I've got a 5 mile tempo run coming up this evening after work. Longest run this year, thanks to my hip flexor injury. I'm excited!

Starting to get things in place to start my half training. Didn't manage to get on the mill until 8:30 tonight, but my legs felt fresh. I ate really well today- all good stuff, which I think makes a difference at the end of the day. Did some tempo miles- I have a lot of work to do to break 2 hours. emoticon

Glad you got to head out!!!
I was hesitant about going on my run today, but I pay my coach to put me on a schedule, so I need to follow it. I will be glad when I can run more than 3 miles at a time. It is slow coming back from this hip flexor injury. It was cold and the snow was like little ice pellets. But I got out there and did my 3 miles. Brrrr.

I came home from a 4H competition around 3pm feeling tired and really yucky from eating too many squares at the dessert table. I just wanted to lay my a** down and nap. However, the weather was beautiful, I was not on call, and supper didn't have to be ready until 6 so I got some running gear on and went north. The 4 miles I did were really hilly and I had to stop twice because I could feel the cake pops coming up to haunt me. The nausea passed, the endorphins kicked in and I managed to enjoy the rest of it. It's really true- getting up and out is the biggest battle- you never feel sorry that you went. emoticon Run on girls!

Thanks Jeriberi. I like the idea of less mileage, but making the ones you are doing really count. I find that my body just can't handle as much running as it used to so doing something different a few days a week keeps my legs fresher. I have spoken to many people who have set PRs running 3 days a week. I hope your injury heals up quick!

Welcome back!!
I'm recovering from a hip flexor injury, and want to have my half time down to sub-2 by October. My coach has me on a 3-day schedule: 1st day run, 2nd day swim, 3rd day XT with spin/row/whatever. Each day also has specific strength training to go along with it. I'm supposed to do this plan for 3 weeks, and then we'll add more. The swim and spin I've been doing the last few months has made my short runs faster than before the injury.

I am back on spark people to lose a little to help me run a little faster. Looking to break 2 hours in a half I am running at the end of May. My PR is 2:03. Those darned 3 minutes really annoy me!
I am doing a 3 day a week running program- one day long, one day tempo, and one day intervals. Will add in 2 to 3 days a week of cross training- mostly strength.
NKOUAMI- Runner's World is definitely the place for running plans- free or you can sign up with smart coach for under $30.
Did 4.25 miles at lunch today- still feeling the endorphins!

I am back to running again which I don't think most people say as the snow starts to fly. So much easier for me to get out when it is cold then when it is hot.

Welcome to the group!! When I need a training plan, I use Runners World Smart Coach. Here's the link: smartcoach.runnersworld.com/smartcoa

Tonight I'm running a Zombie obstacle 5K. It should be tons of fun! PLUS... I just registered for the Flying Pig Marathon. I tried to run it last year, but I had trouble with my right shoulder (it's a shoulder replacement), and I thought the prosthesis had come unseated. It was extremely painful, and I couldn't finish the race. I took a DNF at 13 miles. Turns out, I had a muscle tear, and that's what was so painful. My prosthesis was fine. Whew! Anyway... I went on to run the Hatfield-McCoy full 6 weeks later. But I've got some unfinished business with a pig. Come May, that pig is gonna be bacon!

Hello ladies, I am looking for a training program to improve my endurance and also one for training for a half-marathon. I am planning to register for one next year and I want to start a program and build up my speed as well as my endurance. I mostly run on the treadmill even though I do outdoor running 2x weekly (this is just to know my pace, as I don't possess any fancy equipment yet...those watches are expensive for me right now)...any help would be greatly appreciated

I had the hardest time learning to find a pace... I didn't have one and I was all over the place. Then I'd burn out and would be struggling to get back in. My sister has been running for years finally paced me. She wouldn't let me pass her, I'd have to stay right with her. Our coach had us start with 3:1 intervals and then go to 5:1...but I would struggle with them. I can do them for short runs but anything over 7 miles is really hard. So I actually went to 1:1 and 2:1 and I can keep up or finish before our 5:1 group. It's easier for me to recover and not feel like I'm going to blow out a lung.

While I'm helping my daughter learn to pace, on our long runs we will run until the timer goes off at 5 minutes, and then walk for 30 seconds. If we don't do that, she goes out the first 3-4 miles at an 8:45 pace, and then can't go any longer. She's a good runner on the short runs, but has no pacing ability at all on the longer runs. Walking is the only thing that keeps her at a steady pace.

I do interval training and I sometimes wonder if that is how I will run forever. I have a hard time with walk breaks under 2 minutes. I was was running 4 and walking 2, but this week I am running 5 and walking 3. How often do you (anyone) change your interval times? Any tips?

Kim, walks don't help much if you wait until you are tired to start them. If you are tired, of course your brain will want to shut you down.

With the Galloway method, you alternate running and walking on a set pattern, using an interval timer to tell you when to walk or to run. Since you start this from the beginning of the run, before your legs are tired, it is easy to switch back and forth, and doing so delays fatigue. Most people starting out use one minute for the walk and one, two, or three minutes for the run. I've been using this method for some time, and my walk breaks are usually 10 to 20 seconds. My best marathon time so far is 4:48, and I used 30 second run, 10 second walk for that one.

Hmmm... I've got a dilemma, which race to choose. I've got a ton of friends running a 5K in a neighboring town, about 20 minutes away from me. I like that race a lot, and I love running with my friends (they are all from the neighboring town on the OTHER side of that town, so 20 minutes from there the other direction). I get to run with them every few months or so...

On the other hand... There is a local 3K in MY town that day, sponsored by the local XC team and Rotary Club. This is the first year our high school has had a XC team, and I really want to support the team. I'd even thought of running the 3K at 8:00, and then rushing to get to the 5K that starts at 9:00. But I don't think I'd make it in time. So I'm torn. Support the local team, or race with all my friends. Ugghhh

Live2Run4Life- What is the Galloway Run/Walk method?

DEE- I hear what you're saying on the run walk deal. I typically run for as long as my body will allow me to before I take a walk break only because I know once I do take it.....most of the rest of the "run" will be spent in "walk" mode. My mental state has broke down after that....

I cannot run/walk....... (mentally) Once I take a walk break, I take MORE walk breaks. LOL

I usually run until a water stop, walk while I take a few sips, then take off running again.

I've run two marathons, but I've had a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis since I was 23, and sometimes the training is really hard on my joints. I have to seriously pay attention to how I feel. I also have a lupus overlap. My body likes half marathons, but I will push it to full if there's one I particularly want to do.

OMG, that's awesome! What an awesome inspiration you are. I am just picking this up at 43 (which was two years ago really), so now, turning 45, I am ready to get more serious about it and dedicate some time to crafting it. Thanks once again for the inspiration! Good luck with your ELEVENTH marathon....quite the accomplishment.

I started running when I was 59. Before that, I was exercising on a treadmill, but never thought of myself as a runner. I signed up for a 5K as a way to motivate me to stay with the treadmill program.

I loved that race and discovered that off the treadmill and on the road I was, in fact, a runner. That was 3 and half year ago. I am about to run marathon #11 on Saturday (I'm 62 now.)

WOW, see that's what's inspiring to me. The unexpected runner. My sister is now inspiring me to push harder. Her friend (Jenn) started because her sister signed both of them up one New Year as something they would do together. Now Jenn is a fanatic about it running about 15 miles on the weekend just because, and her sister (that signed them up) doesn't run quite so much. It's very interesting to me how people have come to this sport and what motivates them to continue on. Thanks for your inspiring stories!

I started running when I was 49 years old. I'd been walking for 4-6 miles a day. One day the cicadas hatched out, and I had to keep running through the piles of cicadas flying everywhere. My walk was at a zippy 12 minute pace!! So I thought, "Hey, I can run!" So I did. Three months later I ran my first 5K, and within 6 months I'd run a half marathon. Then at almost my one year mark, I ran my first full.I'm 53 now, and I'm still running, still getting faster.

I started running when I was 44 years old, no atheletic backgrown whatsoever! My daughter in law had started running to lose weight, and she asked me to go with her one morning, I went, and almost quit, but when we got to the finish, and I found out I really could do it, I was hooked!

WOW, JeriBeri, you are my hero! I am new to running (again). I am trying to get to the runner's high that my runner friends keep telling me I will one day experience. I have always been the sprinter, never the distance runner. I was challenged one day by my cousin to do a ten miler where you end up on the 50 yard line of Soldier Field. Being they Chicago Bears lover that I am, I took up the challenge....let's just say I was glad it was a run/walk. From there, I did a 5K Hot Chocolate run ('cause who wouldn't run for CHOCOLATE!), and just completed the Warrior Dash this year. I am starting my running training once again for another 5k in early November. My problem is, the pace my legs are comfortable with, is not the same that my lungs are comfortable with and I have a problem marrying the two up. So, I'm working on that.

How did you all get into running? Did someone challenge you, have you always been a runner? And when did you know you LOVED it, or experienced the "runner's high"?

I run 5 days a week, strength train two days a week, rest two days a week. Usual schedule is M Rest T Run & ST, W Run, Th Run & ST, F Run, S Rest, S Long Run

I average 40-50 miles a week with a cut back to 35 periodically. I'm training for a goal marathon on 2 December.

My normal week:
Sat & Sunday, 8-14 miles each day, or shorter if they are hard runs.
Mon & Fri, 2 mile walk
Tues, 5 mile run
Wed, 6-7 mile run
Thurs 3-5 mile run

On even days of the month I do 100 push ups and 100 sit ups. And on random days, as the mood sees fit, I do whatever strikes me as fun. Sometimes hulahooping, sometimes strength training.

Hey there gals! Just a quick shout out to Dee...and the rest of our Team Leader gals...for keeping our dear team rolling...
I'm sorry I've not spent as much time here as I would like, and I'm so happy to see that folks are still here and still chatting about running...
Let's keep this team strong and steady, it's a good group of people!
I'll do my best to pop in more often...I'm still running pretty strong, not so fast, but strong...have another half marathon coming up in a couple weeks and my second marathon on the 30th...nervous but excited to see a dear friend I haven't seen in years.
Run smooth, run strong...

My husband and I bought a treadmill that had iFit live and Google maps on it to encourage us to use it more. We have had it for a few weeks, and I have probably used it more in those few weeks than I did the other one we had for 5 years! I love it because with ifit live accounts you can program a training schedule that is suited to your ability level. Well, yesterday I did the first workout of the beginning level 5k. I am proud to say that I was able to keep up with the speed almost the whole time. I LOVED it! Yay for me!

Had an awesome experience today. Planned to go on a run with a former student of mine, who's 20 years old (20 years my junior). She's a college rugby player and was an athlete in high school. We planned to do 3.1 miles, and I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to keep up with her. Well, half way through the run, which I was doing slow because I realized she couldn't keep up with me, she asked to walk! We walked for a while and then I suggested doing walk/run intervals. She did a couple of those and then again wanted to walk. So we walked the rest of the way. I was definitely feeling like I could have run several more miles--and I'd barely broken a sweat.

So good to feel so in shape and so athletic. At the end she was both a little embarrassed and pretty complimentary toward me. It's not like I'm super fast (11 minute miles for a 5k), but it does go to show that fitness is about work, not about youth or natural endowment. And I've been working--and it's paid off!

Yea!

~Peri

Finished the first of my 2 tris last weekend. Great recovery but not a great time. Finished and sometimes that is what it is. Have decided I am not training correctly - still training like it is my first one and I need to work on speed training. So am adding that. One day at a time.

Just joining into the team after many months away from Spark. Finished my third HM in May and took too many weeks off after that. This week I am determined to get up early and run before work. So far I am 2/2! Tonight is my first 5k in about 2 months and I am running with my 7YO DS. It will be his first 5k and I am very excited for him to experience it!

Sounds like everyone is plugging along. I have a tri in 2 weeks and am pretty sure I will be lucky to run very much of it. But I know I will have a strong finish. Not doing great with my training - which is what usually happens this time of year - not a fan of the heat - but doing better each day.

Belated Congratulations JERIBERI1!

After two weeks of doing nothing (ugh), I finally finished week 4 of C25K this morning. I'm re-reading what I was thinking about doing earlier in the month. I still want to get up to 10K by the fall but I'm also toying with a half. I thought about it two years ago and know I could have done it if I wanted to...hmmm...

Dee, my shoulder was good! I really was pleased with this race. It had been 2 months since I'd had a 20+ mile run, and 5 weeks since I'd run double digits at all. I was strong all the way through mile 20, and then it got really tough. But I enjoyed it so much, I will do this race again.

I ran the Hatfield-McCoy Marathon on Saturday. After taking a DNF in mile 13 at the Flying Pig, I was really needing a good race. And what a good race it was!!! Was it speedy? No. Was it great fun? Yes. It's the most fun you can have in 26.2 miles.

Saying Hi and reintroducing myself. I got into running in 2009 and ran a lot in 2009 and 2010 (5K's and 10K's and started biking/doing triathlon stuff). Then I took off a bit more time than I had planned.

I'm back onto week 4 of C25K. It's not as petrifying as doing it the first time around! And it always feels good! Looking forward to getting back into it again. I'd like to work my way back up to 10K status by the Fall which seems totally doable even with some "lost" weeks in there.

(PS: I love my New Balances. I've loved them since I was in my teens - I don't care if they are an "old people" shoe. My husband has tried to get me to change shoes and every time I HATE them and they hurt my feet. New Balance Forever for me!)

Hey there ladies! I just posted the June Monthly Mileage Thread for those of you who are interested in tracking mileage and cheering one another on as we put the miles on...

Note, I'll be away from the computer a bit this month as the last two weeks of the month I'll be off with work and the first two weeks will be crazy busy getting ready to be off with work. SO...hope that you're all out and about enjoying the Summery weather...I look forward to catching up just in time for the July Mileage Thread.

Take care, run smooth....

Warrior Dash is a lot of fun. Just be sure to keep your mouth closed in the pond. All the people going through before you will kill the fish. I'm not sure if they get kicked to death, or if stirring the sediment depletes the oxygen in the water. In any case, there will likely be dead fish in the water, and it will smell like the bottom of a dirty aquarium. And, from experience, I know that it tastes disgusting and gross. emoticon

No, it wasn't my first. My first was in 2009. I'm running another on June 9th, with no time goal in mind. And then I want to run the Monumental Marathon with a time goal.

Jeri, so sorry to hear about the pain! Was this your first marathon?? Good luck on the test run tonight!

My spring training is NOT going. I ran the OKC Memorial Half Marathon and then took a week off, I have ran 3 miles this week and have a 10k on Saturday. After that, I think I will focus on INSANITY and speedwork, not worry so much about mileage....

My spring running is going well. I ran the Flying Pig Marathon, but only went 13 miles. My titanium shoulder replacement did not hold up to my pace, and it was too painful to continue. I blame a lot of it on my push up challenge. 4500 push ups into the 12,000/yr challenge, I'm going to have to back out. Boo hiss. My arm is finally feeling better today, and I'm getting ready to take it for a test run :-)

I wore NIKE for years, and had blisters and black toenails, but after being fitted and analyzed..... I now wear NEW BALANCE! I know right?!?!? The old people's shoe! Ha Ha

But I no longer have blisters and my toenails are all nice and healthy!

I've been seeing a lot of people with the minimalist shoes...Everyone I've asked really likes them---giving them some thought in the near future.

I am a minimalist shoe person, sometimes even going barefoot. For short runs I wear aqua shoes. It's not something you can just up and change to, but it works for me. For long runs, I wear Newtons. Love, love, love the Newtons!!!

Just popping in to say hi. I just started running, and I'm on week 2 of the couch to 5k. I find I'm getting excited for run days to see what I can do. Goal for this year is an 8k in November!

Hi Ladies,
As it is, I don't get on the computer as much as I'd like, and I'm in this round of the BLC, so sorry if it is making me neglect my other groups! Just wanted to check in and say that I hope you're all having a great weekend.

I was tied for second place for weight loss the first week !! But then this past week I gained a pound! We're doing a "Totatally 80's" theme this week, and everyone's throwing out 80's tunes for GOYBAD (Get Off Your Butt And Dance) challenges, so that's been fun!

Think I'm skipping my run today in favour of going out for a snow shoe day with my family!

xoxo Hollie
