Great point about the value of specificity in a resume. Absolutely essential for pushing one's resume to the top of the pile!

Thx for jumping into the dialogue with your insights! :-)

The aesthetics of a résumé matter during some aspects of the job hunt (job fairs, online applications that include the upload of a Word or PDF version of the résumé, in-person interviews). However, good content is absolutely critical to gain further consideration by an employer.

The top way to make over résumé content is to eliminate bullet points that simply rehash your job duties. Instead, use accomplishments that concretely show how you added value as an employee. Include numbers that will ensure that prospective employers will clearly understand the talents you will bring with you to a position. Don't say, "Significantly increased sales during FY 2011." Say, "Drove an average of 19% sales growth per quarter in FY2011 during initiative to expand market base."

Okay, I'm calmer now - someone emailed me back promptly and had manually reset my password. I got in and changed a few things, including my level of visibility (watch the default on that!), and on a different template it flowed smoothly to two pages. There are limits in how it frames and defines education and achievements, but for some people I think this would work great!

(I'm so relieved to not be involuntarily advertising myself!!)

The glitch is getting worse... My password doesn't work - and both times I have clicked on the link to reset it, no email to me is generated! I cannot go in an create a new resume because the old one is tied to my email address. I am so frustrated I could scream! All my work and educational history is plastered out there with my full name for anyone to look at, and I can't get to it to change it (and I did not see a delete option before I'd signed out last night either, by the way). I can't even start over without getting a new email address!!

I would cautiously recommend using the site IF you have a very short, concise resume, and you click on the 'hide all' option (I did not understand what that meant). I think that it is an easy tool to use, but there are some aspects of the site that are very poorly explained. If you are not comfortable with putting a lot of your personal information out there on a site based in Prague, then I would avoid it... :)

My next step is to send a "contact us" email about either deleting all my information or manually resetting my password!!!

Hey thx for the road test...sorry for the scare, but thx again for a head's up so that others can be careful to select the "hide all" feature.

Outside of this glitch, it sounds like you found it worthwhile...?

Holy cow!! Heads up - if you use this site be sure to flag your resume as "hide all" because they don't tell you but they will make it ALL available to other users to look at!!! Crikey, I'm freaking out! The site defaulted to hiding my contact information but my whole name, work history, and education is out there for the world to see. I did not create an account so I'm doing that now and will go in and hide it all... Eek.

Wow, I finally had time to play with that and it's pretty cool. However, someone like me with a two-plus page academic resume apparently can't make it work! Mine spilled over off the template. I'm going to try again and not do the 'big' resume but a simpler one for client work... Maybe the clipboard template... :) This was fun - thanks for the link!!

Give your résumé a makeover

Courtesy of Kim Komando:

"Your résumé is the first thing a prospective employer sees about you. How do you make your résumé stand out from the hundred other résumés?

Why not give it the spiffiest-looking makeover H.R. has ever seen? Resumesimo is a website loaded with full-color graphical résumé templates.

Just take 10 minutes to plug in your data and you'll have a shiny résumé ready to go.

Templates are organized by the type of job you're applying for. Design templates will be avant-garde, engineering ones will be functional. Plus, you can swap templates around at your leisure without inputting all your info again."
