Thank you very much! Very encouraging to here. I can't wait to cross a finish line, but for now virtual 5Ks will do!

Hey Here2BMe just some encouragement. I have been in 4 5k races and haven't been able to run 1 completely. But I have to tell you that getting to the finish line ranks up there with my wedding day and the birth of my children. It is so awesome. You can do it!

Hi Ladies,
I've decided... I'm going to train for the BMO Vancouver Half rather than the Calgary Marathon Half or the Run for Water. I was going to do the Calgary one because it's closer and we know people there, but my hubby and I chatted and decided Vancouver would be fun for a change!
The only trouble is I just realized the race is 3 weeks earlier so my training plan starts Sunday instead of starting on the 22nd. emoticon

I haven't registered yet, I'm waiting to find out which one works in with family plans, but there is the Calgary Marathon (Calgary AB) or the Run for Water (Vancouver BC). Likely the Calgary one, it's closer, but they are both on May 27, so I have my training plan in place either way.

Well! I bet if I spent more time on our team page than I have been lately, I would have seen Isabelle's post that two of our fellow runner gals have stepped up to help us co-lead the team! Thank you, HOMATA and MJASR5 for accepting the co-leading offer. Isabelle and I really appreciate that you have raised your hands to assist!

Hi Hollie~

This is a catch-all kind of thread where gals can check in and say hello...touch base on how things are going...what's new with running...etc...however, it's not been very busy as of late.
This time of year is kind of slow for many with running, and the holidays...maybe the New Year will bring some more energy!

For everyone~Isabelle and I are looking for gals who may be interested in co-leading...and potentially taking the reins from us to lead this awesome group of runnin' ladies. Isabelle has not been running nearly as much as she used to...and I find that work and life are so crazy for me sometimes that I feel like I can't give enough time and energy to this team. We don't want to see the team become stagnant or fade away....please, if you're interested, contact one or both of us via SparkMail (for some reason I'm not getting mail notifications, so will be more diligent about checking in)...we'd love the extra helping hands.

Thank you, and keep running....slow, fast, short distance or long, treadmill, roadway or trails, Galloway Method or just all out running...it matters not how you do it, only that you are moving the body!

The New Year is coming right up! What's on your race schedules? What goals have you set for yourself for the upcoming season?

Just checking out all the threads in this forum... I thought this "nothing in particular" thread would be a good one to check in on occasionally and use it to get to know others on the team... Kind of a chit chat thing? Anyone have any thoughts?

Just a quick note of hello at the end of November...this thread hasn't been too awful active, but glad to see the group overall has been pretty active. Please, don't hesitate to suggest changes to our Team page and threads, shoot me a Sparkmail or post on my Sparkpage. Honestly, I've not been nearly as active here and I probably should be, both in support of our team AND to keep myself on track. Am working on being more involved, and Isabelle and I are looking for gals to assist in Co-leading this great team! I've posted the December Mileage Challenge Thread in the Goals and Challenges section...if you've been using it, you know you've got some support there for your accomplishments...if you're not, feel free to check it out and join in anytime....
Take care, enjoy the time you spend putting one foot in front of the other, no matter where you are...

The cool weather is here...hopefully y'all are getting out and enjoying it! I love this time of year...the smell of Fall, the cusp of Winter is just heavenly...
Headsup, I've posted the November Mileage Challenge Thread in the Goals and Challenges section...those that are participating are doing great...it's a good place to cheer others on and to get some support as well as you reach toward your mileage goals.
Take care, enjoy the time spent out on the road, on the trails, or even in the gym on that darn Dreadmill...it's all about frame of mind and you can make it fun regardless of the location.

The heat was so hard on me too. My body does not handle heat well at all. So I'm going to work back up to it too. Did a run on Thursday morning so didn't run Friday. Yesterday I did a very strenuous 4 mile hike and still feeling the effects of the hike, ST on Friday, and the run on Thursday. May try to run later or may go for another hike. But next week I want to get my runs in every other day again and get back to it.

I've had to start over a few times for various reasons over the past year and a half, and I still keep coming back to running. I'm so glad we don't have to be fast or perfect or elite to be a part of this and to be runners.

Love those quotes Linda, so true!! :)

Here2bme - I am glad that your dh got the A/C fixed....now you are all set to go!

I had a good run yesterday. I wasn't sure how it would be...we were getting the outskirts of Hurricane Maria...so it was very windy. Cool....but sunny. I did a one-way run, and had DH pick me up when I was finished (i know..i know..lol) but anyway, had a great push and the cooler temps and all just put me in a good place. I do love fall running!

Tomorrow I am in a duathlon....on a team, and I am the biker. It is a run/bike/run. I will be biking 24K or so. I don't bike a lot...but figure I can get through it. So...today will be a rest day for me, no running or biking today.

Hope you all have a good weekend :)

Such great advice guys! I feared I would not be accepted here due to I am not as fast or can run as long as everyone else, but is a goal of mine. I am on my 3rd go around with c25k . I have learned (the hard way) it's okay to not be perfect. Have incorporated that into other areas of my life as well. On an even brighter note, my Dh got the A/C working! yea! That means I will not be a run behind for for c25k, i can do it tomorrow.

have a good evening and a great weekend!

HERE2BME, I still use walk breaks when I run a 5K for two primary reasons. First, it makes the race more fun. Second, I'm faster when I use walk breaks. Since those are also my two primary reasons for racing -- to have fun running as fast as I can -- why wouldn't I choose to walk and run? Win win, in my book.

HERE2BME I can't run a full 5k yet either without some walking. THere are a couple of quotes about who is a runner that I really like, both by big names in the running world who have lots of articles published.

I often hear people say 'I'm not a real runner!' We are all runners, some just run faster than others, that's all. I have never met a fake runner - Bart Yasso of Runner’s World

If you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run. ~ John Bingham

So it doesn't matter how far or fast you run. If you run at all you're a runner!

I wish I wasn't scared to go walking/jogging outside by myself. My A/C acted up this morning and didn't finish my TM workout. I will do it tomorrow hopefully (on my off day) after hubby checks it out.

Good for you DRPOOH63, I love running in the fall...so refreshing or something. You will eventually get your running legs back, good luck on your 10K!

I did a 10K yesterday, it was extremely muggy from Hurricaine Irene, but the rain held off. I think everyone was feeling the humidity, and there was a killer hill at the end. But, I had a good time for me, 58:10 so I was happy.

Today, the air is much more clear and it would be a great running day :)

Now that it is heading into Fall, I have started to ramp back up on my running as the weather gets cooler. Of course, I am slow and my running legs had become bike legs so am doing the run/walk thing getting ready to do a 10k at the end of September.

Hi there Here2bme! When I started running that is exactly how I did it as well....and did it that way for awhile. You are DEFINITELY a runner....whether its one minute, two, or a half a minute :)
I actually started running 8-9 yrs ago, so its been awhile for me. Just do whatever you are comfortable with, take it easy and slow but keep on going!

Wow, everyone here are "real" runners. Feeling like I don't fit in. I do walking running intervals. I want to run like everyone else, but cannot YET. Am I the only one who cannot run a straight 5K? I can walk/run one, but not solidly run.

Hi Goddess, it sounds like you have been through quite an ordeal with the pneumonia and all that came with it. But, you are doing great, restarting can be difficult but your strength will come back and you will feel good again.

We have the same goal weight.....I am nearly there, so close but just can't seem to quite get there! Good luck with your 10K in Sept....keep on running :)

Hello everyone! I am not new to the team, or to running, but I have never posted in this particular forum. I started running in January of 2009, running 1/8 mile was a huge challenge, and was actually one of my first mini goals. Since then, in the fall of 2009, I completed 2 10K's, then a 1/2 marathon in April of 2010. I ran 3 5k's, and a 10K in the remainder of that year, then I was diagnosed with pneumonia in October of 2010 and was sidelined from running for a horrible 4 months. I started back to "running" in February doing intervals of walk 5 minutes, run 1. I slowly built up my endurance and ran 5K again in May of 2011. I have been training to run 10K since then, but it has been very slow. I have had to make myself run only once a week, more than that has been too much. Because, I gained back over 40 pounds since my illness and the uncontrolled eating that followed it. The extra weight and need to completely restart my running training has been very difficult to accept. My speed is very slow right now, with an average pace over a 15 minute mile being my absolute best right now. I can feel my body getting stronger though, and I will be patient with myself. My short term running goal is to run my 10K race on September 18. My long term running goal is to complete a full marathon in the Fall of 2012, and my current goal is to reach my goal weight which is 135 pounds. Right now I am trying to get to 185, and hoping to be able to get to 180 by September and find myself able to run twice a week starting then.

Hi, I'm Laura. I'm new to the team!!
I enjoy running but sometimes it can become a challenge for me. In 2008 I was hit head on by another vehicle. I shattered my right knee and broke my femur. Along with a collapsed lung and broken ribs. I need all the support at times while trying to push myself through the pain. I forever have 3 screws in my knee and a rod that's thru my femur. I'll never let it stop me from doing the things I love like RUNNING!!

Along with a collapsed lung and broken ribs. I need all the support at times while trying to push myself through the pain. I forever have 3 screws in my knee and a rod that's thru my femur. I'll never let it stop me from doing the things I love like RUNNING!!

Had a good run today mostly but some of the "hill" work (we don't really have hills as I think of them in Northern IL) is causing me some hip pain. It's right at the front of my hip and only really seems to show up when I'm going up a hill. Anyone else ever deal with this? It really cuts my speed down.

Thnx :)

@bluetawny, semuspark has some good ideas. Another one is if you can afford to buy a weighted vest and run with that for a few weeks, when you take it off you'll be stronger & faster (tip from my buddy who is a personal trainer) he reccommends sprints too. At the end of each of my runs I push myself faster than I think humanly possible, just for 1/4 of a lap or something, short sprint, just KILL IT, and it makes my body go "WTF?!" and adapt to be ready for it next time :) (also a tip from my buddy who is a personal trainer, worked for me :)

Great job on getter a faster mile time Natalie!

@Bluetawny: Maybe try interval training and/or some sprint work? I find that I'm also pretty comfortable with my 8:30/8:45 mile pace when I run outside by myself but when I do sprints, I force myself out of my comfort zone. You can also try running on a treadmill and slowly increasing your speed. Hills also help with strength...after doing hill sprints, running on flat ground feels so easy!

Does anyone have any tips on how I can get faster. I have been doing 5k for a long time already and can't seem to go any faster than 11 min mile. I would like to get to between 9 and 10 minute files. Any ideas?

I'm new to running, just started a month and a half ago but now I run 3 miles at the track 6 nights/week :) :) My fastest mile so far is 11:13, started at 15 though!

I am a slow runner as well, and I love my garmin, it tells me exactly how far, how fast and if I worked out in my heart rate zone. I use it to keep me on track. It is very beneficial.

You don't have to be fast to find the Garmin useful. It gives you feedback on your own performance (distance, speed, heart rate, etc.) that allows you to track your own progress. It can be very motivating.

I really want a Garmin, but then I think that since I am a slower runner should I really get one?

Steph, how did you like the new Garmin? We have an old model, I think its a 205. What kind of bells and whistles does it have?

Are there any other barefoot runners in this group?

I love life and all it has to offer. It is a gift.

I am here to support whomever I can and to find people to support me as well. Because, if it were easy enough to do it alone, none of us would be here.

If you live somewhere hot, like I do... I found it to be a really nice change of pace. I don't think I'd want to do it all the time... but it was neat. :)
