I haven't tried these yet, but I love the idea! It looks super easy to tailer the exercises to your own personal fitness level. Can't do one exercise?.....substitute something else!

A good Tabata workout is extremely intense... you wouldn't want to do one everyday for sure.

TACFIT (if you google) has a series of tabata workouts that you can download. They are not free, but you get quite a few.

Never head of them until now...so I went over to YouTube to check them out. All I have to say is no thank you! I hate super-intense exercises.

Something worth looking into for me...I hate ST! Have a hard time motivating myself to do it. And am quickly tiring of my gym routine! Haven't gone in a week! But you bet my a$$ was out there running in the nice weather we have been having! I like HIIT for the dreadmill...I might like it for ST also.

It's kind of like doing a HiiT workout. Start out with 1-2 times a week. I wouldn't do anymore than 3 times a week. Even in great shape.

How many days per week, especially starting out, is Tabata supposed to be done?

I do tabata. I push so hard there is no WAY I could do more than 4 minutes without resting for about 20 minutes in between.

I generally do dumbbell thrusters, but sometimes jump rope, actually on the jump rope days I could do more than one session.

Ah! You don't need a gym to do tabata. You can interchange any type of exercises for a tabata workout. You can do cardio, or body weight exercise. You can use dumbells or resistance bands...
to me a tabata workout is especvially suited for when you are travelling and are short of time AND equipment. All you need is a clock. If you don`t have a clock, you can just count. lol

Fit, thanks for the great links.
Luv2Run, I googled crossfit, and the nearest is an hour drive (2 hrs roundtrip) for me where I live, which is fairly rural. Can't do that. :(

Living in a small town, there are no fitness gyms - I have seen crossfit gym videos and was amazed at the intensity of the workout. Thanks for the mention of the Tabata workout - watched a couple examples on madefittv.com and YouTube.

Wow! I like the idea, and can see how I can interchange it with movements I am strong enough (at this stage) in doing!

Thanks for the link to the interval timer!

Oh! I LOVE Tabata workouts!

I posted this on one of my other teams...
I'm gonna do this Tabata workout on Friday. Thought I would share:

Start with a 5-10 minutes warm-up. Use treadmill, elliptical or do some aerobic floorwork. Anything you like to get your heart rate up and your muscles warm.

Each exercise is done for 4 minutes. You go ALL OUT for 20 seconds then rest for ten seconds. Do this 8 times. Make sure you are working at at least a 9 on the perceived exertion scale.

Rest 1 minute, then move on to the next exercise.

Here are the exercises:

Burpees
Mountain Climbers
High Knees
Jumpiong Jacks

When each interval is complete, do a cool down and stretch.

Here is a handy Tabata Timer:

I've been researching this intense interval training form of exercise, and decided to give it a try before my regular workout this morning. After 4 minutes of it, my thoughts were if this doesn't knock the excess fat off my booty, then nothing will. LOL
I have been doing some strenuous hikes, dumbbells, kettle bells, walk/runs- so I have built some strength and endurance which I feel has helped prepare me for starting a Tabata routine. I also like Tabata as the sprinting part of a Paleo/primal lifestyle because I can't see myself running across a field like I'm being chased by a grizzly!
Any insights, advice, links, etc. will be greatly appreciated since I am a newbie.
