I always take some home made energy bars. They are a great tasting, filling and a great meal replacement if your stuck (with nothing but McDonalds's around)

Some stevia packets as well. They can come in handy...

DH (who is not paleo) agrees that saving money on take-out food is a good idea, so I will stop at a grocery store for beef jerky, fruit, carrot sticks.

Greek salad, hard boiled eggs, jerky, cheese (if you do dairy).

Anyone have any good ideas for a road trip? We want to pack food ahead of time to ensure we don't stop at fast food places. We're driving 24 hours cross-country in 2 weeks. I have dried fruit and nuts--any other ideas?

I've been eating Paleo since January and feel good. I crave a few things like cheese and Italian spaghetti sauce. So, I forget about the cheese and make a tomato sauce w/peppers, onions and mushrooms. Takes care of me.
P.S. lost 13.6 lbs.

Good choice! I must say we have not done fast food since November 2012 but we have gone out for dinner a couple of times when I know I do not plan on eating paleo. I love how I don't feel 'right' the next day. Tells me that I am doing something right my choosing to eat paleo 95 - 99% of the time.

our favorite restaurant is mexican as well, Rey Azteca. they have a wonderful mixed grill called Parillada Mexicana. I always order it without cheese, and without tortillas. but as you said it does come with rice and beans, which I don't eat, and Avocado salad which is basically some shredded lettuce with a dollop of guacamole, I always order a side of guac as well, and have them leave the cheese off of that as well and I'm golden.

it's not fast food, but very yummy and Hubby can get the soft foods that work best for his teeth,

I am glad you posted, I was wondering what you ended up doing emoticon

We have a Mexican Restaurant in town, and DH really likes to eat there. Thankfully they have another in the town where he works, so he can go there for lunch because I am always turning him down. But once every couple of months, I say okay, usually we are out on the bike, so we stop in there. I just try to do the best I can and try not to stress it. :)

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all your great suggestions. Just as I suspected we did end up eating out and I rambled off alot of the suggestions you all offered to my husband .... In the end we ended up at our favorite Mexican food restaurant so in place of chips and salsa I asked for hot carrots, and I got the carne asada plate which had steak, advocado slices, grilled green onions, and rice and beans (which I didn't eat).

Thank you all for the ideas you all have me some suggestions I really hadn't thought of and will keep in mind for next time.

For fast food, I like Chipotle (or Qdoba, but I prefer Chipotle)...I get a burrito bowl (so no tortilla) with whichever protein I want, tons of tomato pico-de-gallo, lettuce and guacamole. DELICIOUS!!

Laura,
I understand that you are suspicious of Mc Donald's. But in this case the labeling is clear. Grill seasoning is clearly listed as only pepper and salt. My daughter is allergic to soy and has never had a reaction to their hamburgers. By the way, there are a lot of reasons why white meat (even chicken breast) is a lot worse than dark meat (thigh or wing meat). It's too high in protein and too low in fat to be healthy. Having said that I wouldn't touch Mc Donald's chicken nuggets or the chicken breast as both have lots of yucky additives, much rather have the hamburger.

perhaps they have changed their "meat". It used to common knowledge that it was part of their recipe. 100$ pure beef, mixed with TVP. But, I am always leery of their wording. Like with their chicken. 100% WHITE meat. Doesn't mean it's BREAST meat. They actually bleach the pink sludge to make it white. So, it's no lie. The meat is white! lol
Just like the beef flavouring in their fries is a "beef product".

I looked up McDonalds website here. You can "ask a question" One of the questions already posted was whether or not the beef pattys contain tofu. The answer was NO. However, "aside from some salt and pepper, they do add soybean oil among other seasonings" McDonalds is crafty and I wonder what the "seasonings" are. Perhaps MSG. I wouldn't touch anything at McDonalds with a 100 foot pole. Not a thing.

And the sad part about this is that most schools still serve ground beef made with pink slime. I see the highschool crowd lined up at Mc Donald's for lunch. Unfortunately they are indeed making a much better choice then eating what the school serves. emoticon

Regarding McDonald's and their "meat"... McD's changed their meat in the beginning of 2012 to take out the "pink slime". I still don't eat McD's, but at least it's "meatier" than it once was. ;)

I rarely eat fast food anymore... but when I do, I order a grilled chicken breast sandwich minus the bun. Most fast food places don't even flinch when I do this anymore- it's quite common as people are diagnosed with Celiac, etc. They usually put the chicken and toppings in a plastic container and give me a fork and knife. True, it's still not healthy food... but it's better than falling back into the fries-and-burger thing. :)

Laura, I just looked up the nutrition info on their label. It says 100% beef, except for salt and pepper. I even checked the regular hamburger, same thing.
So I hope the labeling is correct. Where did you find this info?

I have heard Jimmy John's offers "unwiches" w/lettuce instead of bread. Panera recently advertised their "hidden menu". mypanera.panerabread.com/articlestip

I haven't tried them yet but, as a former Panera regular, I found it encouraging that they were offering more bread-free options.

McDonald's double quarter pounder minus cheese, ketchup or bun. I keep a bottle of fish oil capsules in the car to make up for the lack of omega 3's (since the meat is not pasture-fed) and try not to do this more than once a week. Because they are such a large buyer their beef is actually better quality (no pink slime) than what some smaller hamburger places have.
I suppose any burger with salad instead of fries would work. Breakfast sandwiches can also go without the bread, although the other ingredients may be more questionable. I think factory farmed eggs are possibly worse than factory-farmed meat.

JMO - I rarely go off plan, hardly ever - but sometimes you just can't avoid it, or dont want to, whatever. I chalk it up to my 20% and don't stress it (try not to) I just try not to do that very often. I also try to still make as good of choices as I can. I might have to make up for it over the next day or two so it all balances out calorie wise. Or I might have to do a HFLC if I have water gain. In other words, do a little bit of damage control. Other times, it just isnt worth it knowing I will have to do damage control, so you just have to do what is best for you.

If you are into or need a refeed etc, you could make it work in your favor.

This is your journey. Take the wheel and drive!

I stay away from drive through fast food. There are a couple of places that are "fast" like Denny's, White Spot, Red Robin etc. where you can ask for certain substitutions. Like salad instead of fries. Burgers wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun etc.

Look at salads with meat (not deep fried)...it is not truly Paleo, but it is closer than a burger and fries.

I have not had fast food since i started paleo and even a while before that. However, my husband and I have an extremly busy night tonight once I get off work so I have a feeling that he is going to be suggesting we either eat out or grab fast food (probably grab fast food =/ ) Do any of you have an easy fast food place you have found something "paleo" at i know that sounds ridiculous asking but I know after the week i've had im liable to just be "bad" instead of going through a drive through with him, going home , taking stuff out and cooking for just me.

any and all suggestions are welcome.
