StoryCorps: Inspirational stories from around the country
This was mentioned by Kim Komando and I know I've greatly enjoyed hearing some of these featured on NPR over the years.
"Before the advent of movable-type printing, there were few books. These were written and copied by hand, which made them expensive. The everyday person had to pass on information via other methods.
This usually took the form of oral storytelling. Stories were used for entertainment, instruction or moral guidance. A single story could be passed on for generations.
Of course, now we don't need an oral tradition. Books are plentiful, computers have word processors, and Internet blogs are free. However, people still enjoy hearing stories.
That is the basis for Story Corps. This group travels the country, recording people's stories. The aim is preservation and presentation. Over 50,000 recordings have been made since 2003.
These stories are often touching and uplifting. They can also feature interesting bits of history. And you can submit your own stories."
