In case anyone's interested I'm doing IF now in an attempt to lose the last 12 pounds or so. Started last Friday 7/13 (lucky day!). While fasted I take a .7 - 1.3 mile walk at work (depending on how much time I have). I break my fast at 11AM and finish eating no later than 6PM. I always have an EAS shake to start with and take my time finishing it. Have yet to be really starving when 11AM rolls around, but I could certainly eat. =) I might try a window of noon-6PM next week.

So far I *think* I've lost a pound or so but it's hard to say b/c I was taking medicines last week that tend to um...block me up. I'm also getting back into the home weight training program which can also throw my weight off temporarily. My clothing certainly isn't getting any *tighter* though, which I take as a good sign!

I'd also caution against IF for anyone recovering from ANY form of eating disorder, but especially bulimia. I learned the hard way, then discovered that IF can trigger the lower brain's survival instinct and exacerbate binge urges.

Any form of binge eating disorder or compulsive overeating can make IF much harder. Through recovery I learned that purging also includes excessive exercise or not eating to compensate for a binge. I told myself I was fasting, then suddenly I'm back in the throes of an eating disorder :(

If you've never had an eating disorder, I think IF is a great metabolic tool. Good luck!

I IF most daily.

I just fell into it naturally, then researched and discovered it was called IF. MDA has a nice 7 part series on the benefits.

I mostly do a Fast 5 - fast for 19 hours with a 5 hour window.

But I have been experimenting with a mix of protocols from leangains, bulletproof exec, eat stop eat, and also The perfect diet suggests fermented veggies are okay during a fast. Last week I did some 24s, some 36, some 19's most days, and was able to get the 4lb off that I had gained plus about 2 more - the 2 was probably fat. I know the 4 was not fat, just not so great previous weekend choices.

I plan on doing much of the same this week also.

This is your journey. Take the wheel and drive!

Great response Ramona!!! Lots of great ideas. I do an IF and it seems to be the only thing that has worked for me to lose weight. I eat between 10 and 5 everyday and it usually ends up as 2 meals and between 1200 and 1500 calories a day. Lots of fat, lots of protein and very few carbs (under 50). But I have a severe thyroid condition and (except for eggs) follow the autoimmune protocol

Hey, Dee! Sorry to hear that things still are not falling into place for you!

Some questions first:

1. I'm not sure how IF actually relates to your actual question, what specifically are wondering about with respect to IF, if anything?
2. Are you eating 3 Paleo meals a day?
3. Are you still IFing and wondering if you should stop?
4. Is it possible that you are actually at a place of stasis (honestly, the difference between 168 and 154 isn't that great and perhaps your focus should be gaining muscle and letting the weight take care of itself)?
5. Have you measured your body fat with calipers?
6. Are your sleep, performance markers, and stress levels all well taken care of?
7. Do you have access to a local Paleo/Crossfit community for some 'expert' consultation?
8. Do you want to hear about other's experience with IF?
9. Are you still involved any medical protocols?

Some observations:
• if what worked before won't work now, something in your body has changed
• if the first time you did this there was a great change in how clean your diet became, the results would be more dramatic and seem to happen effortlessly
• if you haven't had to change much to get back to Paleo this time, you have to refine more
• you don't say how old you are... it's possible you've crossed some sort of hormonal threashold that's changed your playing field

I read this today at MDA:

"READ THE BOOK FIRST before you listen to forum advice. In The Primal Blueprint there is an entire chapter on portion control and calorie targeting. Much of the forum “wisdom” however said to chuck your scale out the window and just eat your bacon and be happy and the pounds would fall off magically.
Guess what. Didn’t happen. I gained back those first five plus five more and then read the book and realized I needed to cut portion sizes and get my calories under control. I think Taubes got part of the story right. There are good calories and bad calories, but even with just good ones, too much is still too much.
I dialed back on all that yummy fat and increased my lean protein intake while cutting overall quantities of food. The scale started moving again and kept going down for another 35 pounds to 145, five pounds under my goal of 150 and a size 6 when my goal had been an 8.
Every time the subject of calories comes up on the forum, people seem to square off into two extreme camps. One side is the “It doesn’t matter what you eat, only how much you eat” strict CICO approach. In the other corner there are is “CICO is bogus, you can eat as much as you want as long as you eat the right things.”
And then there is me saying wait a minute. Why does it have to be either the quantity OR the quality of the calories. I think it’s BOTH. Eating the right kind of foods (Primal) makes it easier to restrict the quantity of food without feeling like you are going to faint from hunger.
The people who say that you can just “eat when you are hungry, stop when you are not” don’t get what it’s like to have a completely messed up metabolism. When you can’t just “listen to your body” because it’s telling you lies about how much to eat, you need to impose some control on the situation from the brain down."

So, everything I know at this point suggests that if you are doing everything 'right' you should be losing the weight (or you're already at a good body weight). SO...
...if you're not following the PB chapter on on portion control and calorie targeting
...if you're not consciously monitoring your portion sizes
...if you're not focussed on good calories
...if you're not tinkering with your macronutrients
(lower/raise fat, more lean(er) protein, carbs at the low(er) end)
...if you're not certain you don't have an adrenal issue (or some other meatabolic issue) to address
...if you're not sure if you're not over-exercising at this point
(again, what worked last time won't necessarily work this time)
...if you're not certain your sleep, performance markers, and stress levels are all well taken care of
...if you're 'cheating' at all (80/20 won't work for everyone initially, or ever... even if it worked before)
...if you've not tried supplementing according to PB and MDA
(vitamin and mineral deficiencies can wreak havoc with weight loss)
...if you've not eliminated all sugar

Then I'd say you really need to consider all of the above. The thing is, everything about Paleo/Primal is 'recommended' yet everyone has to find their own sweet spot... so even if something is typically 'allowed' it doesn't necessarily work for everyone. Have you considered trying the autoimmune protocol - autoimmune issues and inflammation can creep up anytime (Robb Wolf)? The athlete's protocol (Robb Wolf)?

Have you considered emailing Mark Scisson @ MDA with your questions? He seems really great at responding... there hasn't been a question I've had in the last two months that hasn't been answered in his recent daily posts.

Finally, this really is a journey each person has to figure out for themselves. I'm certain your body is giving you cues, you just need to learn to understand them. The best way I know how to do this is to research. Have you gone through all of the resources in my photo gallery (I keep adding).

My guess would be that stress can be a major issue as can sleep deprivation. Those things are the only things that have stalled weight loss for me anyhow. Stress can be physical (overtraining, illness) or mental/emotional in which case meditation/prayer can be helpful.
It may also be a good idea to rule out thyroid issues as these are extremely common and very often undiagnosed.

I had a simliar experience! I thought it was because of portion sizes. When i did the whole 30 this time I thought for sure I did everything the same, but I didn't start loosing until I made sure I got in 3 serving of veggies. I don't think I did that the first time. Now I'm not so sure. I'd love to hear if IF works for you. I've never tried it. I think I'll have to stick with Paleo, but I need to focus on my veggies. :) It's hard when I'm the only one around doing it.

Jazzid, I am not an expert so this is all my opinion. I did a Whole 30 to kick off my Paleo in April and was so disappointed that I didn't lose but like 2 pounds. It was really disappointing because a girl at my gym did it with me and lost like 15(ugh). Anyway, I learned a few things: portion control still counts and eating Paleo isn't an excuse for me to eat as much as I want even though I don't count calories. So, I had to learn to listen to my body.

Also, it just took time for my body to adjust. Here I am barely over 3 months in and I have lost over 10 pounds (I only weighed 142 to start). I also do Crossfit so I do work out.

Be patient with your body but keep searching and tweaking and learn what works for you!

Sweat is just your fat crying!

Hey guys,

I listened to a Robb Wolf's podcast this morning and he answered a question regarding IF. He basically says:

If general weight loss is your goal, start with 3 paleo meals per day and keep IF as a potential game changer down the line. IF is something that can definitely be beneficial but sleep, performance markers, and stress levels all need to be well taken care of or IF can have some negative results on body composition, performance, and mood.

He also mentioned leptin and how Jack Kruse has a great write up explaining the reasoning why IF should not be attempted if you are leptin resistant, and that can be found at www.jackkruse.com.

To sum it up Jack Kruse briefly explains how our body utilizes fats and glucose as energy, and leptin’s role in this whole process. If our leptin signaling is not functioning properly then our metabolic pathways cannot handle the stress of IF and it can result in undesirable effects. He also supports the notion that if we are doing everything right, IF can yield an increase in muscle mass and decrease body fat (Kruse, 2011).

ABOUT ME: ... last year I got great results following the paleo/primal lifestyle and lost from 168 - 154. Unfortunately, and stupidly emoticon gained it all back over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. I started following the diet again last month and while I have lost some inches, I don't seem to be having the same success, following the diet in exactly the same way I did last year. I don't understand what is going on.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get over what I guess is like a plateau, but I am not sure. I am getting depressed about this because nothing I have tried seems to be working.

Any ideas on how I can "tweak" here and there in order to get results????

... any all all response's will be greatly appreciated. thanks, ~ Dee
