Thanks everyone. Looks like I'm about to miss cheese, at least for a while.

I have a perfect body. I just pad it for protection.

I use butter and that's about it for dairy. When I was 18 I developed a complete dislike for cow's milk, no clue why, and lactose intolerance runs in my family so that could be part of it. Butter seems to be fine for me and in fact seems to be good so I will keep with it.

I use full fat, local dairy only and usually minimally. I prefer fermented forms, so I have more yogurt (homemade) than anything else. I'm also eating a lot of local cheese this summer, and most of it is raw milk, and actually a lot is goat and sheep cheese. I use butter, but sparingly and again, local and sometimes cultured.

CONRAD be aware lactose is only part of the issue. Cow's milk proteins (casein and whey) are highly allergenic as well. Be aware of how you react to any dairy and be cautious.

After many months without dairy, I am adding a small serving of cheese (1 ounce, 28 grams) into my diet. I seem to be tolerating it well. I have chosen medium Cheddar. From what I have heard, people have problems with dairy because of the lactose. The aged cheeses, which are hard cheeses, have very little lactose, so they can be tolerated.

Lactose intolerance is very common. However, scandinavian people are much more likely to tolerate lactose because they have been consuming dairy for centuries, apparently long enough for genetic adaptation to occur. I am 50% Swedish. My mother's parents were both from Sweden. I am looking forward to trying other hard cheeses like Mozzarella and provolone.

I also dropped dairy after a while. For me it was the sugar. I couldn't believe how much sugar there was actually hidden dairy.

I agree with what EGALITAIRE said about self-experimenting. If you take something out of your diet for a month and pay attention to your body as you reintroduce it slowly, you'll see what works for you.

As an aside, over 10 years ago I read "Eat Right 4 Your Type" and the type O diet (I'm O neg) is in alignment with paleo. Type O's should avoid dairy, except limited butter and unfermented cheeses. I also learned that I should avoid coconut, so my version of paleo is a little more specialized for me but it definitely works. In my opinion, understanding how blood type factors into inflammation response explains why some people can eat certain things but other people can't.

Good luck!

If you follow the link Shaggybaby put up, near the end, Sisson discusses goat milk - it is generally closer to human breast milk in its composition, so probably less likely to have negative impacts.

The blog is a comprehensive look at dairy.

Thanks Shaggybaby

Thanks for the information. I think I will try to eliminate for 30 days. That's interesting, it seems like something that most of us are "brought up on" would be good for us. I know that when I was young I was given goats milk not cows milk. Not really sure why.

I have a perfect body. I just pad it for protection.

As Paleo is a framework, there are various opinions about what is Paleo. For me, I am less interested in labels and more interested in what works and is healthy for me. Mark Sisson at www.marksdailyapple.com position is that as long as you can tolerate it, grass-fed is OK. And raw is generally better.

But it is all about experimenting for yourself - in my opinion. We are an science experiment of n=1.

If you want to test for you, eliminate dairy for 30 days, then re-introduce and see what happens. If you don't experience any negative effects, then maybe it is OK for you.

I have been following a primal-style diet for 6 months with very favourable results and don't have a problem with dairy.

Does this help? http://www.marksdailyapple.com/dairy-intolerance/#axzz1z1KHnOBw

I've found that my body doesn't do as well when I'm eating dairy. My weight loss stalls and I'll start getting cravings for sweet stuff, or worse, more cheese! It's something I love, love, love, but it only makes sense that if I'm going to overeat it and gain weight, I should probably avoid it :(

I was wondering why dairy isn't considered true paleo? If it comes from grass fed cows it should be ok right?

How many of you eat/drink dairy?
