Hi Houndlover - thanks for your responses to my query -- your diet plan is really interesting.

The Diabetic Nutrition Plan was chosen for me when I flagged that I am diabetic on the questions coming into the system... I'm not sure if you can opt into the plan any other way...

It seems to be much lower fat and calories than I want on Paleo and it is NOT tracking sugar which I would really like to track.

cheers and thanks

Gen

Allison,
after I look at the spark diabetes recommendations yesterday I started a little survey on the diabetes team to see what works for people. I have a feeling we both know. emoticon

I guess having a soy free plan is a step in the right direction...

Frankly, I don't want to let the site suggest foods / meals for me. Diet plans put me to sleep (even before I went Paleo), and I've disabled that option.

Yep, there I am, swimming through the desert sands. Might just be a mirage, after all. But this is life, and we learn best about it if we explore it, and take our chances. A life unexplored, after all, is one of the saddest things out there.

Birgit,
I don't personally use gluten replacement foods so I'm always forgetting they exist. When I said they should offer a gluten free option I meant a checkbox that says 'no wheat' just like you can select 'no pork' in the current system.

For the diabetes plan you have to visit a sub section of the site. I tried it once hoping for low carb but was disappointed. Same old whole grain nonsense. Maybe it has changed since I last played with it. /shrug

Allison,
thanks, I just took a look at it and changed my settings to type 2 diabetes. Nothing much changed, the program be able to request wheat-free, grain-free, legume-free and dairy-free diets but none of these are options. On the other hand vegetarian, pork-free, red-meat-free, soy-free are. The most common allergies/food sensitivities are not there? This makes no sense at all. I guess we'll have to be thankful for the support that the spark teams, message boards and individuals offer and ignore the stuff we can't use.

Allison,
I just looked and could not find a plan for eating with diabetes although I have heard people talk about it (and said it is not low-carb). Where did you find it?
Concerning gluten-free, it may or may not be helpful. While gluten-free foods are clearly the safer choice for people with gluten-intolerance/celiac most gluten-free processed foods are filled with starches like tapioca, potato, corn etc. that are extremely high in carbs and a very poor choice for people with diabetes or insulin resistance and also for anyone who is significantly overweight.

Unfortunately not. If they would just add the option of "gluten free" in their plans it would not only be a huge step for those with celiac, but also for folks on Paleo/Primal. Not perfect, but better! Last check though they have said they will not do that because they want folks with special dietary needs to work with their doctors/nutritionists. Apparently unless you are diabetic, in which case Spark will alter the plan for you...?? I don't get it!

Gen,
as far as I could tell when I just checked Spark can not be set up to work with low-carb type diets.
Just as an example, this is what Spark recommends for me:
Consume between 1600 & 1950 calories per day
Consume between 41 & 72 grams of fat per day.
Consume between 208 & 301 grams of carbohydrates per day.
Consume between 60 & 162 grams of protein per day.
Consume between 25 & 35 g of Fiber, total dietary
Consume at least 8 cups of water per day.

this is what I do on a paleo-type low-carb diet:
consume between 2000-2500 calories per day
consume as much fat as I'm hungry for, at least 200 gram/day
consume between 20-50 grams of carbohydrates per day
consume between 60 -100 grams of protein per day
consume between 5-80 grams of fiber
consume at least 12 cups of water per day
plus I eat at least 3-4 grams of salt, much more than Spark recommends

I decided to make my own plan.
Birgit

hi all,

the questions I answered when I joined sparkpeople chose a nutrition plan for me... is there a nutrition plan that best fits a Paleo diet?

Thanks

Gen
