Don, I had to laugh - I enjoyed the "alone but not lonely" story, but it raised some childhood abandonment issues in me! Not bad ones, but I was raised in slight isolation and I related differently to the story. LOL Did you see the quote posted next to the story?

"Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one." - Stella Adler

Rather 'life', I think it's my own head, expectations, and overdeveloped sense of responsibility that beats me down! I don't have time to do anything arty today, but my self-care plan is to do enough housework to feel like my home is welcoming but not so much that I feel burdened by it. We have snow here (not much) and it will get icy tonight so a friend may spend the night with me to save some icky driving in the morning. A little housework will be good for my soul but it won't smother it in a misguided sense of Duty...! :)

Those links were very interesting! I've read a little about mindfulness, but anxiety, constant motion, school work, and other pressures have way of derailing good and mindful intentions...

I got a new client today and while there won't be a lot of billable hours out of this, it is a business and ownership that has ethics and their values seem to be very similar to mine. I think I can consider that conversation and connection a form of self-care :), but I am going to try to practice mindfulness at least one time each day for 10 minutes to observe my thoughts. I love that idea.

And I was only at my mom's apartment the other night for about two hours and I didn't come out of there feeling like an in-patient who had been discharged too soon... LOL The dogs and I came home intact! :)

An idea that caught my eye while working out today at the fitness center. Dr. Oz was on and a tip came up on the screen (I don't listen to the show...prefer my tunes & CC which wasn't working, grrr...but at least I caught this printed tip!):

Dedicate 10 minutes a day to mindfulness.

What's mindfulness? Here is a definition that works for me:

www.psychologytoday.com/basics/mindf
ul
ness

"Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you're mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to experience."

We can deliberately meditate to attain mindfulness, but there are other activities which work also. There is mindful walking or running. Gardening works for many as a means for attaining mindfulness. What works for you? Consider trying to take 10 minutes a day to be mindful.

Here are a few other links about mindfulness:

I TOTALLY understand. If it weren't for my family, I would have little stress.
(Well, except for losing job 2 years ago. Before that, they were my big stress.)

emoticon WE can do it!

Please keep us posted

Leaving my job and going to school full-time has put me in a weird, unexpected place in life. Then my [crazy] mother (personality-challenged) moved back to the area, and I think I was expected to become her social life, her caretaker (she doesn't need one), and her emotional support since I do not have kids, a husband, or a job (all those "legitimate" things that occupy time). It has been a somewhat lonely ride (six more classes to go), and I have found that self-care came easier to me when I could validate my needs with income.

Now as a non-income producing type person (other than a few clients), I look for ways to ease my anxiety, relax my jaw muscles, and protect my time that do not cost much or anything. I am still not very good at it!

Today my self-care plan involves reading for at least an hour - something recreational and NOT school related! I am also running over to my mom's apartment for a little bit, but my self-care plan also includes limiting my time there because there is still a part of me that is afraid Crazy is contagious...

Being without employment can be one of the toughest stressors that life can send our way.

And with that stress anyone can stumble and react in ways that aren't helpful:

such as by overeating ( t-healthy.blogspot.com/2012/01/harva
rd
-medical-school-how-stress-can.html
)

or not eating enough

or making poor food choices

or withdrawing from supportive people

or becoming more sedentary

or spending more time zoning out to the television

Well how about a challenge for our SparkTeam? Let's be sure to take time at least once a day to do something which is kind to ourselves. Come back to this thread and share what you've done today to take care of yourself in some little or maybe some major way. Let's inspire each other with our actions by sharing them here!

It may be something as simple as taking a few minutes during the day when you close your eyes and give yourself permission to totally clear your mind of the usual muddle of thoughts and to-do's and allow yourself to relax and enjoy a peaceful moment. Or to take a walk. Or to totally organize a room in your house or apartment. Or to pump yourself by going up and down stairs a number of times. Or to invite a friend or family member over for lunch or coffee.

Let's take care of ourselves, share how we did it and help each other to stay healthy and well and primed for new opportunities!

Here are a few ideas to consider at the link below, but I am MOST interested to see what all of YOU find helps yourselves!
