I am organizing a 5K in Provo on June 27th. Visit www.cucil.org and click on the news tab, or search for CUCIL on www.active.com for more information.
CUCIL's 5K Run, Walk, & Roll raises funds to help people with disabilities.

I will be rooting for you guys! I have a Karate Tournament that I am volunteering for that same day down town, so I hope that I can come out and cheer people on for a bit. How exciting. I wish you luck!!!

So the salt lake marathon is less than two weeks away. i was wondering how many people are still planning on participating? I'm doing the half. My first race ever, and I am already getting butterfly's.

Thanks for the info.LEISABM! emoticon

I did go on to the website and it looks like I could register for the 5K and walk the entire time instead of doing the half marathon...I think that is more up my alley. But, in time, I would looooove to complete a half and then a complete marathon! I just need to keep putting one foot in front of the other!

Thanks, and best of luck to ya'll!

I don't know if you can walk, but I think so. I think there is a time limit that you have to finish the race in. So as long as you get done in time, I assume you can walk or run

Here is kind of a silly question...

I am absolutely new at the whole world of marathons so I am clueless!

Anyhoo, I was wondering if this particular marathon had to be ran the entire time or can you walk and jog in intervals?

My joints are awful so I have to be careful not to jar them too much; running on pavement would be brutal!

But I am interested in the SLC half; I think being registered to do it would give me extra motivation and give me a goal to work and train for.

Best wishes ya'll!

yes I do train outside...I did all summer and only went treadmill during the cold winter... lately I've been getting outside 1-2 times a week... as for distance I have run up to 13.2 on a long run though haven't in awhile... right now I'm 5-7 and increasing! As for gel I don't like them... I like the jelly beans better emoticon thank you for the input! STEPH6467

Prettypilot, you will definitely want to train outside a little before attempting the half, especially if you've never run it before. Even if you only do the once a week long runs outside, you will feel a lot more prepared for the distance.

And I second the suggestion for bringing gels. Divine has some snacks at the end, but only hydration stops during the race. I went through about 4 gels IIRC.

yes it is a dead line that helps I turn 38 and my goal was to run a half by then so Im signing up but also for me and my health to prove I can do anything almost done with what I wanted to be when I grow up lol
so next step is getting me fit and healthy and doing my goal at 38 and a full one before I'm 40

I'm planning on running the slc half marathon too. It will be my first race. I have run quite a bit, but have never ran a race because I can never find a partner who will commit to running with me. But this year, I just decided I couldn't wait any longer. I was tired of letting the opportunities slip by. So i am going to do it by myself if I have to.

Here is the races' website. http://www.saltlakecitymarathon.com/
Just google some walking half marathon training schedules and just pick one you think you can stick to. Keep in mind though that 3 months is not a lot of time to train and you should definitely do the half, not the full. If you really want to train correctly (to run or walk), maybe you should pick a race that is a little farther out than the SL one. Go to www.saltlakerunningco.com They have a calendar with all the races in Utah for the year. Good luck!

Wa hoo!! All of you are awesome! You all make me want to go out and start another training program! I ran the SL Half last year and it was amazing. It's a great, easy, fun course. Word of advice though, plan on bringing some gels or something to eat because they (Devine, the group that manages the event) don't feed you at all. At least they didn't last year. I was expecting something around mile 5 or 6 and got zilch. I was ready to chew my own arm off. Good luck to everyone on all your races!

I'm with you....running outside in the cold does not seem fun at all! I am training for the Ogden Half Marathon though and I hope to get accepted into the St. George Marathon this year...applied last year with no luck :-(

I ran the SLC half in 2007 with my best friend. It was a BLAST! I thought about running it again this year but I *just* started jogging again 2 weeks ago. I don't think I can build up to 13 miles in 13 weeks. I'm also intimidated about the idea of running 10 and 12 mile long training runs in March. BRR! In 2007 the race was in June which made for ideal training weather.

A friend of mine who has run many marathons suggested joining a running group that is also practicing for a marathon. She said that running with others makes the long training runs bearable.

She also said that she participates in 5ks, 10ks, and 15s during training. Finishing these runs boosts her confidence.

I am signed up for the Moab Half on Mar 21. I have started training and it is kicking my butt! What do you guys use as a motivator to run. My body can do it but getting my head to agree is another issue!

Nice! I plan to walk/jog the Ogden half on May 16th. Maybe I will have to try the SLC half to see how I am doing. I start my training tomorrow. I finished a 5k and a sprint triathlon last summer. I am thinking a 10k or half should be my next challenge. I am kind of nervous though, I am so NOT a runner, but I really want to try!

Good luck with your training everyone!!

Yeah, other Marathoners out there. I am doing the SLC Half for the second time. It is a great course. I am excited to see there are others on Sparkpeople doing it.
JBUTTARS, Congrats on walking a half, that is amazing. Walk or run, as long as you finish.
HALFBYAUG, congrats on your first full marathon.

Hi all! I walked the 5K last year and decided to sign up for the Half Marathon this year. It will be my 2nd half. I walked the Nike Women's Half in October. I am hoping to walk/jog Salt Lake.

Just wondering if anyone else out there is training for this and would like some virtual camaraderie? :)
