I am no doctor but aren't some things absorbed in the mouth. My sister was born with birth defects and when she was younger my mom had to put medicine under tongue. Also, if a person with heart problems needs a boost aren't the tablets placed under their tongue. I may be off track, maybe I will research it.

It has to be real carbohydrates, though; the scientists used a solution of water and a flavorless starch derivative called maltodextrin. Artificial sweeteners have no effect.
And the scientists think they have figured out why it works."
