The current summit is: the Real Food Summit, and it started today. There so far appears to be a LOT of overlap with Paleo.

realfoodsummit.com/

You can go to these events, CMOTSINGER, and for free, but only within the week each of these are offered. Otherwise yes, you do have to pay large buck to obtain. I am not going to do that, either. I saw most of the paleo summit presentations for free -- most were good, with a couple of duds.

The way it works, is that three presentations are posted per day during the summit, which lasts about a week. These are free that day, based on Pacific Time.

I've already watched a couple today: One on seafood (Chris Kessler) and one on sweeteners (David Getoff) both awesome. I still have to watch the Joel Salatin one (but I've toured his farm and already have a couple of his books, and seen him in Food, Inc, so it wasn't a priority).

If you have the time during this week, catch whatever you can. Otherwise, go to participants' websites and catch up that way.

Got rid of the ticker cuz my scale decided to flatter me unduly. I haven't re-gained, just got a better, honest, scale.

Just because you steam it, doesn't mean you can't add herbs and spices. (A gripe at those insipid restaurant "healthy choice" menu selections.)

So it isn't an event you can go to, but a digital download of an event you can purchase for $99?

I also really enjoyed Dean Dwyer and have recently subscribed to his blog.....I love the Hartwigs but wasn't interested in the Vegetarian presentations so I skipped that one.

I see that Underground Wellness is planning another Summit soon, though it wouldn't be all Paleo presenters this time.....

Some really positive impressions from the following presenters:

Erwan Le Corre – Founder, MovNat
MovNat: Moving Naturally

Paul Jaminet, Ph.D. – Author, Perfect Health Diet
The Evolutionary Evidence for the Optimal Human Diet

Mat Lalonde, Ph.D. – Research Biochemist, Harvard University
Invalid Inferences: An Organic Chemist’s Perspective on Paleo

Denise Minger – Author, Death by Food Pyramid
How to Win an Argument with a Vegetarian (unfortunately-named)

Chris Kresser – Integrative Medicine Practitioner
An Update on Cholesterol

Dallas & Melissa Hartwig – Health Educators, Whole9 Life
Paleo for Vegetarians

Dr. Catherine Shanahan MD – Author, Deep Nutrition
The Paleo Diet vs. Top-Selling Drugs — Who Wins?

Dean Dwyer – Blogger, Beyond Primal
The Inner Game of Paleo

I didn't view all of the other talks, and there were one or two who failed to take impact, but overall this was a truly worthwhile event.

Personal Impressions: (Part I)

I didn't get to watch all of these, but of those I did:

As a professional scientist (albeit in a somewhat different field), I found
Dr. Jack Kruse MD – Neurosurgeon - Leptin Circadian Cycles to be the most irritating of the bunch. My visit to his website did nothing to allay my fears. Lambasting around phrases such as "quantum mechanics" did nothing whatsoever in his favor. His material, although it was one of those I was most looking forward to viewing, was the LEAST informative (in a useful way) of those I saw during the Summit.

To be honest, the nail in my view of his coffin was his website. I'm a scientist. He's a gadfly, although he may still have the Ph.D. My opinion of his work is from data I have seen so far available online.

Rhonda I hear you! Carb balance is very delicate for me as well. I crave the carbs the more i eat them. I can't do strict low carb and run, but I have to find that proper level that works but doesn't cause cravings.

I loved the Jimmy Moore interview - I needed the reminder that carbs are not MY friend.....my weight loss has really slowed since switching from Atkins to Paleo, and I'm sure that's a result of taking too much advantage of "safe starches" and fruit! Maybe after I drop the last 50 pounds I'll be able to eat a banana - but not now!!!

My husband and I just listened to Dr. Cate talk a about drugs versus diet. Fascinating interview.... so encouraging to hear a mainstream MD talk about the long term ill effects of drugs and that Drs should be recommending diet first. My husband has been insulin dependent diabetic for the past 10 years... and all the other drugs that come with that (cholesterol for example), and we are so excited about the prospect of reducing drug dependency!

I have been listening to most of the presentations on the Summit, and they are (by and large) excellent. We get a few who try to get by without substantiating, but that's rare. I also like the fact that the emphasis is not that the Paleo/Paleo diet needs to be some monolithic cultic structure. You do it towards your own body needs.

I'm doing a Whole 30 this month, Xena - trying to slay that sugar dragon here too!!

Some of these presentations are way more technical than I am, but I'm getting lots of ideas for more research/reading.....can't wait to listen to the 'digestive health' presentation tonight, that's one area I've struggled with - though magnesium is helping!

I'm watching the summit this week as well. Not catching all the talks, but enjoying and taking notes on some anyway. I'm doing a lot of thinking about the sugar insulin thing. It was a lot easier for me to give up starch than sugar. I wonder if getting the sugar monkey off my back will speed the weight loss. It's not like I eat sweets all the time but I do eat probably more than I ought to...

I stalk Dr. O'Bryan ever since I went to one of his seminars. I'm sick I missed his talk yesterday because you never know if he'll say something new I haven't heard before. LOL. I listened to Nora today and want to go see her now! WoW. Loved it. Listened to only half of Paul Jaminet yesterday - too much going on to finish. Bummer. I'm trying to listen to Matt Lalonde in the garden today, day 4 - so smart.

Loving the Summit. So much good information. Probably the biggest takeaway for me from all the presenters so far, is not to be too doctrinaire about what I believe. It is interesting to hear the different viewpoints. I thought Nora Gedgaudas was fantastic. I know one thing for sure: I love eating paleo/low carb whatever you want to call it and I love being part of a community of like minded folks.

Off to listen to Paul Jaminet....not sure if I'll get around to Matt Stone - I've already drunk the koolaid!

I'm really enjoying all the great info. I love Jack Kruse; it's amazing the way he keeps up with his membership on his website. I have no idea where he finds the time! I'm glad he does, though... it's a real boon and motivation for the lifestyle!

I didn't watch all of the vids yesterday. I'm mostly in this on my own, and there's no kids in our house, so that part wasn't especially relevant for me. But the rest is great info. I agree that the more we hear it, the better we retain it. I need to keep hearing it too!

Looking forward to the next upload! I'd like to send them all Spark Awards!

What did everyone think of day 1?

I was refreshed on some things I may be doing wrong...namely too much fruit and wine. I knew this, but hearing it over and over will eventually make it stick!

I also was happy to hear both of these speakers having a "Do the best you can" attitude.
