Now for the other side of the question...

I have eaten low carb for seven or eight years, so Paleo wasn't a big change for me. Mostly a matter of cutting out the dairy and the sweeteners, both of which I used a lot of. Also reading labels very closely to cut out the tiny bits of grains and soy and such, not that I eat much processed foods anyway.

I did a Whole33 (it just happened to be 33 days before I left on vacation), and saw little change. No fatigue or nausea or cravings or other bad side effects. No extra energy or clearer thinking or other good side effects. Nothing. I lost a couple of pounds, but that could have been the low carb or it could have been the Paleo. During the 4 days I was on vacation, I continued to eat as Paleo as I could, recognizing that there would be trace amounts of stuff in the food I ate in restaurants. My steak was likely cooked in canola oil, there was probably sugar in the bacon, and so forth. But I avoided dairy and sweeteners and anything where I had reasonable control. No change. No bad side effects from the trace junk I probably ate. (And that's TWO trips to the Jelly Belly plant, where they hand out free samples, including the sugar free varieties!)

I back to doing a Whole30 again for at least a couple of weeks, then I'll try adding back dairy and sweeteners and see if I notice any effects. If not, I'll probably stick with mostly Paleo but not be quite as strict about it. It has been very easy to do. The hardest part is not having cream and sweetener in my morning and evening tea, and I'm dealing with that by having bone broth instead.

Hey folks! Well I've been mostly Paleo since July and I went from about 215 to 187lbs. The first 3 weeks were kinda crummy because I felt like I was in a fog and just couldn't think straight or do things right...but it went away! Thank goodness because I couldn't function like that for a lot longer! I'm pretty much in love with the lifestyle and plan to follow it almost exclusively...minus my favorite times of the year. Now that I have my eating under control I'm focusing on working out and gaining some muscle. Thats one thing I noticed, I've lost weight, but my body fat hasn't dropped as much as I would have expected, maybe 3 or 4% So I need to do something different.

Hi everyone! I've hit the 10lbs weightloss mark on Paleo and I'm so thrilled. I know most of it is water loss because it has just been two weeks but people tell me I've gotten smaller and I could fit in to some of my smaller clothes now. Even if it has just been two weeks, I noticed my skin is clearer and more radiant, my hair is healthier, my nails are stronger -- I must have been wanting protein! -- and I have so much more energy. I had trouble sleeping the first week but that's been resolved naturally. I sleep well now so I think it means that my body has adjusted to Paleo. I have not had cravings so far but I'm banking on the positive changes in me to keep me from backsliding.

By the way, I found out Paleo through this SparkTeam and thought to do it because of this too. So thank you everybody!

My energy is through the roof, I have more muscle mass, (not a big deal until you go to pick up something heavy) and I think I have better moods? The thing I love is seeing muscles peaking out of my back, legs, etc. And having an almost flat stomach, and curves. And my allergies are down from taking allergy medication every day to taking it every now and then.

I lost 20-25 pounds this year (two+ clothing sizes) and in a normal year of working out and "eating clean/healthy" I lose maybe 10, in a year. My rings are getting too big.

I occasionally have cravings, but I can resist them, my roommate right now has my favorite ice cream in the fridge, and I know its there, and I am not tempted.

The bad thing? I have almost no clothing that fits. ;) and none of my winter coats will fit. My bathing suit falls off if I jump up out of the water.

I had withdrawals bad, it took me almost three weeks to not "feel like crap" after going all the way whole 30. It was worth it, now I may have an occasional something, but I don't have cravings. Now when I crave something, I look at what I"ve eaten that day and realize, I'm hungry cause I haven't eaten enough. And, I sometimes forget to eat a meal, ;) that never happened before in my life.

Goals:
If you want real results-they aren't coming for free.

Bless someone each day with my presence. Make them glad they are here.

Teach people how to love.

Hi!

I have been eating Paleo since October 2010. I didn't have any weight issues, but from the first 10 days my body became more fit and toned. Also I got a very clear skin, strong nails and beautiful hair.

Most important...I got pregnant!!!! I had been trying without any success for 5 years and after 3 months on Paleo I got pregnant without any medicine or therapy. I still ate Paleo during my pregnancy, although I added 2 cups of goat's milk and I was fine. No diabetes, no anemia and no excessive weight gain. I only gained 15pounds of which 7 was the baby!

Moreover paleo made my IBS disappear and the only PMS symptom I get is a slight bloating.

I lost around fifty pounds before doubting it was the diet, trying something else, and gaining about ten back. So I have had success as long as I've stuck with it.

Good luck Tamica! Another lady just started a challenge thread (I am new to this so I hope that's what it's called) named Whole30. I started a Whole30 challenge 12 days ago and have lost 4.5 pounds. I weighed 140 at the start and am 5'4". More importantly I feel fabulous. No energy spikes from sugar. I wake up energized and don't get tired til about 8 at night and then I just go to bed about 9:30 or so, sleep great all night and wake up feeling energized!
I guess giving up bread would help but, for me, I learned that I have to go all in to curb the cravings. I really haven't had any places where I was dying to cheat. If you get hungry just eat something "on plan."

40andthin,

Quality of life and body comp are just as important as the scale - love your comment about not buying new clothes now for your cruise next year, cause they might be too big - awesome thinking.

I started Paleo with a Whole 30 on March 5th - 2.5 months later, I'm in love with my new lifestyle. I eat limited fruit, only 3 meals per day, no snacks and no eating after 8:00. I try to eat a high protein breakfast - at least 30 grams of protein per day. Limit nuts too as they can pack on the weight, but if you're hungry they are a satisfying snack.

I've lost 27 lbs since I started. I am thrilled to have made this lifestyle change. I lost weight on Spark about 4-5 years ago - 50 lbs - and I've gained it all back. I could never get back on track after that. I tried WW, SP, anything really but now I know what works, and I know this is permanent. I'm going on a cruise next February, and by then I know that i will have lost 100 lbs if not more. I'm almost tempted to go buy size 8 clothing for the cruise but I figure that wouldn't be very smart- besides, I could actually be smaller than I expect to be! :)

I have been eating paleo for 6 weeks now and am doing really well on it! I've lost 23lbs and have seen a great increase in my energy. There have been a few days I have cheated and paid the price...the next day I am bloated and lethargic...but for me this is just a lesson that my body prefers the paleo eating...

I've lost 23.5 lbs. since early Feb. I eat 10% carbs, 65 - 70% fat, and 20 - 25% protein daily.

Fat burns fat. I read in Gary Taubes book "Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It" that your body will always burn glucose (sugar comes from carbs) first then fat second. If you don't have much glucose in your system it will burn the fat. Makes sense to me. Especially in that I'm pre-diabetic, I have more blood sugar than the average person. No wonder I struggled to lose weight on the Am. Diabetes Assoc. diet. I was eating too many carbs with that diet and was constantly keeping my blood sugar higher and was constantly burning glucose for fuel. Now I'm burning fat, my fat.

Your cravings will stop for carbs after 2 - 3 weeks.

Low carb does act as an appetite suppressant. I find I'm satisfied on 1200 - 1400 calories a day. Your mileage may vary.

Your cholesterol numbers will improve dramatically. I had bloodwork done after 7 weeks on Atkins. My doctors words, PHENOMENAL!

No more carb comas for me after eating too many carbs. More energy.

If you suffer from acid indigestion, you'll see it clears up. Seriously, you eat fat and indigestion gets better? Who knew? Low carbers do.

No bloated feeling after eating and no waking up puffy, holding fluids in the morning.

When you eat this way, you don't want to eat the things you shouldn't because you feel so much better.

Weight loss or scale victories are really almost a peripheral benefit of the nutritional plan I am following, which is a modified Primal/Paleo plan.

I went all in on the diet, basically 100% with a few slip ups along the way, but nothing planned (some people have a cheat day - I see this as a lifestyle - prescribing a cheat day doesn't make sense for me - but if it works for them, it is all good).

I didn't lose any significant weight for about 3 weeks, then lost about 1.5 pounds week for a 30 pound loss, plateaued for a couple of weeks and have lost another 10 pounds in the last month.

The NSV are the most significant for me - inflammation I had in many areas of my body - GI, chronic shoulder pain, plantar fascitis, have all completely disappeared.

I have more physical energy, more mental acuity, sleep better (less snoring I am told), periodic rash on my face has not appeared in months.

And even in the first few weeks when the scale didn't move, I lost inches - total of 5 inches on my belt so far, two shirts sizes from 3XL to XL and almost an L- body composition is probably the most visibly noticeable change

And it is different for everyone - that's just me.

All the best in your journey to better health.
