Well thanks again for responses..... I have decided to go to reg. primal more so than paleo. I am allowing myself to have some fruit, and egg. So limited in both but funny feel more able knowing that I can. So today when dad asked us to go for breakfast at smittys ( same as dennys) I had egg, baacon, and fruit cup ( very small) so good and filling. Granted their heaping plates with toast and hashbrowns oooooooh smelled so good. but said nope not gluten free not eating it. and I was fine. So far other than todays breakfast I have had 1 egg and 1/2 c fruit total in 2 days so not bad.
also when I got home from trailer I weighed and have gone down 5 lbs. so will add salt when able and see what goes on. My knee isn't so bad and my eye has stopped twitching. I also remember my dr saying drink a small glass of tonic water if needed. so yea. thanks

I take a potassium supplement daily - plus my dr. suggested that I drink a glass of Diet Tonic Water daily (about 8 oz) because of the Quinine in it, it helps some people. It must help me, because I don't get leg cramps unless I don't drink enough water in a day, cramps anymore.
That's never a problem when I'm home all the time, but sometimes if I'm on the road or something and forget water....... I try not to let that happen anymore.

Keep reading and experimenting on what works for YOU. There seems to be a LOT of leeway between Wolf's, Sisson's, Cordain's and other paleo diets. I've been following The Primal Diet for Athletes for about 1 1/2 years and I added imput from the Primal Diet and Protein Power and I'm good to go. I had major problems with cramps/charlie horses too. I read in Protein Power that it was a lack of potassium and that a low carb diet frequently causes sleep problems (but i digress). So the cramps and ataxia (in my case) were a big headsup that electrolytes are needed- it's easy to get the potassium/magnesium.calcium ratios out of wack. it sounds like you are getting a handle on this with Lite salt, fruits etc. I have been following the Paleo Diet for Athletes and it is very helpful. I was dumbfounded to find that the best source for potassium is not the banana that I have just about every day, but it is a baked potato with the skin that I eat after a Crossfit workout or when we have hayed all day on the farm. The Diet for Athletes seems to take a sane approach and the best from all worlds both Paleo but with a higher carb diet window after workouts to enable fast recovery. I've also discovered that life can be a workout LOL Good luck with your Paleo adventures- let us know how you are doing!

I felt bored with my food after a month (I include small amounts of fermented dairy, so I still have a little variety) so this weekend I went to the bookstore and got The Paleo Diet (revised) by Loren Cordain and the Everything Paleo book. I definitely have a refreshed outlook on what to eat. I even took some time this weekend to make some date, walnut, and coconut bars (recipe posted in the Recipe Topic) and some "crackers" out of sunflower seeds and sesame seeds. Maybe googling some new recipes or getting a cook book will help give some new ideas on what to eat to keep you from getting bored.

Thanks sparkers!!! I am still getting limited replies on the paleo sites so thanks even more. I tell you I had a rotten day yesterday with the residual pain from that charley horse was so bad wasn't able to walk around campground with dog.
I get them bad anyway but this is nuts, I agree I do think it is an electrolyte issue. I took my vit d in eve instead of am, and going to continue to see if this works some. Today it is still tender but not so bad that I am not able to walk.
I feel as if I try to eat wholesome, healthy non processed food, bringing back some nuts, fruit but not as often or as much, and gf bread so I can have 1 toast some mornings. Then will bring in eggs, if I dont have nightshades including potatoes I am fine with that.
So at the trailer I only brought stuff hubby could eat or my veggies and meat. Getting really sick of this even though I know it can take more than 8 days to see a diff. I also know all about toxins ect. but can't have it that I can't function at all.
Will be glad to go to store tomorrow and get something to add to this. Will also try goats cheese or yogurt. my grandson only drinks goats as my son doees paleo as well as he can and wants the baby to not end up with crohns etc. as he does
oaky thanks again and off I go to fry uup some ham. yesterday had 3 slices of ham and that was it till supper, was nauseaous if tried to eat any salad or veggies steamed or roasted. I want either an egg and ham, or a pc of gf toast.
any ideas what rice does for arthritis ect. is it considered one of the grains...

I agree with Cindy... And for the record I have considered myself to be eating "Paleo" and will eat goat cheese, have small quantities of milk or cream on occasion, eat nuts on a regular basis, usually have one piece of fruit a day, and have never restricted salt (though we don't add it to much since my hubby has HBP.)

For me, also, the big no-no's are grains, wheat, and SUGAR.

Try adding a few things back in that are allowable and see how you do. Don't give up. I know what it's like to have others, and particularly family members, just waiting in the wings for you to fail. Listen to you body, find a balance that works and have faith that you are doing the right thing.

Also, I know that it is not uncommon for people to feel unwell for a few days-weeks when they first start eating this way. I know I went through a bit of that (lasted about a week for me) rather than give family members any fuel to use against me, I just told them I had a flu bug and I went through it on my own.

I'm glad that you reached out to us here and I hope this helps!!!

I agree that it is probably a potassium/magnesium/sodium issue with the cramps. I take Calm magnesium, add some NuSalt (potassium) and some sea salt and drink it. Or you can try coconut water, tomato juice, or there are some organic sports drinks.

Try giving yourself a break and just eliminate one thing at a time. The most important I think is grains, then dairy is next for potential issues. If you have a hard time thinking of things to eat check out the recipe forums and search Paleo and Primal or low carb on Spark recipes.

I did strict elemination at first, have been gf for years.
I started by adding salt back into my diet, then nuts...

I found I can tolerate goat cheese, but not cow products (ironic since I grew up in dairy farms)
Rice and corn - as well as any 'grain like' product is a BIG no-no for me.
I can eat snap peas or fresh green beans, but not dry or canned or any type of peanut or soy product.

I kept a food journal, and was helped with blood tests etc... from my family Doctor, and Naturopathic Nutritionist.

There is so much variation between all the different paleo/primal plans--especially when it comes to fruit, nuts, salt, and dairy. I think you just have to experiment to find what works best for you. Take what works, leave what doesn't. Don't feel like it has to be an all or nothing proposition.

I have been doing this about a month. I have had about 3 "blips" where I had a little rice and some whole wheat bread, but other than that pretty on point. As a free resource, I have found Mark Sisson's blog, Mark's Daily Apple, to be a great resource:

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/

For his primal eating, he does not say you need to cut out cheese if it does not cause you inflammation, so I still eat hard cheese like Parmesan. Also a portion of the Paleo community still eats cottage cheese and yogurt. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/dairy-intol
erance/

Muscle cramps may be a sign that you haven't been eating enough electrolytes. I have identified I have not been getting enough electrolytes thanks to the folks in this community. I had calf and thigh cramps and bloating. Now I am making an effort to eat more electrolyte-rich foods. Perhaps try that (red bell peppers, nectarines, half a frozen banana in smoothies are good).

Again, Mark's website does a breakdown of the calories you should eat based on your lean body mass (you can google a calculator for that). Since figuring out my numbers and re-setting my calorie counter, I have eat about 1400 cals max a day and feel good.

I think there are too many restrictions with the Wolfe guys stuff. I haven't read his material, but from what I have seen on current blog, people seem to be restricting, measuring,, and basically obsessing way too much. A couple of slices of bacon (no-nitrates/from trader joes) would solve the calorie problem, and I never restricted cheese. Just love it. My favorite treat is blueberries with heavy cream. Mentally, physically/spiritually I have never felt better. I don't measure or count calories. I eat when I'm hungry.
Good luck with what ever you do.

I was on strict Paleo for about 8 - 10 days....and by the end of that time I was so sick of it, it was unbelievable. I thought if I have to look at more unsalted meat and salads I'm going to throw up. And, like you, I simply could not bring my calories above 1000/day. I was concerned because I also tend to be low pH, which causes inflammation and I have a lot of that, but not as much as before I saw the doc. I had my doc's appt on Thursday, and she said, you HAVE to have some dairy (I'm allergic to cow dairy but can handle goat dairy fine) and some grains, so if you want to be strict with yourself, pick two grains you really like (again, I'm allergic to wheat and lots of other grains) and 2 - 3 dairy and we'll muscle test you for them for pH. So I picked goat yogurt, cheese and milk and oats and brown rice, and tested very strong on all of them emoticon !! She also said to use sea salt, moderately. Thank goodness, cause I feel so much better adding those few items back and everything tastes better.

I was also getting cramps in my legs from going strictly Paleo. So, maybe it works for some people, but not for this 75 yo body emoticon .

Hope you have good luck with it, too, by adding back in those things you need.

BTW I also found there is a difference between Robb Wolf and Loren Cordain's takes on Paleo. I am not familiar with the others, but I'm going back to what my holistic doc says will work for me, since it's worked for me for the past couple of months. emoticon

My opinion only- just do primal. I had severe cramping in my legs when I went strictly paleo but since adding whole fat plain yogurt and a serving of old hard cheese every day I am better. Don't beat yourself up worrying about what others will think of your efforts, you have already discovered that GF makes a huge difference in how you feel so continue with that while you get rid of all processed foods in your diet. You can do it!...MJ emoticon emoticon

Okay I am officially on day 5 but started 7 days ago, ( just wanted to really start on aug 1 LOL) Day 1 and 2 were pretty good. I am doing the anti inflammatory paleo which is very restricted ( robb wolfes book) and having some issues. First was my problem with breakfast the first 2 days, then day 3 was very ill, still not sure if was tocins or the sausages.
Day 4 and 5 I have found that I am not eating enough, super NOT hungry to the point of nauseous in am, not eating till lunch, - huge salad and meat, then supper stir fry or broiled veggies and meat. so always under 1,000 cals. a bit for fat, than protein and low carbs.
My main issue is that I went gluten free 3 wks ago and felt good, sstarting to show some good changes, better mental mood, smell things I haven't smelt in years, and maybe just maybe a tad bettter in my joints other than knees. Now day 4 and 5 ( or 6and 7 really) I am having extreme charly horses and cramps in my legs at night in bed, and even my back is so tight and sore just under the shoulders where bar line is that I can't move around without waking in pain. I have had the bad for years, but that I did find was going away with gf. but now back with vengance. even now sitting here my r calf feels as if it just finished a charlie horse and hubby says oh yea can see how tight it is.
so what now.
Honestly I started this cos my son convinced me that it was the way to get the inflammation out. I read on either daily apple or wolfs site a post that some people do get much better with the inflamation others it isnt' alway all diet, if you eat healthy and no proceessed which would be similar to primal ( will still say gf) you are fine. cos some people it is their body mechanics and posture ect that is more to blame for their stiff bodies. Well people I am almost in that camp. I don't know what to do.
Truthfully, I want to eat healthy with super limited or no processed stuff, but still have the fruit, nuts eggs. I feel that if we all eliminated the processed and stuck to a good balance of healthy stuff and not the processsed flours etc. not just gf store bought stuff, but making your own stuff we would be fine. I am not susre that there has to be such a dramatic shift either way.
So now wanting to add something back, hubby said add one thing and see for while.
also I know that htere will be some that will say, ha didnt' expect you to do it, surprised you lasted as long as you did, dil, ds will think it dil will say. dh expects that of me. you dont finish anything that is hard. so that makes me sad and want to prove them wrong.
but I just dont feel good so not sure stick it out and eat less than 1,000 cals a day cos just can't eat more food - if i eat a bigger salad will be vomiting... or start just being totally aware of healthy, foods and limiting arthritic stuff more and less fruit ect for sugar intake.
Sorry so long but feel lost and when I go to wolfs forum i dont get anwers fast or at all, and primal well a tad better but sorry know they are all so PRO it I find they will negate anything anyone says.
spark is safe, I know evryone doesn't agree and iI want both sides and know that here will get pro paleo but as we know there are many sparkers that have lost wt feel better and did it eating healthy whole foods....
hugs and help please!!!
