CINDYSUE I did much better on fibre today, but I do need a lot.

I did much better overall today. Things are not even close to the recommended but much closer than usual.

I found that raspberries are very high and they just happened to be on sale so that helped also.

I am no anemic but have been told to take a B12 vitamin so I am also watching this. I am only on day 12 and doing fine. I am finding things on the low side and switch things around. Right now I am concerned with the fibre. I feel I am not getting enough and trying to figure out how to get more, when I feel so full I couldn't eat any more. I am looking for some high fibre foods. I still cannot stand avocados which have been told have a lot.

I need to start counting calories again. I am having a really hard time with dairy but learning that with my anemia it isn't the best thing for me in fact it cancels out my iron so I feel even more tired. Is anybody on this board anemic? I start my Primal plan on June 1st.

Gosh, I can't even imagine NOT eating enough - with me it's the other way, I'm usually over what I set out to do. When I count "every" bite and/or morsel that goes in my mouth, I'm most always at or over my goals..........

I'm a counter too, like several of you I want to keep track of carbs/fiber so in doing that, notice the calories. I focus on getting enough protein/fat, and adjust where necessary if it looks like I've planned in too many carbs for the day (unlikely...). I have to be careful to eat enough!!! Crazy huh?!

I track all my food on the nutrition tracker - so of course I notice the calories, but I really only worry about the carbs. It makes me feel more secure for now....and it's a big help for analyzing the 'whys' when I am trending towards high blood sugar readings, feeling faint during workouts or have a small gain/stall.

When all these things reach a healthy stasis - I'm sure I'll feel confident enough to stop tracking - but I'm not there yet!

I'm a counter!! If you are just starting out and you are also trying to lose weight I think it's smart to be as well informed about everything you are eating as possible. I started at marksdailyapple.com for my paleo/primal research and per his "Carb Curve" I try to stay100g of carbs. I adjusted my calories to what works for me, and the protein and carb range on my spark nutrition page to what Mark recommends. When I stick to that plan it definitely works for me.

I think, for me the counting calories is a long ingrained habit from when I was a much younger person, being told over and over and over - to "count your calories". I'm finding I'm not nearly as obsessive about it as I was at one time in my life. I'm figuring if I stay on program and don't deviate, then my calories will be okay..

I'm trying to re-learn a lot of things that I've been taught since I was a child.. Not so easy to do, so it's a work in progress..

I agree with the "super obsessive path"- I realize that there are many here who are trying to lose weight while exploring Paleo but after a while it becomes evident that eating Paleo one's daily calorie intake will not vary very much and paleo exercise will also burn a regular amount of calories that will not deviate greatly. I find calorie counting to be a real distraction- as long as I an aware each day that I am eating a "ton" of veggies, a few good fruits and plenty of whoesome proteins I know I am OK. Yes I cheat, I am human after all- I do not eat candy, cake or ice cream- pure sugars after being paleo is deadly.

This is only my 5th day but I am counting calories because I tend to fill up easily on these foods and do not eat enough. I also have cholesterol in my blood, not much, but want to watch how much cholesterol I am taking in.

I am actually enjoying changing up my meals to see how much better I can make them.

Take a look at this post on the MDF forum about why counting calories is good for some people: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/threa
d29501.html

Some people DO just need to count as well as eat primal to lose the weight. And "eat more fat" is not always the answer. There IS some truth to the calories in/calories out notion, to an extent. Too many calories of even good food is still too many calories.

I say do what works for you. For myself, I don't count because it quickly goes down a super obsessive path for me and is somewhere I don't like to go.

At first I did not count calories eating this way and lost a few pounds , felt amazing but the real success of dropping the pounds came when I started counting my calories and keeping my carbs under a certain amount.

Curious about this, too ...

1st week under my belt (haha) and I lost 7 pounds! But, is it worth it to log nutrition here? I am right in there with calories, high in protein, "above goal" in fat, and "below goal" in carbs. That's how it should be, right?

Is the Nutrition Tracker based on USDA (or whatever)?

Thanks for any insight!

I was also thinking that another reason that it might be beneficial to me is that I am not doing any extreme workouts right now with a knee issue and hip issue.

I am doing P90X about 1 or 2 times a week and walking hills another 2 times a week....nothing like crossfit where I would need more calories.

Perhaps that is a reason I had such a good week....

well....it has been one week since I have been eating Paleo and keeping it to 1490 a day and....I am down 3.5lbs. When I wasn't counting - I was either staying even or gaining. I think it is beneficial to me for 2 reasons- I tend to binge when I am stressed and the last few weeks I have been eating a lot of nuts!!! Also- I have hypothyroidism and am in menopause- could I have anything else against me in my weight loss journey?!!! lol

I will report back in another week and let you know if I continue to see great progress eating this way....thanks for all your feedback. I really appreciate it! Lori

NO- I'm with Annie on this. When I did track calories I was always below what SP suggested but eating primal/paleo I just don't get raging hunger pangs anymore. Do what works best for you Ginger.

Everybody must do what seems best for them.
I don't count calories as it became a tedious waste of time for me and added a stressor I didn't need. I just go by what I know about food and nutrition and I work steadily on putting only nutrient dense foods on my plate and I also work diligently at keeping my portions where I know they need to be--it's a visual/mental thing that is only needed when I walk into the kitchen to prepare food and eat. I find that since I quit using the tracker and counting everything that I am actually eating much more sanely and I am eating much tastier meals using my own boundless creativity and simple food choices.

Tonight I had a half an apple followed by garlic and herb roasted chicken and some asparagus with a good sized glop of coconut oil melted on top. The whole thing was SO SO good and I could know by just looking at the plate that I was doing the absolutely right thing for my body. And I am feeling very satisfied in my tummy.

I'm losing weight too.
-annie

I stopped for a while but started again to get a good look and refine things as I need to. Left to my own devices I don't stay in the ranges I need to be in. I really do think the ratios are more important but it can't be good to go crazy in calories either.

Ginger,

I've been thinking the same thing. I know the book says you don't have to, and I will admit I've had a few cheat days, but the weight isn't really coming off like I'd expect it to. So I'm debating about counting calories while continuing to minimize my non-paleo meals. Maybe kick things into a higher gear.

I also need to ensure that I'm getting enough calories to survive my crossfit workouts without bonking. That hasn't been an issue so far, but I don't think my fitness is up there enough yet to get to that limit.

NOPE! Have you read 'Good Calories, Bad Calories' or 'Why We Get Fat'? They are by Gary Taubes. He explains very well (truly eye opening) why the calories in calories out theory does not work. If you are truly following paleo/primal diet you will see the weight- fat- come off. If not, check to see how many carbs you are taking in. It usually comes in the form of overdoing the fruits.
I do occasionally log my food to see my macronutrient numbers. I love seeing low carbs an HIGH fat! I'm actually blogging (on here vs other sites because I'm still a little chicken to post pics of myself for all the world to see) about eating paleo/primal and using myself as an example. I hope to show others that the fat will come off with a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet. Plus that bacon is actually good for you!!

I know that I can eat fewer calories and feel fine for that day, but the body will make you feel hunger to replace the calories burned (that's why low calorie diets are unsustainable).

I hope that helps. I would reccommend lowering your carbs to less that 100/day and upping your fat. If you are already consuming about 100g of carbs/day, try aiming for 50ish for a while and see if you weight budges. it should, going lower than 50g/day is very difficult, which typically means no veggies, limited dairy (if you do dairy) and absolutely no cheating.
