LOVE the bulk area of WF for good prices, freshness, and great variety; and the well-priced "365" private label items (organic only though)

Blessed be,

Grateful tonight
* That I really will be asleep by midnight!
* For a great lunch with Vivian, planning a trip to visit with Maha in San Francisco
* That Stephanie has three new little ones to love...knowing the joy and laughter they will bring into her life!
* For memories of the visit Ann and I had while *I* was frantically shopping for the needy one Christmas
* For returning items today at several stores without any difficulty - Absolutely no line at Target or Wallmart or Ross! (Guess we did the opposite of Black Friday, Charcoal Saturday, ?? Sunday and Cyber Monday by taking things BACK!)

Today, I am grateful for so many things, including:

-The ability to at least read everybody's gratitudes on this team, even if my computer sends my posts to cyberspace
-Adopting three kittens, after a trial run of agreeing to at least foster them through the Thanksgiving holiday so we could see how my partner did with kittens
-The balance in life - my dear friend/second mother is dying of cancer, but three kittens start their new little lives with us
-The strong feeling that this was meant to be, as the shelter had only three kittens, and each of them are similar to cats I've had in the past (a Siamese, a tuxedo kitty and a caramel tabby that looks like my Lady Gwendolyn (Gwendolyn is my profile pic at the moment))
-This computer at work that I can use for backup until I replace mine at home

Have an excellent Monday!!

We cannot hope to build a better world without improving ourselves.
-- Marie Curie, Nobel winning chemist via Healthy Reflections

Good morning,

So much to be thankful for...here's the tip of the iceburg~~

~ SP Healthy Reflections, always worth reading, particularly struck me this morning in its focus on using our skills to help others (I'm going to paste in the commentary below)
~ Kathy's emoticon holiday gathering -- FOUR generations!

~ a yogini friend just emailed some wonderful photos from our time living at the SF Integral Yoga Institute in the early-mid 80's, as well as some Hawaii photos

~ coffee, steamed milk and a spot of sugar this morning (all tracked of course hahaha)

~ "I can and I will" the title of a blog scrolling to the right...obviously intended to be my mantra today!

Blessed be,
xox
Maha

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS: Are you connecting with the world around you?

It's normal to be concerned about the effect you have on the world. You may look for opportunities to help others, but are often unsure where to start. Here's a good strategy: Make it your business to build people and help them improve themselves (and that includes yourself). You can have a much stronger effect on people this way than if you did hundreds of hours of secluded community service.

Start by improving yourself and developing the strengths that can set an example for others. Then use your strengths to help others develop their own. You don't even have to wait! What are you already good at? Take that skill and put it to use for the good of your community, or teach it to someone else. For a better world, do less FOR other people, and do more WITH them.

It is the second day after the official day of thanks giving in the USA. And although not expressing my gratitudes here on this site, I have expressed them repeatedly over the past several days....

* For my family, and the joy of having four generations here to share a meal on Thursday. VERY special on this particular year.
* For the food prepared with love and thanks giving...including the farmers that raised the organic grains, veggies and fruits, for the turkey who gave his life for us, for the laborers who harvested them, prepared them and for my family who contributed the dishes to make the meal complete.
* For our traditional day after...while others are pounding the sidewalks and store aisles looking for bargains, we heat up leftovers to share with friends. A marvelous tradition that expands each year
* For dinner reservations tonight at our favorite local restaurant. Celebrating hubby's birthday with a free dinner (on the 30th day when the coupon expires!). Just the two of us.
* For being able to get shoes on (albeit loose ones) for the first time in almost 2 weeks!
* For feeling motivated once again, to get the eating back under control.

Today I'm grateful for...

All that's right in my life and here.
The good health my family and I enjoy.
A husband that cares about my happiness.
Feeling loved.
DD's happiness.
The willingness to let go of negative feelings and focus my energy on loving-kindness.
Entering 140'sville on my way toward 130'sville.
The willingness to eat mindfully.
Choices.

Being extravagantly generous is an enchanting way to become holy and Godlike, for God is awesomely extravagant — as is revealed by even a casual glance at creation.
-- Edward Hays, The Great Escape Manual

Good morning,

Kim, how wonderful to see you here...and thanks for those great quotes. I have the greatest respect for the brilliant G.K. Chesterton. Ahhhhhhhhhhh Bob, the Gardener's Meditation is exquisite. And welcome home to you as well!

Having finished the day with the practice of meditation and with minimal melancholy, I give deep thanks this morning~~

~ as a prison volunteer I bow in gratitude to the loving service of Edward Hays, a recently retired Catholic priest. He last served as a chaplain to the Kansas State Prison. Hays notes that "more than two million people are incarcerated in the United States. But millions more are locked up in anger, fear, impatience, prejudice, religion, old age, and death."

~ my latest delightful sojourn in "Love Is A Place"

~ an amazing walk down memory lane looking at photos from the San Francisco Integral Yoga Institute, where I lived for almost 4 yeears (part of the website devoted to the retreat in Santa Barbara):

(there's only one photo of me, with my closest male friend in the world feeding me something [dearest departed Vivekan, who died at 47 of brain cancer], below the white robed smiling Rishi with his two children at his feet)

~ a provocative and dark film with Colin Firth, A Single Man, excellent, though probably not the right selection for yesterday

~ a wonderful conversation yesterday with Diana, my soul sister in Maui

Blessed be,

Garden Meditation

Let us give thanks for a bounty of people.

For children who are our second planting, and though they grow like weeds and the wind too soon blows them away, may they forgive us our cultivation and fondly remember where their roots are.

Let us give thanks:

For generous friends…with hearts…and smiles as bright as their blossoms;

For feisty friends, as tart as apples;

For continuous friends, who, like scallions and cucumbers, keep reminding us that we’ve had them;

For crotchety friends, sour as rhubarb and as indestructible;

For handsome friends, who are as gorgeous as eggplants and elegant as a row of corn, and the others, as plain as potatoes and so good for you;

For funny friends, who are as silly as Brussel sprouts and as amusing as Jerusalem artichokes;

And serious friends as unpretentious as cabbages, as subtle as summer squash, as persistent as parsley, as delightful as dill, as endless as zucchini and who, like parsnips, can be counted on to see you through the winter;

For old friends nodding like sunflowers in the eveningtime and young friends coming on as fast as radishes;

For loving friends, who wind around us like tendrils and hold us, despite our blights, wilts and witherings;

And finally, for those friends now gone, like gardens past that have been harvested, but who fed us in their times that we might have life thereafter.

For all these we give thanks.

Rev. Max Coots

Thanks to all you blossoms, sunflowers, and especially you apples! I see you all as eggplants and corn, and have a beautiful garden to visit because of you. With winter coming on I'll be counting on having plenty of parsnips here!

Your bud the rhubarb and sometimes Jerusalem artichoke, who with a lot of parsley will sprout back after this wilt. take care, bob

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.

Happy day, hour, moment of giving thanks! Happy thanks giving life!

Gratitude runs broad and deep~~

~ creating my own day my way, including baking savory (winter squash and beets) and sweet (oatmeal, raisin, walnut cookies), making a pasta dish with kale and beet greens, watching a movie (Colin Firth, A Single Man)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!

TODAY IS OUR DAY!!!

I thank God for everything that we've been blessed with, WAY too numerous to place here.

And I wish all of you a safe and happy holiday and give you this thought:

"Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful."

Thankful today
* That I am retired...meaning I can do everything for the family gathering tomorrow at my leisure. No taking the day off or rushing home from work on Weds, and staying up til 3:00 a.m. to get everything ready. All that is left to do is to get the turkey in at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, iron the linens and set the table (afraid to do it tonight due to frisky Santo Piano!), slice cukes and celery for munchies, and make the mashed potatoes and gravy. I think I can handle it!
* That I have family
* For a good night's sleep last night
* For my foot, which despite the battering it has taken, and although still swollen and uncomfortable, is still functional
* For having NO desire to bombard the stores on Black Friday, Charcoal Saturday, Sunday and now Cyber Monday (?) to buy things I don't need.

It's been so long since I've been among you. My computer is on the fritz and I bought a new one (for which I am thankful) but haven't had time to set it up in the midst of end-of-the-semester blitz. So here I am at my mama and papa's house ... on their computer ... giving thanks with all of you today.

This afternoon I am thankful for ....

* happiness (which even my mother notices)

* clarity (I rented an apartment in Little Rock starting in January and will live by myself, which I love) for the last six months of school

* my children, their father, my parents, siblings and their wives, nieces & nephews

* my parents good health in spite of aging (78 and 82 y/o)

* my dear friends who keep me sane (Maha I hope you count me as one of your tribe as I do you)

* hair color

* thinking about the future (aka what to do after I graduate) ... so many possibilities to contemplate, so many factors to consider

As always, a life worth living, possibilities and freedom to choose

Shine,
Sandra

How do we cultivate the conditions for joy to expand? We train in staying present. In sitting meditation, we train in mindfulness and maitri: in being steadfast with our bodies, our emotions, our thoughts. We stay with our own little plot of earth and trust that it can be cultivated, that cultivation will bring it to its full potential. Even though it’s full of rocks and the soil is dry, we begin to plow this plot with patience. We let the process evolve naturally.
-- Pema Chodron

Good morning,

I'm so happy to be here among you, solid in this important practice~~

~ receiving Pema Chodron's wonderful Quote of the Week this morning reminding me of the privilege of attending the juicy teachings with her last fall

~ loving Kathy's TRIPLE thanks giving, and adding my own, for DIL's MUGA scan coming back with perfect results yesterday

~ deep thanksgiving for a dear friend who has made it possible for me to spend Winter Solstice with my *tribe* in San Francisco Bay Area

~ the joyful anticipation of seeing if there is a way to rendezvous with dear friends Kathy, Vivian and Ann while in NCA

~ a productive and satisfying meeting with work project director yesterday

~ inspired by Kathy's addition to Pat's blog about not having her children about her on Thanksgiving (see my link on yesterday's gratitudes)

Today, my gratitudes include:

-Being back here with all of you. I've really been here, as I've gotten to open my post, type it all up, and then ... poof ... off it went. Don't understand because I can post on message boards, but this one just really messes with my soon-to-be-replaced dinosaur of a computer
-My work computer, which I've now decided to use right before leaving work so I can actually POST here ... grateful to have backup
-An excellent strength training workout at lunch today
-A successful Harvesters food drive at work - this is the third and final year I'm coordinating the drive for the entire company
-The opportunity to "foster" three adorable kittens through the Thanksgiving long weekend, giving us a chance to see if we want to adopt one, two or all three - or none
-A better night of sleep last night; the first two nights were shaky as we have a newly weaned 7-week old (the youngest of the three) and she's been pretty active at night
-The laughter, play and cuteness that comes with kittens
-The joy that I get from knowing that I celebrate the true spirit of ThanksGiving on a daily basis ... right here (and/or on Rebecca's message board)
-My many thanks to each of you, for all that you offer in your own special ways

Today I'm grateful for...

The gift of today.
All that's right in my life and here.
The good health my family and I enjoy.
Finding silverware that DH and I both like.
New sneakers. Now I have to break them in. Ouch.
An early morning walk that is becoming a habit.
Lunch date with DH.
The willingness to plan ahead and monitor what I eat.
The willingness to continue to make lifestyle changes.
Choices.
So many blessings.

Here's to our extraordinary selves Maha!

On this Tuesday, I am grateful for:
- the last day of my work-week
- coming home to a clean house
- packed breakfast and lunch
- time to prep prior to family for T-day
- all the multitude of blessings we have and continue to receive

In case, I don't 'see' you all until after... Happy ThanksGiving to you!

OK. Just to clear things up. I WAS still up until 3:00 a.m. But house is shiney. Everything was ready for my dad, and I was too excited to sleep! Now, it is before midnight, it has been a long day, and I am headed to bed...

BUT...I must at least mention some of the many, many things I am grateful for on this Monday night! (not Tuesday yet!)

* My dad's safe flight
* Escort passes which enabled us to meet him when he got off the plane, rather than past the security gates AND to see his smile when he saw us, like "in the old days"!
* Laughter shared at an Italian restaurant which really had lousy food...
* After watching Slumdog Millionaire for the first time, recognition that my life has been SO comfortable, and that I have suffered so little, by comparison
* The inherited gift of optimism, even during the "worst" of my times...which again, has been nothing.

Thankful I was sleeping at 2:40 when AT was still posting in this community. I guess the system does change the time, etc.

Thankful for a good nights sleep and a hot cuppa cuppa this morning. Cool after some rain again, but peaceful and calm.

Thankful for all I have been given and choose to use wisely, except the times when my mind or body just go off in their own direction - seemingly quite often right now.

Today I'm thankful for:

- an unexpected chance to FB chat with DH even if only for a minute.

- loving feedback from a family HFH is working with.

- the quiet that I'm about to disrupt to wake up the two littlest ones and the noise that will follow.
